Why does the focal point not always flash red and beep?

I have the canon 5D3.

I find that with a number of my lenses, at times...when looking through the viewfinder, with AF on...I at times will hear the beep, but the red focal point does not turn red.

Same settings, different shot...it will beep and turn red.

It sometimes happens with focal point in center, or even if I move the focal point around the screen at times...

I cannot find a rhyme or reason why it does not always flash red and beep. Does this mean it is not getting focus properly when it only beeps but the focal point does not flash red?

I'm at single focal point setting.

I've had this happen a lot when shooting some concert venues here, even during day...and I've found at times I'm missing tack sharp focus more than I think I should....

Yes, I'm still learning my camera and likely it is user error, but hoping I can get some info an pointers here.

Thanks in advance,

cayenne

In addition to the not lighting or beeping in AI Servo issue, the camera only lights and beeps when it locks focus. In single shot, it will not open the shutter unless it has locked focus, but it will in AI Servo, even if out of focus, which is why many shooters using high speed machine gun shooting get lots of oof images..

Thanks for the replies guys!!

I'm on single shot.

I'm not on AI servo...

I will hear it beep, but no red flash, but the shutter will trigger....

I've had this happen on the default setting where focus is half down on shutter release, but now also on back button focus where I have it set on the rear AF-ON button in the rear.

It will beep, but the focus point does not always flash red....

I believe there's a setting that controls the illumination of AF points, and one of the options is Auto. With that setting, the camera determines whether or not to illuminate the point, based on ambient light levels.

I forgot that one, I changed it the day I received my camera and never looked back.
