I was asked by a friend why would I even consider going to a 5DIII when the D800 seems better ( he is Pentax 645 shooter).
The answer was I been shoot with a 50D for about 2 years, it has 42000 shutter clicks on it.
Photography is my second job until I retire from the tech world.
I shoot in the studio (portfolios, portraits, fine art nudes), in the field ( urban decay, cityscapes and landscapes) and macros.
I did not upgrade to the 60D, because I did not like the rotating LCD.
I did not upgrade to the 7D, because I did not need to.
I did not upgrade to the 5DII because although I was ready to I knew the 5DIII was just around the corner.
I could not to go the Nikon D800 because I like the weight and size of Canon cameras, I find Nikon cameras too light and the buttons too small.
So I will buy a 5DIII, maybe shoot with it for 3 years and 60000 shutter clicks and who knows maybe in 2016 I will upgrade to 1DX2.
Camera are like cars, you upgrade when you need to and you don't buy monster truck for your 5 min commute to the train station. Well you could, if you really just wanted to make finding your car easy....
My point being, I believe most people will be buying the 5DIII because they used their current camera for a few years and it is time for a new one in their price range. It doesn't have to the best camera just the right one for them.
