Well I only ask because I feel pressured to go out and try one before they are sold out and hard to find if that will ever happen. I have an upcoming trip in early August that I would like to have a good feel for what I am shooting with by then.
Given the initial hickups found in raw processing software (see http://www.the-digital-picture.com/) and some configuration issues discussed here on the forum you may actually want to sit back and wait.
While others are getting worked up on current issues you can also wait for all this to be sorted out. As soon as the software has been fixed and perhaps some configuration issues have been sorted out, you can buy the camera - hopefully even for a somewhat reduced price. At least this is what I am doing.
Some brick and mortal store already have the kit version in stock for pick-up. I think the body only might be hard to find, but even today if you are lucky you can find a body + kit lens in stock.
I think you'll find it, no worries. Unless you have a 24-105, buy the kit, the 24-105 is a wonderful lens, and the $800 premium is well bellow the price of that lens.
Canon has two factories churning them out. If you order it should just be a week or two even if they are temporarily out of stock. They plan to have good supplies to meet initial demands. I wouldn't worry. The D800 orders seem to have outstripped supplies, so they might require a few weeks or even months wait.
