Going to be taking some pics of a local landmarks in my neighborhood and would like to know what the best option would be for a weekend rental.

Photo's will be used in local publications about the neighborhood.

Depends on your definition of "local publication" too. If it's just going to get printed on a raggy newspaper, IQ won't matter so go with the flexibility of a zoom. If it's getting printed double-page in a nice glossy mag then you might be better off with the legendary-IQ of the Distagon (although whether the 16-35 is good enough for a magazine print is debatable, depends on your camera, lighting conditions, tripod, etc, it could still be more than adequate)

I agree with this, but as I've never shot with a Zeiss before, I went with that option. It was also cheaper to rent than the canon.

I want to see if I could live with manual focus, so this rental achieves multiple ends. I'll also be assisting on a video shoot and the Zeiss may come in handy. 6D+Zeiss combo should be fantastic.

While the Zeiss quality is unquestionable, the versatility of the Canon zooms make them indispensable in my opinion.
I'd take a manual lens of high quality for video anytime, but for photo, I'd go Canon zoom straight away.

Also, the new 16-35 2.8L II is improved a lot over the first version. Yay at sharp images!
