Pretty realistic specs for the upcoming G11
The upcoming G11 is pretty obvious, I think the GX1 rumor has been debunked by now.
G11
12.1mp CMOS (No word on size)
DIGIC IV
3″ LCD (920k)
5x Zoom
720 & 1080p Video (30fps)
Minimal ergonomic updates

I might be interested, but I’m still bubvious about how well the tiny cmos photosites work. Canon’s first P&S had less than spectacular performance. Perhaps we will be seeing the new cmos technology as well.
Dear Canon,
Make this with an APS-C sensor and I will buy it instead of a µ4/3 camera.
Hugs and kisses,
Allan
Here’s hoping for a hot pink one. LOL
Those who know, can you put an APS-C sized sensor in a package that size? Won’t the lens size need to increase. What about the distance from the sensor to the lens? Could the same package be maintained?
I am with Allan. I want a small camera with fixed lens, RAW format and hot shoe that can take XSi quality shots. That would be snapped up by LOTS of photogs. You don’t always want to be hauling around a bag of lenses and body. Many cool shoots are missed because we don’t have a G-series sized camera with us everywhere we go.
P.S.
I had a G9 and dumped it. The IQ was bad and the dynamic range was worse. It could take good pictures only under a very limited range of conditions.
Sigma DP2? 24.2mm f/2.8 prime lens on an APS-C sensor.
Yup these are the limitations. I had an EP-1 and while it took near Xti quality pics, it was painfully slow in almost every way. Also the lack of micro 4/3 lenses and the prospect of shelling out thousands on the few good ones by Pany sent me packing it up for a return. I miss it’s slick shape and all. It was a relaly sexy piece of kit, but alas, it was not meant to be. I’m waiting for Canon’s implment. Might be waiting for awhile. Or an EP-2 perhaps.
CR1 ? pass…
Not interested without an swivel screen.
I mean really, a camera like this is an advanced travel cam, ya think you might want to get yourself in the shot sometimes without having to ask strangers?
How has the GX1 rumor been debunked? Much of this sounds similar to what you posted of the GX1 on 11 August.
In my opinion,The swivel screen is a must and optical zoom must be increased by 8x with a bigger sensor size…
+1
Long live the swivel direct print button!!!
I’d like a:
5-8x zoom starting at 24mm.(= 35mm)
A larger sensor.
low noise for long exposure & high iso.
Fast AF.
A 2.8 lens would be sweet.
The only problem will be how small they
can make it.
They can make if they want…Current advanced lens and sensor
technology is enough to make it.
Don’t be pessimistic,David!!!We’ll see a good G11 a couple of days later. Most of us will possibly like it.
Now, this is going to be funny. Unless Canon pulls out an outstanding sensor, the pull back MP will backfire…Panasonic did a good marketing job to explain why they stay with the same MP from the LX2 to the LX3…and in the end the LX3 turned out to be a much better camera than the LX2. If the Canon G11 has lower mp count than the G10 and similar or only slightly better than the G10, people will be very disappointed…
forgot the “performance” in the last line…
I’m interested in a G11. But, it needs to start at 24mm.
I’m just going off what is listed here. The rumor specs here say “Minimal ergonomic updates” and there’s no mention of a swivel screen.
The G series is an advanced travel camera. A swivel screen is a big plus so you can get yourself in the shot now and then. It also makes shooting overhead in a crowd, or down low near the ground a breeze. I’ve been waiting for them to bring the swivel back. It’s a deal killer on an advanced travel cam for muyself.
+1 on the swivel LCD.
Also I’d like to opine that a 5x zoom likely means a small sensor, even if it is CMOS. The existing Canon CMOS point & shoot (forget the model number offhand) does not seem to be as good as CCD of same size in IQ in tests. CMOS: OK, but still small sensor size: yawn.
If they’d add back a swivel LCD I still might be interested, even if the sensor size is same as G10. If not, I’ll pass.
Looks like I’m going to be be underwhelmed by the G11. A small sensor CMOS camera otherwise the same as the G10. yawn.
Hope I’ll be pleasantly surprised though. That’s why we like to follow the rumors!
It looks like it is going to be a disappointment.
The CMOS sensor moves the price tag up by 200$ (see difference between SX1 and SX10) without any improvement of image quality (only advantage is HD video). If it is going to cost 599$, it means that the build quality will be reduced by 100$, which rules out swivel LCD or better lens.
Maybe if they implemented digital aberration correction they should be able to simplify the lens design (less elements) and get more light and wide angle at the same time.
Still it is a mystery why they removed the swivel lcd from the line, it is incredibly useful, they mastered the technology and it would steer some customers from than G1 and LX3…
+1
Also, isn’t XI the Roman numeral version for 11?
I think it’s been debunked in the sense that Canon is not going to release two essentially identical cameras, and since the G11 looks definite, therefore the GX1 isn’t happening.
GPS. If it doesn’t have integrated GPS, I’m not interested.
I don’t know if this means anything, or is a simple mistake by an editor, but in my ‘just delivered’ copy of Popular Photography, one article makes reference to a Canon Powershot G12 as if it is an existing product. This is a ‘September’ issue of the magazine, and Canon is set to release a slew of P&S cameras on August 19. I wonder if this was just an accident of timing.
Now, I can’t see why Canon would change up the naming scheme of the G series (going from G10 to G12), so I’m inclined to believe this was just an error.
Here’s the section of the story for reference (Article is titled ‘One-Lens Wonder’ and is referring to the Sigma DP2):
“But Sigma’s DP2 ($650, street) is different from many of those, such as the Canon Powershot G12, Nikon Coolpix P6000, Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3.”
The only thing they need to improve is noise at > ISO 200.
Get over the swivel screen, it’s not going to happen at 3″, and no one wants a 2″ screen (or an even bigger camera to incorporate a 2.5″ swivel). It’s just an extra thing to break.
A 40x zoom, wow!
+1
I just can’t see a 3″ swivel, maybe a tilt, but no swivel.
yeah that’s why Canon had a whole customer survey focused on the swivel screen a few months back, clearly they couldn’t make one anyone would want…and boy, sure wish you would’ve told me it’s an extra thing to break a few years ago, my kids have been using my old PowerShot G1 with it’s apparently breakable swivel screen all that time, and it’s gotta be pushing 8-9 years old now. Funny how it’s taken more abuse and outlasted any other P&S I’ve ever had…
TBH, I read G11 and GX1 (or GXI) as being one and the same thing, perhaps with the names reflecting different ways of writing ’11’. From that perspective, the GX1 hasn’t been debunked, it’s simply now the G11. Any differences in specs simply reflect the real value of rumors, especially when they don’t come from a solid source.
I was happy with 1.5″ of the A80, but it broke down (the sensor, not the screen) after the A650IS disappeared from the shops and I’m left without a real replacement: SX10 is too big and the image quality is bad, GH1 is big as well and too expensive.
The details above are incorrect.
Camera will be 10MP. not giving other details as that would spoil the fun :)
also… I wouldn’t be expecting any more than 640×480 30fps… and screen is NOT 3″…
Only 640×480? And if the screen is NOT 3″, it MUST be a swiwel screen.
Sorry… swivel screen :D
That because Canon is sticking to outdated 640×480 video on their P&S line like the old outdated APS-H sensor on the 1D and ancient old HDV on their prosumer camcorders even though the competition is blowing them away, you know, because they don’t want to “eat into” their 5D2 sales.
And the more ‘details’ you give the more chance you have of guessing wrong! :)
More MK IV info pls
kthxbye
I honestly can’t see Canon doing anything less than 1080P…. 720P will be a let down.
All it’s compition is 1080P, even lesser cams have it.
I could handle a 640 x 480 @ 120 or faster fps.
I hope you are right. I did not much like the first set of details. We should know in 3 days anyway…
it all come from them why not make it all kickass
Hej, don’t be that sure, last year lower powershots were announced and the G10 later (26th august and 17th sept.).
+1 Don’t care about P&Ss or entry level DLSRs
but you cared enough to read this and type up a reply
CMOS sensor are less expensive to make
…..if a CR1 rumor is all you’ve got , then I’d say at this point everyones’ guessing ! Maybe the G11 has a minor upgrade , and everyone’s going to be very disappointed. Maybe there’s not even an upgrade . The only “real world” evidence is the Best Buy rumor , and that’s pretty thin , imho. I kinda hope it is minor , so the G10s’ price will fall below $400.But otherwise if they decide to give it some new tricks , I’d be content with a G10 w/articulating LCD , and 720p HD , but I’d wait for that $600 price to drop .
12 mp aps-c 30mm f/1.4 is usm lens hd video optoinal interchangeable fast primes basicly a 1.6 crop canon rangefinder system would be sweet
it’s August 17th…at least in my country :D still no CR2 or CR3 for August 19th release?
>CMOS sensor are less expensive to make
…if you produce a lot of them and after the R&D is paid. I’m sure Sony CCDs are still cheaper.
nice article explaining the difference:
http://www.dalsa.com/corp/markets/CCD_vs_CMOS.aspx
I have pdf spec sheet in front of me. if you really wanna know… here goes…
10mp CCD
5x zoom 28-140 (2.8-4.5)
RAW
OIS
2.8″ Rotating LCD
VGA Movie (surprised by this, would have thought HD)
remember this post when the announcement comes around….
oh hell yes!
1920×1080 30p
1280×720 60p
848×480 120p
that would be NICE
+1
Besides, CR Guy can only report what he hears. If there are no Mk IV rumors then what’s he supposed to do, make some up? :)
If there is no HD then its a major major miss for me. Even the pro’s are wanting the 5D for the HD, surely they have to see that in a P&S its even more useful.
I hope ‘someone’ is wrong I really do.
APS-C w/ a 5x zoom? Sounds big – think Rebel + 17-85mm.
it’s a bomb , as in “no show” !
The swivel is a must for me. Let’s hope they include it on the G12 if it is not on the g11. I sold my Nikon 8400 (RAW + swivel and great widf angle) and have regretted it ever since.
According to DSRLMagazine:
http://www.dslrmagazine.com/newsflashes/newsflash/canon-g11-o-gx1.html
the G11 will probably have a swivel LCD…
10mp CCD from 40D will be NICE!!!
I’d rather have 24mm than the swivel screen… but if they give me BOTH, I’m there.
Suprising that there are no new rumors, leaked images etc, since it’s getting close to the date.
Indeed, there should be more news by now.
They still have it. It is called 5D MKII with 24-105 IS!!!
D.
Told ya so :P
