“the crew working on the next Harry Potter movie has 2 Canon EOS 5D Mark II cameras on set for filming. And, they’re using Panavision lenses on the 5D2s.”

That’s Iron Man 2 and Harry Potter apparently using the 5D Mark II’s. It’s safe to assume updated firmware is being used.
thanks mitch

Spoiler alert – in the movie Harry uses a 5D Mark II to defeat the evil lord Nikon.
oh my god, just don’t say his name!
LMFAO + AWESOME
Panavision has 5D MK II cameras with Panavision to Canon lens mount adaptors available for rental.
The film crews use them for previsualisation with the actual lens that they will shoot with on the Panaflex film camera.
Panavision has done this with previous Canon cameras going back for more than 10 years as part of the Panavision Kodak PreVIEW system.
…which means they probably don’t care less about manual exposure control.
Makes perfect sense. Who wants to use the crummy 5D2 for filming a multi-million dollar movie when there’s much better equipment available?
They might not care too much, but maybe in the past they used canon bodys to shoot stills with manual control of aperture, exposure and iso to getan idea of what the shot looks like. With a firmware updated 5D2 they might be able to shoot movie clips and get an good idea what the shot might look like.
Why mount a 20,000+ dollar lens on a 2k dollar body?
No Way, harry potter and a 5d2. Let circle jerk to this!
lets keep the dream of new firmware up until the next 5D (whatever) is coming. “safe to assume” – hahaha !
one word : Direct Print button.
you can quote me on this, but I want to stay anonymous.
c’mon – any hacker knows that Lord Nikon is on the good guys’ side!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hackers_(film)
Because you want the options ;)
They could also take a 20K body and mount a 2K lens (are those even available for film cams?) but i think this gives better quality. Check your local birdspotter for more options (350D with a 6K Sigmonster or 500f4 anyone?)
This is great if true, the visual effects workflow can be much improved through this camera as you can shoot HDR light probes and pre-vis footage with the same lens as the final shoot, this will really save time on callibration and effects integration.
Not to mention the 5DII is small enough to get those shots that couldn’t be done on an monster film rig, and they are cheap enough to have quite a few on set to do get lots more options for shots at the pre-vis stage.
Darn it! How could I have forgotten the venerable and indispensable direct print button!
It would be very nice if the Canon 5D2 FW Update allowed full manual control. To the point of allowing you to drop the shutter speed to say 2 seconds. Finally, I’ll be able to record cars driving by and having the lights blur into lines of color :)…wishful thinking? What do you guys think?
And of course being able to control ISO and F-stop will be critical. But I’m assuming the update will allow for atleast that much. Very annoying when the camera decides to use 1/700 and ISO 1200. Sigh*
New Profoto Lighting Set coming this week Yay! :)
How would you do a shutter speed of 2 seconds when you have a frame rate sixty times faster?
who cares!
SSSS Why lease a $250,000 digital movie camera if you can buy a 5D MK II for less than a one day rental fee.
You are always better off putting your money into a lens.
to previz the shot you want the exact lens you will be using to shoot the movie.
Awesome, I thought I was the only one thinking that.
Hack the planet!
– There is also another “rumor†that tells a firmware update is being tested in another production. Can not tell wich one.
– We still keep showing our STRONG interest and request to Canon for FULL MANUAL CONTROL for EOS 5D Mark II, and also 1080p24 if possible.
– Please Check: 5dmark2.wordpress.com
Started in march, with little spreading, more than 2.000 people, even Professionals working at production studios from ALL AROUND THE WORLD have signed a Petition to Canon Inc., and also placed LOT of requests by each one’s personal ways, inquiries, online reviews, and phone calls to Canon.
– We all hope Canon announces SOON a firmware update giving “FULL†manual control.
Only Aperture manual control would be more than disappointing, and will even drop the loyalty of too many already frustrated customers who had to purchase Nikon lenses to get at least Aperture control…
THANKS TO EVERYONE supporting every possible action in this direction.
me
Agreed, its not like the movie is good enough for the difference to count
lol, ah good to know you’re back, evil twin.
congrats on your profoto pack. I’ve been lusting after an 8a system, not that that will happen…ever
Agree, I don’t mind the rumors, after all it’s a rumor site, but why add editorial comments like “safe to assume”. He should add CR-rating to his own comments, unfortunately it would be a lot of CR1s.
i currently also using panavision lenses on my canon 5d on a movie im dping out in michigan. ive got some sick super super speeds that open to a 1. otherwise most of the film will be shot on panavised f900s but ill be posting what i think about the 5d as i continue to shoot with it. my blog
sorry link didnt work :/ here is the sight http://williameubank.com/news/
why would you set up a shot you couldn’t do on a full-size film rig?
freedom.
For years technics were used to light the inside of a car with conventional, heavy, big lighting equipement. Not pratical but it could be make at the sacrifice of other things like camera placement, on location shooting, etc.
But then, Litepanels came up and it has become easy to setup light in narrow places. So it gives the director more freedom to work with.
The 5DII is an improvement too made in the direction. Is it perfect? No. Is it shooting 4k? No. But sometimes it might just be what you need for a special 10 second shoot.
It is another tool they can use and they will use whatever they think is best for each individual shoots.
and me, and I reckon quite a few other people who like the idea of a decent and cheap alternative to film that doesn’t involve spinning frosted glass and is made by a company with a great range of lenses.
Good stuff Will, I’ve bookmarked your site and be good to know how it works out. I can’t wait to have a proper test with some new glass.
Well its wishful thinking but I have seen film cameras that can do that. And thanks for the profoto wishes Zac. I’m excited.
Kinko’s Fedex some how managed to screw up the shipping and its taking 2 weeks instead of 3 days. Haha, I think the wait is making it even more rewarding.
Anyway, like I said, above comments just contain my hopes and wishes. :)
Yea Sam is right. Film is very expensive and if the 5D2 can mimick or recreate the same look and feel…well that’ll really help a lot of indie film people.
Telecine = $10,000 per one hour of footage
Super 16 = $3500 used
Lenses…my friend got an ultra wide film lens and it was $15k. Supposedly that was a “bargain”.
Right now I don’t think the 5D2’s 1080p has the image quality of Super 16 but for the cost I definitely am NOT complaining haha.
Why don’t you just slob my knob? We don’t care about your petition.
Hastur Hastur Hastur!
if they truly use it for filming and not stil shots, it is for sure using a different firmware which allows full manual controll!!!!!
IF it is not a fake
I work in the industry and I can assure you that they are not shooting their motion picture on the 5D. This is simply not done on major motion pictures. They may be using it for testing or previewing but that would be all.
I keep hearing about this stuff. Really interesting. I have looked online and found some other blogs that offer some information, but not as much as on this site. Your blog is definitely going in my subscription program!
Interesting comments. My children are really into Harry Potter after reading the books. They are 7 and 8. They want to go dressed up in harry potter costumes .
