NAB 2010 kicks off tomorrow – and you should expect some pretty fantastic announcements from a wide variety of companies. I know of quite a few – but am sworn to secrecy for at least another 12 hours or so.

For those of you who could not make it out to the city of sin for this conference – know that a lot of the buzz here surrounds the HD DSLR and “convergence” worlds. Very exciting times. I can’t wait to share a lot of what I know with you very shortly. Zeiss, RedRock Micro, Lite Panels, Marshall Electronics, Canon and many many more have some very exciting announcement to make tomorrow!

  • Well the Mac version is now 32 bit.
For many of us the fact that CS4 was 16bit was the reason we didn’t upgrade.

  • CS5 Master Collection comes *without* Photoshop? Am I wrong, or was Photoshop included with CS4 Master Collection?

  • hope the stupid remotes are not the only thing that comes from canon

guess what some high end lenses that can resolve the hdslrs chips would be nice

  • Might there be Zeiss “Compact Prime 2″ Cine Lenses in EF mount?

It was expected a few months ago, so that might be exciting for some.

  • I meant to say “64bit” and “32bit”.

I posted that before my Monday morning cup of coffee :)

  • If it is a remote with an external display … that is not so stupid, just for photographers. If it has’nt the “for-professionals-pricetag”!

  • Maybe a lens with special movie support, like the stepless aperture Panasonic has in one of the µ4/3s lenses?
Or even better: Maybe Canon finally introduces an extension to the EF mount AF protocol that improves contrast AF speed (of course only for new lenses)? Faster contrast AF would not only make AF usable for video, but could also be a selling point for DSLR newbies that would otherwise pick a Sony for their fast contrast AF. At the same time, they could sell a lot of mark II lenses with support for the new AF protocol, and make a small fortune in “rechipping” existing lenses to also support it.

  • “…that would otherwise pick a Sony for their fast contrast AF”

I didn’t think that Sony’s contrast-detect AF was any quicker than Canon’s. If it was, what would be the point of fitting some of their DSLRs with videocameras in their viewfinders to enable phase-detect AF?

  • You are right… I should have written “live view AF”.
Anyway: As far as I understand thinks, the reason that Canon’s contrast AF is so much slower than Panasonics is not so much about sensor readout and contrast calculation processing speed, but more about the suitability of the AF protocol for contrast AF, were you have to “move the focal plane around” to find the point of optimal focus. For phase detection, however, at least as far as I understand it is working, the lens is sent absolute focus values.

  • About Photoshop CS5, i’ve seen some videos and I really want to try the new Content-Aware Fill, the 64bit version and also if the auto lenses correction in ACR is good as the DPP function.
I know we would need some time because only a bunch of lenses are included , but presets are sharable.
Generally speaking it seems a great upgrade to me, since even when there are no new functions, the “old” ones get really better each time.

No idea about the video-related news, if rumors are correct, the 1DsIV has been tested since vancouver winter olympics and should be avaible for this soccer world cup.
    60D is also m.i.a. but :
    – i’ve seen too many speculations about it during these years
    – it would come a bit too close to the 550D

We’ll see if it will be a surprise, or something similar to some simply samples of the new 4:2:2 codec :-)

  • I just looked at Laforet’s blog… can someone enlighten me on what the h*** is that fancy thing shown in the picture beside the post quoted by CR guy?

  • It is an iphone running an application to remotely control the settings of a canon DSLR during a video shoot.

Looks like it has a wheel on the right side to control lens focus.

  • No direct print button gags, please!

An 85mm f1.1 would be incredible…but I need my car and probably couldn’t afford both!

Must admit, after the 5D2 FW update, I’m really happy with the HD video as it is. Any possibility of a RAW data out module would be cool, especially any ability to sidestep that pesky 4GB FAT32 file size limit, which kills me when i’m shooting a boring conference dude who just waffles on past the 12 minute mark before even catching breath!

  • If Canon can crack the contrast-detect AF problems of the EF mount lenses and match Panasonics micro-4/3rds AF like you suggest, it would also pave the way for a mirrorless EF mount camera.

  • I’ve really been hoping for a device that allows electronically controlled focus pulls rather than that ridiculously anachronistic arrangement of gears like the rest of them (we have USM’s now, people). Maybe this one is it, and maybe they’ll make a version of it for those of us who didn’t buy an iphone!

  • Agreed, a “hands-off” focus pull would be nice – but it will probably be a little slow…

ipod touches are cheap compared to most photo gear…

  • Yeah, you need resolving power for the mighty 2 megapixels resolution of 1080p HD…

  • Cinema5D.com has a video of the new Red Rock Micro Remote. They also have a Sonar Range Finder that can pull focus when hooked the Remote.

  • I first used a wireless focus system in the early 1970s. This is not new technology. At least not in Hollywood.

  • Apparently the new Leicas have flare problems, but Leica is trying to redesign them to fix the issue.

  • That Red Rock remote thing will be using an external motor for focus, not the Canon internal focus motor.

The same motor that is used with their “Micro Remote” wireless follow focus.

  • Hahahaha. …..Car’s are a highly over rated luxury anyway…LOL

I’ll take the lens to replace my 85mm f1.2 any day!!!!…So long as it can focus a lot quicker. Speaking of which. Does anyone know if the 85mm f1.2 II is much faster in focusing then it’s older version? The original version I have takes beautiful shots but OMG it’s slow!

  • That’s a good thing! This will make it useable on Nikon lenses, Leica R lenses, Ziess lenses, not just Canon lenses.

  • Well, to truly benefit from a mirrorless design, they would have to reduce the flange focal distance like Pansonic/Olympus did when they removed the mirror from 4/3s to get µ4/3s. But just as with µ4/3s that would still allow the existing EF(-S) lenses to be compatible via an adapter, but would still mean a new system.
Sooner or later such a system will be introduced by Canon, it just depends on how long Canon will try to sell classic (but comparably small body) DSLRs to the enthusiast consumers that want better image quality, but that would rather not have the bulk of a DSLR. For these folks, µ4/3s is extremely attractive, and sooner or later the manufactures of the classic systems will begin to feel the hit in market share in particular in the entry level market segment.

    Lets hope that:
    a) the new mirrorless Canon system is fully compatible (via an adapter without optics, not like the adapters they offered to convert FD lenses to the EF mount) with the existing EF system. I guess they will be smart enough to do that.
    b) They improve the AF protocol for contrast AF not only for the new mirrorless mount, but also for the existing EF(-S) mount. That should make the movie crowd happy. If they offered rechipping of existing lenses to support this new protocol that would also be strong signal to any EF followers that Canon is taking care of their investment.
    c) They make the sensor size for their mirrorless system APS-C

  • While Idiots around the world spend stupidly their time twittering and blogging about convergence (and only few get tons of bucks to teach this stupid word to others like Laforet does) Olympus and Panasonic does what Canon should have done a long time ago: A freaking Camcorder that works like a full freaking camcorder :P…

One more mark to: Canon you are frigging wasting time·$%*!

  • Problem 1:
Olympus and Panasonic have no Fullframe or APS-C cameras – the DOF is not shallow enougth with these lenses (still and movie).

    Problem 2:
The Canon 20D was – for my needs – the first DSLR with film like quality. So I invested in Canon lenses.

    Problem 3:
Getting the real “movie feeling” I need at minimum an APS-C sensor but don’t have the money for a professional movie cam.

Convergence of still/movie is – in my opinion – a good chance to give tools to those who are not swimming in money.
And I would prefer a WELL DESIGNED still-movie-camera (DSLR or EVIL) with outstanding image quality for stills and good video quality.
One system for both purposes keeps the weight of the necessary equipment down!

But you are right: Don’t make a hype about that!

  • Why on earth does anyone want or need an 85mm f1.1? Bigger, more expensive without being that much faster. The Mark II is superb and doesn’t need updating for a while, a quite brilliant portrait lens.

  • God please let there be a 60D =)

    That would be so awesome!
Though I am afraid it’s to early and it’s going to be that 1D if at all :/

  • It shud be coming soon… I thought that Feb was a good time to announce it; along with the T2i… Well, maybe they added super-video to it or something.

  • Yea I just wanted to post the same.. So much for “exciting announcements”…

And I really thought we would see a new camera. Silly me.

  • sigh same here.
rumors seem hard to come by recently. maybe we should take a more active approach with canon rumors site soliciting donations to buy informants haha
