Replacement of the SX1 IS
Received an email saying Canon would be replacing the SX1 IS with a completely different camera. The camera would be modeled around the G11 and use a CMOS based sensor. The “GX1” would also shoot 1080p video with various frame rates. All other features would be on par with the G11.
No word on whether noise would take a step back or not.
The camera would be a niche market product and carry the appropriate price tag (a big one).
Announcement near the end of January or early February.

Hej,
Would be better to use the SX1 body with a smaller zoom than x20 and a bigger sensor than 1/1.7′.
Now unless the CMOS sensor has really improved (over the one in the SX1), this would be very bad news.
APSC sensor, f2 / f2.8 lens, limted zoom, 7D high ISO performance… Now that would be nice :)
No information about 60D in last couple of weeks/months… seems like “60D project” is dead. Well… i am going to buy 50D next week :-(
Given the 7D, what would be the point of a 60D?
hej bobo,
i’m looking to sell my 50d so i can upgrade to 7d, interested?
Seriously, wait, save some more $$$ and buy a 7D.
No thanks, i want a new body with full guarantee. Older lenses – no problem for me, but body a want new. Anyway thanks.
I think it’s a bit reckless to assume that we will not see another xxD because we haven’t seen any rumors lately!
Personally, I would like an xxD with a 15 MP chip (12 would be fine) incorporating some of the sensor technologies seen on the 7D, and still using the CF card format. Canon mentioned that these technologies would be filtering through the EOS line-up. Hopefully that includes a future xxD.
The point would be the huge price difference for starters. Not everyone needs or would want to pay more for the extras the 7D gives you. Beyond the larger viewfinder, there’s isn’t too much the 7D offers me for shooting landscapes to justify a purchase. The 5D would be great, but it’s much more than I’m willing to pay for a camera right now.
So the only logical upgrade from my 450D would be the 50D, which I’m not willing to buy as I’m disappointed in it’s high ISO performance. Especially compared to the newer T1i. So now I’m waiting on the 60D. I do hope they stick to the 15MP sensor though.
I agree 100%. 15 or 12 MP would be ideal for me personally.
If they boost it to 18MP I’ll be disappointed and may not buy it, as it won’t be ideal for shooting landscapes.
100% agree with that. 18MP will be disappointing for me too. MP decreasing + better ISO noise reduction will be fine.
Could this be the same camera that was being referred to in the rumour a while back about a replacement for the Canon PowerShot Pro1, I wonder? Put the electronics of the G11 into an SX1 body/lens setup and slap a red ring on the barrel… I’d certainly be interested in that!
What exactly is a point of “CR1” rumor? “New source, never heard from them before” so basically any fanboi or dreamer can have his wet dreams posted, great, makes huge sense. Lift your game CanonRumours, those sort of “rumors” really hurt what is left of the credibility of this site.
It makes for conversation. The rating is so you can take it with a grain of salt. It’s CanonRumors, not CanonFacts.
This could be the much awaited answer to the panny GH1. I still don’t think Canon will create another mount and their answer to m4/3 will be something like the sx series.
GX1 is an old recycled rumor first appeared before the G10 (or was it G9, am not sure). I believe it’s false this time round as well.
It is very hard for all manufacturers (except for Fuji & Panasonic maybe) to make (at house) better tiny sensors than what they can buy from Sony in terms of (costs & performance). It was probably a bad move from Canon to try make their own compact sensors, they can try hard as Panasonic did for years when their compacts were known to be excellent except for horrible noise compared to the competition (as was the case with FZ30/50, lately with cameras like LX3 the problem is finally under control).
Honestly, I really hope that Canon can lower G10’s CCD voltage and increase its frequency to 16mhz
