I hope there’ll be a rebate promotion for Germany as well! Or that the prices get down again…
So I’ve never done an instant rebate with Canon, is it something you print off the web site? Or is it in the retailer’s store? Or what?
Instant rebates are instant, they are in effect when you purchase the item.
Yes, I hope that too =)
Generally prices reflect the instant rebate when listed.
Also talk about craptastic body rebates. In June I would expect a rebate for the T1i to be added (as has been done in the past with newly introduced hardware).
No rebate for the EF 70–200mm f/2.8L USM???
What about EOS 50D Body only?
Hmmm… should I get the EF-S 60mm or the EF-S 10-22mm? Any thoughts?
I’m travelling to the US in early May and then mid June. Could anyone please explain to me how these rebates work? I buy a lens or two and then … what?
At authorized canon dealers, the value of the rebate is automatically deducted from the normal price. It’s like a sale.
I would think that the non IS has been discontinued… its still on the website, but probably inventory is low so they dont really care
get the 10-22 if you want wide lens, get the 60 if you want macro… :D
hehehe, they are compleeeetely different
Yeah, I’m aware of that. I will probably end up with both eventually but I can’t decide which one I want more. I think I would use the 10-22 more while traveling, but I might use the 60 more in my “everyday” shooting. That is, I think good subjects for macro are easier to come by than good subjects for wide angle work.
Thank you! Does this mean these products are being phased out by Canon?
Is there any signs of rebates in the UK??
I have just sold my 400D Kit and am desperately looking to purchase a new kit!
Possibly 40D or 50D!
What makes you think this? where did you hear this? I mean i’d love it if there was any truth to it…
This could have just swayed me from buying a Nikon
No 35L on there!
Also, these rebates will bring the prices back down to what they were before the hike…or just a few dollars higher :)
Personally, even if it isn’t discontinued I would stay away from it. It’s almost completely useless if you have anything less than super bright sun light. I would go for the 70-200 4L IS in it’s place. Just a thought, it’s the same price and it’s much better.
arn’t these rebates kind of hypocritical, really, jack up the prices then tell us they are on sale (instant Rebate)
if you didnt want to pay the price a month ago, why pay it now ??? Human nature! (What a great deal!)
The lens I wanted, increased in price by $99.
That $100 rebate looks just silly, now :-(
Rebates by Canon have sucked lately!
Wow, this is great. No 35L rebate… even after the lens price increased by about $200 dollars…
They did this at the end of 2008/beginning of 2009.
me too!
You sold your old cam BEFORE you got a new one? What kind of sense does this make?
Does sameone know if ther will be a rebate promotion in Spain? And if so, when? I’m very interested.
Yeah,
sold the kit to get the funds for a 40D, went to purchase, then noticed details of upcoming rebates so held off!!
J
And why no Canon 5D Mark II? That would be great
because its a new camera that they cannot meet demand for already. Why rebate something they arnt having a hard time selling? All that a rebate would do would be to lower their profit and not sell anymore cameras.
Do I wait for the 60D or buy a used 5D??
Go with the used 5D. One of the best ever, even with all of the new advancements…
I would like to know if this will come to Europe. I do not think in the Uk the rebates will be the same. Always too expensive. Sometimes is cheaper if you fly to Us and return.
I want to buy the 580ex ii flash, here it cost £430 pounds ( I think is like 600 US)…
so no double rebates anymore??? I saved so much last time with double instant rebates!
I KNOW LIEK 4 REELZ, I wonder how photographers managed for the past 50 years! People are so spoiled it isn’t even funny. For your information, the 70-200 2.8 NON-IS puts up better image quality than the IS version.
Check around. Not all dealers raised their prices so they could keep your rebate.
lulz. THe non Is version is not “only useful in super bright sunlight………”
MOAR DIRECT PRINT BUTTONS!!!!!!!
I ok e my 10-22,,, can set up some interest g shots,,, but like you said, ESP on vacation,,,
i have no idea whats the point of direct print…. i have never used it and i have had quite a few canon cameras
yesterday I just did this one using a 70-200 2.8 non IS
@ISO 3200, so I don’t need an IS to do fine photography
IS is a kind of technique which hasn’t been around and yes…I don’t need it at all.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/guatitamasluz/3487174686/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/guatitamasluz/3487174686/
made without IS
@ISO 3200 using a 70-200mm 2.8 L
I hope you were typing this on a blackberry… but even then… my god. Learn to type QWERTY kthx
No one who owns a 40D, 50D, 5D, 5DMKII EVER uses the print buttons. I’m sure someone who owns an XTI has used the button once maybe.
People who take and sell photos at events use it to create a inexpensive photobooth. They can churn them out for $5.00 with no editing or cropping. I’ve seen this done at our local renniasance fair, for example. Just need a camera and printer, and you are a professional photographer :-)
Hey, try ebay and shop around you can get it up to £75-100 cheaper.
its $420 in the US. you’re getting ripped off
I might have to give that a whirl.
Just setup at a scenic location and have at it!
Wow, thanks Canon!
Now where’s that Direct Advertisement Button???
Once again, Europeans do not have a similar offer… Who can explain to Canon that we are fed up to be seen as a cash machine….
Yeah all those people boycotting the 5D2 until the firmware update adds manual controls and cooks dinner has not driven the price down on that camera at all.
;(
can i buy lens on B&H online and get the instant rebate?? anyone knows? there is no news on B&H website yet?
Not necessarily. For the most part I think these are products that aren’t selling as well as they would like. Some of them, like the 70-300 shipping with the XS, do seem like products that they’re trying to clear out.
Yes, you can buy it online and get the instant rebate. You don’t need to do anything.
Probably they will start showing off on Sunday!
Actually, iPhone at 50 on the freeway,,,
Didn’t proofread,,,
And no, I don’t normally , but my wife was calling, and I wanted to send before I answered,,,,
This is certain? Got my eye on Canon 50D with 18-200 lens. Upgrading from Nikon D80.
Myself, I’m getting sick of waiting. I am restarting from scratch, so could go Nikon or Canon. I wanted to go Canon, but this is driving me back to Nikon. Are the abstract advantages of the video capability worth the gouging? Probably not anymore with no rebate.
im also considering the 580exII and im currently in the uk. however, i heard that when it is shipped over, some import duties (5% i think) and VAT (17.5%) will be charged on top of the flash and its delivery charges (~50USD). Based on rough calculations, the final price will be around 350GBP, which is about the same price in UK… bummer
Newegg already has the rebates active as of friday night!
if newegg has instant rebate themselves, can i get Canon’s manufacturer’s rebate starting Sunday 5/1?
i mean in addition to newegg’s own instant rebate, can i also get additional Canon’s manufacturer’s rebate if i purchase it when the rebate period starts on 5/1?
i mean Canon’s rebate’s eligibility should just require purchase from authorized dealership and during the rebate period, right??
I am not sure how you claim the 5d2 is gouging…. It puts out the same IQ as canon’s $8,000 camera….. for 3,000.
Please tell me you’re driving on roads far far away from me.
The 70-200’s would seem to be one of their more-popular models though.
And the Nikon D700 does the same IQ for $2300-and-change. The stores say they have 5dmk2’s sitting on the shelf now, they are no longer being snapped up. To me, the Canon and Nikon FF systems seem to to be pretty close overall. Canon wants to keep squeezing top dollar until what, the inventory backs up to Japan? Fine, I’m going to re-examine the D700 Nikon. In this market, it would be madness to pay full retail/top dollar. Not including the 5dmk2 in a small rebate pushes me to reconsider.
They ARE the canon rebates at newegg. Don’t know why they got to do it early but they did.
Now it’s already May 3rd and I see nothing from Amazon :(
no rebates so far on amazon…US east coast is already into May 3rd. Since amazon head quarter is located in Seattle probably it will be infect I guess from 3:00 am on east coast.
Also far nothing on the Canon’s website
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PromotionsAct
I don’t understand the “body” part of the rebate described above. It looks like you only get the rebate if you get the kit. I didn’t want to get the kit, since all reviews say the lens that comes in the kit is pretty bad. Will the rebate not apply if I only get the XSi body?
I don’t know where you got this information, but as far as I read, this kit lens is not bad considering its price. You can’t compare it with an L lens. Or maybe what you read was about 18-55mm II, the predecessor of this one?
Ok B&H showing instant rebates..
this is rebate from neweigg only…not officially from canon. what a scam
Why would stores want to give rebates and doc on their profits?
Anyone seeing anything for the Rebel XSi yet??
Where? I see nothing on Newegg
Your both idiots.
What scam???? Loon.
Kit. And the lens for the kit is really not that bad for $100.
Suggestion: learn the difference between “you’re” and “your” before calling someone else an idiot. Hint: maybe repeat the fourth grade.
So it’s May 3rd and I’m not seeing price changes on Amazon.com or Adorama. The price actually increased a tiny bit from yesterday on Amazon, by a few cents.
Just checked Amazon.com again and noticed that for the 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS the rebate does appear to be in effect even though there was no decrease in price from yesterday. On the product page it mentions:
“Save $200 Instantly
Purchase this product from Amazon.com and save $200 instantly. Price shown includes manufacturer’s instant rebate. Plus, save instantly on other qualifying Canon lenses, Speedlites and more. Offer valid through July 11, 2009. ”
However, compared to yesterday, the price actually went up very slightly. I know this for certain because I had it in my shopping cart and when I checked my cart this morning hoping that the price went down it showed a notification at the top saying the price had gone up slightly.
These rebates seem to be meaningless, at least for the 70-200mm L lens. Argh!
I used the power of Google to research the lens and asked friends of mine who are heavily into Canon equipment. They said to get the body only and pick up a 50mm f1.8 instead. That’s what I’d like to do anyway, since I want to take portrait photos of my daughter and I have read that’s the perfect lens for it.
Link? Amazon doesn’t show that for me, just a $200 lower price if bought through Adorama instead of Amazon themselves.
B&H is usually the first to show the rebates, I checked this morning and they are there.
But I didn’t see the rebate for “EOS Rebel XSi EF-S 18–55mm IS Kit (B) + EF-S 55–250mm f/4–5.6 IS – $200” on B&H.
I am waiting for the exact same deal:
“EOS Rebel XSi EF-S 18–55mm IS Kit (B) + EF-S 55–250mm f/4–5.6 IS – $200″
Anyone has idea? My budget range is from $500-$800, with a hope getting XSi with lens, or even increase to my max $1000 to get 40D/50D. Should I wait? Or is this rebate done? I don’t see anywhere having this instant rebate except b and h.
Amazon has the XSi kit lens + 55-250 IS lens for about $750 + tax (if applicable). You have to buy both the camera and the lens from Amazon (not from other online retailers listed on Amazon) and the $200.00 rebate shows up just before the confirmation page after you enter the credit card info.
Thanks for the info. Do you recommend me getting this? Since it’s relatively good, but should I increase my budget to get 40D and 50D if they are just within the ranges?
Yeah I didn’t see this either and was looking for it :(
Is that 55-250 IS lens any good?
I couldn’t find this. Do you have a direct link?
check this link : http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PromotionsAct&fcategoryid=101&WT.mc_id=C125512
Sorry. There is no direct link. You have to put both the camera with the 18-55 kit lens and a 55-250IS lens to the cart and enter credit card info to see the rebate. Make sure you are selecting Amazon.com as the seller. Here’s an order summary..

Amazon appears to have offered the rebate but forgot to adjust the price. Nothing’s changed. Though Adorama on Amazon has made the adjustment accordingly.
I was looking at the Macro 100 for a couple months. It went up in price by $60 about a week ago. They’re now offering a $35 rebate. What a joke! I feel violated.
Ditto. I would hate to think that my thread was the catalyst in some gory accident.
Good point… it’s not a bad discount on those either.
In my opinion the XXD series is a different animal from the rebels. The sensors in both are pretty similar in capability, though the XXDs offer higher ISOs. So if you were to take the exact same photo with a rebel and an XXD you shouldn’t notice much of a difference. Nonetheless the XXD will give you more professional features (frame rate, viewfinder, construction, etc), though in a larger, heavier package (the difference is pretty significant). On the other hand, the XSi gives you most of the tech features of the 40D in a smaller lighter package. Professional features + greater cost vs. toned down specs and increased portability.
The XXD series is too large/heavy for my uses, so I see myself sticking with the rebel line in the future. Furthermore, most would agree that if you’re on a budget you’re better off spending the money on lenses vs. camera body. But if you plan to have the camera for a while better make sure it’s one you like!
The terms of the instant rebates have changed for dealers. You must advertise at least one product that has a rebate during that period. Even if you have to pay for the ad out of pocket just to claim the “instant rebate” back from the lame fulfillment company Canon employs to deny claims!!
I think it gets good reviews, though it is by no means pro quality. It’s perhaps a better value than the 70-300 IS, though at that point you might want to consider one of the 70-200 L telephotos.
Just ordered a 50D and a EF S 18 – 200 Lens from Amazon. Ordered as separate items and not as a kit. When I got to checkout the $300 rebate was applied. The total was 1395.85 AS a Kit the price was higher, and out of stock from Amazon. As A Amazon Prime Cust. I have no shipping cost added to the order.
If they’ve discontinued it (which I doubt, this version is RARELY in a rebate… the 50mm/1.4 isn’t in it either), then am I ever glad I have mine. It’s a RAZOR. The non-IS is sharper and has better IQ, not my opinion, have a go at the MTF charts. Less elements = sharper image. It’s a pound less weight and $500 cheaper (think I’ll pick up a macro with my savings). QUESTION: what does IS do for you when your subject is moving (i.e., hockey game)? Nothing. So if you shoot museums all day the extra $500 will help. For landscapes with long shutter speeds, ANY lens needs a tripod. IS isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. If I need 3 extra stops, I’ll crank my 5D2 up to 1600 or 3200 ISO. Done.
I’ve been looking at the Canon 70-200mm USM L IS for months and the best price was always between $1649 and $1699. Now there is a $200 “instant rebate” from Canon on this lens and the best price I can find now is $1599. On Sunday, 5/3/09, when the rebates went live, I found the lens at several online stores including Adorama, B&H Photo and even Amazon for $1499. Today (Wednesday 5/6) the price is $1599. So the $200 “instant rebate” on this lens is really $100 because all the store raised their prices by $100. Bummer I waited three days, but why would I expect that the stores would raise their prices and not pass on the full $200 rebate???
An interesting point of view:
http://www.lensrentals.com/news/2009.04.24/state-of-the-slr-industry-2009
I found it here:
http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/769572
@yngmn
I emailed B&H (see below) to ask why the price was not $200 off of the “regular” price.
They responded:
“Canon only honors the instant rebate if when the kit is sold at list price. They do not honor the reabte when you buy below list such as buying them separately.”
—
This was my email, to which B&H responded:
“Why is the price on this kit (CAEDRXSIKSK) $1049?
The components separately (CAEDRXSIKB and CA552504IS) are only $699+$255=$954.
Yes, I understand there is a rebate. But the rebate is $200. Therefore the final kit price should be $954-$200=$754. (Not $1049-$200=$849.)
Why is the kit price $95 more than buying the parts separately?”
