Didn't know it, but it exists
Thanks to the folks at Ardfry Imaging, I was able to test out their .CR2 thumbnailer for Windows Vista 64bit. Like a lot of people, I was waiting for Canon to come up with the software. That doesn't appear to be coming anytime soon!

There's isn't much to say other than how easy it was to install and set up. The software works like a charm.
The coolest thing is it thumbnails my .CR2 files faster than Windows thumbnails jpgs. I can't complain about that.
The software is available for .CR2, .DNG and .NEF for the 64 bit environment as well.

This could be very good. I absolutely HATE how slow Vista is to render thumbnails.
CR2 thumbnailing is faster obviously because it can extract a low-resolution JPG from the CR2 to process.

canon already has something like this, im using it myself with vista 32bit, dunno about 64bit.

well reading the comments, it appears you can use it with 64bit, just gotta load up the 32bit version of photo gallery that is included with vista 64bit

I’ve given it a go and, if Canon codecs don’t work then it might be worth a try. Otherwise, I’d say it’s worth testing before you buy. It made windows explorer hang for several seconds at a time on my PC. Perhaps a future version will fix this?
Just use Fastone’s image viewer for goodness sake and forget about codecs etc! Anyone who uses Windows “built-in” stuff can’t see the forest for the trees…
is there really a market for this, indeed Canon provides the WIC .CR2 codec for windows Vista, but it’s true I have experienced problems viewing CR2 thumb under XP, I m the only one to have this problem ?

If you guys had a Mac, you would never need to face such a promblem. No additional software is required here. ;-)
Yes, there is a market for this, and it is quite healthy.
People often forget that for many people photography is a profession as well as a business. For someone who makes a living from photography, the codec will pay for itself almost immediately since your workflow is simplified.
yes, and with a mac you don’t have photoshop 64 bits ;-)

Great post! I?m just starting out in community management/marketing media and trying to learn how to do it well – resources like this article are incredibly helpful. As our company is based in the US, it?s all a bit new to us. The example above is something that I worry about as well, how to show your own genuine enthusiasm and share the fact that your product is useful in that case
