Firmware Coming?
Firmware Coming?

I've been told we may not be getting a firmware update this month like reported a little while ago. It is claimed Canon is working on one, it's just not coming in the immediate future.

It's still guesswork as to whether or not the movie mode will get some manual love. I'm getting conflicting stories.

I'm waiting to hear from someone in particular that will give me a better idea.

  • That would really suck.

I’ve started using the video mode more and more. The potential is insane. But not having control over its power sucks.

  • After reading the Chuck Westfall interview, I really got the opinion that there would be no additional controls for this model, or not soon. I think he is saying that they looked at it and found that it was a big project and not coming soon, if ever.

We pretty rapidly went from “Wow, freaky, video!” to “How come it can’t do all the things I want it to do?” For example, setting the aperture or locking it at a certain ISO–why are those features not there?

Westfall: In the beginning, we had to take into account that there are going to be a fair amount of users out there who are into the customization aspect, but the overall customer profile on this camera (the 5D Mark II) includes a lot of amateurs as well. Anything we can do to give those customers automation on the basics of video, including exposure, shutter speed, aperture, and ISO–those are things that will make it easier to produce high-quality footage without that much experience.

To be honest with you, one of the other issues is that adding the full range of manual controls on this camera makes it a much more complicated instrument. It’s not necessarily that we’re never going to do it, but it’s a generation 1.0. We’d like to get some market feedback, which we’ve already received now, before we start making any serious changes to the overall feature set or design.

  • “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.”

If Canon really intended to deliver the firmware upgrade everyone is begging for, Canon PR staff would certainly largely communicate about it.

  • I was at a canon sponsored event on April 1st. I asked the canon rep about manual control in movie mode. I was told it will be addressed and that canon is aware of the complaints and the fact that users are opting for third party lenses for iris control. He said it’s only firmware, but didn’t really specify whether we would be seeing an update of the current 5d2, or a new body. Said it should be resolved within a year which kind of sounds like a new body. Only canon knows… Time will tell.

  • The real Chuck Westfall mentioned that competition is good. I hope Nikon brings it in their upcoming DSLRs. Maybe then Canon might get serious about updating this potentially awesome camera.

Either way, I know I’m watching the Panasonic GH1 very closely. It seems like the perfect hybrid device. Forget Nikon… perhaps Panasonic might steal the whole show with user-friendly video and decent photos.

  • My next camera will be a hybrid. No more camera and a mino HD. I want an integrated device! Like how smartphones integrated a PDA and phone, I want stills and video. Can’t wait to see what Nikon’s move is!

  • I’m going FF soon. If Canon fixes the video control of the 5D2, they will make an additional sale. If they don’t, I’ll be buying a used 5D.

  • chucky said this was a version 1.0 attempt. but…stores can’t keep the 5D2 on the shelves as it is, so canon isn’t going to spend more money in a recession to upgrade a camera that is selling like pot at a rusted root concert.

  • “Fool me once, shame on you;

fool me…you can’t get fooled again!”

  • they have our money, what is their reason to “finish” their product? They just assume people will wait for the 60D video system (which will be finished) rather than not buy the 5D2 (esp seeing as tough they cant meet orders atm)…we’re all suckers… :(

  • I have a some hope that they realize if they want to stay #1 they’ll need to start listening to the people who have bought their cameras… it’s only good business sense, and Canon has come a little way forward in the past year or so in that regard. The best thing to happen (for us) is for them to keep losing market share.

  • It’s time the megapixel race ends.
I was hoping the 5d2 was going to be
an improved version of the 5d’s.
I want better pixels not more,
    – more dynamic range
    – less noise
    – higher useable iso
    since they added video
    – give me manual control and auto.

the only thing keeping me from buying the
5d is that it doesn’t have sensor cleaning,
    my 30d was always dirty… my 40d
nothing yet, so as much as I want ff
I’ll wait till till they fix the 5d2’s problems
    or release a replacement(5d3, 3d, 7d)

  • If they include aperture control in the 60D video feature-set, I don’t see why they couldn’t easily put it into the 5D Mk II as well. Especially if both are using the DiGiC IV processor…both bodies would be single-processor designs and would probably run 98% of the same firmware.

If Canon doesn’t implement it into the 5D Mk II, this would be a HUGE screw-up on their part, ESPECIALLY if they plan on keeping the 5D Mk II around for 3 years (like they did with the 5D).

However, if they plan to have a 5D Mk II replacement ready to announce in January 2010, then regardless of what the 60D does, we won’t see any new firmware features added to the 5D Mk II.

  • I agree with this post regarding the pixel race. I truly hope the 5D2 firmware update remaps the medium sRAW setting from 10 to 15 megapixels.

  • if you believe that it would be a big project to at least just add Av mode or even M mode to video then they have succeeded in suckering someone. it’s an absurd claim.

  • maybe my new body will be Nikon then. Just saying….
as someone said fool me once, but not twice. Canon marketing can do what they want and toy around with their customers and we can also do as we want and walk away to other brands….

  • agreed, but they still don’t quite seem to get it.
sure they have our money and the marketing dept. is clinking glasses. but maybe a year from now when we are too disgusted too stick with canon and nikon has the same high MP sensors with low noise all the people who have gotten too annoyed by their games will leave. already at the sidelines you certainly see more and more nikon.

  • It’s a shame they don’t give us manual control. They advertised the movie feature like crazy so why not deliver?

As mentioned many are using non-Canon lenses to have manual aperture control. However I really love Image stabilizer so I’m affraid I have to stick to Canon lenses… (for less than 50mm I use M42 lenses though)

We paid a lot, we have one major complaint and all they do is…… MAYBE release a new cam which means ANOTHER investment by us?? ugh.

  • I really hope they add the 25p!
it s simply not fair for us european customer!(we paid the same price…)
i m very very disappointed with Canon!

  • surprise no one is trying to reverse engineer the firmware and hack to better specs.
i am sure it is hard. but i am sure someone can do it…

  • Let’s put it that way, I need Manual Control for my work. The reason I put this amount of money into a still camera is the video mode. If Canon does not offer any solution within 6 months I will get rid of my 5 L glasses and two bodies and switch to another brand.

  • They still need to fix the low ISO banding that is still there even after the last firmware update, let alone the video controls. I was hoping that the 5d2 wouldn’t be another disaster like the 1d Mark III but I was wrong. The 5d2 is a great concept, but poor quality control and pre-release testing will make this another black mark on Canon’s line of cameras. Lucky me I have both a 1d3 AND a 5d2.

  • Canon didn’t really announce the vid features until they released the camera and it is a prototype throw-in.

This camera is more than worth the price for the stills alone.

If you can’t appreciate the tech : price ratio here and aren’t out creating, then you are the only one to blame.

There are workarounds available and real movie makers have always worked harder than you can imagine with much lesser tools.

Canon poses a great question to us all.

What are you gonna do with this thing?

    Stop whining peoples.
