  1. Where is the 30fps setting? I mean the 29.97 fps? Selected differently?

Is it possible to make dump of the firmware and share it now?

  2. He’s is set to “PAL” – therefore he sees the appropriate fps for PAL. Would he have set the cam to “NTSC” he would see “30”/”24”/”30”.

  3. I’d bet that if the option is currently selected, then its not available in the menu. For example, if you were in 24P mode, the 24P would not be a possible choice….since it would be pointless to pick a mode you are already in .

  6. Keep scouring the web folks, I bet we can find that unadvertised link to the download.

  7. Well it sounds like an early mid March and lot a late mid March. All good news, thanks CR.

To those how read OUR post, simply look at carefully. We do NOT post such silly comments.

We worked very hard for the Full Manual Control and the 24/25p updates, no matter how many fools are laughing around.

It was NOT the only reason for Canon to release it, that’s obvious and we would never say that.

BUT we know all the campaigns we promoted, and some not publicly know actions helped a lot in these regards.

You can check our Blog and review all the history since April 2009 (in fact it was earlier than the blog, from February 2009):

It’s a pity that some people with lot of free time and bad faith are using our nick and posting ridiculous comments that may confuse other readers.

We would appreciate CR Guy help on this regard, if possible. Thanks a lot in advance.

  13. Why would Canon delay 2.0.3 firmware upgrade if newly sold MkII’s have 2.0.3 included?

  14. Calm down Pavlov, it’s humour on a photography rumour website, it’s not important stuff – You have repeatedly paraded the fact that you consider yourself pivotal in this part of Canon’s international business decision, that’s cool, the message is understood, just chill out and enjoy the fact that the firmware is on the way.

    : )

  15. Shutterblind on

Are these the current settings or the ones that will be available once the firmware is updated?
Just curious as to what a before and after firmware is.

Sorry for the basic questions but your answer is appreciated.

  16. Whoever owns that 5D with the newest firmware needs to get in touch with Trammel Hudson of Magic Lantern. He is asking anyone with a new camera to make arrangements for a firmware dump of the new ROM. He wants to get a jump start on analyzing the ROM before the official release date.

  17. Now, that pisses me off. Canon take care of new customer fist than their royal old customers?

  18. HAHAHAHA! I only use my own name, but I find it hilarious that ‘they’ are so pissed off about someone using that name because ‘they’ are so enormously pretentious that they think ‘their’ word is God, and that everybody respects ‘them’ like a God. GET OVER YOURSELF! How many times have you posted now that YOU were the first one to post about the firmware being available at tech centers since early February? Why would you post this even once, if not only to bolster your ‘reputation’? I’m fine with the push to get a firmware update, but now that it’s out, stop bragging about how much of an insider you now are! It really makes you look bad. .

  19. I think its quite useless, changing the framerate from 30 fps to 29,97fps, and adding 24fps, audio manual gain….

    whats so useless?

  20. its 10 days away… stop whining…

You bought it withought it so what isnt there to be gratefull about.

  21. Zaphod Beeblebrox on

    Why no PHOTO Updates Canon??
I bought a DSLR to make photos..

I’d Love to see some new Features there too..
And a better fix for high iso banding..
Even the 550D has limitable Auto ISO and 7D has Auto ISO in M Mode.. Why not the 5D??

  22. Not at all.

You didn’t get what we said before, nor what we say here.

What we JUST asked is TO RESPECT other people’s nickname. As simple as that.

But no worries, write whatever you want.

We just wanted to share some things that are not publicly known, and that people under NDA can’t tell by themselves, but we won’t go further on that.

  23. What´s with the bashing of 5D TEAM? First people are unhappy he (I´m guessing “they” are really a “he”) pushes for sensible adjustments to the firmware.

And when we finally get it he can´t toot? Toot TEAM, toot!

  24. That’s a COMPLETELY wrong interpretation, and you are also missing lot of facts that are not posted on public at all.

No worries, we have dealt with all kind of people since the beginning.

We didn’t realize there were so many jokers at Canon Rumors, so we won’t share much further unofficial details here, if that’s what people really want and make them happy.

BTW: 720p is unofficially in a firmware for 5D Mark II :)

And 24/25p was in there since mid 2009, but… who cares, right?

But of course, don’t believe anything we say, it’s “all about our own ego” when we try to share such things with other users, that otherwise wouldn’t know about them, because people under NDA won’t ever tell to public.

Also when we asked to Canon many times, not publicly know, for an official release with improvements for all users.

  25. Son of Daguerre on

No worries, we have dealt with all kind of people since the beginning…

Or perhaps 5D Mark II TEAM uses terrorists the likes of members of Hamas and Hizbu’llah?

  26. Come on Camgirl76 !

Do you really still believe that 5D Team has anything to do with Canon decisions ???

It is unbelievable how people can be credible. 5D Team is just a bunch of teenagers who are trying to get the credit of Canon work.

But they did nothing to “obtain” these changes. They have no touch or contact or any influence on and with Canon.

Just a group of retarded trying to get some interest on a forum…

And the worst is… They got it !

I can not believe how many of you are writing “please 5D Team could you ask for this or that” or “Thanks 5D Team for what you did”… ridiculous.

And if you are NOT on NDA… then you simply do not know more than us.

    So shut up now.

  31. I see that as an additionnal restriction…you could record video before with PAL standard but at 30fps fully progressive…and the Digic 4 recomposed the signal in real time for pal display when using HDMI display. But since all the glitches for previewing properly on Full HD TV (such as Sony Bravia, or Sharp AQUOS) I begin to doubt there were any “recomposing” at all…so anyway this update must be useful.

  32. Fairly Obvious on

Lol Doug, learn to tell the difference here, one is a funny mocker (no blue letters in the title) the other is an annoying “team”.

  33. Well.. Do I believe 5D TEEAAM!!!11 has anything to do with anything? Well. Probably not alone. One girl/guy can do only so much, but when someone gets others supporting a cause, making lists and pesters Canon..

Yes. I do think it helps. It´s a lot better than all the haters saying “you are annoying, do you think Canon owes you anything, stfu” and so on. If consumers say nothing, nothing will probably happen.

TEAM is sometimes annoying, but has cute spelling errors and guts. That counts in my book. But I guess half the reason I feel like supporting MEAT ;) is because so many are on his/her back.

  34. It has more to do with big hollywood studios and bigwigs like Tarantinom Spielberg and Lucas amongst them. Also Magic Lantern had an influence. Very unlikely a online user campaign made any different since Canon already has similar working firmware a year ago that was released to to big budget studios that made Iron Man 2 and Harry Potter.

  35. GET the firmware Dumping program and DUMP THAT SUCKER!

    UPLOAD NOW!

    I’ll HOST IT!

  36. PS:

Personally I call this the Willy Wonka Effect!

What better way to stimulate sluggish ass sales of an 18 month old camera?

Release some into the wild with a COVETED GOLDEN TICKET OF FIRMWAREY GOODNESS!

  37. AlthalusTheThief on

Perhaps Canon is delaying the release to annoy 5dmark2 team and others for annoying them(Canon) and the rest of the world, with their whining about upgrading the 5DmarkII for free on their own time and money.

Perhaps everyone should just be happy that they’ve done what they have done.

The reason perhaps that the 720p60 wasn’t release is due to a hardware limiting issue. That prevents 720p60 from working correctly. As I understand it even Magic Lantern is having problems implementing the 720p60 function.

  38. Alright guys we know for sure that next week canon will release a new FF camera with all the new features the 7D has plus CLEAN 2k 4:2:2 video , autofocus in video mode and no rolling shutter! .All that For 3299,99$ it will be called Canon EOS 3D they will also reduce the price of the 5D Mark II to about 1989,99$ and the 7D to 1519,99$, the 7D will now replace the 50D. Also a new 24-85 F2.8 IS will be introduced alongside the new camera and a Kit should be available for about 4399$ .

  39. To record 60fps (which is 60i, not 60p) means double the number of images to record per second. This is much easier with a DUAL DIGIC 4 processor, i.e., the 7D. The 5D2 doesn’t have a dual processor and therefore heats up pretty quick. It’s OK with 30fps and a UDMA CF card, but at 60fps it would probably cook. Just a theory, but that’s probably the reason (Philip Bloom thinks this is the case also). No biggie, 24p and 30p are what you want anyway. BTW, it’s now the real NTSC 29.97fps, no longer real 30fps with this new firmware. EXCELLENT move on Canon’s part.

5D2 sales aren’t sluggish Dan, not sure where you got that one. 18 months old as still getting full list price. No, I don’t work for Canon, I just use the gear without griping about every screw that isn’t straight. You can have all the other models with their puny crop sensor, the 5D2 is king due to that luscious full frame sensor, where 16mm is truly wide and 15mm fisheye makes you dizzy like it should, NOT TO MENTION the killer low-light quality you get. The 7D is a waste of time there. Now that the 5D2 has NTSC 29.97 and histogram in Video mode and manual audio, the game is over for other models.

  40. if you want RESPECT then use a REAL name! simple as that! sorry, but i don’t respect nicknames. obviously, a whole team of people is not writing your posts, so put your name.

  41. thanks for the info! keep your posts like that – where they are informational and not just bragging about earlier posts. thanks again!

  42. ***** EXPLANATION *****

(hopefully clear enough, if not… sorry, but won’t be much more)

Each camera has a different “equation” with multiple variables and parameters that makes it more suitable (or not) for possible updates.

    Competition is one big variable/factor.

Famous directors/professionals giving suggestions are 1 variable of the whole equation too.

Customers requesting to Canon is (or COULD be, depending how much) another variable, and a VERY important one (IF it is BIG enough).

Since every company wants to make money customers satisfaction/feedback/requests DO matter (ask any serious Senior Manager at any big corporation about that if you want to confirm it).

The 5D2 has a very special equation, with many variables and specific parameters that made and makes it almost unique.

Aside that this rule applies to almost EVERYTHING in life: IF you don’t request, it’s more likely you won’t get.

(and applied to DSLR world, those possible improvements may remain ONLY for specific productions/companies, just like ALREADY happened many times before)

If someone doesn’t understand that, it’s because he/she didn’t spend enough time on this topic to understand what happened specifically with the 5D Mark II.

    – If someone spend some time reading all the 5DMark2 blog posts, information and TESTIMONIALS given, then he/she will understand a bit more of what happened and how important the customers influence was (and still is), as so many Canon Representatives already told, regardless of what Canon could “officially” state on their -sometimes funny and/or pathetic- Press Releases.

    – If you read carefully some Canon press releases announcing firmware updates for 5D2, they always mentioned customers feedbacks/suggestions:

“By Popular demand” in the 1st update 1.1.0 for Full Manual Control.

“Developed following feedback from photographers and cinematographer” on update 2.0.3 for “standard” 24/25/30 frame rates.

Sure, don’t ever expect to read something like “hey!, thanks a lot for sending such massive amount of feedbacks, requests and great ideas to help us make more money!”

    – What we did: to collect all possible information, to demonstrate it was possible, to encourage people to request fixes and improvements to Canon even when there was plague of naysayers saying “No, it’s impossible, Canon wont’ do that” and lot more arguments, and to spread everything as MUCH AS POSSIBLE. That took long and hard time indeed, many times literally almost like a job many days a week. Believe it or not, it doesn’t matter.

One person can do nothing. What CAN make a difference is “Community actions”. And that’s what we promoted.

    – One of the clearest effect of one campaign:

Few weeks after we started the “Calling Canon” campaign, and spread it across LOT of places (forums, blogs, renowned sites, etc), Canon USA launched an on-line survey SPECIFICALLY related to video (posted on this website too on September/October 2009) and even more specifically related to 5D Mark II (if you did the survey you know that). It was not a coincidence.

Here is the link to read more if someone is interested:

    http://5dmark2.wordpress.com/2009/09/04/i-called-canon/

The survey closed before expected date due so huge amount of feedbacks (try to do it now and you’ll see Canon’s message).

After 2 weeks Canon announced the 24/25p would be released on 2010.

Some times our posts may be a bit annoying, we know that and we apologize. But not all people read all posts and all websites. So it was necessary to spread the voice as much as possible, to let people know about what we ALL could do.

    – That was one of the multiple actions we did since early 2009.

We supported many others, public and not publicly known.

    – ALL (again: “ALL”) those variables were part of the equation that led the so much desired results, and not only because few important people supposedly told suggestions to Canon.

Most arguments managed by many people are speculations. We wanted to go much further than that, and keep a proactive attitude instead of just complaining or speculating.

    – We are not under NDA, but we have reliable sources that are. We WON’T EVER disclose them and won’t give a tracking clue at all. That’s our rule, like it or not.

    – We have few additional friends who anonymously helped a lot on these regards.

    – It’s up to everyone to believe or not, it doesn’t change anything. But of course we THANK everyone who JOINED any campaign to request improvements (that were and are possible) to Canon.

    – LATELY, we just wanted to share interesting unofficial information, because the people who are under NDA won’t ever tell such kind of things on a website, but we can if we keep complete anonymity and privacy. That’s why we will NEVER tell what the sources we get the information from are.

    – AS ALWAYS it’s much easier to talk than to do things, but fortunately after spending huge amount of time and efforts we found people who did take actions.

That’s the greatest achievement we did. And we ALWAYS THANK those “yes, we can” people, because that’s our attitude too, and we ALL made a change thanks in big part to that attitude.

    Cheers.

    ***************************

  43. That would make sense, except that the t2i also has only a single DIGIC 4 and has almost the same hardware as the 5D2 but it also has 720@60p. The only other logical excuse I can see besides a marketing standpoint is if the aliasing from scaling is much worse coming from a 21mp sensor, If that’s the case they should just do a cropped/windowed mode for 720p. The Dual DIGIC is mainly for high speed noise reduction on stills and should have no effect on video functions.

  44. After looong time of “read only” this is just my little comment.

I got my 5D in Dezember 2009 – long before anyone thought about any Firmwareupdates. Two days later i started hoping for such an update. But i really never though that it would happen. Then afer the first one i though “ok wow, they did something. Not all the stuff i wanted, but they even did some.” Now they gave as nearlly all we wanted.

I believe that all this would never happen without these crazy guys from all the “5d teams” and forums and blogs and and and… who never stopped posting and asking. It was sometimes annoying to see always the same comments, posts and stuff. But its a fact that Canon for the first time added a ton of new features to a sold product.

If there would not have been all the guys who screamed all the time – this would never happen.

So you guys have my respect – doesnt matter if it was exactly you or someone else or nobody at all. Just for your long breath and trys.

Just one other thing: We are talking here about some “pro” products that do cost some cents more than a web-flame-schoolboy could afford.

So why does 80% of the comments in this post sound like they are written by little kids who do not even own a 5d?

That for me. And hey kids, before you start flaming bout my bad english – how is your german?

    thanks again ;)

  45. We can hope now that Trammel Hudson should find with this new firmware code,
how to get the 60p !

    :)

  46. That’s a COMPLETELY wrong interpretation, and you are also missing lot of facts that are not posted on public at all.

No, it’s a fair interpretation of your position, you have done much to help remind Canon of what the 5DII filmmakers would like to see in the firmware update – people understand that (after all you remind us at most opportunities) – so like I say, just relax and enjoy to fruits of your hard work – there is no need to threaten to ‘get the teacher’ to clamp down on a little humour.

We didn’t realize there were so many jokers at Canon Rumors

‘We’ ? Did you have a meeting about the volume of jokers on Canon Rumors ?

It seems odd that an organisation (cough . . .cough) that can predict Canons every move on the 5DII would not be able to use it’s considerable resources to predict the amount of jokers on Canon rumours !?

    : P

I can give you the formula if that is any help . . . the amount of humour is directionally proportional to the amount of pious self importance, for every self important post (from anyone) there are 4.6 humorous posts.

And 24/25p was in there since mid 2009, but… who cares, right?

    No one.

Chill out, why don’t ya !

  47. Camgirl76

It’s unlikely that the ‘TEAM’ had much (if any) actual influence over Canon’s international business model, it’s plans for the DLSR market – specifically the Canon 5D mkII.

  48. Current specs . . .

When the firmware is released in a couple of weeks, the specs will be . . .

    1080p @ 23.98
    1080p @ 25
    1080p @ 29.97

+ Manual control over audio levels.

  49. To record 60fps (which is 60i, not 60p) means double the number of images to record per second.

    60fps is 60p (not 60i)

(‘Fps’ means frames per second. . . 60i means 60 fields per second. . . 2 fields make a single frame.)

This is much easier with a DUAL DIGIC 4 processor

60 interlaced fields per second is the same amount of information as 30p.

  50. : D

I think it is fairly obvious that the real 5D Mark II TEAM just posted that as ‘Toby’.

    Hilarious !!

    : P

  51. Blimey…..I can’t believe this ranting, slagging people off, name calling, arguing over a firmware release, I was just searching for a article on the Film making using the 5D2 and stumbled on this site…why don’t you all just go out with your 5D2/7D or whatever and take some pictures or make a movie. That’s what I’m just about to do…it’s beautiful sunny day here in Cambridge UK.

  52. “Some times our posts may be a bit annoying”: not for me, nor for most of the people here, I think. Indeed, a few seem to be annoyed more than a bit, I can’t understand why.

  53. …with 60p the cam is just getting to hot; Canon will continue to provide such a firmware for “special purposes” (this is probably what the 5D Mark II TEAM always claims as “we now 720p60 was there) but it will probably never come to the mass market – it’s just too difficult (and too risky for Canon when it comes to the cam’s lifetime and guarantee) to explain “switch of your cam after x minutes and wait x minutes before you take the next shot”. This is possible for professional “special purposes” but not for the mass.

  54. I’m not sure if your just a really subtle troll or just a moron, either way… read up or gtfo.

  55. I’m calling BS on that… not that I don’t hope it’s true… but in my experience… things that sound too good… are.

    Hope I’m wrong though.

guys guys guys, none of you can take responsibility for this, do you think us canon marketing execs sit on our asses all daymonitoring your blogs??? idont think so, we generate our consensus fromthe worldwideweb.. not your websites, so come down from the clouds and get over yourselves.

heck, ieven read the little dude at proost even thinks the firmware was his baby because he thins canon used his exact words to explain the firmware….

    aaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

    bwoahahahahahahahahahahahahha.

  58. If you settle for nothing now, you will settle for nothing later. Yes. I am quoting Rage Against the Machine.

Some people here seem to be working for Canon, excusing them for not releasing or wanting to do relatively easy firmware updates. Seriously. A guy did hack the 5DII by reverse engineering it in relatively short time.

Then again, I’m a die hard open source advocate. Can you imaging the wonderful things these cameras could do If Canon got with the times and let the community do their work for them? The sales would also increase If user created content was a possibility. I imagine at least a few Nikonites jumping ship. Canon could then spend time developing new hardware and probably sell even more cameras.

    /hippe

  59. People are just misinformed.

The digic chips have little to nothing to do with the video side of Canon DSLRs, essentially they simply pass the raw sensor data to a dedicated video processing chip.

  60. 5D Mark ii TEAM on

The team would like you to join us. We have been needing a girl to cook and clean for us around the 5d mk ii offical team house.

  61. Unfortunately not.

In fact the on-line training tutorial refers to what was recently announced, the official firmware 2.0.3 which doesn’t offer 720p50/60

The tutorial mostly shows what is available on 7D (a 7D camera back is used in many of the “slides” or steps)

Canon Australia didn’t update the tutorial.

  62. How dare you say that. I’m going to eat a gallon of ice cream, call my friends and whine my butt is to big, play with my cats and then get all emotional. You really hurt my feelings.

  63. Maybe that’s the mistake. What you take as “self importance” comments, there were in fact intended to share and spread some information, and not posted with self importance meaning.

Maybe language issues or our own many times poor or insufficient english is the reason

Maybe each one sees through their own crystal too.

That’s fine anyway, we’ll simply skip many comments and save lot of time.

Maybe we post in other language and leave the translation work for those honestly interested. That would be way LOT easier for us indeed.

  64. “teenagers”? LOL

“They have no touch or contact or any influence on and with Canon.” How can you be SO sure who we know or who we can contact to? That assumption is 100% “ridiculous” indeed.

“Just a group of retarded trying to get some interest on a forum…”

If we are retarded or not it is out of topic :)

In fact this is not a forum, anyway we don’t want to get interest. We just wanted to let people know about specific things, that’s completely different.

It’s OBVIOUS that everyone see everything through its own crystal’s tint…

Camgirl76 has a MUCH clearer perspective and feelings than all haters and naysayers that plague internet and real life.

Probably she is much more proactive than lot of people who like to criticize while looking others doing things.

Anyway, this was enough funny chat.

Flight C5D2 cleared for take off…

    “Adios amigo” :)

  65. Stop trying to be me. I’m going to cry more than I normally do. Here I go – now I’m crying.

Why can’t people just stop trying to be me.

  66. HAHAHAHHAHA!!! A girl to cook and clean! Finally somebody who knows the proper use of women!

  67. Full frame sensors are actually fairly retarded for anyone used to working in the motion picture industry.

All this supposed low light sensitivity (false by the way – it’s high iso noise reduction) is eaten up by the fact that if you want to keep someone’s face in focus you have to be shooting at a 5.6 if anything in the frame is moving – especially with canon’s wonderful electronic focus lenses. All this full frame hype is purely from stills people whining about.

This is targeted towards “Paul” by the way – the supposed expert on why Full Frame is so Luscious.

I sold my 5DII after it payed for itself 4x over with jobs I shot with it, and then bought three 7D’s which payed for themselves 3x over each as well. Sold one, and had the other one modified to a hard front PL mount for real motion picture lenses. No canon lenses in my cases!

Furthermore, I’m not worried about every screw of the camera, just the proper tools to make sure exposure and audio levels are monitorable in such a way to achieve PROFESSIONAL results. God forbid we have the tools to shoot professionally and get sound and exposure!

Have fun playing with your obsolete ass 18 month old camera, and I’ll see you on the next post about what the 3D could do better, or better yet – Reduser.net

  68. Have fun trying to shoot a wide angle shot.

Show your clients how bad ass you can be with a wide range of EF-S lenses.

  69. LOL. Yeah, the crop kills.
But since he is a RED user he is used to the Crop!

Better have some 14mm PL lenses.

  70. "Canon Team" on

Will all you self proclaimed “teams” stop using our registered names!

And just for the record, you didn’t know what it would contain before the announcement, we didn’t even know ourselves until just before.
