Both. In our most famoust and best store, we rarely saw this camera. There was always ‘XS, T1i, 50D, nothing, 1D Mark IV.
This still sells a lot and I dont think we’ll see a III so soon.
Rick on
I’m not sure whether to be relieved or disappointed that none of the listed lenses are on my current short list. :-)
Carsten on
Usually these rebates are the place to look for replacements coming up. Let’s go through the list:
The 5D2 so soon? We will see.
200mm f/2: A very recent lens. No chance.
85mm f/1.2 II: No, too recent. I can’t think of any technological development that would give a much better lens…. Having said that, night photography would benefit from IS…..
16-35 f/2.8L: No, too recent.
50mm f/1.2L: I don’t think so. But who knows?
TS-E 45mm f/2.8: The other TS-Es have been updated, and there are rumours floating about that a “niche market” lens is coming. This could be it.
24-70 f/2.8: On the short list of everybody for an update.
100mm f/2.8L macro: Brand new. Sales not up to expectations?
15mm f/2.8: Another niche market, old lens. Not even USM, so an upgraded version would be welcome.
135mm f/2.8 softfocus: Another old, niche marked lens without USM, this could fit well with the WPPI rumours.
100mm f/2.0: Great lens, but old. I would be surprised, but _some_ surprises I like…
Flashes: Can use an upgrade. Is far as I am concerned, Canon is well behind Nikon in flash technology. Plus the current flashes have a reputation of throwing up so much electromagnetic noise that its makes radio remote control difficult if not impossible.
So…. It is good to see the old mid-range non-USM lenses _might_ get upgraded soon.
Justin on
Be relieved if you owe taxes and sad if you are owed tax return.
Justin on
This is certainly a strange list, but it’s obvious it is meant to combat the Nikon paired body + lens rebates out right now. Their’s are a lot sweet imho though…
I think Chio meant the first, not both. Canon is most likely a year and a half out from releasing a 5D Mark III … especially validated by the fact that the 5D II is still extremely valid and an awesome tool.
I think with a lot of people sitting on the 7D vs 5D II fence, Canon is trying to make their choice easier for them … of course by baiting them toward the more expensive system.
Canon is really pushing the 5D mark II – I’m sure at its stage in production the camera is quite profitable for them. I was hoping to see the 17-40 on this list too. ah well.
Carsten on
Around here, at least, the 5D2 does not need any pushing. Sellers can’t get hold of them as fast as they sell them. Neither does the 25-105mm f/4L, BTW, for the same reason. I still have the demo out of the shop’s window on loan, since last summer!
Erik on
I would’ve liked to have seen the 135 f2/L in that list. Awesome lens!
kubelik on
very hodgepodge indeed … and not nearly as attractive as the Nikon array of rebates.
that being said … still cheaper than Nikon. in general with the 5D II selling for $2499 most places it’s still pretty decent if you’re looking to pick up a 5D II and a lens or two
kubelik on
I guess I made a mistake too — looks like Canon’s dropping the price on the 7D also … forget what I said about making choices easier
Wes on
“*Any Body / Kit configurations are eligible.”
Does this mean what I hope it means? Instead of the 5D Mk II, can I get any other camera body to go with the lens selection?
Justin on
I imagine this list won’t supplant the spring rebate program that Canon usually runs; only supplement.
Many of the lenses and rebates we all look forward to will be announced hereafter is my my guess…
Jason M on
Canon simply must update the AF on the 5D II to remain a serious player in that space. The product roadmap never should have given the 7D more advanced AF before the 5D had it. I will wait for a 5D III for this reason alone.

Just because there are these rebates does not in any way mean that any of these products are close to being discontinued or replaced.
As others have noted, the 7D is brand new, the 100 L macro is brand new, etc.
These rebates are probably due to the fact that this is normally a slower sales season for this type of equipment; that is all. Don’t try to read too much into this, and for those who choose to do so, enjoy the discounts!
Dingo on
Just relax…
Canon USA is just counteroffering an ongoing rebate sales from NIkON USA. Their offerings are quite good actually. Better than this one :(

Very timely – I saw the link to the lens/5D2 rebates in the comments of the previous thread on the rebates. Since there was nothing about the 7D, I went ahead and placed my order for the body-only this afternoon. Fortunately, I ran across this post tonight, and was able to cancel my order so I can re-order on Sunday and save $100.
Thanks, CR!!!!!!

Anyone want to give me suggestions on Buydig.com and how to go about getting them to throw in the $100 off of the 16-35 2.8 II lens that I ordered 2 days ago and is currently in transit to my home. Should arrive next Wednesday. They have a 30 day return policy. I guess I could just ship it back to them and turn around and order it again from buydig or adorama. Anyone been in a similar situation in the past? What did you do?
william on
BAD!! i just ordered a 5D II YESTERDAY from B&H and they have shipped my order!
I was waiting for 60D too long. the rebate on 7D seems further confirmed there will be no 60D any time soon.
I think the 7d rebates are the heaviest, perhaps the camera is not selling as well as expected.
Could that be because Canon decided that rather than improve low light capability or dynamic range they would just jam in more mega pixels? Don’t get me wrong 7d is still a good camera just could have been better.
Kai on
I read it as “all 5D2 body+lens kits are eligible”.
$500 off the 200mm f/2L is nice, but $4800 (@ Adorama) still a darn lot of money.

Where do you see the US-residents only clause?
I can only find that you must buy through an authorized Canon USA dealer, and you must be an end-user. So tourists should be fine too.

But alas no.

I’m having a bit of a feeling they use this rebate thingy as a stock flush auction..
With the release of the new IS II engine in their 70/200 (most popular, most sold, most portable lens in their lineup), it would be very odd if they didn’t redo the whole professional L series (especially the big fast sport glass first). If i recall correctly they were already talking months ago about redoing the hood mounts.
So i’d say, wait till after photokina or any other big fair this year, i’m sure the new series will be killing the current ones in focus.
Althalus on
Oops! I read it wrong. Should be able to buy it online as well.
to bad, my local bestbuy store have 2 7D’s in stock but recently a customer serv. rep. told someone they only take coupons and not manufacturer’s rebates … is this true ?
ABC on
The kit recently dropped in price over the last month or so from 3499 to 3299 USD. So you already have your discount built into the price.
Looks like these are U.S. only rebates? What about Canada?
I thought you were Canadianish-lovin’ Mr. CanonRumors guy…? Sheesh. Who’s side are you on anyways?
;)
Not For Me on
No, they re-valued the product that they were selling.
That’s not the same.
ABC on
Either way it’s a comparable price reduction. If they had kept the product at 3499 and given you 200 off in an instant rebate it would be the same. Would you have preferred that?
It’s really a matter of semantics. But the bottom line is that they recently lowered the price permanently, which is even better than a rebate during a limited time.
If you still would like a better deal, that’s one thing…but they did lower the price.
ABC on
Cameras sell best 2 times out of the year: during the spring/early summer, when people want cameras for vacations, weddings, etc, and of course during the end of year holiday season. Indeed, most camera vendors try to release products so they are ready for those times in the year.
Outside of those 2 times, it’s not unusual for camera manufacturers to offer additional discounts to keep the sales going. The rebates are not necessarily for equipment that is not selling; quite the contrary, sometimes vendors like to goose the sales of their most popular items during these slower times rather than waste the discounts on models that are dogs.

now sunday – i dont notice any mention of instant rebate on any authorized canon sites nor did their prices go down. in fact amazon consistently went up a few times for the 24-70mm f2.8: a week ago it was 1290$.

I think a lot of people are disappointed the 7D wasn’t a FF sensor. Perhaps that is the reason for slow sales. Though I think it has been selling reasonably well.

Maybe there are rebates in the rest of Europe, hopefully in Germany too.
