  • As usual we get completely stitched up on prices in the UK.

All the sites are listing it at £2499 which equates to $3,847.30

$2499 at todays exchange rate is £1,622.63, add on VAT and that makes £1906. So logic says it *should* be £1899 here but once again they ignore exchange rates and decide that $1 = £1.

It would actually be cheaper for me to fly to the US and buy one!

  • If your are buying a 400mm f/2.8, for example, and can’t go yourself, it is still cheaper to pay someone to fly over the pond, buy it for you and bring it back.

  • Seriously if anyone is going over from UK can you get me a MK4? There’s mule money avl too :-)

  • Don’t forget to add 8% duty as well as 17.5% VAT to non-EU purchases. While prices are always higher in the UK, the ‘introductory’ price for all camera gear is just ridiculous! £780 for a 500D body-only? I don’t think so!! Remember the 7D was £1700 body only when introduced, but soon fell to £1250. My advice is: WAIT…

  • The shots on his smugmug gallery look impressive. Many are handheld at 1/8s @ 2.8. Very nice indeed. Looking forward to some more from this lens!

  • I called B&H the other day to try and get some insight about the release. The guy that took my call told me that it takes about 3 months from when canon announces it till they list it on their website. Then he informed me that canon just announced it two weeks ago(he was off by a month) and it wouldnt be there for a couple of months. I thanked the guy for his wealth of knowledge and said that because he was such an a-hole i would just buy it somewhere else. I have also received a 1.4x converter that was sideways in the box(clearly had been opened, maybe returned, who knows?) and a B+W circular polarizer that had the plastic case cracked from some kind of impact. I know the crack could have been done by the shipping company, but the converter was definitely taken out of the box. I wish canon would put some kind of tamper resistant tape to seal the boxes of the equipment we buy. What would keep an employee from testing the IQ of the lens and keeping the good one for himself and send us the rest?

I have spent 6 to 7 thousand dollars at B&H which is just a drop in the bucket for them, but its the last penny they will see from me!

  • Yeah I loved the place but then they sold me my 70-200 2.8 IS without a warranty card and wouldn’t have anything to do with me afterwards. Grr.

  • Well they are also importing it to the USA from Japan and managing to sell it at $2499.

Whichever way you look at it that’s still a 20-25% more in the UK.

  • This is a welcome addition to the lens line-up. I love my current version 7-200 2.8 IS, but Canon MUST maintain its lead in the camera world and innovation is the only way to do so. Long-live lens stabilization. :-)

  • Now will some GWC with money to burn please sell me their “obsolete” mk1 at a firesale price please?

  • especially when I quote him from the mailing list at work :

“I’ve got carpal tunnel in both my wrists, tendonitis in both elbows and arthritis in all my fingers so to say that my hands aren’t very steady is an understatement. I’m also not especially good at remembering the proper hold of the camera body sometimes as I’m thinking too much about other things to remember that all important hold. For me, to have such steady images under such conditions is a true engineering achievement!”

  • The price for the lens in Sweden is ~25,000 SEK = 3,400 USD. It’s definitely more expensive than in the US, but for some reason cheaper than the rest of Europe. One interesting thing though is that the US site lists April as the release date while the Swedish site says March. So I’m hoping that even if it costs a third more that we’ll get it a bit sooner. Some sites here have it listed as coming in next week but the more reputable ones say March or 3-4 weeks.

  • Oh yeah, forgot to add – the suggested retail price in Sweden set by Canon was an absurd 39,700 SEK = 5,500 USD i.e more than twice the US price. Fortunately the retailers seem to have ignored it and landed on a more ‘reasonable’ street price of 25,000 SEK = 3,400 USD.

  • In Czech republic, this lens is on pre-order for 59,999 CZK, which is 3150 USD. The I version is here available for 47,999 CZK which corresponds for 2500$. So in here, if you spend 2500$ (price for II version in USA), you’ll get just I version. Sad…

  • I noticed that many of the images were taken at 200mm and F:2.8.

This is really a step up from the old 70-200mm lenses that I’ve owned, they were good, but not at 200mm and F 2.8

The 1D MK IV probably did not hurt the quality either.

  • I will be traveling to amsterdam this saturday and staying for to weeks and then again in april for a month id be happy to assist provided you met me and give me the info of what you would like.

  • Man, I thought $2,500 was outrageous considering a used 70-200mm 2.8 IS goes for around $1400 on CL. But seeing how much it costs in other countries I guess this is a good deal? These lens cost as much as my camera… but those 1/8s shots do look great.

  • It looks like owners of the old version are about to reap a
windfall. There is no way the new version of this lens is worth
that much more than the old one. Get ready for hot demand for
old lens to drive it’s price higher.

  • Nikkor 70-200/2.8 VR II is 2300$, so it’s not just Canon unfortunately. If it was just Canon, then the price would have dropped sooner and more perhaps, but now…

  • I wouldn’t be so sure that this lens is not so much a worthy improvement over its predecessor. The early word is that this could very well be Canon’s finest lens to date.

Sure the price seems too high, but one cannot really judge without trying it out.

  • In denmark its preorder price is about 17.500 DKR – 3200 USD – the lens is still missing on the official price list from canon, but the old 70-200 2,8 L IS is listed for about 3700 USD and the street price is 2500 USD. Just after the release the preorder price for the II was about 3800 USD, but now it went down to 3200…

My equipment got stolen by a burglery and I waited for the 70-200 II lens to come before i wanted to buy it (i didnt wanted to buy a “old” lens when a new better one was released within the next short time)

  • I got a crap experience from B&H on my 70-200/2.8 IS. The Canon box is all the way stuck to an non-padded side of the shipping box. This means all the delivery impact will transfer to the Canon box and its $1500 glass inside! Complained against on their survey and their manager just said it should be ok even without padding.

Then months later, when I found B&H has the TSE 24/3.5 L II in stock (which was unavailable then from almost all retailers in US), I quickly put that in shopping cart and finished up the credit card payment. I received order confirmation email. But then days later, they sent us an email saying that it’s not in stock. I complained and their manager argued that other customer was ahead of me at the same split of second of my transaction. Well, they don’t know what it’s meant by a transaction in which if other process gets a hold of an inventory there will be a lock preventing other process even access it, not to say complete a transaction. They didn’t apologize.

B&H is such an arrogant merchant.

  • Let’s see, you had a bad experience once, and you ordered with them again?

    Who’s the idiot here?

  • Still not decided if this is a worthwhile upgrade from the existing 70-200 f2.8. I hear t is very sweet and the samples look good, but again, with all new Canon gear…the price, darn it Canon, I know you need to make some momey, but there are somme serious increases being thrown around here in the UK.

  • I did some calculations and found that at least in the case of Sweden, the price isn’t Canon’s fault. The additional money is collected by the government and not by Canon or the retailers.

Start with a US price of $2,500, add 12% import duty and 25% VAT and you are at $3,500. As the price will be $3,400, the profit margin in Sweden (for Canon or the retailers) is $100 less. So in Sweden at least it’s a question of high taxes rather than a different pricing policy.

That’s not surprising – if the price would be significantly lower in the US people would just order it from there. The internet is really amazing when it comes to increasing competition and lowering prices.

  • Can’t wait to hear more about this lens. I have a feeling it will be mounted on my 5DII most of the time.

  • Was wondering, is there a way to find out what “number” I am in the line of pre-orders at adorama online??? Or do I have to call to find out? Or do they even let one know what they are in line?
    I’ve never pre-ordered before,,,

  • Canon finally assigned a catalog number to the lens today and it is available to be ordered in their system as of today. My rep told me to expect first deliveries in mid March.

    Steve

  • 2500$…. amazing. I’m wondering how many lenses they expect to sell for this crazy price.

The last release of a prime lens under 500 euros, it was begining of 90s.

  • already preordered mine a month ago. Worth the money If you intend to “make her work for it”. Sport photographers should benefit immensely from the added sharpness.

  • I don’t see how that T2i Iso6400 is better than the 7D. You can’t say much about iso performance unless it’s in dim light. My 5Dmk2 can probablly do that at Iso 25600. That said, I’ll probably still trade in my T1i to get T2i when it comes out, I was very impressed with the 7D with the short time I had it.

  • I think the poster is trying to tell some bad experience which is just about the fact. It’s useful to other buyers to know, while your rude comment is both offensive and useless to readers.

  • Ace, your point is not related to theirs — they are talking about how big of a jump they need to pay to upgrade. Can you use your brain?

  • the real stoneking didnt write the statement above. if your not man enough to use your own name please dont slander mine.

  • No matter what is considered standart or good low noise these days, this photo still looks ugly noisy to me. I think it’s very subjective from person to person. So if this is 6400, then I wouldn’t use ISO 1600 and above on daily basis. On my 450D, I don’t go over ISO 400, unless I really have to…

  • So what you are saying is that you have not tried the new lens but feel that you are still qualified to say that it won’t be any better than the old one? Yeah, really valuable review there.

It sounds to me that you don’t like the fact that you invested in a lens six months before a new model was released. Sour grapes and all that..

  • It looks like you only read the part of the review you wanted to read.
I clearly said that the old lens has a terrific reputation for taking spectacular photos and that the new lens will cost at least $600 more. As you can see it can now be preordered for mere $2499 now on Adorama. Since I wrote the review the old lens went up $100 on Amazon and the new lens is being priced two hundred dollars higher than I predicted. That’s a total of an $800 difference. If you feel that this new lens is worth $800 more than the old one then go ahead and buy it and make my day LOL. For your information, I purchased my lens for $1649 with free shipping. I am actually thrilled that this ridiculous price increase will do nothing more than make my lens much more valuable and I am still getting amazing photos.

  • Heh, I just found out, that Nikkor 70-200VR II is for 65,999CZK in CR, so that means 200$ more than Canon. Over 3300$ for Nikkor and over 3100$ for Canon, which is funny, since Nikkor is 200$ below Canon in USA…

  • you should have saved your money and bought the f4 version. i dont have either(im waiting for the 2.8 mark II), but looking a the MTF charts it seems as if the f4 may be just as good as the 2.8 at all apertures except 2.8 of course. Ive heard complaints about the sharpness of the Mark I @ 2.8. i borrowed a friends Mark I for a vacation in Hawaii and was very pleased with the results. lets face it, 1649 is expensive and so is 2499. there is no right or wrong decision. you paid more money to get the 2.8 over the 4 and were paying more money for the same reason to get the mark II. I also wouldnt benchmark too many prices from amazon. they were selling the 70-200 Mark II right after it was released for something like $5000 for all of the suckers in the world.

  • You originally asked how I am qualified to comment on the new lens when I don’t own it. At least I actually own the old one unlike you. I don’t know what kind of photo work you do but if you ever want to take indoor shots without using flash I doubt you would be just as happy with the f4 version of this lens. There is a big difference between the light gathering ability of these lenses. Also, I was quoting the preoder price of the new lens at Adorama and not Amazon. It’s certainty possible that the price might come down some once the lens is in full mass production, but I doubt it will ever sell for much less than the Nikon version. If you really read my review you would have known that I basically felt the old lens was so good that I doubt anyone would even notice the improvements in the Mark II. I also said that no one should assume anything about the new lens until it is tested and reviewed. You might want to wait for those reviews before you buy it. On the other had you could save yourself a bundle right now and buy the old version before it is gone forever. Buy, hey, everyone has has got to do whatever is right for them like you said.

  • oops, thetoolman is upset that nobody is buying his justification for his lame purchase and taking things personal. IMHO, thetoolmen mentioned it as review of mk I and mk II and all I read in that review is buyer’s remorse.

  • I own the MK I too and I would never have bought it if
Canon had priced it at $2499.

  • What’s with this pissing match? Canon just raised the price of admission with a huge price increase for the same thing with a little lipstick on it. Am I supposed to feel bad because I own the old lens?
    What are you nuts?

  • The MK 1 version is a bargain now if the new
price on the MK II holds. I read thetoolman’s review
and that’s pretty much all he said. Sounds like he’s
glad he bought the old model to me.

  • Buy the old model before they stop selling it or the price goes up any further.
