  1. I’ve read lots of people had to pay to get this problem fixed, is Canon going to reimburse them?

  2. For those who think that you can just test glue, unfortunately, it just isn’t easy, even with sophisticated testing, sometimes it fails. Having worked with adhesive bonded items in aerospace applications, no matter how much care you use, things can and do go wrong.

The adhesive manufacturer can change his manufacturing process without notice, or even use different ingredients, primers can be applied incorectly, or left off, or a buyer will buy from the cheapest source and get poor quality, the surface might not be cleaned properly, the list goes on forever.

This is why a good design includes mechanical attachment along with adhesive. The 5D apparently did not have the backup mechanical attachment, and if so, it was a poor design. The 5DII is said to have a mechanical attachment along with a improved adhesive.

Lets hope that Canon is monitoring repairs and identifying unusually high failure rates, and then issuing a service bulletin. We can’t know why they seem to suddenly be paying more attention, there may have been some management shakeups, or just that someone retired and the new guy is taking his job seriously.

I’ve seen that happen in my experience, a engineering drawing was wrong for years, and the new replacement employee spotted it and complained. The retiree had apparently been fixing things quitely for many years. Even so, we issued a service bulletin to allow our customers to check. They did not find any problems.
