We are just catching up on CES after taking some time away to travel. The big consumer electronics show used to be a big deal when the PowerShot line-up was selling in the millions, we'd usually see a new G camera and a slew of other compact goodies. Those days are long gone.

At this year's show, it looks like Canon is ready to go all-in on VR and spacial imaging as they showed off 2 new lenses along with the PowerShot V series VR camera, which they have teased for quite some time.

Canon VR Concepts

  • Concept Model 001: APS-C 4D Dual Lens VR Lens
  • Concept Model 002: APS-C 3D Stereoscopic Lens
  • Concept Model 003: 360° / 180° 3D VR Camera

While VR/AR is still very much a niche segment, Apple's foray into the space may move the needle in the right direction, and Canon could become pretty much the only option for affordable content creation for the medium.

Currently, Canon offers the RF 5,2mm f/2.8L Dual Lens Fisheye for VR content, and their own software suite along with third-party software for VR live streaming.

Canon hasn't officially said much about these lenses, but we expect at least one of them is going to end up in production. The focal lengths of the lenses is unknown, as Canon looks to have taped over the identifying information.

  1. The tape makes me think maybe it is more than just a prototype.
There would be no reason to put any label on a prototype that they do not want to show off.

These are definitely completed products that will make it to market at some point.
  2. Looks like Canon isn't exactly that conservative, lagging behind camera maker, like you can read in masses of bashing comments on DPRev. Well, everybody who knows about Canon's history knows this already ;)

Whenever Canon does something first it is called a weird niche product that no one needs.

Or gets criticized (DPR forum) for features it has or should have got. ("Nobody needs a 24-105 F/2,8, they should have made an F/4 or a 35-150" etc...) and so on and so on.
I'm waiting for the R1 criticism (no global shutter, no reduced DR, no native 250 ISO )
Sorry, I forgot. Criticism has already started here on this forum, before the R1's specs have become public !

The integrated grip makes it too large!!!!!
  6. I do wonder how well the RF 5.2mm f/2.8L Fisheye sells. It must be selling decently if they are rolling more lenses like that out.
The imminent launch of Apple Vision Pro and the amount of money Facebook spends on the metaverse likely play a role as well.

Yep - when Apple gets involved, you generally know its heading for the mass market and, in this case, there will be a surge in demand for content (and the tools to produce it).
  8. It's good that APS-C is getting some good unique lenses, I wasn't expecting that. It gives me hope that they will convert some of the EF-M lenses to RF-S such as the EF-M 22mm and 32mm.

I remain unconvinced about mass-market appeal for prolonged headset wearing, but I am interested in capturing more of the 3D nature of things. Especially for things like dragonfly close-ups, but I suspect it will not be suitable for macro purposes.

Do you know any kids between 10-14? The Oculus/Meta Quest comes off when the parental restriction kicks in or the battery runs out, and not before.
