Isn't it similar in build to the 7D II body in terms of metal chassis and solidness? Otherwise, it's not an R1 at all.

I'll have to do some looking around. Not intending to by an OM1 but I'd like to see what it really is before I praise it or throw shade on it.

The R3 launched at close to the R1 price, drifted down over the later years to sit just above the R5II. I suspect the R3 remains in the lineup solely to provide a lower-cost option to the R1, just as the long-in-the-tooth EOS RP remains 'current' as a lower-cost option to the R8. I'm with CRguy on this, I can't see where they would put an R3II, unless they launched it at a price very close to the current R3 (which I don't see happening). Maybe if they take the line downmarket, I just don't see that as being likely.

But I'd be surprised if they did release a non-high-res fast R3 II, since that would cannibalize the R1, methinks, which has a few more years to go before a R1 II sees the light.
Not that I would care... all I want is the RF 35mm 1.2

Ignoring video and appreciating the well balanced photo specs of this A7V, the one major downside left is ergonomics: I tried one out (again) this weekend and I agree with you, I almost cannot use it. It is as if they design the grip without ever mounting a lens on the body... A1II/A9III got that almorst right! What's stopping Sony to bring that shape to the A7 line?

Thx for the reply. I wasn't really looking to buy anything from the refurbished sale, but usually I do see the offers and I didn't this time. Next year, I'll probably spend thx in the states, so I might be chasing a deal in 2026. This year, I finally purchased the R8 as a small and handy second body. Since it was 999 € on Black Friday in Germany, I had to pull the trigge. It arrived yesterday

The long time rumored high-res camera comes to mind. Faster speeds for extreme files would sure be helpful. If it is based on the R5ii as a sibling camera, it could fit the picture. Cheaper 3rd parties with 15fps handicap. I rather adapt EF or native RF with R6iii 40fps.

I would welcome a "real" R5 C replacement. The C50 was not it (as nice at it might be).

Beautiful shots, Alan. I love the perfectly sharp bird in this bokeh on the first one, and the one-legged heron with the feathers raised on its head in the second one.

Bill Claff relies on user-submitted RAW files to generate his data. I strongly suspect that whoever sent him the R1 files used electronic shutter instead of manual shutter for the captures. Notice how with the other recent(ish) R bodies (R3, R5, R5II, R6, R6II) there are plots for both mechanical (unlabeled) and electronic (ES) shutter, but for the R1 there is only one entry and the PDR is lower than expected. But it's pretty much spot-on with the R5II in ES.



When his R1 data came out lacking the mechanical vs ES comparison, I offered to send him file sets but didn't hear back. I'll contact him again, (by email though we are practically neighbors...he lives in the next town over from me). Or maybe I'll just shoot the files per his specs and send them.

Careful there, there are real people that fit into the "dwarf" category, not just those that live in Moria, just ask the actors who played Ewoks - some of whom got told they were too tall! But when compared to even a 300mm lens + full frame camera, it does look a bit challenged for size.

2MP is enough, the only difference between 8MP and 32MP is how much downsamling is done before posting to IG or TT.

Bokeh is now something that can be done in software. Just like we don't need lenses producing pictures that fill the entire frame, we don't need lenses that create bokeh. Software correction to the rescue!

I too miss the "exciting new lenses", though 2025 has been quite an expensive year for me (2X R5 II, 4 lenses). But I know my 14 TSE and 24(20)-70 f/2 will come in spring or some other season or year...

Perhaps the R7 II could be stepping up to be a real professional body like the 7D II was at the time.
