The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM III Has Been Discontinued

I still have my EF 70-200 f/4 original! Works great; takes a 1.4x fantastically; takes a 2x when necessity strikes; and slips into a travel pack quite well for what it is. DLO keeps it modern for large and small farm game. But, I do look at the 2.8 side and wonder whether I should get one for the collection. There's an article from Grant Atkinson on the quality of the 2.x combo with the EF 2.8 II (and I presume III) that keeps nudging me. Other priorities first, however.

In my opinion, the extra-compact 70-200 f/4 and f/2.8 RF editions make these long-term road apples or collector curiosities: very innovative for their compactness, yes, but not useful for general bag inclusion at the prosumer level with the lack of extender support (it means more lenses, or swapping for lenses that are aperture compromised in the 70-200 range). I think moreso that they showed off what can be done with the then-new mount, more than anything — while also letting Canon say "me too" for the range. My f/4 remains an excellent 70-200 f/4, a great 98-280 f/5.6, and good 140-400 f/8 (f/9 to milk it). Yes, solid alternatives exist that cover that range, but none of them are f/4 at 70-200. The f/4 EF nicely balances IQ with extendability, weight, size, and cost. If the lens is making money, then I think that the 2.8 achieves the same thing in spades with some nice weekend flexibility thrown in. Unless it's the compact 2.8, that is — then it's somewhat boring. 😜

Nice article, thanks! It's neat to see the EF -> RF evolution in one place.
I recommend you to upgrade to an EF 70-200mm f/4.0 IS version, if you can get a good used copy. It is much sharper than the non IS version. Same story like with the f/2.8 non-IS and IS versions back then. I have the f/4.0 IS version and still like it...

Canon’s Retro Camera is Coming as the EOS R8 Mark II

I am a bit late here, but I always have to laugh about Nikon's approach to "retro F" digital cameras. Here is the original top plate of an FM-2, a camera I used extensively before I went digital and switched to Canon:
FM-2.jpg

This I call a clean, functional classic camera design, here you have all you need for (stills) photography, that's it, the camera supports everyone who wants to frame and shoot in a flow w/o any disturbance caused by bad design.

And what did Nikon with their digital retro F digital thingy bodies? Here for comparison the top plate of a Nikon zfc:
ZF thingy.jpg
WOT a MESS! Obviously, this monster is designed for naive young nerds who think that classic camera design equals a lot of wheel & button bells & whistles to get the mystic process of taking an image done. Such a chaotic design reminds me of extremely pimped vintage cars like this one:

I am pretty happy to read that Canon seemingly takes photography too seriously to throw such a nonsense into the market.

Canon Officially Announces the RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ

I agree!
Never a real mountain hike* (Alps, Dolomiti) without the 100-500. It successfully replaced my beloved EF 100-400 L II.
* Means for me: 15-35, 60 macro (Leica R adapted), 24 TS-E, 70-200 and 100-500 + 2 R 5 II bodies. Funny how quickly one gets used to the weight!
Wow that's way too much weight for me! I bring maybe a second lens (usually 35 1.4) and a Mini 5 Pro drone with me and I am already overly loaded

PS: I also like your portraits !
Thanks  It is rare nowadays that my daughter collaborates... These were taken with the 100-500 or the 85 1.2

There are lots of those out there. I recommend URTH. I think I have all of their RF mount adapters. The C/Y, FD, M39 and Leica M adapters get a lot of use. I have started to buy some K mount lenses too.
Late addition: there are even RF/LTM (Leica Thread Mount, "M39") adapters available, I have a very solid one made by Novoflex. It's a lot of fun to adapt such really vintage lenses to an EOS R camera...

I do not have this dilemma since I do not have a 70-200 😅
But I genuinely love hiking with the 100-500. It's the perfect lens for Alpine mountains, assuming you're ok with panoramas....
Weight is about right for me, IQ and AF speed are great and I like that it doubles up as almost-macro as needed.

All the mountains / skiing images here were taken with the 100-500

This is also my dilemma, when hiking : 70-200 or 100-500.
Most often, the 100-500 wins because "you never know..." :p

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM III Has Been Discontinued

I was never really interested in the 70-200mm lenses and I couldn't quite figure out what appealed to a lot of people. The EF mkiii was still really heavy so I figured I´d just get the EF 100-400mm ii which was only 200gr heavier but had double the reach. In 2021, I ordered the RF 100-500mm and it was backordered by several months. So as a "temporary" lens (hint: I still own it :ROFLMAO: ) I got the RF 70-200mm F4 L and man was I impressed! Love the range, perfect for landscapes, catches a lot of details, lightweight (this one is really is) and super flexible. After that, I gave the RF 70-200mm F2.8 and EF 70-200mm F2.8 iii both a try. I didn't like the placement of the control on the RF version and the long throw. Furthermore, it is better than the F4 but not 1.500 $ dollars better imo. The EF version is still pretty heavy (also using an adapter alongside of it) so I didn't keep it.

I am really curious about the RF 70-200mm F2.8 L Z and one day (once my kid/ kids go to school) I'll probably get one for all those events and sports. In September, I am shooting a 50th birthday party and I will borrow the lens for a couple of days. So excited about it.

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM III Has Been Discontinued

I made a little tribute/showcase to the 70-200Z the other day in a separate thread: https://www.canonrumors.com/forum/threads/what’s-coming-next-from-canon.45141/page-6#post-1045676

Can't recommend it enough! Here's a sample of the images from the other thread. The quick zoom throw is great, the 0.6x magnification with a 2x extender is great, and all of these shots are with a 2x on:

You could exchange RF 70-200/4 for the RF 100-400 and still be around the same lightweight 4 lbs for the lot. Does make sense if you dislike being a pack mule ;)
Hmm but 400mm is usually the shortest focal length I want :p

I used to carry a ridiculous amount of gear, but now if it doesn't fit into a regular backpack then it stays at home.

Canon Officially Announces the EOS R6 V

There R6 V does have the multifunction shoe, it just does not support a flash. It does support, for example, the DM-E1D Stereo Microphone (I have one that I use with my PowerShot V1). Presumably, it would also support the Tascam XLR Adapter.

It could support a flash (one of the EL flashes directly, or an older EX flash via the AD-E1 adapter). As you suggest, Canon would need to limit the X-sync to 1/80 s or 1/60 s, and I suspect that is why they don't support it currently.

Yes, it is possible that Canon could launch an external EVF to work with the multifunction shoe on the R6 V. Older EVFs (e.g., the ones for the M-series) will not work. Here are the contacts on the EVF for my M6II (left) and the DM-E1D:

I guess because this is considered more video centric? Neuro, will it not support a trigger either?

Show your Bird Portraits

I like the shots and I like the shore birds (often they are pretty difficult to ID) but you badly messed the order (and probably the ID's):
the first shot is the Verigina rail (actually Virginia rail :)!). After that are four photos what I think is the Greater Yellow legs -"GYL", (not absolutely sure for the fourth one): the base of the bill is/or has some yellow/orange, in the Lesser Yellow legs (LYL) the bill should be all dark; the feathered part of the bill is separated from the nostrils (according some authorities - like Richard Chandler, it's reaching the nostrils in LYL); the joints of the legs are too swollen for LIL (good visible when the legs are strait!). The last five photos are all the Least Sandpiper: yellow legs, North America (and some more differences from the other two yellow-legged "stints/peeps" in the world). I don't see ANY Spotted Sandpiper!

Canon Officially Announces the RF 20-50mm f/4L IS USM PZ

Quite an interesting lens. Add this to an R5 and RF 70-200 f/4 and you have a full kit for just 1.77 kgs (4 lbs). That would make a big difference when hiking out to get the shot. My current 5Ds with say 24-70 L and 70 -300 L is 1.7 lbs heavier ! Ouch and I’m getting older :(
When I'm "hiking" I wouldn't generally take a lens shorter than the 100-400

This is exactly what I thought when ordering this little zoomlens. A perfect equipment for cities (if a 24 or 17 TS-E is included).
