I hope the zoom lens is the RF 70-180 f/2.8 STM to complete the zoom trinity of lenses (16-28 f/2.8 STM $1,050 USD + 28-70 f/2.8 STM $1,150 USD) at a much more affordable price point. Currently our only option on RF mount is the RF 70-200 f/2.8 L for $2,800 USD, almost triple what Tamron charges for Sony E mount shooters & Nikon Z mount shooters, also $1,150 USD more than what Sigma charges L mount shooters. Canon might save you a little money on a camera body price but you will break even with Sony, Nikon or Lumix on the very first lens that you buy and every other lens that you buy on RF mount afterward gets very, very expensive compared to the competition.

A power zoom with step zoom functionality. The PowerShot V1 does that, for example.

It’s interesting to see how many are proposing upgrades for a lens that pretty much perfect for what is intended for. I’d guess a mkii of the ref 100-500mm would either get minor upgrades or if there a big step forwards we’d probably have to wait a long time. So far, I’d only like two features:
-: TC compatibility throughout the zoom range
- a lock switch/ button when the zoom is the 100mm position. Kind like the 70-200mm F4. If Canon could come with a lock button that works at every focal length (or the 135/200/300 stops) that’d be super awesome!

I don't want APS-C. That just means another $1500+ camera with a slow zoom lens. What i want is a G16 or Ixus sized camera with modern tech and sensor and a good quality 24-100 or 24-200mm lens.

Plus, a lighter one than the current 28-70 f/2. This and the with 24mm wider end made me to decide against the f/2.0 and go for the f/2.8 RF zoom.

To me, Canon is more photography's Toyota - not always fashionable but very reliable As I posted multiple times here, my wife as a Nikonian has an extended gear that she caresses much more than I my Canon gear. But we had to send Nikon cameras and lenses so frequently to repair service (broken mirror box, dead buttons from a few drops of rain, several dead AF drives) that I learned: if you can compare in real life, you know why it is wise to stick with Canon. At least this applies if you need a really rugged gear for wildlife that simply works in harder environments. In the past 15-20 years I only had one repair with my original 7D (dead thumb wheel), that's it.
