Show your Bird Portraits

Enough of mirrors and back to resolution. The EF 100-400 L II with EX 1.4 is still the sharpest lens I have in the 600mm range. All with R7. My Anna's hummers are very friendly this time of year. I think they know they are on the dole 🤣.

My challenge of the summer: Little birds sitting in the reed.
Hard to spot, hard to focus, hard to shoot.

"Hard to spot, hard to focus, hard to shoot" and after that not much appreciation... But once you may see something rare in the same circumstances, you should be able to take the photo, I mean practice is good thing! If I could I would put here 5X(y)

Did Canon See the Writing on the Wall with the RF Mount?

I think you missed the rather LARGE point that eventually you wouldn't be able to afford anything made in China, unless you are a rather wealthy American. And that is assuming that trade relations normalize in the meantime, too. Demographic collapse in China is baked in--hence why the CCP feels a need to invade Taiwan as even losing a war is preferable to losing power. All of the collapse can then be blamed on the war and the West.
I'm European actually and aside a full world war like WW2 I fully assume I will be able to continue to buy Chinese products (of course with a few years disruption in electronics products if there is an invasion of Taiwan). Why do you think I will not be able to afford Chinese products in the future ?

And even if I couldn't buy Chinese products, as a consumer I would still prefer a market with more competition than less (of course if I was working in this industry it would be the opposite).

OMG, all possible lens choices are too good!

Isn't that the truth? I was quickly wiped out during the pandemic as far as gear goes. I haven't a single RF lens. On the positive side, I managed to hang on to my R body, Canon EF 135mm f\2L, Tamron 45mm, and dozens of very old M42 mount lenses.

I can add one new RF 'L' lens a year, starting next year. Yes, my R is old, but I haven't shot with it much and it takes wonderful still life and portrait photos. It's slow as heck, and an R6 Mark III is on the far horizon, but I want glass.

The RF 28-70mm f/2L is the obvious first choice for me. Then Canon releases that damned RF 24-105mm f/2.8L with internal focusing. #$@&!

My obvious second choice is the RF 85mm f/1.2L. Then the RF 50mm f/1.2L. Simple. Then Canon releases the VCM primes. UGH!!!!

It was far easier when there were a few known 'great' lenses for what the project required. It was easy to choose. Now, from where I'm sitting, we are very spoiled. Thank you Canon.
Indeed I'm also stuck for choosing my RF transtandard: buy the 28-70 f2.0, buy the 24-105 f2.8 or wait for a lighter or wider 28-70 f2.0 MK2 or a 24-70 f2.0. the Sony's f2.0 zoom prove us that it is a real possibility that canon will release them too, so for now I'm stuck in analysis paralysis...

And that's from someone that bought a R5 MK2 and currently shoot with an EF 24-105 f4.0 and EF prime lenses.

Canon Releases New Firmware for the EOS R1, EOS R5 Mark II, EOS R6 Mark III and more

What about Canon R5c firmware update? We need better auto focus in photo mode, we need automatic vertical display in video mode so that we don't have to go to menu and adjusted manually... Canon R5c have vertical display in photo mode, they should have it on video mode as well..

Canon should give us also in photo mode option to take a video, at least in classic HD and 4K so that we can take a video while we take a photos, in order to save time going from one OS to another. Canon should know that many of us are multi function video - photo users. Many times for wedding's, we need quicker switch over video - photo mode (operation's) in a second. 4, 5 second for us is to long to loose what we need to capture. I am suggesting in photo mode HD 1920 x 1080 60f/s and 4K 60 f/s in normal video recording to be added in photo mode.

A Look into Canon’s Ergonomics

Canon’s Ergonomics Evolution are good... I am now using also Canon R5c along side with Canon R6 and I can tell that I am fine with workaround. I love Canon R5, R5c, R5 MII Ergonomics Evolution, I love design as well. When I attach on Canon R5c Canon RF 70-200 f2.8 lens, I can easily be approached by other people asking me to take a photo of my gear with they cell phone... :) Many time's happen in recent days...When it comes to functionality, business as usual with Canon... :) We are waiting new firmware update for Canon R5c. We would like to have automatic vertical display in video mode, so that we don't have to adjusted in menu all the time. We also need better auto focus in photo mode. Canon should give us also in photo mode option to take a video, at least in classic HD and 4K so that we can take a video while we take a photos, in order to save time going from one OS to another. We all know that Canon R5c is one of the most expensive cameras, and there for we need to take max options of functionality. R6 is even much easier to be used between the photo - video. I personally love Canon a lot, ll never go to other manufacture. I am a Canon user since Canon 350D, many of you don't even know when that Camera was launched... Since then, I changed to 450D, 650D, 6D, R6, R5c...I am about to buy Canon R6 MIII to... So, we deserve to have best out of best....

Best Cameras for Video Under $1000

The EOS R is almost a guarantee for trouble free photography.
Mine hasn't frozen once, nor has it ever overheated or had any other kind or mechanical or electronic issue. A most reliable camera, like its predecessors 5D III & IV.
Omg, what a flashback. you're right. I once shot in -15°C with the EOS R (not Antartica weather, but pretty cold for the mild part of Germany) and it worked perfectly. I wonder if my R5 will work under these circumstances.
Fortunately, the internet haters failed to convince me to buy another brand.
Interestingly, in 2018 my EOS 1000d failed me (actually I failed it because I let a huge wave in Havanna hit the camera) and was looking for new cameras and tested several models and brands. I read about the EOS R when photokina opened and my initial reaction was "naaaah". Two or three days later I was at that photokina, shot with the R and knew: I want this camera :) ever since I don't believe in internet reviewers anymore. Most of them are just talking BS and don´t know or use their cameras.
Of course, it was not perfect (EVF, touch-bar, lack of joystick), yet, totally reliable.
Yes, as mentioned very often. It's flaws :/ I was always hoping for a EOS Rmkii, but the R5 basically is that. Better in almost every way, expect for heat (and maybe cold weather?).
I use it less often now, having replaced it with R5 IIs, but if I quickly need a camera or a backup, I know it won't let me down!
When I got the R5 I sold the R because I thought I´d never use it again. Funnily, I never keep unused stuff. I sell it, invest the money otherwise and keep away from collecting. But this camera still lets me dream. Maybe I'll get a used copy to reminisce.

A Canon RF 300-600mm f/4-5.6L IS USM on the Horizon

I guess it will stay again just a rumor. It became so silent about it so don’t think any wildlife lense again.
Slowly becoming really disappointed with canon.
I don't think we know either way at the moment. Surely they will produce more wildlife lenses. Given that Sigma has a $6600 300-600 f/4.0 with probably twice as much glass as a Canon 300-600 f/5.6L would have, I do think that a ~$8000 300-600 f/5.6 would be possible for Canon. I do expect Canon to be twice as expensive as Sigma generally, but in this case there's also half as much glass. But that could be wrong! Who knows.

As for being disappointed, certainly that is your own determination to make. I love my R5II, it's absolutely incredible. The 70-200Z and 24mm VCM are the two newest Canon lenses that I have, and they're both fantastic (the latter all the way from 70-400mm when including teleconverters). The 70-200Z is "the sharpest interchangeable zoom lens we've ever tested" per The Digital Picture (https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-RF-70-200mm-F2-8-L-IS-USM-Z-Lens.aspx).

I think it's important to not get too emotionally invested in rumors here, especially in terms of timeframe which is frequently wrong, even if the folks here do their best to verify things; they fully admit timelines are difficult and often change.

If Canon can make a longer zoom anything like the 70-200Z, it will be incredible. IMO the Z has nearly perfect handling, great internal zoom throw, prime-like sharpness without teleconverters, very strong sharpness even with 2x TC, fast and silent autofocus, and a great 0.3x (up to 0.6x with 2x TC) max. magnification which is very useful for small creatures that allow some proximity (but not the sub-6" needed for a macro lens). So long as Canon doesn't get too greedy, it would be very hard to turn down the next big L zoom based on their recent work.

EOS RE-1 - Anything new?

I actually spit my coffee up when I read "simply because it is too ugly". Unreal to me that someone would consider Canon cameras ugly and not buy a Canon because of the way it looks. Then again, there are people out there who still buy Pentax.
You’d better tighten your seatbelt when you read this post by Ivor Rackham, a “professional photographer and writer”. He is an Olympus ambassador.

Rumors continue to swirl around the Sony A7V

speed. it's 4x faster in e-shutter doing 12 bit - canon uses a ramp comparator, so the more bits the slower the ramp.
I know it's faster, and I understand 12 bit being the standard, and the performances are pretty good but, if we had both options, at least we could choose to get a full output of the sensor using electronic shutter. This way, we simply can't.
