AF spot size on Eos R vs. 5D Mk 4

By the way, I left Canon this summer with buying an Sony Alpha 7 R Mark 4 combined with the Sony 200-600mm lens. This is an very good camera, good picture quality at low Isos, but an confusing menu. My need seemd to be satisfied, Canon does not offer such an combination with high MP, fast AF and 600mm at low weight.
But in practice, I am not satisfied. There is an small AF spot missing. The flexible spot is not small enough. So many pictures are not sharp at the eye. It is an lottery game, if the eye is sharp or something around, like nearer parts of the bird. Stopping down is possible in bright conditions, but if you need faster exposure times, this works not well.
I will switch back to the EOS R or 5DIV and my heavy primes. My 5DIV is out of duty - forever - a new body is needed.

This camera model has some problems when working with long zooms. Please, start reading from this post https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4419725?page=6#forum-post-63246107 until the end of the thread.

SMC Pentax-F 100-300mm compatibility...

You didn't give us much to work with. It depends on the body. There are several adapters available.

RF and EF-M should work with the adapters due to the extra space, but the lens will be full manual. Manual focus aid (zebras) in these bodies can be helpful.

Some very thin adapters allow you to mount the lens of an EF. Pentax K Lenses have arms and other features that may protrude in the body. Most only recommend EF-S bodies which should have room for the elements that protrude. Modifications may be necessary to mount on EF bodies. Optical view finder on EF may be problematic unless you get a chipped adapter to allow focus confirmation. It still may be difficult with a long telephoto. Magnified live view may be your best bet with EF/EF-S bodies

EOS R Firmware Update Wish List

Did the 5D4 even do what you're saying? If I remember right, if you zoom in and then flip from photo to photo and the AF point was in a different spot, I don't think it automatically moved your viewing area to the new AF point location. This would be nice for sure, but I'm not too bent out of shape that it doesn't do this.

I don't know of any Canon camera that does that, which I why I keep hoping for it to appear :)

RF24-105 lens barrel play

Fair enough. Sometimes I wonder if I can feel the IS elements moving in my 70-200, but I’m never sure if I’m just imagining it.
I feel the wiggle in my 24-105 too and I can see a wiggle in my 70-200 (I am semicertain it is the IS but actually just posted about this in a seperate thread :D)

My canon shop said the "wiggle" feel in the 24-105 is normal and is due to the IS. (Still uncertain about the 70-200.

Canon EF or RF: Shooting Medium Format Lenses with Kipon Adapter

I'd rather rely on Novoflex adapters...
Advantage of MF lenses, highest quality ones !!! is that one uses only the centre of the image circle, so, far less vignetting, better sharpness distribution. It's worth a try.
PS: Vintage Hasselblad (Zeiss) lenses aren't expensive either.

OH thank you!!

I"ll have to look into that.

I'm always for getting multi-use out of any lenses I buy....and always fun to get a unique combinations and the looks that might come up with....

Canon 70-200 F4L IS noisy ?

thanks for all the replies and mainly confirms what i thought - that it is a part of what this lens is - it is noisier but i can put up with it for its great performance and as long as i know its noisy I can be wary of when to use it - i generally use an 85 prime during wedding ceremonies so will stick with that as this one could be a little annoying when silence is needed. The images are excellent which is the important thing and its not faulty just the way it is ...

Cheers and HNY !

New Canon Cinema EOS information rolling in [CR2]

I watch Netflix on a 55” LG 4K OLED,(internal Netflix app), 92” HD rear projection set(Apple TV) and now a 120” 4K projector(internal Netflix app)(just replaced the 92” two days ago). I’m also a cameraman who shoots HD and 4K and I see the images coming straight out of the camera onto professional and broadcast OLED monitors, so I know what good looking source material looks like and have a good benchmark with which to compare. A good looking Netflix stream of 1080p and up looks damn good. If you think it looks like old 460p YouTube videos, something is wrong somewhere in your chain.

I dont doubt you can certainly jugde a good image. My guess is, Netflix just uses a very low bandwith here in Germany. I looked at the streaming quality at a friends tv, and it was the same. Sky and Amazon are even worse. The netflix-Rips in the internet are way better.

I attached 2 screenshots where its especialy well visible. The first one is from the witcher episode 2 around 5:44, the second is from el chapo Season 1, episode 1, around 15:02. The details in the shadows are pretty much non existant especialy in the door and around the candles. The banding in screen 2 is truely insane. Its only 5 shades of grey!
The screenshots are taken on a 4k screen, our internet is very steady with 250mbit, we pay fo Netflix UHD. The app and different browsers behave similar. So I don't think its a problem on my end. YouTube does look absolutely fine.
What I also dont like is the missing DTS sound.
I would love to see comparison screenshots, maybe you can check these example scenese. My guess, its about the bandwith netflix "gives out" to users in different areas. I guess they try to get away with the absolutele minimum where people will not complain.

Favorite lens for that special Canon color

Try turning on EFCS, that cured that problem for me. Also 1/100s seemed to be a bit better than 1/160s, but it becomes hard to tell at macro distances.
Thanks! I will need to learn more what the EFCS is. I thought curtains are only the topic when using flashes.. just found an article describing EFCS and shutter shock (which it says is common problem for all modern cameras both DSLRs and mirrorless. I came from 40D to 5D IV - huge jump from stone age to modern world :)

Most rented photography & videography gear of 2019 according to Lensrentals

yeah, paid from sony to recomand those cameras.bla, bla, bla

Heh. Still waiting for my check though. And it has been years. Can you talk to Sony and the others and encourage them to cut those checks for me? ;-)

Meanwhile, in the real world...

I know outstanding photographers (depending on what kind of photography you do, you may know of them, too) who use Canon, Fujifilm, Olympus, Sony, Nikon and other brands. All of them have fine reasons for their particular choices, and all use whatever gear they select to make excellent photography.

Earlier this week I was in the field with a group of these folks, and among them were people using gear from almost all of those brands — friends shooting side-by-side, talking photography, with utterly none of this dumb brand animosity. (One good friend was working two cameras, one Canon and one Sony. I was using Canon and Fujifilm. Another was shooting a Nikon system.)

The whole My Brand Is The Only Brand nonsense gets really old, really fast. It is even dumber that dividing into warring camps over things like:

coffee or tea?

Coke or Pepsi?

Toyota or Honda?

Hot dogs or hamburgers?

It is fine to recognize and discuss brand and model differences, but becoming so personally invested in this that one comes to hate folks who make a different choice is just plain nuts.

EVF and photosensitive epilepsy

Sorry, I can't really help; but, I will note that the refresh rates are different on different models. My Panasonic G9 offers two rates - 30 Hz and 60 Hz. Other models might as well, I just haven't paid any attention. If you were aware of a specific fundamental frequency that acted as a trigger you might be able to find a camera body that avoided that rate.

"Canon to launch upgraded CANON iMAGE GATEWAY service"

After the Irista shutdown, Canon is going to redesign the iMAGE Gateway service:

"We are pleased to inform you that in March 2020, Canon will substantially revamp its existing CANON iMAGE GATEWAY online photography service, strengthen its connectivity and compatibility with products and other services, and provide services to help customers manage and use their images.

The revamped service will have a new name and improved functions – we will share further details with you in February 2020. To make way for this service, we will close the current CANON iMAGE GATEWAY service in mid March 2020 and later that month all of your image files and albums will be available for access with the upgraded service, so that you can experience the new benefits it will provide."

I wonder if they will integrate some of the functionalities developed for Irista. Still, the terms of use are different.

Note that users taking advantage of the wi-fi upload service it will be disabled while the upgrade takes place, while the models in the September notice will be no longer supported.

Where the hell are the new Blackmagic Design video monitors?

I have been really eyeing up the new Blackmagic 12G 5" and 7" video monitors for the last few months. The 7" one looks like it would really work for what I want to do with it. Unfortunately, it seems like their release date seems pretty elusive. It looks like they were announced back in September with an October release date. When I got interested in them, B&H was saying they would come out in December. Now it seems like it's anyone's guess. I'm selling a video camera, hopefully to replace it with one of these, and I would hate to find someone to buy the camera before I can obtain one of these to replace it.

OpticalLimits Reviews the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM

If it does (as the reviewer claimed), then DPAF should mostly cover it up. If a future RF camera also uses phase detect AF that's when the problems will show.
DPAF IS phase detect AF. It won't cover up anything. As was said before, the Camera could simply take a selected aperture value into account during focusing and thereby make focus shift irrelevant in AF mode.

24-70mm f/2.8 and IS

You can see that all have their own disadvantages, either the size or the optical quality or the IS system itself.

So yes, they have waited until they could do one for the new mount, that is not too big while also being optically better than the EF 24-70 2.8 II
All the other FF mirrorless competitors (Nikon, Panasonic, Sigma, Sony) have decided to leave out IS from their 24-70mm f/2.8 lenses and rely on IBIS instead, which suggests that it isn't easy to do.

Firmware: Canon EOS R v1.4.0, this is a major firmware update (Update: Firmware removed)

Well you would be wrong. I also never install a new update for a couple of weeks to see if there are any major issues. Most pro photographers I know are the same.
Actually, my reply wasn't directed at you but towards the post you were quoting where rgeorge33 was complaining about Canon's mirrorless program
