And here is evidence about the loss of resolution with increasing f-number. ePhotozine has measured the MTFs of lenses on the 5DSR. I have plotted them for the best lenses under where they are diffraction limited. Under ideal conditions, the MTFs should tend to 5792 lines/picture height. You can see how the image loses resolution with increasing f-number

And I find them usefull. I have C1 configured for single Point AF with the exposure set so that it is suitable for birds and animals in the shade. And the C2 is my BIF / Action mode, with zone AF, shorter Shutter time and some focus setrings for better tracking. Without these custom modes, I would probably fond the customization options in the menu less usefull, as they would have to be applied globally, right?

Ahhh, you mean the "Custom Shooting Modes?" (a/k/a "Custom Presets")

I'm surprised the 80D has more than the one that the 70D and 60D had. The last x0D I've owned was the 50D that had two. All three of the bodies I currently use have three, and I do use them at times.

The fact that they were about the last to market with a full frame sensor camera is typical Canon, made more obvious by the fact that they had the foresight on the lens side to make these lenses FF when they didn't have a camera for it. (unless you count the 1DC or their still cameras).

Like I said, I own a set of these lenses, and I use them on a lot of projects. They are sharp, and have a clean, neutral look. Like you said, compared to a lot of the glass out there they are lightweight and therefore popular on smaller productions, and in situation where small is needed. I don't really hear high end DP's talking about them in the same breath as Cooke and Zeiss though.

Those are good points. All I'm saying is they were used on one of Netflix's biggest budget shows last year, Altered Carbon...and I'm sure they're being used on other high budget films. And the fact that Duclos (a high-end lens shop) has offered a PL mod for them that's been popular, maybe there are some high-end DP's using them. We've definitely come across some who love them, and rent them often from us.

Historically that's never been the case, the Canon 24-105 lenses have always suffered in IQ compared to the shorter range. I don't know why, since the Sigma 24-105 Art is reportedly excellent.

My Canon Mk I was disappointing and was quickly offloaded. Maybe it's because the 24-105 is setup for larger-scale production for inclusion in FF kits, it has always been considered a barely-L. Appropriately enough the red-ring often fell off.

At some point, they will have to decide. But When? The decision may have already been made, we are seeing the past when we look at patents.

I was always conflicted whether to bring a bag of strobes or wheel around the ranger pack. I did plenty of that back in my strobist days..

I have a WD My Passport SSD. It has an SD card slot (not useful in your case) and a USB port. Plug in the card reader in the usb port and it will backup the card. They have a spinny disk option for more storage.

From what I can tell people do use these hard cases, In some cases (no pun intended) rather extensively.

I find that about half of my lenses benefit by AFMA, I've checked dozens over the years. I was among the first to pre-order Focal. It will show you when your lens is not focusing accurately.

Canon included it because it saved them money. Rather than have people shipping their lens back for adjustment, they can do it themselves. It was first offered on 1 series cameras.

The recent "L" lenses like the 24-70mm L II and 70-200mm L II as well as my 100-400mm L II seem to be more accurate, but the 24-70 needed about 5 points. Lenses like my 35mm L needed 17 points, so I sent it to Canon and it came back perfect. Some like my 100mm L need 10 pts which is borderline, so I use it with the AFMA adjustment. I bought a Sigma 15-30mm f/1.8, it was way off, and unfortunately, the camera I intended to use it with did not have AFMA, so it was trial and error to get it reasonably close using their dock.

Third party lenses benefit the most, because they don't emulate Canon's protocol perfectly and AF accuracy can vary based on the body. They can be adjusted with a dock in many cases, but only if you know how to set them, and AFMA is needed to do that unless you want to do hundreds of trial and error tests.

We're loving our EOS R. I think it's a blast to shoot with compared to our 5D mkIII and the colours over the Sony A7III which we also use, are much better in our preference. nope. it was in interview with Canon official. they decided to limit number of AF points to 5000 in R as smaller size of the AF points makes it difficult to manage.
the smaller the sensor the lesser the maximum number of AF points.

they can keep their is ,but would love new design 400mm f5,6 with new all lens making developements.
Its not fair zoom lenses doing better image quality.
If nikon can do 200-500mm f5,6 with price 1300E ,how about same price 600mm 5,6 what weights 2kg ??

I was using my 100-400mm lens on a tripod to take pictures of the lunar eclipse. I got some decent shots. But as totality approached, I was having more trouble finding the moon and focusing on it. The heavy lens was pointing almost straight up, and the ball head wasn't much help.

So being lazy, and cold, I decided to give up.

Just after midnight, in the midst of totality here, I decided for grins that I would take my G7X II out and see what I could get. I guessed at manual settings and focused on infinity. With the tilty screen and the limited zoom range, it wasn't hard to get the moon in the frame. When I looked at the results on my computer, I was surprised to find how well the red moon showed up, and there were even starts visible. I didn't do anything to the colors in camera RAW.

I own the R. The shutter is only closed when the camera is off. This coating could be beneficial for sure.

I am always confused to have the zoom ring close to the cam body because I want to stabilize my 70-200 4 and 400 5.6 close to the front of the lens. Shake of 1mm at a distance of 200mm makes only a quarter of the angular movement than 1mm at a distance of 50mm between both hands resulting in 4x better sharpness (maybe a factor 2 in reality due to other effects).

In the manual at the bottom of page 150 and in the notes on page 151 are some of the cautions. In low light situations with a wide open lens and high shutter speeds its particularly a problem. That might occur when a flash is used in a dark area and the lens is set to full aperture.

There's also never been a Roman numeral "I" in any Canon lens or body name. Only "II", "III", and "IV".

“100-400mm” becomes a generic description once there is more than one model of a lens with that zoom range so people like to invent a descriptor for the original version to avoid confusion, hence the retro terminology “I” or Mk I. Though, we don’t do that with 7D and 5D series. Interestingly, we tend not to use “Mk” with the bodies but abbreviate those to 5DIII, 5DIV etc.
