Canon R&D = very old technology. Evidence found.

Are you really sure about that.....

The 1DX was released in 2012, and you are suggesting that 6 years previous to that the mark 2 was in the field?

Far more likely that the camera was a 1DS Mark 2, which was in production from 2004 to 2007

It must be true, the internet says so ;)

(sorry for not making the irony stand out more in the post, thought the GoPro comment would give it away - will be more careful in the future (y))

Canon EOS R vs 5D Mark IV - Pros & Cons

[QUOTE="It's no noisier at iso 6400.

Hi AlanF,
Thanks for the sharing.
5DSr isn’t any noisier than 5DIV at ISO6400?
For most of the review I saw, it is way noisier above ISO3200 compare to 5D4.
Just curious.
Thanks.[/QUOTE]
I should definitely think so too. The eos R is quite a bit noisier than the 1dx2 also. Smaller pixels, more noise, I don’t think it’s any way around that when the sensor are from the same generation, and when then 5dsr is older, I don’t see how they would match. At least not on paper, if it’s visible in every shot isn’t as obvious.

Anyone watching Grand Tour?

TBH, their biggest selling points is the camaraderie and general lack of political correctness. Personal favorites of the trio include the TG Bolivia Special and most of Season 22. It is a scripted show, well probably not all the breakdowns, and I'm sure they shot some scenes multiple times. I did laugh at Clarkson using a 5DSR and Hammond using a 1DX MK II.

Canon printer refresh roadmap?

I really have no complaints about my PRO-1000. I personally don't see a need for them to come out with a new printer line any time soon. I feel like they really put a lot of thought and development into the PRO-1000 through 6000 line of printers. Mine has performed just about flawlessly. I would be really surprised to see something new come out soon, even if they are a few years old at this point. I certainly wouldn't be in the market for a new one even if one was released. There's really nothing about the PRO-1000 that I wish would be improved. Although, admittedly I don't have a desire to run roll paper on it.

Patent: Non-L RF Mount zoom lenses

I think I have seen a couple of days ago in Berlin one of these lenses already. I was sitting in the train waiting at a train station when in front of my window a young Asian guy came walking along on the platform. He was about 5 or 6 feet away from my window. He had a big Canon mirrorless cam (probably the Canon R, the Canon logo was above the lens in the same position as in the Canon R) and a white telephoto lens attached to it. There was no adapter. The white lens was attached directly to the camera, which caught my attention. He took an image and checked it on the screen. Judging from the size of the lens, I assume it was 70-200mm f4. There were no words written on it. It was all plastic. No red ring.

In Berlin?
It was a film camera, for sure ;)

Another dead memory card

I use CF size cards only. I have never had an issue with SanDisk, which is all I will buy now. I have had three somewhat high capacity Delkin cards and two of the three failed fairly quickly. I got them because that was the brand they sold at the photo lab I was working at, but I will never buy Delkin again. (The Delkin card reader I have been using for years still works well though).
Like most of the card makers, the memory is purchased from a supplier. You never know for sure if you will get a batch that fails sooner. I've seen posts from people having issues with every brand.

Delkin Black cards use SLC memory which is said to be more reliable, but that does not guarantee that failures will not occur. After 20+ years and hundreds of cards, I have seen no failures, but I do not use cards for as many cycles as some do. It did see one Card failure damage a camera that I sold. The person had a camera failure and needed a replacement. I sold mine along with a memory card. When the person went to put their memory card in the camera, it flickered and died. Then, they realized that that same card had ruined their previous camera. Mine was still in warranty so Canon fixed it. The card was a Hitachi, I think it was a type II, the type with a micro drive in it. I have one in my box of old cards, I think that the 5D MK IV will not accept them if I recall correctly. Its been years since I used it. I also have a PCMIA Type III used by my Kodak DCS 460 that still works.

Canon EOS R Continuous Eye-AF Sort Of!

No, I’m talking about when continuous is enabled. I just quickly did a “C2” mode for this eye-AF workaround, and seemed logic to pause AF when I’m doing settings via the screen etc. I want continuous AF for the “hack” but the option to pause like video AF(y)
Sorry, in that case it's best to wait for firmware updates and hope that "the hack" will be obsolete :) (fingers crossed)

new Olympus EM1X - Everything and the kitchen sink - updated feature list rumor

And here is evidence about the loss of resolution with increasing f-number. ePhotozine has measured the MTFs of lenses on the 5DSR. I have plotted them for the best lenses under where they are diffraction limited. Under ideal conditions, the MTFs should tend to 5792 lines/picture height. You can see how the image loses resolution with increasing f-number5DSR_ephotozine_New.jpg.

Looking at 80d and 77d

I'm talking about the custom modes on the mode dial, C1 and C2. The 80D has them, the 77D doesn't. As far as I'm aware there's no way to save custom modes if you don't have those modes on the dial.

And I find them usefull. I have C1 configured for single Point AF with the exposure set so that it is suitable for birds and animals in the shade. And the C2 is my BIF / Action mode, with zone AF, shorter Shutter time and some focus setrings for better tracking. Without these custom modes, I would probably fond the customization options in the menu less usefull, as they would have to be applied globally, right?

Ahhh, you mean the "Custom Shooting Modes?" (a/k/a "Custom Presets")

I'm surprised the 80D has more than the one that the 70D and 60D had. The last x0D I've owned was the 50D that had two. All three of the bodies I currently use have three, and I do use them at times.

Canon to release PL mount versions of their Cinema CN-E prime lenses in 2019 [CR3]

I think what I was meaning was the true cinema crowd...feature films and whatnot shot on Alexa, Varicam and even Red, (which has generally supported the EF mount mores than the others). Rental price doesn't really factor into their equation, and not having a PL mount for all these years, has generally kept these lenses off of a lot of shows, unlike Canon's Cine zooms, which have a PL option, and are very popular. Even last years launch film for the c700 FF used mostly lenses from other manufacturers (canon made a point to mention during the demo that this camera worked with many of the lenses high end DP's are used to from vintage Cooke, to Leica, Zeiss et al) and I think the only canon prime they used was the 20mm that was launched at the same time.

Full frame is another story. Now that it's becoming more popular on the camera side and there aren't a lot of (reasonable) FF lenses on the market. Canon is in a unique position. I've always said that Canon has a leg up in the FF market, and its surprising that they don't exploit it. The fact that they were about the last to market with a full frame sensor camera is typical Canon, made more obvious by the fact that they had the foresight on the lens side to make these lenses FF when they didn't have a camera for it. (unless you count the 1DC or their still cameras).

Like I said, I own a set of these lenses, and I use them on a lot of projects. They are sharp, and have a clean, neutral look. Like you said, compared to a lot of the glass out there they are lightweight and therefore popular on smaller productions, and in situation where small is needed. I don't really hear high end DP's talking about them in the same breath as Cooke and Zeiss though.

Those are good points. All I'm saying is they were used on one of Netflix's biggest budget shows last year, Altered Carbon...and I'm sure they're being used on other high budget films. And the fact that Duclos (a high-end lens shop) has offered a PL mod for them that's been popular, maybe there are some high-end DP's using them. We've definitely come across some who love them, and rent them often from us.

Patent: Canon RF 24-80mm f/4L IS & more

I'm thinking of getting the 24-105L, a 24-80 just does not have the zoom range I'd like, and IQ will be so close that it doesn't matter.

Historically that's never been the case, the Canon 24-105 lenses have always suffered in IQ compared to the shorter range. I don't know why, since the Sigma 24-105 Art is reportedly excellent.

My Canon Mk I was disappointing and was quickly offloaded. Maybe it's because the 24-105 is setup for larger-scale production for inclusion in FF kits, it has always been considered a barely-L. Appropriately enough the red-ring often fell off.

Canon #1 in Japanese market share for both DSLR and mirrorless in 2018

I think I've covered this already, but all personalities or reviewers have their own agendas, but the end product is what you see in the public domain for better or worse depending on where you stand. We can't control the dialog, but i'm not sure I would label all of them controversial or biased. You can choose to listen to the dialog or not, but if you do, you can determine if the criticism is fair and weigh your own opinions from there. Personally, the best gauge of whether a company is hitting the bulls-eye for me is whether those products fit my requirements. There is a vast difference between a company's market share and how well it is suited for my own needs!

Btw, nice photo. I don't shoot stills much anymore, but I always respect people shooting with off camera lighting because I know how much work it is lugging around heavy pelican cases and balancing light setups. I was always conflicted whether to bring a bag of strobes or wheel around the ranger pack. I did plenty of that back in my strobist days..
Thanks, but there was no flash used in the photo. :)

MFA for 5.6 lenses?

AFMA is a solution in search of a problem for most lenses. Unless you know exactly what you are trying to "fix" you are far more like to make AF worse. I think Canon includes this "feature" because they know compulsive camera tinkerers love it. The idea that every lens needs to be "calibrated" with AFMA is not supported by my experience.
I find that about half of my lenses benefit by AFMA, I've checked dozens over the years. I was among the first to pre-order Focal. It will show you when your lens is not focusing accurately.

Canon included it because it saved them money. Rather than have people shipping their lens back for adjustment, they can do it themselves. It was first offered on 1 series cameras.

The recent "L" lenses like the 24-70mm L II and 70-200mm L II as well as my 100-400mm L II seem to be more accurate, but the 24-70 needed about 5 points. Lenses like my 35mm L needed 17 points, so I sent it to Canon and it came back perfect. Some like my 100mm L need 10 pts which is borderline, so I use it with the AFMA adjustment. I bought a Sigma 15-30mm f/1.8, it was way off, and unfortunately, the camera I intended to use it with did not have AFMA, so it was trial and error to get it reasonably close using their dock.

Third party lenses benefit the most, because they don't emulate Canon's protocol perfectly and AF accuracy can vary based on the body. They can be adjusted with a dock in many cases, but only if you know how to set them, and AFMA is needed to do that unless you want to do hundreds of trial and error tests.

Review: Canon EOS R by DPReview

We're loving our EOS R. I think it's a blast to shoot with compared to our 5D mkIII and the colours over the Sony A7III which we also use, are much better in our preference. Here's a link to a video comparison we did between the 5D and the EOS R - if you want to see side by side comparisons (shot on 50mm 1.2, 85mm 1.2, and 135mm f2):

When do you think EOS R

The "points" are actually clusters of DPAF pixels, so Canon can market the sensors as having between a single AF 'point' and 30 million. I think the biggest bottleneck is the processing speed, the digic 8 probably can't handle more than 5000 clusters at the same time.
And since this is Canon we're talking about, lower end models get the stupid treatment: the M50 has the same digic as the R and has only 150 'points', instead of 5000/(30/24)=4000 or 5000/(1.6^2)=2000 one would expect for the mpix or size difference.

nope. it was in interview with Canon official. they decided to limit number of AF points to 5000 in R as smaller size of the AF points makes it difficult to manage.
the smaller the sensor the lesser the maximum number of AF points.
