Odds of us seeing a G7X II Successor this year?

I was using my 100-400mm lens on a tripod to take pictures of the lunar eclipse. I got some decent shots. But as totality approached, I was having more trouble finding the moon and focusing on it. The heavy lens was pointing almost straight up, and the ball head wasn't much help.

So being lazy, and cold, I decided to give up.

Just after midnight, in the midst of totality here, I decided for grins that I would take my G7X II out and see what I could get. I guessed at manual settings and focused on infinity. With the tilty screen and the limited zoom range, it wasn't hard to get the moon in the frame. When I looked at the results on my computer, I was surprised to find how well the red moon showed up, and there were even starts visible. I didn't do anything to the colors in camera RAW.

Patent: Anti static coating for RF lenses

As the EOS R also has a mechanical shutter the sensor hase some protection and the mirror is the only difference with a DSLR.
While dust can be treated quite well when you handle your gear carefully any additional help is welcome.
I own the R. The shutter is only closed when the camera is off. This coating could be beneficial for sure.

Jared Polin rates Canon as best 70-200

[...] Therefore having the zoom ring closer (as only Canon does) makes a lot of sense.

I am always confused to have the zoom ring close to the cam body because I want to stabilize my 70-200 4 and 400 5.6 close to the front of the lens. Shake of 1mm at a distance of 200mm makes only a quarter of the angular movement than 1mm at a distance of 50mm between both hands resulting in 4x better sharpness (maybe a factor 2 in reality due to other effects).

After some time what is the field report of EF100-400 Mk II?

Why do people apply "Mark" or "mk" to Canon lens names? No Canon EF lens ever made has had the word "Mark" included in the model name. Not a single one. The word "Mark" is used on the second and subsequent versions of the model names of Canon bodies.

There's also never been a Roman numeral "I" in any Canon lens or body name. Only "II", "III", and "IV".
“100-400mm” becomes a generic description once there is more than one model of a lens with that zoom range so people like to invent a descriptor for the original version to avoid confusion, hence the retro terminology “I” or Mk I. Though, we don’t do that with 7D and 5D series. Interestingly, we tend not to use “Mk” with the bodies but abbreviate those to 5DIII, 5DIV etc.

The Canon EOS M50 and Canon EOS R continued to sell well in December

Will ever exist a canon camera for lefthanders...
I'm a left hander, but have adapted some time in the past umpteen years to do some things right handed. Shooting (both rifle and camera, but left handed with pistol, batting baseball left handed or right handed, but can only throw left handed, kick a football with right foot, write, eat, and most other things left handed.

I seem to be a bit of a hybrid, I wonder if others are like me.

In any event, I don't think I could even use a camera left handed, I'm too set in my ways.

Quick look at throughput over last 14 years and predicting that a big change is coming

As ever, great points, Don. But regarding the quote above, I agree that the R was positioned roughly on the 6D2 level, but that to me is a hint of the tech problem: the 6D2 can AF with 6.5 frames per second. I worry that the R has 3 fps in servo because of throughput/processor limits. I strongly suspect Canon wanted to give the R 5 or so FPS, and this is where the limitations show.

Of course, I could be wrong, and they just "product placed" it where they wanted.
My suspicion is that you are right. To me, somewhere between 6 and 8 FPS seems right for that level of camera. Of course, in the mirrored cameras the AF sensor and the image sensor are two completely separate units and with multiple digics you can have one concentrating just on AF and not have it interfere with sensor issues. Now you have two processes sharing the same sensor and I can see how conflict would arise.

EVF vs OVF

Having seen the full size images, and the “harbor “ examples, it is not hard to tell that the Milvus lens has more hard edges around branches in the background. Other parts of the image might look better on the Milvus... Personally I find all of these lenses so good that separating them in terms of image quality is hard, and apart from the 35LII bokeh (which is even softer at f1.4) there are no significant advantages to any of them. The size, weight and IS are really good reasons for chosing the RF35.

EOS R and 100-400 II

Thanks, Mt S. That's what I've found too, that there will be some unexpected difficulty with focusing on objects that I would think it should not have any difficulty with. I I finally decided that part of that was due to the fact i was using the single point focus and when it got off my subject it was just so "lost in the woods" I would have to manually focus to get it back on track to the subject I was focusing on. I couldn't use the focus limiter because the subject was fairly close.

So, 3rd party RF lenses ARE possible after all...

Oh, I had not seen the patents.

Also, the fact that the control ring adapter exists makes me think that adding a control ring onto a lens is probably a pretty trivial thing. If it is truly just a straight through adapter, I would not be surprised to see third party RF lenses come out that essentially still communicate like an EF lens, but also have a control ring added in whatever manner the adapter does it, just built into the lens.
