Irix lenses now fully compatible with the Canon EOS R

"and even with focus peaking, the results are disappointing": Are you doing macro or close focus work and use Servo AF with AF "on"?
In that case maybe it is the problem I encountered with MF or one shot AF in macro / closeup at high apertures: After focusing I move a little bit and the distance between lens and object doesn't fit. With tripod you have "laboratory" conditions so "one shot MF" works well.

"One shot MF" is a source of unfocused images but after some trial and error I used the classical "move the camera along the optical axis"-technique and shutter was released when focus peaking was visible in the region of interest.

Just yesterday I put my M50 and the EF-M 32 @ f/1.4 in MF mode to find out, WHICH regions of the image will be sharp and it worked well. The object size was about 50 x 70mm so DOF was very thin.

One caveat of (Canons?) focus peaking is that it is only sensitive to vertical lines (in landscape orientation) - in my experience the quality of the focus peaking varies between different subjects.

Hopefully not too many trivial remarks - just my 2ct.

Can someone please point out the diference between LV shooting Modes 1,2 and disabled please?

after the exposure has completed .

Hmm, that would be true....
It looks like Mode 1 _and_ Mode 2 use Electronic First Curtain Shutter, which would reduce vibration from the initial opening of the shutter.

Holding the shutter shut after the shot (Mode 2) would only be useful to make the camera quieter.

This has a detailed explanation:

Teardown of the new Sony Supertele 400/2.8

Thanks for sharing and
So here is Roger's summary:
* I’ll call this one a draw, and a draw is a win for Sony. Canon has been doing this for a long, long time; this is, I think they’re 8th generation of 400mm f/2.8 lens. It’s Sony’s first and to have made a product equal to the gold standard of engineering is an amazing feat.
as this is the summary from uncle Rog this is almost like a knightly accolade for Sony. Kudos!

Canon to partner with GoPro in some capacity? [CR0]

There is a whole lot of software under the hood of a GoPro that runs on an Arm SOC.
https://gopro.com/help/articles/block/Open-Source-Software

Canon could certainly use some GoPro expertise to ditch their aging and proprietary Digic platform.

What kind of features could this actually enable? How about:
- Voice control
- Computational photography
- Better drivers and UI for 802.11 ac / Bluetooth wireless.
- Auto sync to Dropbox / Android / NAS etc
- Animated menus
- h.265 / AV1 video encoding
- Encryption
- Face detection / tagging
- Auto lens micro adjustment

Software ... IMHO, this is where Canon is falling the most behind. Some of these features would bridge 'Entry Level' cameras for cell phone shooters looking to upgrade, and that's a sizable chunk of the market.

Official 2 Card slots guy

I've only had cards fail on me in a non recoverable way after a sudden power loss in non-canon equipment during larger writes (such as while moving files off the card). Twice with SD cards where certain blocks became unreadable (one in a zoom recorder, one in a raspberry pi) and twice with CF cards in card readers (one card reader was glitchy, one time the whole computer list power while deleting files). The last example was the only card that was a total loss where the camera couldn't format it afterwards and the card reader didn't even detect a card was inserted.

Never have I experienced a card failure in a camera. Neither in any of my 5 DSLRs, kids 2 MILCs, GoPro nor any powershot. Roughly two terabytes have passed through the cards flawlessly.

I've used Kingston, SanDisk, Samsung and a few brands I can't remember.

I can't see why people are so afraid of not having dual cards. I'd rather have several smaller, in case one gets totalled while copying to a computer.

Canon R USB charging - does it work off power banks?

The big benefit comes for cable makers. I have a large number of cables in my USB cable drawer (2 drawers full, in fact)

USB A - USB A female (extension)
USB A - USB Mini-A
USB A - USB Micro A
USB A - USB B
USB A - USB Mini B
USB A - USB Micro B (USB-3)
USB A - USB - C
USB A - Apple & Amazon older tablets)
USB A - Apple lightning
USB A - Motorola, LG, Samsung, and a few other special device connectors)

I may have other combinations, but those are typically done with adapters. That does not count specialty cables, or extra long ones.

I still have some cameras (Olympus, Fujii, and even a old Sony Camcorder that uses the rare USB cable types.

I should start a cable museum, when I add in the old SCSI types, the old ribbon cable types from PC's, the old audio cables for CD drives and so on.

USB-C cabling is worse than the version before, if your country has access to amazon, have a look at

to see which cables aren't going to destroy your device while charging (that's not a hyperbole!).

DPReview: Canon EOS R vs Nikon Z 6 vs Sony a7 III, which is best?

Ha HA HA . Again, you just make up whatever baloney you want to support your (non)argument. It is often better to actually read what someone writes rather than create your own interpretation. I keep making that point and you keep ignoring it. Why, oh why, does this still surprise me!

Good luck to you and Happy New Year.
Happy New Year to you to, dak723!

Patent: 500mm and 600mm diffractive optic lenses

I think the new lenses will be optimized for RF (more contacts) but actually they NEED to be EF, just for market. It's easy to convert EF to RF but no viceversa. Since we have not R sport camera(s), the easy solution for long backfocus lenses is to make EF mount.
Another solution could be two version of the same lens....

Patent: Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS & RF 24-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM

Ouch - this makes my decision more complicated - do I go with the 28-70 f2, or the image-stabilized 24-70..
I'm still leaning towards the 28-70, just due to the enhanced optics and bokeh that I'll get from this lens. At the same time, I know the lens will be much heavier, and I wonder if the IS becomes a necessary ingredient here?
For anyone who has the current 24-70 (without IS), how do you find it? Do you find that IS would make things better?

I would tend think a lighter lens would be more in need of IS... based on my firearms experience. I have the current 24-70mm f/2.8L II and have not had a problem probably due to the shorter focal length. I won't be buying a 24-70 IS if it gets released. I'm happy with what I have. If I had an R body the non stabilized 28-70 would probably be my first lens purchase. However, I am more likely to get a 5D Mark V if one is released.

Introducing Loupedeck+, the Next Evolution of Custom Photo Editing Console, Loupedeck

I can agree with Mt Spokane that cropping doesn't really work well with it.
For everything else in Lightroom I've found it very good and very usable. I would have had sharpness as a default switch (it is by default set to one of the controls but not named as such). I've been quite impressed by it.
Since launch they've extended it to use it with Photoshop / Elements and other software. This might be good marketing , extending its use but honestly I think its really for Lightroom only. Everything else is too complicated.
You can't throw away the mouse but Loupedeck makes alot of tasks quicker (like exporting) and cuts down on keyboard shortcuts.
I really like it. I'd give it a 9/10 - it exceeded my expectations.

Ended: Your favourite new lens from Canon in 2018

To be fair, there should be "None" option to show that none of the released lenses is something we could use or want to buy which is exactly the case for me considering that RF will not be useful for me for very long time, big whites are not something I would even consider (especially shiny new ones) and those new 70-200 simply don't bring anything new to owners of excellent 2.8 IS Mk. II.

But... that's not the point of the poll. It's just to see what people think was the best lens released this year. Not what out buying intentions are, or whether we're satisfied with their design choices or whatever.

I doubt I'll buy any of these lenses but I can pick my favourite nonetheless

Patent: Canon RF 90mm f/2.8L IS Macro & RF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro

True, these two lenses shown in patents will be bread and butter macros for Canon just like the EF 100mm f/2.8 duo have been. For photographing butterflies having that 180mm macro even if its f3.5 or f4 combined with EOS-R sized body(just add IBIS to make lens compact without IS) would be a good combo for butterflying. Pretty sure at this point we won't see replacement to Canon's current EF 180mm L lens.

I have been using my P/S camera lately for “microscope mode” with auto focus stacking it works surprisingly well, but it is no substitute for the 100L. If the new version is even better than the old one, then it will be a fantastic lens.
