Thank you for siding with corporate overlords and making the gap between rich and poor greater. Canon only has 10s of billions of dollars. They dont have the resources to give a lil back software wise to their loyal customers....

Thanks, Robin Hood, for bravely standing shoulder to shoulder with the poor against a camera company while holding your 5DIV.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I guess I missed the tens of thousand of members of the proletariat marching through the streets carrying their 5DIVs and demanding free software to feed their starving children.
I have been seeing an increasing number of Sony shooters every day. Throw your customers a bone once in awhile. Just because you are number 1 doesnt mean there is a good connect between consumer and marketing/CEOs. the demand for video and hybrid shooting is increasing. The least canon can do is offer extra convenience with a few extra settings or options. Maybe a flip screen for the next set of pro cameras. I am a person with a 5d iv and a c100 (plus more cameras) that makes a living from photography and videography.

Chargers, counterfeit vs genuine. ::)

Whoa, that's quite a difference.

I follow a couple of YouTube channels where they take apart cheap electronic goods bought over the Internet and it's made me realise just how valuable the regulations we have (and the enforcement of them) is - I like not having to worry whether stuff I buy from a shop is unsafe.

Buying over the Internet, I've learnt to place a premium on quality and also learnt to be wary of buying branded goods through third parties. The great deals aren't worth the few quid I save over buying products from a reputable manufacturer (often direct) once I've factored in the occasional duff purchases.

Unfortunately it's a recent lesson - the new tailored rubber car mats that saved me £20 are now in their third week of stinking the spare room out while the half price windscreen wipers had their too-brittle end caps broken when I knocked them de-icing the windscreen.

All you people that paid the premium for the genuine stuff for a guarantee of no hassle or buying twice - well done, you smug bastards :-)

More About the "Major Mirrorless Presentation", It's The EOS M50

Unfortunately is close to £850-£900 in the UK, body only. I think that is over priced, Add £50 and you can buy a new FF 6D body :) Yes I know it's not as small, but I think it just gives some perspective.

Wow, so expensive in UK. You should move to Canada :)

For GBP £575 (Canadian $1,000, USD $800) right now you get M5 body, EF adapter, and 2 batteries. That's brand new, at a Canon authorized retailer.

And you can add 18-45 for just CAD $150 more.

UPDATE: Next From Sigma? 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM Art

NancyP said:
Astro-landscape photographers may be interested.

Yep, but Sigma -- for all it's butt-kicking on resolution -- has had limited success fighting coma.

I don't shoot astro, but it would appear from the posters here that coma performance is as vital as resolution with an astro lens.

And this has not been the strong suit of the wide/fast Art lenses:

The Coming EF-M Prime to be 50mm Equivalent for APS-C EOS M [CR2]

So I recommend looking to Fuji for a moment for a slice of alternate reality on what Canon might have done. In the absence of an FF platform behind it, what did Fuji do? They went all-in on crop and put out a boatload of fast primes. EF-S/EF-M body owners would looooooove even a small slice of purpose-built-for-crop primes like that.

yes, look at stupid Fuji. Their decisions to
1. NOT offer FF mirrorless
2. offer APS-C stuff priced pretty much like Canon FF gear
3. offer a wide range of more or less fast and exotic prime lenses which are all way too big and way too expensive ...
4. use all retro design on it with mono-functional control points instead of a compelling "digital" user interface

are the very reasons WHY Fuji is and will forever be stuck at less than 3% market share. Good on them. Stupid Canon is extremely fortunate that their competition - namely Fuji - is acting even more stupidly.

How do you end up with a little money selling a many different crop primes at boutique prices? Answer: It's easy if you start out with a lot of money.

OK I forgot about this thread, and the promise I made. Anyway I am in the studio Tuesday and Wednesday, if takesome1, slclick, Mikehit, Eldar, and neuroanatomist (does that cover it?) want to send me a file to print up to 20" x 30" I'll get it done as promised.

I do not envy you the headache you'll have when the raw files finish copying. But for now, rest well and dream of iPhones and JPEGs.

Hey there Dilbert, a very warm welcome back. Hope you are well and if you'd like a print too just send me a file and your address.

Another Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS III Mention [CR2]

These are non-rebate/non-sale prices from Amazon.com:

Canon - $1950
Nikon - $2590
Sony - $2600

There's the rub. In those prices above, Canon is leaving a lot of money on the table. The upcharge to market parity at $2500 would easily underwrite the costs to develop a new lens. That's why we get these 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 lenses get updated so often: they are vital professional tools in a staple focal length range, and folks pay very good money for them.

- A

Just don't forget the effect of volume on profit margins. Raising the price doesn't always result in higher profits. We have no idea what the per unit profits are of each of these manufacturer's lenses are. The fact that these "get updated so often" (your words) tells me Canon probably has it right.

There's also sale prices. Canon aggressively marks down those prices at sale events.

I upgraded mine about 4 or so years ago when it was on sale for about 15%+ lower than it's priced on Amazon today. And during Black Friday/Boxing Day/Best in Glass event and other sales, it's recently been as low as around USD$1,650 from an authorized retail dealer (and obviously less than that for grey market).

Canon Fiscal Year End 2017, It Was a Good Year

Tugela said:
When talking about the competition you have to bear in mind that the market breaks out into subsectors that are not captured in the overall numbers. Sony (and lately Nikon) claim to be leading or doing very well in the FF subsector. Canon produces a lot of entry level ILCs, whereas other companies do not, instead they tend to sell a combination of ILCs and fixed lens to the purchasing group. Sony does not have an entry level product at all. That creates an artificial sense of where Canon really is at in the premium ILC subsector since their numbers are heavily skewed by low margin products that their primary competitors don't care about. Competition for Canon in the low margin consumer product area instead comes from different competitors, such as Panasonic and Fuji.

Because Canon markets products to all subsectors while their competitors focus on specific subsectors, Canon can lead the overall market share even while being beaten in the subsectors. They are just being beaten by different companies in different places. Which is why it is necessary to be cautious in reading too much into the overall percentages.

If you look at only FF cameras I suspect that you will see market trends that are very different.

We now have the definitive answer, and it's no surprise...you are wrong. As usual.

As you should know (but I've learned never to assume you are aware of basic facts), Canon has been #1 in global ILC sales for 14 years and counting.

You claim that if you look at only at FF cameras, the market trend will be very different because, "Sony (and lately Nikon) claim to be leading or doing very well." But the reality is that for FF ILCs in the US, Canon was #1 in 2017. Just like they were in the broader global ILC market.

<p><!--more--></p>
<p>Film fans can now take advantage of in-body stabilized blur-free 4K movies while the new built-in flash ensures E-PL9 users are always ready for adding a splash of extra light. Anyone who can’t wait to share their new masterpieces online can take advantage of the new combined Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity to smartphones.</p>
<p>Due for delivery in mid-March, the Olympus PEN E-PL9 will be available in white, black or brown as body only or in a kit with lens (see below for choices and pricing).</p>
<p><strong>It’s all about expression</strong></p>
<p>The increase in creative options a camera brings too often comes with a scary menu system to match. Seeking to break down those barriers, the Olympus PEN E-PL9 lets you start your journey of photographic experimentation gradually via touch screen selection of creative programmes before moving on to more traditional settings. Select AUTO mode to let the camera identify many photographic situations from faces to groups and even movement and choose the best setting for you in the blink of an eye. Feel the need to adjust – fear not, a touch screen control with sliders allows you to adjust brightness, colour and contrast amongst other common settings. Tilt the screen down for a superior quality selfie and you can even touch select e-Portrait to smooth skin tones in camera. All of that comes in a very small and lightweight camera body that gives away both a traditional and modern feel.</p>
<p><strong>Art not just for art’s sake</strong></p>
<p>Olympus pioneered Art Filters way back and touching the screen brings them to life in a new way, making comparing the effects live on screen easier than ever. Besides Bleach Bypass, Instant Film is also new to the list of now 16 Art Filters – a nostalgic nod to the exaggerated colours of the early instant cameras. Use in daylight and the effects are subtle. Use at night on people with flash and a potentially dull shot is transformed: darker areas becomes green and skin is given a warm glow, an image is created that has a modern touch with a nostalgic feel.</p>
<p>Building on this, Olympus has made access to scene modes available through the touch screen too. Simply double tap the image that most closely matches what you see in your mind’s eye and the camera chooses the appropriate settings. The innovative access to simpler creative control is the new Advanced Photo (AP) mode. Olympus pioneered techniques like Live Composite used to be buried deep in the camera menus, often lying undiscovered. Want to take a photo of your friend creating a light painting in front of a lit up building at night? Used to be almost impossible, now tap the icon in AP mode, put the E-PL9 on a solid surface and off you go. Explore the delights of multiple exposure, HDR, sweep panorama, even focus bracketing – a technique that is a boon for close ups.</p>
<p><strong>A learning process</strong></p>
<p>A new set of easy access video “How To” guides hosted on the free OI.Share app, that handles the wireless transfer of images from camera to phone, provide useful tips for operating the E-PL9. Speaking of image transfer: the E-PL9 combines Bluetooth LE with Wi-Fi to ensure that the camera is always connected with your smartphone even when “asleep”. Want to see and import some images you just shot but the camera is back in your bag? No problem. Open the app and wake up the camera without needing to get it out and switch it on.</p>
<p><strong>Quality through technology</strong></p>
<p>What else does the E-PL9 have up its sleeve to help your photographs stand out from the crowd? Another Olympus pioneered innovation is in-body Image Stabilization (IS). Reducing blurry shots in low light, this system is married to the fast TruePic VIII image processor from the acclaimed Olympus camera flagship OM-D E-M1 Mark II which allows the camera to choose higher shutter speeds* further improving the chances of sharp results in challenging conditions.</p>
<p><strong>Learning to love lenses</strong></p>
<p>A system camera lives and dies by the lenses available to suit an ever expanding range of subjects. Many current Olympus PEN users head straight for the M.Zuiko Digital 45mm F1.8 portrait lens. Why? If you come from taking portraits on phones or compact camera, the lenses are often a wider angle to be more flexible. Sadly for the human face, wide angles tend to distort features. A classic portrait lens like the 45mm F1.8, slightly flattens the perspective which is more flattering. The wider aperture also delivers a natural looking blurred background (bokeh). While phones increasingly mimic this effect, the right lens sets an image apart. One area where a system camera really excels is getting in close: macro photography. Try our “all-day” go-to macro lens M.Zuiko Digital ED 30mm F3.5 Macro with the E-PL9. For capturing details in jewellery, food, material or flowers it opens a whole new world.</p>
<p>On top of the currently more than 20 Olympus M.Zuiko lenses it is possible to use hundreds of legacy lenses via various adapters.</p>

Review: Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD by TDP

HTML:
The-Digital-Picture has completed their review of the Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD. At just $799, this is a very affordable 100-400mm option.</p>
<p><strong>From The-Digital-Picture:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p>The Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens adds a very interesting choice to the mid-to-long telephoto zoom lens options list. This lens (and its Sigma counterpart) delivers image quality close to that of the major camera brands’ own offerings at a substantially lower price point. And, at a substantially lower, more-easily-portable weight.</p>
<p>This lens does not forgo the expected quality features, including vibration compensation, fast USD autofocus and moisture-resistant construction. It looks great and the smooth design feels great in the hand. The focal length range being an extremely useful one brings great value into the equation. <a href="https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Tamron-100-400mm-f-4.5-6.3-Di-VC-USD-Lens.aspx">Read the full review</a></p></blockquote>

Zack Arias Talks Unsplash, and Some Serious Issues With the Site

Mikehit said:
...Getty is different - they are stock site which Upsplash are not.

Yes, they are. iStock by Getty and Unsplash are both stock photo sites. The only difference is that iStock charges for use of the photos and pays the contributors. Unsplash says their stock photos are "gifted" by the photographers.

Frankly, I'm tired of this conversation. Craig (CR Guy), Zach Arias, Carolyn Wright and I have all explained the risks of uploading images to Unsplash without understanding the law regarding model releases. Unslpash has written a very clever user agreement that leaves the photographer with all the liability. If people refuse to accept the facts, there is nothing more we can do.

I do know quite a few good attorneys, so when you get yourself sued, I will be happy to give you a referral.

Patent: Stacked, Curved and Other Sensor Patents

Canon does something like 2000+ patents a year, or ~5+ a day. Most are not camera / lens patents, but even 1 a day is a huge amount.

A few have been implemented even before we see the publication, some will be implemented in the future, and the other 99+% will never be implemented, but may be a basis for a future patent that is implemented.

Canon patented a mirrorless FF to EF adapter some time ago. We never spotted a patent for the mirrorless mount, it may be on hold waiting for a announcement, and the adaptor patent accidentally slipped thru.

Is it possible the improvements correlate to new sensor technology that they will need to be even better? It seems that there are a lot of new patents for new sensors that I hope are considerably better and will that then require improvements in lenses?

Sigma 24-105 f/4 Art looked at by Uncle Rog + OLAF

Indeed, it didn't sell well when it was widely-available, and of course once production slowed down (it never fully stopped, as is often incorrectly reported) it sold even less, but it's done 'okay'. Kind of like Canon's own 35mm f/2 IS, sales of Sigma's 24-105 have stayed consistent, when usually you only see sales drop the further from release you get; this means that, relatively speaking, sales of Sigma's 24-105 have picked up, compared to where they would be if it had stayed on a more common sales trajectory. (Again, same as the Canon 35.)
It's hard to attribute the cause to anything, though if I had to guess, I'd say the presence and persistence of 'white box' Canon 24-105s probably harmed the Sigma's sales most of all.

As for the quality, I'm surprised it registered so poorly at f/4, and the jump at f/5.6. I've used it a couple of times (different copies each time) and I found it very consistent across the frame—not as much as Tamrons are consistent, but more consistent edge-to-edge than Canon's—at f/4, and though smaller apertures were a clear improvement, it wasn't that much of a jump as this testing indicates.

Could just be the subject matter in question or maybe the couple of copies I got were unusually good ones, but at least from my personal experience, this testing undersells the quality at f/4 and overstates the improvement at f/5.6.

Either way, it's certainly a much nicer lens than the Canon version(s), and if only it had any weather sealing, I probably would have bought one to keep myself; as it is I'll happily rent or borrow one but oof, it is a touch hard to justify owning when you live in ''sunny'' England and the rain is only every seconds away...

Should i get the 5D IV or wait for the 6D II ?

iamjhil said:
has anyone tried these out... I am real close to picking up the 5D IV, but that Digital image stabilization and swivel screen keep me rethinking...

I was in the same position a few months ago. I had a 7D mark i and wanted to move up to FF. After reading all the reviews, I couldn't really make up my mind.

I am an amateur like to take photo with birds. I had a chance to play with the two cameras one afternoon, side-by-side with various lenses available to attach to them. Both cameras are really good, AF very fast, FPS is almost the same and both take excellent photos. They are very similar in functionality but of course differences are there and thus their prices. I decided on 6Dii.

The coverage of the AF points is the major difference I found – 6Dii is really tight through the OVF. If it bothers you, go for 5Div. Higher MP is of course the advantage of 5Div; and I missed a few things such as the joystick but the 6Dii has the wheel and I adapted to it quite quickly. 6Dii single card slot doesn’t bother me but the articulated screen is a major plus. People are complaining about the DR but so far I don’t have much issue with it. I don’t take video much so I can’t say too much about it.

I am very happy with my purchase and am still learning to use all the functions; I only took a couple thousand pics so far because of the cold winter; didn’t go out too often.

Patent: The Mirror Box Isn't Dead Yet

@a - that is a perfect analogy.

Electric vehicles are no doubt the future, but adoption is slow for many reasons, because they're still relatively expensive and are still quite inferior in some use cases.

We can think of hybrids as live view and technology like dual pixel as bridge technology that benefit both.

Even though electric cars may be the only vehicles eventually, for a very long time, perhaps our entire lifetimes, there will still be internal combustion automobiles.

Where the analogy breaks down a little is that oil is not a renewable resource (largely - one could make a pitch for oil alternatives like ethanol), and that drives the eventual demise of cars that need oil. If we could just synthesize oil cheaply, electric cars would need a whole lot more to become our future.

Fortunately for wildlife enthusiasts, this world is not going to run out of mirror and prism making materials any time soon :D
