77D won't fire external flash in live view

Was going to suggest using the PC sync port, but of course, the 77D lacks one. Depending on how important getting this to work is to you, it may be that a modified Canon OC-E3 could be used to fire the remote trigger (via an added aux jack). There's a guy who will modify off camera cords (and lots of other things as well):

But, sounds like it's not worth the effort.

"Dead view," I like it. ;)

7D MK II adjustments

unfocused said:
You can send it to CPS for a clean and check, but that is no guarantee the shutter won't die the next week. They are going to check the current functions on the camera and clean the sensor, but they won't be able to predict when the shutter will die. Likely that the 200,000 figure is a conservative estimate, but you never know.

You can choose to have the shutter replaced before it fails, or you can wait until it fails. Decision depends on your personal needs, how long you intend to keep the camera and how lucky you feel.

That is true. Statistically speaking, about %36 survive past 200K actuation and %13 past 400K. Optimistically these are good numbers, but pessimistically, about %64 will die premature, and the odds that it dies premature is about twice as much towards the end of the life cycle. Conclusion: better get it checked.

Interview with SOny Execs about A7R3

Mikehit said:
An interesting interview on Image Resource with Sony Execs about the A7R3. Not so much the camera itself but the main design drivers.

Before now, we didn’t have so many professional or photo enthusiast customers in our user base, therefore, the voice we can get is limited. But now with more and more customers including professionals, we are getting more information, and that helps us to make more decision to set our goals.

So it looks like they are admitting their main impulse was 'cram as much technology as possible' endless [sic] about 'can we design a usable camera'.

If you want to ignore the written words and make up your own, sure that’s what they said.

In reality, they’re saying the growing user base is helping them refine their products.

Thinking of downgrading / advice

It is my opinion that the way you think it, you will downgrade without saving money. Unless you are focal length limited better stay as you are. 5D3 is a nice camera. Just make sure you expose to the right.

EDIT: I saw you have a zoom lens up to 600mm. This will behave much better with the full frame 5D3. I do not believe it can be fully utilized with an APS-C camera. You will lose IQ. So in my opinion you are not focal length limited.

New 7D Mark II - Difficulty with Sharp Photos

You are fortunate to have discovered the problem within the return period and get a refund. I was not as lucky.

After sending my 7DII back to Canon CPS in New York twice, with and without the 100-400 mark II lens, the focus issues were never solved. After two long trips to Southern Africa with proof of focus issues, all Canon could say was they made "electronic adjustments". Which means to me, they don't know or more likely would not admit the system was faulty. I sold the body on eBay....

At least I had my trusty 5D3 with 1.4 TC and said 100-400 to save my second trip with high keeper rates.

While I have bought several lenses and two bodies (6D and 5D3) refurbed with mostly good success (had to send 70-200 2.8 back with focus issues) i wonder if yours will be checked and then resold again as a refurb to some unsuspecting buyer!

Off Brand: Panasonic LUMIX G9 - The Ultimate Photo Shooting Camera

Now if only Panasonic would sell their 400f5.6 (equivalent) lens for $1200, it might be worth looking at.

Ok, it’s got IS, I’ll give them $1400, but it’s pretty much guaranteed that the $3,000 M4/3 lens has worse IQ than the 25 year old, $1,150 (on sale now) Canon 400f5.6.

The lens has worse IQ or the lens + camera? My guess is that because of the size of the optics and the more modern production techniques (including materials) the Panasonic will have better IQ

TDP: EOS 6D Mark II Image Quality and analysis

FWIW, I ended up getting a used (20,000 exposures) 5DsR for only a little more than a new 6DII. Very happy with the decision. Dramatically better camera than the 6D (and my 5DII). Love the shutter. Quieter than the quiet mode of my 6D and faster. Dynamic range is about the same as my 6D. Focusing is waaay better. Main gripe is the very poor conversion of mRaw files by Lightroom. And a flippy screen would be nice.
Keeping my 6D is backup camera for events.

100-400 L II in combination with EOS M5 - Experiences

Thank you Talys, PCM-madison and ahsanford so far.

I already suspected that the lens will be too front heavy on the M5.
As I will often be aboard a cruise ship a long lens for landscape (espacially icebergs) can be of good value. Then the APS-C cropfactor will help.

On the onshore trips I will then have the M5 (22 [or the 11-22] and 40 pancake) and the 5DMarkII (with 100-400 attached) with me. Don't want to bring too much gear when sitting on the Zodiac for the shoreleave.

regards
Frank

So long as you have the 5D2 with you, feel free to blast away with the M5. You can always switch the 100-400 to the 5D2 if your wrist cries out in pain. :D

It’s still mind boggling that people can go their entire lives trying to support large lenses with the grip on the camera body when it was perfectly logical from the first moment that I touched a 400mm lens that you would never even try to hold the weight of the lens with the camera body.

Small bodies are ergonomically superior when used with large lenses.
At 400mm the lens is the center of balance no matter what body you use. Using a large camera body just makes the entire system less maneuverable, it’s just dead weight no matter how you hold it.

If the M5 doesn’t focus quickly that might be reason enough to leave it behind, but as far as I’m concerned an SL2 would be far preferable to the 5D2. The center point on my 1100D tracks birds in flight with a 400f5.6 well enough (though when I did have a 5D2 it did focus noticeably faster, and the larger viewfinder is nice).
The ultimate wildlife camera would be a 5DS crammed into the SL2 body.

The next problem is that the 5D2 has really low pixel density, if you’re not going to get close enough to fill a 35mm frame then the M5 would get better pictures.

BR Optics

I too have been surprised that it hasn't been seen on another lens since. Maybe the cost really is an issue - I think almost every review of the 35 L II said the same sort of thing: "the best AF 35mm lens money can buy but the old one is so good that it's hard to justify spending so much..."

I did get one and love it! 35mm is my preferred focal length for so many different types of photography.

One thing that did surprise me is that when you examine the lens under light and tilt it you can see the blue element near the front, it lost looks like a blue coloured haze on an element really- it's curious to me that that doesn't have some negative impact on the colours going through and suggests it really is something unusual and special and not just marketing hype.

Amazing....Wonderful....Beautiful!!!

Just breathtaking. I was guessing some sort of macro lens...what kind of housing did you use? Is there a way to park a camera on a tripod type thing, to keep still on the shots?

I was afraid that eel might try to eat the camera (or cameraman) as close as you were to it....

cayenne

Hi Cayenne,
I was using a 100mm macro lens the F2.8L I was also using wet diopter which is something you can flip over the lens for the really small stuff. This was when I was using a ikelite housing, but I now use a Nauticam housing with my 1dx2.

I used a tripod in these shots. It has to be sandy or rubble because I won't put it on the coral. Thats where these creature live anyway so it works out.

Another Mention of a Canon Non-L Telephoto Zoom [CR2]

Maybe there is no mush but there are also no legs. Presumably the bird was so close it more than filled the frame, which is hardly testing a lens (there are no size or exif data on Flickr to give the information). Even the Tamron 18-400mm would appear tack sharp if the bird was really that close. So, it would be useful to know how far the bird was away so we could judge.

As a matter of interest, I have read that the Nikon 200-500mm is optimised for closer distances, where it is sharper than the Tamron, but the Tamron is sharper for longer distances.

The Canon 85mm f/1.4L IS USM Has Started Shipping

My card was charged this morning by Adorama in the amount of the pre-order for the 85mm lens, so I gave them a call. They confirmed that my lens was indeed at the warehouse and shipping out today. That puts the lens in my hands by next Tuesday or Wednesday.

I currently own the Sigma 85mm Art lens and didn't manage to sell it before the new Canon was released, so I plan to test these lenses head-to-head. I have 2 portrait sessions next week and one of them is with a friend, so I think I should be able to try out a lot of stuff.

I'll be testing chromatic aberration, flare, sharpness, and image rendering from 1.4-2.0. Nothing too scientific, but should be a fun time.

Even if I confirm the Canon isn't as sharp and has worse CA, I still plan to sell the Sigma...unless the new Canon really sucks - which I don't see being the case. LOL
