My 6D MkII Photos - Wildlife! [UPDATE: ISO 12800 Songbird BIFs added]

With regards to noise, I'm not really willing to go outside of DPP/Lightroom for my hobby shoots, and I don't want to have to deal with TIFFs because of the file sizes. I have fiddled plenty with those controls, and while there are certain types of photos that convert well (ones that naturally hide noise), most, I think, are terrible once ISOs get into 4 digits. If you have a suggestion, I'd be happy to hear.

DxO Optics Pro is a favourite here.

Profoto A1 speedlight leaked.

There are quite a few strobes that integrate seamlessly with the Canon system. For example I have the Indra 500 which has all of the features of the Canon speed light and the extra power. I just can't imagine spending all that money on a speedlight, especially if most wedding photographers use 2-3 speedlights. I often have two off camera flashes, and on camera flash, and a strobe all going on in different areas of a wedding reception. If that were a profoto system it would be A LOT of money.

Canon MT-26EX-RT

Sabaki said:
Hey everyone

Can anyone with the MT24 please advise if that unit could take diffusers without Frankensteining the unit?

Any chance that the MT26 offers a notable step forward with the now included diffusers?

I found some cheap MT24 ones on eBay - they've not fallen off in a couple of year's use - my previous ones were the translucent tops from a couple of slide boxes and a bit of tape...

Any rumors on a new Canon 50mm 1.4?

Yes, Puh lease Hurry The F Up!

I'm tired of walking around for hrs with a 1dx2 looking like an amateur with a point n shoot live view shooting only as my sigma cant viewfinder focus right, only do it for the superior optics over any canon 50 grrr

Cant wait for a new 50 :D as long as its as good or better than the sigma art

An "I Shoot Raw" t-shirt and a couple of sessions with an image coach should help you get over the feelings of "looking like an amateur" complex. No lens can fix that. ::) ::) ::)

i wouldnt want to give Jared any of my money :D

well yes i guess its not important how amateur we aesthetically look live view shooting, its more the frustration of trying to get fast moving candids with live view touch focusing, that amateur slow responsive method, even tho dpaf is sweet on it, i miss some good ole fashioned quicker viewfinder ability

My Not Nearly Complete, But Rather Entertaining, Circular Polarizer Filter Article by Roger Cicala

Re: My Not Nearly Complete, But Rather Entertaining, Circular Polarizer Filter Article by Roger Cica

Too bad they didn't test for the "Circular" in CPL. We now know that all filters do a good job selecting only one polarity at the input. But it would also be interesting to see how much residual linear polarization the output has. The output of a CPL should be circular polarized but not linearly polarized.
So they should put a linear polarizing filter behind the tested CPL and see if there is any change in total transmission between different orientations of the linear polarizer.

Canon Launches The XF405, XF400 and VIXIA GX10

Hello, I posted my video interview featuring the XF400/XF405 at the Canon IBC booth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fRmOYnGk8U

It seems as far as I understand:
- There is no way to record HDR HLG mode, the Wide DR mode hasn't got to do with that.
- If you buy in Europe you may be stuck with 4K50 and 4K25 there may not be a way to change the system frequency to NTSC 4K60 and 4K30. I tried finding system frequency switch in settings menu and I couldn't find it and some of the Canon reps at the booth also couldn't find it.
- Both 4K50 and 4K25 use the same 150mbit/s bitrate. I hope that the quality at 4K50 is great with their H264 encoding performance. I am hoping that when they upgrade the firmware to add their XF-AVC wrapper support that they may perhaps also be able to offer an H265 codec option at half the bitrate for the same quality.

Tamron Announces the Development of the 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD

3: There are couple of good tripod/monopod heads from Manfrotto and other manufacturers that provide compatibility with Arca swiss style QR plates. Biggest benefit of these heads that it comes with a arca swiss plate which I can use it with flash bracket(Kirk) and macro rails(kirk) without having to spend another 200-300$ on plates for my camera and lenses.

GAH. Let's not go there on Manfrotto Arca heads. I have, I think, the only Xpro arca compatable ballhead. It's one of the best ballheads ever! Except it's the most incompatible ballhead ever-- 75% of the arca plates that I own don't work, because the dovetail angle is a little different. And you MUST topload, because the base has a safety pin, the prevents you from putting a safety stop on the front and sliding it out the back.

I finally got pissed off with it, took the super-expensive Manfrotto plate off the top, and plunked on a cheap Chinese one so that I could actually use the plates I want.

BTW, if they are going to have the lens out this year, they should just say, "we're going to release it November 15". Really, any later, and they're going to miss the Christmas rush, because retailers need to place in their orders by about then. And, in North America, Black Friday is a huge part of the Christmas shopping.
Thanks for letting me know about the interoperability headaches of Manfrotto heads, guess I will just get a Kirk ball head (which means spending quite a bit for lens plates and body plate). In general it seems like arca swiss is more a guideline rather than a standard when it comes to Quick release systems.

Arca-swiss plates all have dovetails on opposing sides of the plate, and the ability to put optional safety screws on either or both ends that can prevent your camera from sliding off accidentally.

Most people who use arca plates don't put safety screws on both ends on most setups, because they like giving a half-twist, and just letting the camera side out -- usually back towards them. If you put screws on both ends, you have to turn that knob forever before you can remove it from the top.

But a lot of people (me included) prefer top-loading, drop-in systems. There isn't an efficiency reason to this; it's just a preference. So Manfrotto made theirs top-loading by making one of the dovetail sides retractable. You can either twist the knob to tighten/retract it, or press a button to retract it. When you let go, the dovetail springs back into place, and then you can drop the camera in.

Sounds great, right?

Well, two things. First, for whatever reason, the angles are very slightly sharper than most arca plates. That means that a lot of plates will work, but some won't. It sucks if the plate you want to use, doesn't.

Second, the Manfrotto plate doesn't use the safety stops on the ends system, theoretically, because it's a top loading system, and they can make the plate a little smaller that way. But it's still not good for your camera to fall off the tripod, so instead, they have a built-in safety pin, built in to the head. It sticks out, and catches the safety plate if it's sliding forwards or back.

Sounds lovely, except, now, you can't remove it by sliding the camera back towards you anymore. On a light lens, who cares; you can just use the release latch, and lift the camera up. But on a heavy lens, it's just easier to slide it back towards you than to lift it up.

Now, of course, you can say, why would anyone want to use a heavy lens on a ballhead... but it happens, for whatever reason, and it's definitely inelegant in that situation.

But fortunately, it has a nut in the middle, so you can replace the top plate with a more standard one. The XPRO ball itself is excellent; it's much smoother than most, because it's much larger (and heavier), and it has additional friction controls. Still, if you're going to do this easy modification, don't bother with the Arca version, because the regular version of the same head is cheaper or is bundled for cheaper.

i have a 1 yr young ED 50/1.4 in my closet. dont think i have taken more than 50 shots with it yet. will not buy any other 50 prime any time soon. f/1.4 or 1.0 or whatever and IS or not. "art" or not. south or north of 1k ... no, thanks.

waiting for delivery of my personal copy of canon EF-M 85/2.4 IS STM. :-)

The 50mm f/1.4 is more useful on a crop-sensor camera. It functions a lot like an 85mm on FF (80mm equivalent, after all), and that's how I use mine. If/when I buy a FF camera, I will probably use it as rarely as you do. Probably the 100mm macro I already have will take that place for a while, a long with its other uses.

True, most of my use of the 50 1.8 STM has been on my M6 (via adapter) rather than on my 5D. Since there's no current EF-M equivalent, it's really the only compact way I know of to get a portrait-friendly FOV with that camera.

I have used the 50 (1.2 version) on the 5D as well, but lately I've been favoring more the 35mm FOV for wide shots - plus, I find the 35 1.4 II to be a FAR better lens than the 50 1.2 (sorry 50L fans). An improved 50mm lens from Canon is quite high on my wishlist (although if the new 85 1.4 is decent enough, the 35/85 1.4 combo may be more favored by me).

Interesting. Apparently Sony is now holding their sensor technologies for themselves. And it's awesome Nikon was able to find a different source and do not depend on a competitor.

Nijkon FF mirrorless - goodbye F-mount!

mjg79 said:
9VIII said:
Nikon adopting a new mount is important because the F-Mount was always too small.
e.g. Nikon can't use an 85f1.2 lens.

Unfortunately there's a chance they're just going to keep things the same on any new mount, but we can hope it gets bigger.
Using a bigger mount would also allow potential for future bodies with larger than 35mm sensors.

The EF mount can already go up to 42mm so theoretically Canon could jump straight to competing with Pentax 645z and Fuji GFX.

Does anyone know why Sony use such a small mount for their FE mount? I understand it was the NEX E mount but why didn't they just make a whole new mount, it's hardly like E mount had a loyal fanbase stretching back decades.

I just wish Canon would continue to make more use of their large mount - I think they should restart making 50mm 1.0 lenses - I know it was flawed but it makes such a statement and is one of those things that other manufacturers can't or won't attempt.
Back in the days of film and low-ISO digital cameras, big, wide, light-bucket lenses were desirable, even if they were optically-flawed compared to modern lenses.

These days, high-ISO performance has overtaken the ability to design high-performing f/1.0 lenses, so f/1.4+ will do, and give higher-quality images.

I doubt that even today, a 50mm f/1.0 lens would be optically stellar - at least at any reasonable price.

I doubt that sufficient market exists for such a lens.

(I'd still drool over one and would love to try one out, though!)

Everyone Else Has One, Why Not us? Tamron to Announce 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD

AlanF said:
Depends on what format you are shooting, Tamron 150-600 seems to work better on FF cameras. Also from what I have been seeing with Nikon shooters here most prefer to buy Nikon lenses as they hold their value better than Tamron/Sigma lenses which you can buy for nearly half the price of new lens on used market.

I use my 150-600mm on a 5DSR, which has the same pixel size as APS-C, and its relative performance to my Canon lenses is the same as on my 5DIV - and I nearly always severely crop.

The financial investment argument breaks down if you are comparing a cheap easy to sell used lens with a far more expensive Canon or Nikon. If you lose half the price of a Sigma or Tamron 150-600mm, you lose about $400, and they are easy to sell. Buy a big white, and you lose 3-5x that as soon as you unwrap it.

Anyway, on eBay UK completed listings, used Sigma 150-600mm Cs routinely have sold at £650-700 whereas new cost £799-899. So, they are holding their prices well.
[/quote]
Here in India Tamron and Sigma 150-600mm can be purchased for nearly half off the price of new lens. I havent purchased any big white(only rent it from time to time) so no idea how much they lose their value. Although from time to time I see 500mm f/4 on sale and the prices are really tempting.

Canon EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM

Tyroop said:
. Better than the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS? That really surprises me.

There is sample variation on all lenses, and so relative merits will vary according to the copies tested. Go to the photozone site and compare the MTFs of both lenses. They are pretty close on their copies, with the 70-200mm L IS being slightly ahead for theirs at comparable focal lengths. But, at the maximum focal lengths, their 70-200mm at 200mm and f/4 resolves 2392 lw/ph at the centre and 2280 at the edges whereas the 55-250 at 250mm resolves 2252 and 2055 respectively - only 6% less at the centre and 10% at the edge. But the 25% extra focal length gives effectively more resolution. Even stopping down to f/5.6 for the 70-200mm, still has it behind the 55-250 at 250mm for effective resolution.

Nikon's D850 product champions: 32 dudes, 0 ladies

This is going to get very depressing if we have feminism now invading photography. They do tend to pick one area and just relentlessly attack and most corporate structures now bow down to their nonsense. It will do no good to try to give an inch to placate them, they just relentlessly attack and moan and nag and it is just very unpleasant. I'm a gamer and have seen the world of gaming torn apart with all this over the past few years where once we were just left alone, indeed most women ridiculed us from the age of 15 onwards and mocked us and then a decade later the feminists want to just walk in to the top positions, now everything has to be seen through the prism of "sexism". It touches so many nerves, there is never any resolving the issues as feminists essentially want a utopian ideal that conflicts with human nature so the only way they are ever satisfied is with some authoritarian attempt to change human nature.

Men and women are different. No normal person has any problem with this. I just hope this blows over and they go looking for other targets. If Nikon starts apologising and begging for forgiveness then the feminists will smell blood and we will see more and more of this nonsense in the coming years.

So you spent years learning your craft and getting credentials for the photographers' area at your local sports stadium? Tough luck for you, you sexist, it should be 50% female. And how dare you produce photographs of healthy women? Stop fat shaming! etc etc That sort of nonsense will be seen more and more.

One advantage of a zoom over a prime is the retracted size. Its not a big deal with a wide or normal lens but a long zoom is pretty "long". How about a "collapsible" prime that packs down small. That seems like something that could improve on the current zooms at the max fl.

Exactly what I was thinking.
Why don’t manufacturers try to minimize the size of prime lenses by making them collapsible. In my view the problem with bigger size is not the usability, because I find bigger lens easier to hold in my arms, but the transport. I prefer smaller size lenses when I go hiking because they are easier to pack and you can use smaller bags.
They could have full size lenses, which are more robust for pros and lower cost collapsible lenses, which do not have to be built like tank, for us - consumer non pro users.

Yes CPS is awesome in most cities around the planet where they operate. Some may be better than others, but overall your CPS membership is one of the best value insurance you'll get.

I've been with CPS for almost 20 years and had service above and beyond time and time again. CPS was the sole reason I switched from Nikon which had appalling service here at the time. That changed some time ago and I believe they're a match for CPS. That's good!

The Sigma 100-400mm doesn't for some unknown reason. The alleged photo of the Tamron does show a narrower circumference where one might be fitted. But, it might be a mock up.

sRAW/mRAW... do you use it?

pwp said:
Would mRAW increase your burst depth?
If so, it might have its moments shooting sports action or BIF.

Do Nikon or Sony offer this odd little feature, or is it one of those exclusive Canon idiosyncrasies?

A few years ago I shot a public relations job and didn't notice that the camera (5D Classic) was set to small jpeg after an assistant had been messing around with it. That was a heart stopper. Oops! However I was amazed with careful processing how viable the files were for press release purposes, the client was happy. But never again. :P

Note: always check settings if someone else has been using your camera. :o

-pw

This is why I own 6 5D3's and 2 5D4's... Second (and often 3rd) shooters at all event and wedding gigs we are hired for are given studio owned gear for the duration of the assignment. I learned long ago not to trust other shooters or allow them to use their own personal gear. I sync and set all gear before use... no one changes anything. If they do that is usually their last assignment with me. Currently I have two teams of three shooters (including me) and a dedicated gear hound to take care of this for each assignment. I never want that feeling of having to "fix" a problem after the fact. Really amatuer looking and horrible for business.

As for sRAW and mRAW... never use it, but I don't shoot sports where I could see it needed. Only weddings, events and portraiture.
