Besides the EF 85mm f/1.4L IS, What are the Other 3 Lenses Coming?

Actually that 28/1.8 USM is a nice lens. I've used it on my 7D as a standart walkaround lens. On APS-C, the quality is good to very good from f/2.2-4 and build quality is also very decent with no moving parts, fast and silent AF and overall compactness and rigidity. But I sold it, when I purchased 24-70/2.8 II - apart from wider aperture, there is no contest. With 85/1.8 USM I've had nothing but bad luck. First copy was a dud and second one was not focusing reliably (on 7D). But as you said - both lenses are still relevant with only CA as a major weakness (and that 28/1.8 has a rather mushy corners on FF wide open as well).

Sounds like we used the 28mm for very similar purposes. It was my "normal" prime on crop and I used it a ton on a T2i and later on a 70D. I disliked it at f/1.8, but just stopping it down to f/2, f/2.2 did wonders. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with the 85mm. When I was still shooting crop, the purchase of the 85 is what made my 70-200 collect a lot of dust (for shots of the kids running around outside, etc.)

Something I didn't learn until a few years ago: usage of 'quite' differs between US English and UK English, and can cause confusion even between native speakers from the two countries. In America, 'quite good' means really rather good, but over here it more often means moderately good, i.e. British English uses 'quite' as less emphatic compared to American - so it's not quite (ha) fair to say one meaning is primary and another tertiary - it depends where one learned English. The tyranny of tiny differences!

If you prefer, you may consult the Oxford English Dictionary, where searching for words like 'color' and labor' redirects to the proper ;) spellings, namely colour and labour. The OED's first definition of quite is, "To the utmost or most absolute extent or degree; absolutely; completely." So if you feel that 'completely' is not the primary definition of the word 'quite', you may want to contact the OED editors and inform them that one of the 600,000 words in their 'definitive record of the English language' is improperly defined. I'd do it, but I'm sure they'd just ignore an American. :P

Heh.

I don't have access to the OED online, unless they've made it free? I think it's worth bearing in mind that dictionaries can be used well or poorly. For instance, some dictionaries list meanings in chronological order, others in the order of what is most used (and in this latter case, they may have a regional bias). Not to mention, some dictionaries are slower than others in reflecting changes in usage - although from what I know, the OED is pretty on the ball, and this usage of 'quite' is longstanding (Wiktionary suggest 19thC onwards; I haven't studied it in detail however). Quoting dictionaries as gospel without context is fraught with danger, however illustrious the institution.

All I'll say is, 'quite' when used to modify an adjective, often has a different emphasis in British English as opposed to American English (and even then, no doubt there are regional differences). This is further complicated as its meaning is heavily modified by the intonation used (*quite* good versus quite *good*).

Three more reasons why Canon should update XF300/305

Panasonic AG-UX180 is good, but I prefer FX300 simply because SDI output is more stable, with all panasonic cameras I have the same problem - sdi jitters when I mux it with the other sdi channel, let's say I use sdi over fiber extender, with canon no problem, with panasonic - jittering when muxed. Imho Canon wins anyway:)

Creative Transitions in Short Films (Holding On)

Hey, nice concept.
The pace in the opening sequence I feel could be a bit faster. It's a cool bit where they just get to know each other and it's fun, so no need to drag it out and be overly serious. Leave that for the last part of the film, like you did.
The drawings are really, really nice and well made!
I think you have two problems with it, though.
First, your transition is a bit Windows Movie Maker. The film starts out nice and has a cinematic feel to it, like there's a real story there, and then the transition throws you off completely. You don't need anything overly fancy, we get what we're seeing because they are drawn with the same shirts and height as in real life.
The other things is the background of the drawings. That cityscape tells me nothing and adds nothing to the story. The floating bokeh in the background is distracting and also serves no real purpose. As a viewer, I found myself losing focus from what's important, which is what they are doing. I failed to read some of the dates because I wasn't into the sequence so I lost the concept that time was moving forward.
One last thing, the score in the first part of your film and the drawings is way too ominous. I get that the second part is about something that's difficult to deal with, but as they just met and are college friends and do stuff together - the music is totally off and it seems like a boring and depressing friendship despite what's shown in the drawings.
I hope you take it all as constructive criticism, that's just my impression of viewing it one time and noting what struck me.
Good luck with it! :)

5D Mark 4 battery drain and meter timeout?

I used Wi-Fi yesterday to connect with my tablet, and played with some of the settings in preparation for the eclipse. The battery dropped a significant abount in just a few minutes, I doubt that it would last for the Eclipse photos while tethered wirelessly using liveview. It did not drop while letting the camera sleep, but dropped from 45% to 37% in 5 or 10 minutes, and I want to use it 2.5 hours!.

That convinced me, I ordered a Tether Tools case relay today, and am now looking for a USB battery pack or two, since batteries do fail, I thought two different brands might provide some redundancy.

Recommend a book on Canon DSLR video?

I would like to upgrade my rudimentary video skills. The manual that came with my 77D covers only the very basic steps and doesn't even mention some of the video features.

Is there a fairly recent book available on the use of current Canon DSLRs for video? If not, is there online material from Canon that goes into more depth than the owner's manual?

These Rebel-class bodies are getting so complex that they really deserve some organized learning. I can see why a lot of them get returned by novice users and recycled into the Canon Refurbished program.

Thanks!

Zeiss Milvus 1.4 35mm: Unboxing...

Yeah! Today I got the newest Member ob the Milvus Lens family from Zeiss for reviewing.... The first feeling is ... just another Milvus... (Having 3 Milvus Lenses ist the best thing to say about!!!!) It feels just awesome.

But unlike the 85 and the 50f1.4 the 35mm has strong competition:the Canon 35mm f1.4 IS USMII which is just an awesome Lens.

I will do a real world comparison - pretty soon! And this review will include the EF 35mm f2.0 IS USM as well... a real world 3 lens comparison....

If you can not wait: here is the unboxing... https://youtu.be/OX5VOOTfmOk

Sigma Artisans: Running With the New Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 OS Art

for what it is worth:

http://disq.us/p/1km7a5s

"... As a regional Tamron representative, I have been assured by Japan that this is not actually the case [of Tamron 24 70 F2.8 VC G2 to have the exact same optical design as the predecessor.]. Glass formula and coatings in particular have changed, as well. They are by nature of field of coverage and certain correction characteristics similar but improvements have been made throughout the entire piece, inside and out. It is considered an overhaul..."

PRO-1000 printer firmware 2.05

The conversation about "highest" print setting is strange to me. I purchased a Pro-1000 printer Jan 2017 and upgraded to 2.040.

Since day one my printer driver always offered a"highest" setting. Some papers have "high" setting greyed out, but never the "highest".

This is with Windows 10 running LR, using Canon driver version 2.97 on the PC. Connection is via routed subnet using hardwired 1 gigabit Ethernet.

The printer job management reports that it takes about 13.5 minutes to print a 17x25 inch sheet on setting "highest". Source image 6000x4000 pixels. (Paper: Red River Polar Matt. Not exactly Hahnemühle quality, but still pretty good. Most RR papers come in 25" sheet size.)

The Pro-1000 is now asking me to update to 2.050. Hmmm....

How to check the intended market region from serial number?

Hi all,

Over the last few months I've seen several eBay sellers make mention of being able to check if an item is a grey import or a genuine UK item from the serial number. Does anyone know if this is true? I've searched several times but each search seems to end with either links to decoding lens date/factory codes or discussions on the merits/downsides of buying grey imports, and I've not found any definitive guide to show which serials correspond with which market regions. Is this a load of nonsense or is there a link between serials and regions?

Cheers, Steve

Interesting wingeathon on Petapixel from the designer.

https://petapixel.com/2017/07/21/photo-gear-costs-costs/

Hmmm. Not sure this is a "wingeathon". I think it is pretty accurate.

<rant>
I work in an industry where this is becoming more and more a reality. Last week I interviewed an international candidate on behalf of my employer. The candidate indicated they wanted to work for my employer because he had "copied" our designs for a few years. They then went into great detail of how they did this. It costs my employer millions of dollars a year to protect our intellectual property against these types of operations. I have spent hours in courts "defending" my original designs seeking injunctions.

Yet, as photographers, we complain when someone "misuses" our images. This is no different to the above. Our photos are our intellectual property. We own them, and we should take the precautions to protect them.

We need to protect our intellectual property, no matter what form it takes. And sometimes we need to explain to others why things (eg. costs) are what they are.
</rant>

Anybody that is trying to claim a simple universal L-Plate costs $100,000 to bring to market is having a whinge. For goodness sake I have a friend who can CAD/CAM as many prototypes as you like in a variety of materials in a weekend as a hobby, he is currently making a 16' RMS Britannic, sister ship to the Titanic, in such detail it is to the plating rivet accurate.

I understand the premise, it is hard to manufacture stuff in 1st world countries when copies are so easy to make and ship from cheaper labour based and unregulated second world countries, but be accurate and truthful. Besides, if he was talking about this thread early on I am a supporter of quality custom products and their price.

I tried the USB Dock on my 35mm 1.4 DG HSM and 50mm 1.4 DG HSM and 20mm 1.8 EXDG.
It says that these lenses are not compatible with the optimizer pro while these are the lenses enlisted by Sigma itself.
I use Mac Sierra 10.12.5 and the optimizer software and the USB Dock are all updated.
:( any solution/suggestion please?
