Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT II Coming Soon [CR2]

Never mind. Weird. I think the problem were the 2 new sets of batteries. I tried another set and it's fine. I think it was the batteries. Whew!

If it requires a set of batteries that are super fresh, don't discount that there is a problem, and then miss your return window. I have a battery tester that tests at various loads to see how good my batteries actually are. Even the lower voltage Eneloop batteries drive a flash very well, so your batteries would need to be pretty weak to get that error.

Uncle Rog @ LR tests the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 OS

Mt Spokane Photography said:
He says the left the "F" off the front of ART.

Its pretty hard to do a great 24-70 lens and also keep the priced down. Canon spent a lot of time and money coming up with their existing one.

I have been saying this for some time.
Everyone has had a swing at this and only Canon seemed to make a success at the expense of a lot of criticism for not having IS.
At the time Canon said that adding IS would reduce IQ.
As no one has been able to prove them wrong, I am guessing they are correct.

AF speed of the new EF-S 35mm macro

Most have decided that its a food photography lens, which requires close focusing, but not 1:1. The working distance at 1:1 is pretty short for a 35mm lens, 100mm or better yet 180-200mm gives a reasonable working distance. I remember back in 1967 when I put a reverse lens ring on my 50mm FL lens for my first CANON SLR. I had to get so close that lighting the subject was extremely difficult.

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 OS Art Preorders Start June 22, 2017

WEX in the UK have it in stock now at £1399. DP Review have some sample images too: https://www.dpreview.com/samples/0532453776/sample-gallery-sigma-24-70mm-f2-8-dg-os-hsm-art?ref_=pe_1822230_245957160_dpr_nl_268_12

Whilst the EF 24-70mm f2.8L II USM doesn't have IS its only £ 100 more on Amazon UK and having used it many times one of Canon best zooms optically. The EF 24-70mm f4L IS USM is weak at 50mm but fine at 24mm and 70mm ends.
If I was spending £ 1399 for the Sigma I would seriously consider the EF 24-70mm f2.8L II USM.

Interesting... $1750 vs $1300 in the US. $450 difference. I'm cool if they add IS to the Canon and charge $250 more :)

While I was looking at the current price @ B&H, someone posted a negative review complaining about AF:

PhotoZone Review: Sigma 150-600 C

The "Sport" seem to be way better...

That's not what Photozone themselves say about their own tests:
" Its bigger cousin, the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports, is, of course, a little better across the range so if you can tolerate its heavy-weight and higher price tag, it is the superior lens. However, they aren't worlds apart either and the Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary is really a steal for the money."
No, but I usually look at data and ggraphs myself when interpretating a test and that that i see is that the Sport is way better at the long end and that's where these lenses lives most of their lives:

I read all the reviews, not one or two, and then test the lens I buy carefully (courtesy of the local store). Sure, you guys who look at one site and buy their lenses based on that one review deserve the lens you get.
Here is a link to a site where someone has tested both the Contemporary and Sport carefully:

https://improvephotography.com/36962/sigma-150-600mm-sport-vs-contemporary-lens-review/

and finds his copies of virtually identical sharpness and writes:

"I was so surprised by my results that even after testing and retesting, I read reviews from a few other reviewers who I respect and it looks like I'm not the only one who has found that these lenses have almost identical sharpness. Some of the reviewers I found said they felt the Sport had an very slight edge in sharpness, and others felt, as I did, that the Contemporary was just barely sharper. This isn't terribly surprising. Each copy of a lens performs differently, so to see some slight variation is normal."

Rumors on Nikon MLS.... A chance for us Canonians too?

Canon Rumors said:
Adaptors aren't sexy or user friendly. I wouldn't buy any full frame mirrorless camera from Canon that required an adaptor to mount an EF lens. I detested it when I went through my Sony phase.

Absolutely, I'm not interested in purchasing a whole new series of lenses. I see no oversll size advantage from mirrorless, simply because FF lenses do not get smaller with a mirrorless camera.

Sure, you can use a 40mm pancake lens, but thats not what pro level cameras are about, we want fast and long lenses as well as wide zooms. Those lenses would only get longer and heavier with a adapter attached.

I understand that some want a small camera, but it is only as small as the lens, and high quality fast lenses are big.
Very fair and accurate points regarding lens sizes relative to speed. It can make a difference for wide-angle lenses with a concentric design which is the whole point of a shorter back-focus but will be minimal with telephotos just look at Sony G star lenses.

Canon Stock Price Drops to More Than Two-Month Low After EU Threatens Huge Fine

Talys said:
I'm not counting, but I rarely see European tech, manufacturing, or automotive giants get hit fines of that scale. For example, I'm thinking Siemens, Nokia, or Mercedes-Benz -- as opposed to Microsoft or Google -- or Canon.

Maybe because you don't follow that news - it depends what news outlets you follow. Some well known names will hit the newslines, other less known ones won't.

Read one of the links I published before, "Antitrust: Commission fines banks € 1.49 billion for participating in cartels in the interest rate derivatives industry". Among the fined banks are Deutsche Bank, Société Générale, RBS.

Or this one: "The European Commission has found that MAN, Volvo/Renault, Daimler, Iveco, and DAF broke EU antitrust rules. These truck makers colluded for 14 years on truck pricing and on passing on the costs of compliance with stricter emission rules. The Commission has imposed a record fine of € 2 926 499 000." (http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-16-2582_en.htm, Daimler is the Mercedes-Benz parent company).

Siemens was fined for 400 millions euros in 2007 (http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-07-80_en.htm?locale=en).

Canon 70D vs M5

andrei1989 said:
soo i just got the m5 today :D plus a small bonus in the form of the sigma 150-600 C :)))

unfortunately they didn't have the ef-efm adapter in stock in my city and also amazon says it will be in stock on the 19th so i will keep searching these days for it or order from amazon next week..plus an extra battery..

the weight difference is huge: 565g for the m5 with the 15-45 VS 1380g for the 70D with the 15-85 (not a really fair comparison..i know)

Don't know if buying on Ebay is an option, but I just bought one for about $80 a couple days ago. I would check there to see if any authentic Canon adapters are available for a better price.

The 5DSR has similarly 25% more resolution than the 7DII.

AlanF, I'm not sure I understand what you mean by 25% more resolution. How do you measure it, and how does it translate to real world use or print sizes?

At the same distance to the chart with the 100-400mm II, the 5DSR resolves 2.5 lines/mm and the 7DII 2.0. It means that you get more detail, if it's there in the object. It probably means that you can upsize in PS by 25% in linear dimension relative to an image from the 7DII.

A little late reply. Thank you for clarifying, AlanF.

What gear for Airtattoo air show?

Thanks for all replies. At the end, I purchased Sigma 150-600 C and got it yesterday. It was too late to do rental and I always wanted some lens going beyond 400mm. I tried some panning shots yesterday with my dog chasing frisbee. Yeah, combination of this lens with 6D AF, fast moving planes and panning will be a challenge.

The lens has programable custom functions - I configured one to be AF priority, dynamic OS and 30m-infinity focus limiter. That will hopefully help a bit.

Hope this helps to those who are interested in buying one - https://www.adorama.com/cac200ef.html
B&H and Adorama are both advertising pre-orders for $7,499, where is this 20% you speak of?

Well, it's appreciated by many which is why I need to start buying stuff through your links.

That's a nice start :)

Full Specifications for the Canon EOS Rebel SL2

Faranell said:
I'm also planning to upgrade from SL1 to SL2, mainly because of video features. I barely use it for photo, so I don't really mind the 9 AF point system.

However I see that it has a DIGIC 7 image processor, compared to the DIGIC 5 in the previous model. I know it means a solid 1 stop improvement in case of ISO performace while shooting JPEG. But does it also effect video shooting? I would love it even more if videos shot at ISO 1600 would look like ISO 800 on SL1, but I don't know if that would work.
The DIGIC processor is also responsible for video noise reduction. Then you should have a video improvement with high ISO.
How much better?
Maybe it will come to an entire ISO stop.

Off Brand: Nikon Announces the AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR

HTML:
<p><strong>MELVILLE, NY (July 11, 2017 at 12:01 A.M. EDT) –</strong> Today, Nikon announced the new AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR, modernizing this popular zoom lens with a myriad of the latest Nikon technologies. The new lens features enhanced Vibration Reduction (VR) image stabilization capability and integrates a stepping motor for fast and quiet AF performance, making it Nikon’s first full-frame AF-P lens. This new NIKKOR lens is a versatile, compact telephoto option for intermediate FX and DX-format photographers looking to capture sports, wildlife, candids, travel and other subjects at long distances, all with stunning clarity.</p>
<p>“This latest lens reaffirms Nikon’s commitment to giving FX-format shooters of all levels the unparalleled quality of NIKKOR glass, with the benefits of our latest optical technologies,” said Kosuke Kawaura, Director of Marketing and Planning, Nikon Inc.</p>
<p><strong>Updated with the Latest NIKKOR Lens Technologies</strong>

Whether capturing a baseball game from the bleachers or the sights of a scenic vacation, the new AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR is a versatile lens that helps users capture sharp images and video, even in challenging light. The new AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm is lighter than its predecessor, despite packing new technologies that help those shooting photos and video achieve stellar results. Enhancements to the lens include:</p>

<ul>
<li><strong>Improved Vibration Reduction (VR) System:</strong> The new AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm lens provides users with up to 4.5 stops* of VR stabilization, to help create sharp photos and smooth video, even in low light or while handheld. Users can choose from either Normal or Sport VR Modes for added stability when shooting from a non-stationary location.</li>
<li><strong>Lightweight with Stepping Motor Technology:</strong> This AF-P lens uses a stepping motor for fast and quiet autofocus, which reduces the sound of lens operation while recording HD or 4K UHD video. This new technology also contributes to the lens’ reduced weight, making it easy to carry on all-day excursions.</li>
<li><strong>Electronic Diaphragm:</strong> This lens takes advantage of the fast burst speed of Nikon DSLR cameras, as the Electronic Diaphragm not only provides smooth exposure transitions during video capture, but also helps maintain consistent exposure during high-speed shooting, such as when photographing sports.</li>
<li><strong>Get Close:</strong> The AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm lens features a minimum focus distance of only 3.94 ft. (1.2 meters) and a reproduction ratio of 0.25x, letting users get even closer to capture the most extravagant details, even at 300mm.</li>
<li><strong>Lens Construction:</strong> The lens features dust and drip resistance, along with a metal lens mount for durability. It features a 9-blade diaphragm for a natural, circular bokeh. The lens also features an ED element to significantly reduce instances of chromatic aberration.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Price and Availability</strong>

The Nikon AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR lens will have a suggested retail price (SRP) of $699.95<span class="green">**</span>, and availability will be announced at a later date.
