As I've said before, I liked every aspect of Canon's cameras and systems except for one main thing:
THE IMAGE QUALITY.

And yet I don't see rafts of quality images where you can tell which brand was used. Superb images of wildlife, or whatever field you choose, which are *clearly* not-Canon. Why is that? Are most people blind? Or are you convicing yourself of a reality that doesn't exist?

if you go back and read the 2nd sentence below the one you quoted....

Easier to PP non-Canon files, you mean? It may be a fair point - I've not processed any non-Canon raw images, so I can't comment. I will say, however, that I rarely hit insurmountable problems in processing Canon files. But I actually enjoy post processing, I understand some do not and would want to minimise the time spent doing it.

You wouldn't want files from the Sony then. It took me much more work to get the subtle punch in my images from that camera. But malleability of the shadows - yes, different league, but I don't need or want it particularly.

I'm in the "don't want to PP more than I have to" camp. ABC files allow me to do quick global edits for the result I want.
I appreciate the art of talented PP work like those who are also good golfers....
But I don't want to spend my time doing either! :)

I know what you mean about that "subtle punch" part... local contrast?.. can look a bit weaker at times when so much dynamic range gets compressed.
I can get back enough of that quite easily with a simple and slight local contrast enhancement that takes a few seconds.

FWIW, sometimes I now shoot Fuji because I can get OOC jpg looking just how I want with no PP required...
If a minor exposure tweak is required... can do that in camera and have it re-process the raw file to another jpg. Rarely needed with excellent WYSIWYG EVF tho...

Either she's 4'10" or it's HUUUUUUGE. No thanks

The real problem I have with that picture is the obvious fudge... that bag had to be filled with crumpled newspaper because you don't see any veins bulging and pouring sweat from that tiny girls neck and arms. I just lugged something very similar in size but military issue, full... UW housing, 5D3, 5D4, 11-24, 35 II, 24-70 and 70-200 II, 2 Leicas and 2 crons plus all the plugs, cards, film, iPad and tripod. My back was hammered after 8 hour flight.

Off Brand: Leica Announces the TL2 Mirrorless Camera

HTML:
<p>Based on the Leica TL-System, which has been continuously advanced in terms of speed, ease of handling and flexibility since its market launch, the new Leica TL2 embraces all the perfected features and leads the innovative camera concept into a new generation with additional innovations and new design aspects. The particular hallmark of the Leica TL2 is the unusual design of its compact body. Each camera body is precisely machined from a single block of aluminium in the Leica factory. The use of premium materials and their engineering in an elaborate manufacturing process are unique in the history of camera construction and lend the Leica TL2 an unmistakeable look, feel and solidity.</p>
<p><strong>Brilliant still pictures and video footage</strong></p>
<p>The Leica TL2 is equipped with a newly developed, 24-megapixel CMOS sensor in APS-C format that, in combination with an equally new, Maestro II series high-performance image processor, guarantees outstanding picture quality with impressive dynamic range, excellent contrast and colour rendition, exceptional sharpness and finest resolution of details. However, the Leica TL2 impresses not only with its still picture performance, but also with its video capabilities. The camera’s various video recording modes, such as 4K (3840 x 2160p at 30 frames per second), full HD (1920 x 1080p at 60 frames per second), HD (1280 x 720p at 60 frames per second or slow motion [SLOMO] captured at 120 frames per second), leave absolutely nothing to be desired.</p>
<p><strong>Fast and almost silent</strong></p>
<p>One of the highlights of the Leica TL2 is its enormously improved AF speed and precision. For instance, the camera focuses sharply on subjects in around only 165 milliseconds (CIPA standard; Leica standard zoom lens at its wide-angle setting), and thus focuses up to three times faster than the previous model. The new Leica Maestro II series image processor not only plays a significant role in its faster autofocus, but also to the considerably shorter start-up time. Another new development is an electronically controlled shutter that enables silent exposures at shutter speeds up to 1/40,000 s and an increase in the continuous shooting rate from 7 to a maximum of 20 frames per second.</p>
<p><strong>Connectivity with and without a cable</strong></p>
<p>Thanks to the integrated Wi-Fi module of the Leica TL2 and the function for setting up a mobile hotspot, pictures and video can be conveniently transferred by wireless to smartphones, tablets and desktop PCs from anywhere and then, for example, be shared by email, on Facebook, Instagram or other social media. Data can also be transferred lightning fast by cable with the camera’s integrated HDMI and USB 3.0 ports. The USB port also enables recharging of the Leica TL2 without a battery charger – for example from a laptop computer or an external power bank.</p>
<p>With the TL App available for both iOS and Android devices, smartphones or tablets are transformed into electronic viewfinders and offer remote control of various exposure-relevant parameters such as the shutter speed and aperture. The TL App also makes it much easier to capture photos and video from unusual angles, with a self-timer or with longer shutter speeds.</p>
<p><strong>Modern, intuitive and versatile</strong></p>
<p>By grouping menu items according to related functions, the menu of the Leica TL2 is now more clearly and logically structured and makes camera handling easier and even more intuitive than before. With the MyCamera menu, the user interface can be further personalised to meet the photographer’s preferences or particular needs. This means that the photographer always has fast access to all frequently used features and presets. Thanks to significantly increased reactivity and up to eight times faster response when using the touchscreen, camera handling is now even more efficient and intuitive. At the heart of this is a bright and clearly laid-out 3.7″ LCD touchscreen display that enables both composition and reliable and convenient assessment of subjects before and after exposure. The only other controls are four ergonomically positioned haptic control elements that are intuitive in their operation. This ensures that camera users can concentrate fully on composing their pictures – without any unnecessary distractions.</p>
<p><strong>The best in its class</strong></p>
<p>The comprehensive portfolio of lenses in the Leica TL-System offers an ideal range of focal lengths for all situations and types of photography. The system currently comprises six lenses – three prime lenses and three zooms – that meet the needs of every photographic situation. The two fast prime lenses, the Leica Summicron-TL 23 mm f/2 ASPH. and the Summilux-TL 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH., are classic focal lengths for reportage photography, and the APO-Macro-Elmarit-TL 60 mm f/2.8 ASPH. complements them ideally as a lens for finely detailed close-up photography. The three compact zoom lenses, the Leica Super-Vario-Elmar-TL 11–23 mm f/3.5–4.5 ASPH., Vario-Elmar-TL 18–56 mm f/3.5–5.6 ASPH. and APO-Vario-Elmar-TL 55–135 mm f/3.5–4.5 ASPH., cover an entire range of focal lengths equivalent to 17 to 200 mm (equiv. in 35 mm format) and deliver exposures with rich contrast from corner to corner of each frame.</p>
<p>All Leica TL-Lenses impress with exceptional imaging performance at all distances from closest focusing distance to infinity and deliver pictures with the inimitable ‘Leica look’ and unique bokeh. Developed by optical design specialists in Wetzlar (Germany), they offer the exceptional imaging performance for which Leica lenses are famed. The combination of optical and precision engineering expertise and the use of finest materials in their construction ensures their constant quality and reliability in use.</p>
<p><strong>Sustainability guaranteed by cross-system compatibility</strong></p>

<p>Thanks to the L-Bayonet mount shared by the Leica TL and SL cameras, SL-Lenses can also be used without an adapter on the Leica TL2. With this, Leica once again carries forward its fundamental principles of cross-system compatibility and sustainability, which is now also reflected in a uniform product designation. Dedicated adapters are available for using Leica M and R lenses on TL-Cameras – the Leica M-Adapter is available in a choice of black or silver finish.</p>
<p><strong>New design in two colour options</strong></p>
<p>The Leica TL2 will be offered in a choice of two different colours from the start. The design of both the silver and black versions of the camera has been slightly revised in comparison with its predecessor. In addition to chamfered edges the body also features redesigned control elements that have been modified not only in visual style, but also provide a new haptic experience.</p>
<p>Functional camera accessories, such as high-quality protectors in Nappa leather, which can stay on the camera when changing the battery, and colour-coordinated carrying straps in stone-grey, black, red, yellow and cemento, are ideal complements to the TL system portfolio.</p>

This is everything that's wrong with photogaphic kickstarters

I'm a regular on Kickstarter. It's a very clever move by a company. You get your sales upfront and get a lot of advertising. You also buy add ons. Your financial risk on a new product is much lower. Your backers are paying your R&D costs. I bought a Petzval lens and I quite like it. I've a number of Peak Design bags. I've never been happy afterwards with Peak Design bags. They are too expensive and some of them not comfortable. I was very tempted by the Meyers Optik Trioplan. I thought the price too high. I bought a second hand Trioplan. The lens is fine , the adapter Fotodiox is not so good. The results however are good. Not a very sharp lens but I love the bubble bokeh. I looked at this lens. I couldn't see the point of it. It's a clever piece of selling. It's a pity you can't comment unless you invest. You could warn people it's not a great investment. It's quite common in Kickstarter for jackets etc to sold at way higher prices than you would in a shop. What surprises me is the lack of really innovative inventions. They are almost all me too products. There are some good photo books I've backed down through the years.

Canon is really a Schrödinger's cat.
It is both in state of doomed and not doomed simultaneously. The perceived state depends on how you look at it.

Schrödinger's doom. All insecure ABC users perceive Canon as doomed, while many happy Canon users seems to lack such perception.

Or maybe it's Heisenberg's principle of doom - Canon is doomed, but can't tell exactly why and if the can tell, then Canon is suddenly not doomed at all :D

You Wanted it, and Canon Is Delivering. The PC-E2 is Coming This Week

the photo on Canon's website of how you can wrap it around your camera

Exactly, it's something for people used to the noble tradition and art of origami.

As myself, I guess I will forget how to properly fold and wrap it around my camera quite soon, and after some Donald Duck attempts, I will get an ugly blob from which the camera would slip out easily.

More or less like some foldable light shapers, and other items, which I never learn how to fold and put everything into the box properly.

Jokes aside, it could be a simple option to protect your camera when you need nothing more, even if the price looks at Canon levels. But in the heat of 6DII and SL2 release, it was simply too funny to mock it....

Lee Filters Actively Working on EF 11-24mm f4L Solution

I got a set of 150mm filters (Lee), works pretty good. No crazy stuff like letter-sized filters, very convenient to handle / replace / adjust / use with other lenses. The 11-24 works fine in between 12-13mm, heavy vignetting @ f/4, but improves around f/8. I rarely shoot anything wider 14mm, so I guess it's ok for now. Lighthouse time!

P.S. really can't see anything via 15 stopper during bright day light. 10 stopper works fine via LV, but not during twilight.

Lenses don't 'give you compression'.
But we all know what he means don't we? It is academic whether it is the lens that is creating the compression effect or the distance you are from the subject when you take the picture. The point is that the image will look more compressed if a long telephoto lens is used rather than a lens with a shorter focal length.

No I don't think we do know what he means. How does a 100 not "give you the compression of the... ...70-200s"?

aceflibble said:
Second, Canon's 100mm f/2. It doesn't give you the compression of the 135mm or any of the 70-200s.

That makes even less sense! Any 100mm lens, or zoom spanning 100mm will give you exact;y the same perspective. It won't 'compress' anything, but it will give you a perspective.

The problem with these oft repeated inaccuracies is they confuse people with less understanding or education. My calling for accuracy in terminology is not me being pedantic, it is an effort to prevent confusion in others.

Lenses do not create 'compression', use an 18-200mm zoom and stand in the same place and take a shot at both ends of the zoom range then crop the 18mm image to the same framing as the 200mm image and the 'compression' is the same. Because I was taught perspective rather than compression that is an obvious fact to me, people taught about lens compression often struggle to get their heads around the concept of perspective because of that falsehood.

Am I wrong to point that out?

Yes, because the terminology you were taught is far more confusing and probably incorrect. The perspective changes between the viewer and the subject when the viewer moves left, right, up or down. Compression implies that the viewer seems closer to the subject, which is what zooming - or cropping - does.

Pretty simple to understand. You seem to be confusing the terms perspective and field of view. Narrowing the field of view does nothing to change the perspective, it changes the apparent distance between camera and subject, in other words, the compression.

No.

Perspective is the spatial relationship between you and all the things in the image. Compression is a bullsh!t term that implies a longer lens will give you a different perspective from the same place than a shorter one, which is not true.

See the red highlighted line above, acefibble is not using the term as you understand it, he is directly stating compression is a function of focal length and can not be replicated, that is not what you or I am saying, we are saying 'compression' is perspective and is the same regardless of focal length, it changes when you move, not when you change lens.

For illustrative examples look at this post, http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=19483.msg366490#msg366490

In search of an ~50mm faster prime lens

Khalai said:
For technical work, I'd perhaps consider Zeiss Milvus 50/2 Makro-Planar or Zeiss Milvus 50/1.4 Distagon. Insanely sharp lenses with amazing contrast and microcontrast. If you can live without AF of course.
I manually focus most of the time anyway. But no, those two are out of the question for me simply as the insurance costs skyrocket when adding that much value to the lens drawer. I already need to downscale as the premiums have gotten ridiculous.

Nikon battery recall

All Li-on batteries are potentially dangerous, and companies are more aware of it due to pressure from safety agencies. Treat them carefully, always use Canon chargers for Canon batteries, same for Nikon, don't use them if they are hot, as when pulled out of a hot car that has been sitting in the summer sun. Let them cool first. Charging hot batteries can cause a thermal runaway (meltdown). The Canon battery / charger combination have circuitry to attempt to prevent this, but cheap third party chargers have been known to damage it in the batteries.

Canon EOS 6D Mark II Manual Now Available

Hey Scott, you've probably noticed how valuable multiple AF buttons can be with their "overriding the shutter" characteristic on the 1DX2. If I'm understanding correctly, with the 6D2 3 buttons can AF but it'll be the same AF function or IOW essentially redundant.

As far as metering goes, I've been shooting straight manual quite a bit and I do feel there are circumstances with action where I prefer the spot focus with linked exposure to the spot. This would likely be flitting birds in and out of shadow. Of course everyone has their work-arounds as I did shooting with the 6D and likely once again with the 6D2.

Farewell 5D MK III and 1D Mark III

Since I had all my cameras cleaned up and boxed, I had to shoot photos of the MK III by firing up my 17 year old Nikon CP990, all 3.3 MP.

Does the CP990 have dual slots and 4K?

hehe.

As I recall, the CP 990 cost $1000 back when it came out, plus a flash and flash bracket ran up the price a lot, it was likely the best camera in that price range. The lens was and is excellent. Less than 2 years after I bought it, the Canon Digital Rebel came out, and I immediately bought one. It was a big upgrade, but I missed the live view of a P&S. I upgraded to a XT, 30D, and finally, jumped on the 40D with live view. I was doing product photography and live view was a huge time saver, allowing me to get a shot right the first time in most cases.

Tethered shooting means no card slot worry, and I do not do video of my products either. Many of those CP 990 shots are still in use on internet product listings. I get better colors and generally a better all around image with a FF camera, but then reduce the image and throw away most of the pixels.

My hobby is theatrical photography, that's where the FF sensors make a difference, very low light, all kinds of colored lights and often dance or fast movement make it challenging. The CP 990 would never work for that.

Poll: What Do You Think About the EOS Canon 6D Mark II?

David_B said:
I've been reading lots of posts on this website about the 6D Mark II and decided to write first post for this poll.

This camera looks good but who is it for?

Right now I have the 80D and iPhone 7. My iPhone is perfect for all of my "on-the-go" photos, including birthdays, etc, and if I want to be a little more serious, the 80D is giving me lovely images. The 6D Mark II will need to offer much more impressive images for me to upgrade from the 80D. If I was still using the 70D or 7D Mark II or some earlier Canon camera, sure I will upgrade to 6D Mark II but with the 80D, I don't need it.

When I shoot video, I'm never using my 80D, just the iPhone, same as my friends that do video. I'm thinking that the video train has already left the station and Canon is still standing on the platform. So I don't mind no 4K in the 6D Mark II.

I think this Canon camera is just for people that already own Canon and want to stay with Canon. It doesn't have good video to make people give up another camera or brand for this one if they do video and nobody that use other brand for photos is going to move for it because they already got good images too.

This is perfect camera for people that already own earlier Canon cameras and want to upgrade or have bigger Canon cameras and want to add something else (the flip-panel for video is something that more expensive cameras don't do.)

Hope that's all ok.

It's not that hard to figure out. Part of the problem is that if your usage pattern does not necessitate a certain body, then it's no real concern of yours, making it hard to distinguished whom (ie. what kind of shooter) it is for.

As a 6d1 owner, I'd love to trade up and take pressure off my workhorse 5d3. For landscapes, this will also be aces, with flippy and touchscreen. Time lapses? Never shot one in my life, but now I can in 4k. Great. More Mp? bigger prints, more cropping for us serious croppers (crop till you drop!).

With decent AF points, can also capture action. Studio? In the bag. Probably the only thing this isn't "great" for is expeditions and the Olympics, or paparazzi.

SO basically, you obviously dont "need' a full frame camera. Some of us absolutely do. And as a basic FF cam, this covers a lot of basic needs. And for the love of all that's holy, there's a FLIPPY SCREEN. I haven't had another since my g12.
