580EX-II strange failure

YuengLinger said:
Curious: How old is it and approximately how many times have you flashed it? (Maybe LR would help with an estimate?)

Also, how much would you be willing to pay Canon to fix it if home remedies don't work?

Wish I could help, but the only time I had similar behavior was with a fairly new 600ex-rt that slammed to the ground while I was running with it in my hand. It would power on but not flash. Canon charged me about $150. Wish now I could remember what exactly they repaired.

It's some 5-6 years already. Not going to pay Canon to fix, I'll open it myself and if something obvious is broken/loose I'll fix. If not, I'll probably find another used one somewhere.

~3 years ago the bulb exploded while shooting (full power for quite a while), I bought new bulb from Canon and replaced it. Probably shot ~50k with the flash since, so maybe it was just time to die.

600EX has same bulb, it basically adds the radio (which I don't need) and slightly better zoom I guess so they go 580 -> 600. For that increase I'm not planning to pay much, so if I found used 600 for <$250 I might get one but more likely used 580-II for <$200.

:o I hope, you still have one to play.

Grandchild on the way.
Best wishes for the mother and child.
I'm sure you all will have a wonderful time as soon as he/she is there :)
:) Still have my Yamaha. Unfortunately I sinned and sold my Martin. Fortunately, I have never learned to play. So while I will miss holding her and sniffing the sound hole, the lens will get better used.

I sniffed the Yamaha sound hole... it just smells like glue. :)

Thanks for the well wishes. :)

Canon Profit set to Double

mitchel2002 said:
the question now stands will canon turn there R&D to cameras or the surveillance field

R&D for sensors potentially benefits all sensors, new design techniques, new manufacturing processes, better lenses, these things can apply across the board.

Even R&D in medical imaging can benefit, a lot of that is in the electronics and software for ultrasound imaging. Canon has been in both of these fields for a long time. If you look at patents published weekly, most are for printers with cameras, and medical / surveillance being about equal.

Technophobe or technology snob?

Valvebounce said:
Interesting survey, especially as someone here confessed to being a technology snob (from your definition, - using knowledge of technology to make others feel dumb) :o ??? :)

I know one of those people but then he wouldn't be on this forum as he has a distinct hatred of Canon/Nikon and any other company that markets "full frame" cameras. He is constantly going on about how the features of his m4/3 camera save him "83%" of his time in setting up a shot...it's just a pity he doesn't use the time saved to think about his composition as they are mostly rubbish! He especially loves the camera's "live composite" mode but I tell him there are a couple too many vowels in the second word. ;D

Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM

Really, I get to be the one to start this thread? I bought this lens a while back but only really took it out and tested it for the second time today. I like the results. My skill level has room for improvement in using AI Servo but where I had good technique (keeping the focus points on the same point on the subject) I had good results (see sample 2 below). I was also impressed with the closeness of focus at 18mm. All shots taken with a 7D Mark II at ISO 400.

Edit.
I removed the original posting and reposted as I realised I had the wrong sized (huge) images linked, sorry. :-[

Frustrated with filters and step down rings.

retroreflection said:
I would also challenge you on missing the shot because you can't get the step down rings off. Shouldn't you power through without the filter?

When my 82mm circular polarizer is stuck to a filter ring and the shot requires that I use a 6 stop ND filter in the middle of the day like below... no, I can't just power through. :) Yes, I could take a snapshot, but the effect wouldn't be nice.

As usual ML proving canon is doing everything to protect higher end cameras. Also if that firmware works, value of 5D mk3 on used market will go up.

Lol, you're funny. I don't disagree the protect their cine line but to point to a firmware update that isn't production proven, Only films for seconds at a time and has come 5 years after a camera's release is pretty hilarious!
I think it is more than obvious that the "5 years after" is due to the slight detail that they did not have the inside information that Canon has for ... their own products.

I think all of the above is giving Canon waaaaaaay too much credit.

If Canon is anything like other behemoth companies they probably have a very narrow idea what is 'possible' with their hardware until they see the results first hand and release the hardware it into the wild. I'd also be shocked if they did any kind of 'audible' late in the hardware or software/firmware pre-production cycle. UI tweaks from Canon tester feedback, sure. 4K after planning to release 1080p ... no chance.

They already know what will or will not be included in the 5DSR Mark II, the 5D Mark V, and the 1DX Mark III. We just won't know until its too late too make changes.

if it's also like most other companies, the firmware developers probably have a very short window in which to work on each camera specifically, so they have more the blinders on to what the hardware may accomplish or may not.

also everything has to be tested thoroughly, then translated to multiple languages, manuals created, etc.

let's assume the average time in development is 2 or so years, that means at any one particular point in time there's 6-8 DSLR's, 2-3 MILC's and probably around 3-5 P&S cameras. Their involvement in each camera may be measured in terms of months.

the ML group had 5+ years to look through the 5D .. yes, they have less assets and less information to what the hardware does or can do, but they also have zero time constraints.

doing it on your free time with no insider info turns 5+ years of ML time into like 3-4 months of Canon engineering time, if even

Opinion: What is a Rumors Site?

Valvebounce said:
Hi unfocused.
Much as I support your call for serious coverage of the industry, I think (though I am not 'in the know') you will find that much as the 'softball' interviewers would like to ask some tougher questions they often (always?) cannot due to their interview questions being screened for compatibility with a company's strategy, stray off the fanboy course too far and there is no coming back!

Cheers, Graham.

unfocused said:
No one seems to be covering the industry in a serious way (and I don't mean softball interviews with company executives, where the interviewers fawn over their subjects and never ask any difficult questions -- there are plenty of those).

Assuming Canon Rumors wants to grow, that seems to me to be a logical and much-needed direction to take.

Yes. If a company thinks they can dictate the terms of the coverage they will. But, journalists only have themselves to blame if they accept those terms. In the case of what often passes for business journalism, far too many accept the conditions and are content to serve as unpaid publicists. That doesn't mean ethical journalists should stop trying.

Hi Harry.
I only see two problems with this philosophy, paramedics are trained to ignore those making the most noise and concentrate on the quiet ones whilst the police are trained to concentrate on the noisy ones and the quiet ones are paid much less attention.
Good luck on your way through life.

Canon Product Advisory: EOS C300 Mark II/EOS C300 Mark II PL Malfunction with VPG130 CFast Card

Hi Harry.
Please could you stop randomly hitting return half way through a sentence, IT does NOT make IT easier to read, I find it makes it harder, see my edit! ALSO why do you feel you need TO SHOUT groups of WORDS sporadically THROUGHOUT a sentence?

Start edit.

YES it's nice that Canon fixes things pretty well...BUT...can you FINALLY GIVE US PROS what we WANT!

H.265 4:4:4 16-bits per colour channel (48 bit colour) Video CODEC on Canon C700, Canon C300 Mk2, Canon 1DxMk2 and Canon 5D Mk4 and a Still Photos Based JPEG-2000 Wavelet compression ALSO AT 4:4:4 16-bits per colour channel (48 bit colour).

On ALL cameras output frames sizes should be user-selectable but ALWAYS USING Lanczos-3 or Lanczos-5 based image resampling with a USER-SELECTABLE AMOUNT of "UnSharp Mask" filter added AFTER resizing to enhance sharpness of object edges only!

DO THIS CANON VERY SOON NOW or my money will be going for multiple SONY A9's and multiple F65 CineAlta cameras!
End edit.

Cheers, Graham.
