Canon Announces the Rebel T7i

For weight reasons I'd like to stay with the "lower" bodies. However, it's discouraging to hear, that the electronic level does not work so well. Even point and shots like Sony HX30 have GPS and electronic level. Agreed, it's not that accurate, but at least on a point and shoot one doesn't expect it to be, and it does help to keep the camera at least relatively straight.
But when travelling, you don't take tripod and bubble level along, you want to shoot your scenery, and when later it looks a tad off - yes you can rotate it, but it would be better to get it right.

FWIW the level in my 60D and 80D has always worked well. Its precision is spec'd at about +-1 degree so some small tweaking is often required in post (I often do +-0.5 degree corrections because I seem to notice tilted horizons very easily).

thanks for the info. Actually working in graphics programs, a line that is off by 0.5 is noticeable, maybe because of the horizontal menus, top and bottom screen edge.

Please help to download 1DsII offical samples

I don't know where you can get those particular samples. However, I'm sure there are many thousands of images taken with that camera over on Flickr and across the internet (if you're curious about the image quality).

Nearly 9,000 images here:

If you need those specific official Canon samples, then I can't help (I tried looking though).

Sigma 135mm f/1.8 Rumored Again, As Well as a Sigma 14mm f/1.8 [CR1]

at shorter focal length is certainly doable but larger front element was likely required to accommodate IS group and avoid vignetting at longer focal lengths. if Sigma 85 F1.4 Arts 86mm large front element is something to go by, then 105mm large front element for stabilised 135 F1.8 Art lens is likely. it will end up being a massive lens. 70-200 F2.8 size like (and much more girth) springs to mind? I understand that Sigma is different, but ... :)

Small handful out there already that are f/1.8 and f/1.7 from SONY and Fuji at shorter focal length, so I'm sure Canon (and Sigma) can do it in a large 135mm shell.

Sony SLT a99 II Review by DPReview

Maximilian said:
Thanks for sharing.

And while Sony is always able to shine on the data sheet (eg. 12 fps @ 42 MPx) these interesting statements once again show the reality:
•AF subject tracking cannot follow intended subjects reliably, which should've been the #1 benefit of SLT
•Overwhelming menus with a lack of a customizable page

If I need 12 fps to get just some sharp but not the ones where the timing is perfect, I don't need so much fps.
And if the user interface is "overwhelming" I will not be able to adapt my high speed tool to the situation in time.
It seems that the Canon and Nikon fps guns weren't inspiring enough to Sony's development department.
I had the original A99 which offers a similar Dual AF (PDAF + OSPDAF). And even with the newly released (in 2013) 50 1.4 ZA it couldn't use the OSPDAF for precise focusing (i.e. I had to micro-adjust the lens for the regular PDAF). So it's kind of hard to understand what's the point... The a99-2 does look great on paper indeed, and for most DPR readers that's all that matters (they don't read fine prints also ;) ). As far as I understand the 12 fps mode is not for "live" tracking (slideshow in the viewfinder), but they still say it's a 12 fps machine.

I'm not in love with this speculation, but they way I received it gave it some credence. I'm honestly tired of posting 50mm prime rumors that I'm not absolutely sure on. :)

Thanks for your reply, we also get it. The 50 thing is tiresome. Embrace the pickle jar or move on I say.

World Press Photo of the Year 2017

Hi Maximilian.
Ok it seems I should have checked the dates, so really it is for a completed year and they should have the balls to just call it how it is!

Cheers, Graham.

Hi Maximilian.
Slightly off topic, but how can this be the shot of 2017 with 10 months of the year left to go? ???
I have never understood things like this, like the car of the year, awarded at the end of February, except photography makes even less sense as the cars are already designed, the news has yet to happen!
Thanks for sharing it anyway. :)

Cheers, Graham.
Yes, you are right, Valvebounce. And it's irritating me, too. And I checked it twice before I gave this thread the title "2017".
Especially as the photos were all made in 2016 (the winner at December 19th).
I suppose if they called it the award for 2016 awarded in Feb. 2017 they think others might say "Oh, they're so yesterday!" ;-)

Ah... church directory photography, you'd not believe how many enquiries I get every week for this... ;-)

Agreed, this is like so many consultant reports from consultants who don't really know the business. Looks like a lot of old data extrapolated out to 2021. Check the latest CIPA estimates - the 'camera' side of the industry is still going down.

Beside, any report that indicates the significance of smart phone cameras while leaving Apple out of the list of players is truly suspect!

5D3 playback won't work in cold

Hi MrFotoFool,
You and I were baffled by the "LOCK" right below the wheel. I was shooting photos for a house listing and was trying to change the exposure setting and the "L" showed on the view finder. Can't change the exposure adjustment. Kind of frustrating, having the agent and clients there. Speak of sweat running!
Got home to find what I broke.
That LOCK ought to have a lock of its own!
Glad you got your camera fixed and can shoot at low temperature, just keep yourself warm, batteries, too, and the LOCK unlocked.
Great visit to Austria and possibly to Australia.

"Sold by the dozen" is a way of saying that means that (at least in Italy) a big number

Does not mean that have sold "only one dozen"... ;D

I've learned something!

I guess it means "people buy a dozen at a time" kinda like hot cakes or something. Not that a dozen people bought one.

Though I guess some people might actually buy a dozen of a particular lens just to find the best one and then return the rest! :P

No no !!!
"Sold by the dozens" means "in great number"!!! ::) and here we are not talking about cakes... ;D

Jokes aside, in the huts and photo-hunting, I saw in these last months many Sigma (and less Tamron, in truth).
Maybe because we are in economic crisis and therefore we do not have too much money to spend for our hobby... :'(
Blessed are you who paid in $ and with much less taxs (in Italy over 21% respect to the list price) !!!

Just to clarify -

In the U.S and U.K (and other English speaking countries) we have an expression "selling like hot cakes" which has the same meaning as "sold by the dozen" meaning - sold in large quantities.

Things that commonly sell like hot cakes include - new iPhones, new PlayStation and cheap lenses like the 50 1.8 ;D

Oh well !!! Now I understand...
But let us "return to bomb" (another Italian expression to say "we return to speak of Main topic").

For Canon, is this the moment to improve the best 70-200 F4 on the market?

Sigma 85mm Art outscores the 85mm Otus (...on a D800E)

according to DXO, Sigma 50 Art and Sigma 85 Art are equally sharp ( sharpness: 40).
That does not ring true according to my own experience. Sigma 50 Art is a very sharp lens. I owned 3 copies of Sigma 50 Art so far. Best Reikan Focal QoF lfor the Sigma 50 Art I had so far is: 1890.
Best Reikan Focal QoF result for my Sigma 85 Art is: 2220. That is much sharper.

EOS M5: A damned good camera! Comparison with the 7D MkII and the Lumix GX80

I reviewed my M5 with my other Canon APS-C camera as well with my "always with me travel gear" of the last years - the µ43 system - and my newest camera there: the Lumix GX80 - which ic called in other Countries GX85 or GX81...

The M5 is a really great camera. And as a mirrorless camera it has some outstanding features - one side is the focusing confidence o Dual Pixel AF. Another topic is the really great connectivity in combination with the Canon Camera Connect app. This is just awesome...

Images & Specifications for the Canon EOS 77D

foo said:
The more I think about it tho the 77D is realy just an 80D-lite that's trying to capture some more of the Rebel users and gently encourage them a bit more upmarket. Probably Canon did well out of the 760D then, perhaps better than they expected, so continuing the theme? Either way, will be interesting to see the final feature/price differences between this and the 800D

Yeah, I think the 760D was an experiment to see if there's demand for a "Rebel plus". Apparently there was, and I guess there's even more demand for a "80D lite" like you said - it's probably not even that much about the feature set but the branding. Especially in the US and Japan.

What will the 77D get that the 800D won't?

ahsanford said:
Everything's lining up like it's 80D sensor for the 77D and possibly for the 800D as well.

For those knowledgeable with AF/sensor relations, wouldn't 24 MP + DPAF somewhat imply the 800D has the same sensor as the 80D? And if so, would that not mean that the full 45 AF points are more likely than not?

- A
Yea, I agree it's most probably the same sensor. There's not necessarily any link between the AF sensor specs and the imaging sensor. They're two different sensors in different places in the camera body.
It's reminding me of the old 18mp sensor that Canon stuck in almost every crop sensor body a while back, from the 7D, 60D, t3i, t5 all the way to the t6 and t5i

Here's a link to my video segment on whether or not the new 70-300 IS II is sharp or not - http://bit.ly/70300Sharp

Very interesting! (Although I admit I haven't watched the whole thing - just watched bits and pieces.)

Am looking forward to hearing your final conclusions in due course Dustin, but sounds to me like the lens might turn out to be pretty good after all, especially once you factor in price and weight.

I actually think it is pretty good.

Great to know! The next question is - do I want a 70-300 IS II or a 135L as a travel telephoto?!? I've often wanted to justify (to myself) buying a 135L (and a 135L would also serve as a great portrait lens and no doubt it's optically better), but I'm thinking a 70-300 IS II would probably be the more useful for my use really. Oh well, that's all getting even further OT.

Thanks again for the review Dustin.

As someone who owns the 135L I can tell you that I have never once traveled with it. The 70-300 would be way more useful IMO. Unless you're going to be shooting wide open, thin dof type headshots on your travels I'd say the zoom is a better bet.

The IS alone is useful enough. I find the 135L limited when the light levels go down. Razor thin dof is not my thing mind so I guess some would argue the f/2 case. But even then you gotta really watch the shutter speed with this thing as I've found anything under 1/200s can cause blurring. Even the steadiest would be at 1/100 maybe.

With the IS lenses you can easily shoot at 1/30 or 1/15 and get reasonable results. Plus you might just get something in focus!

The 70-300 with the LCD even gives feedback about lens shake. Further improving your chances of a half decent shot.

135L comes into it's own for indoor sports or outdoor where the action is close like 3 on 3 basketball. At f/2.8 it's razor sharp. Wide open is OK but personally I avoid it and start at f/2.8, so for me having a 70-200 f/4 IS I find few opportunities to use my 135L. But when I do the results are impressive!

Thanks Zv. When I've asked around previously, I've found a pretty even split between those who like using their 135L as a small, light telephoto for travel and those who think a 135mm prime just isn't very useful as a travel lens. My heart says 135L (I really am a fan of a lot of the images I see taken with it), but my head says the 70-300 (or just carrying the 70-200 2.8L or going without a telephoto) is probably the way to go for my purposes.

I don't have any trips coming up soon, sadly, so I won't be making any decision immediately. Might see where the price of the 70-300 IS II settles later in the year.

I guess it depends on each persons individual style of shooting. When I travel abroad I like to take the least amount of gear possible so I end up taking just my wide angle zoom and general purpose (24-105L). 105mm is not long enough but I can live with that as most shots I take are landmarks, landscapes and street scenes. I've often wished I had a small and light image stabilized tele for some different viewpoints and details though.

The 135L is actually kinda hefty. It "feels" about as heavy as my 70-200 f/4L IS (I just looked it up and there's only 10g difference between them; 135L is 750g and 70-200 is 760g) There's that huge front element which weighs a fair bit. Plus the hood on the the 135L almost doubles the working length of the lens. However, take the hood off and you can use this lens out on the streets in a sort of "stealth mode" as it doesn't attract much attention, it just looks like an ordinary sized black lens.

The 70-300II is 710g in comparison. Not a whole lot different but when you're carrying it on your back all day it can add up.

If I didn't have the 70-200 I'd probably have bought this 70-300II right away. It seems like a great travel companion.

Looking like the '90D' will be a good one.

benkam said:
I know, I know too early but with what Canon's supposedly going to be trickling down to the 800D and 77D with DPAF for both plus 45-point AF for the latter, the future "90D" could be a really good one.

A new sensor of course. 28 MP or perhaps more? A jump ahead in sensor tech like from the 5D3 to the 5D4?

Guessing Canon will at least go 8 fps, to improve an extra fps on the 80D and create some separation from the 6 fps of the 77D and 800D. A small upgrade from the current 7 fps but that brings it to the burst rate of the sporty original 7D.

Next up if Canon's handing down the 80D's 45-point AF to the 77D is giving the "90D" the 7D2's 65-point AF! Guessing the "7D3" would get an AF system closer to the AF point count of Nikon's 153-point, 99-cross-type in its D500. The 65-point AF for the "90D" would also probably require giving it, finally, an AF thumbstick.

Also time to give the 80D successor dual SD slots.

OK, there'll that 4K stuff too.

Likely at least a year out from now but the "90D" is already looking good just basing on the features recently rumored that the lower-tier 800D and 77D are getting.

It's a rumor site, so I think wild speculation is welcome! (Wild speculation that is presented as fact because it represents the wants of the one writing are a bit less well received, however.).

I think the 80D was already the jump ahead in sensor tech, from the 70D, that we saw in the 5D IV. I don't expect anything revolutionary in the next generation.

I think it's unfortunate the 7D II didn't get the latest tech, but maybe it means we'll get a refresh sooner than later.

Flash problem with 5DSR

Eldar said:
Viggo said:
On a side note here Eldar;

I got an answer from Profoto and they are currently working on a fix for the "speed issue" with the 1dx2, not a word about the 6d and 5dsr. But maybe they would all work when they create a fix for the 1d. Apperantly there is a slowing down of the cameras processor when a flash(accessory) is placed in the hot shoe.
Since it works with Canon's remote and flash, I have some difficulty accepting that explanation.

Yeah, I figured they meant OUR flash accessory, but didn't use that many words, lol. As long as it gets fixed I'm happy. Tried to shoot last night, but I just get closed eyes and weird expressions because it doesn't release the shutter....
