Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II AF really that bad?

Would f/1.4 really be that much of a bokeh trade off
Have a look here:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-85mm-f-1.2-L-II-USM-Lens-Review.aspx
Scroll down 2/3 of the way to the picture of the girl beside the fence, with the green background.
Hover over the fstops to see the effect on bokeh.

Thanks AJ. It doesn't look like much of a difference to me. Might just have to wait on the updated version that will probably have the BR coating too.

Canon EOS-1D X Mark II AF Setting Guidebook Now Available

Valvebounce said:
Hi DominoDude.
Ok I just downloaded both, this new one does take about 5 or 6 times as long to download as the older one, but I know that could just be down to the server it is on. I'm doing it on an iPad and have no idea if it is possible to see the file size but as far as I can tell they are both the same, both 148 pages and comparing several random pages they tally, the only thing I thought is perhaps the illustrations are higher resolution, this might account for the additional size.

Cheers, Graham.

What!?!?
My first download months ago came in a little short of 12MB, this is supposedly 100MB. That's one sizeable PDF! I have a full IBM WebSphere installation guide that is nothing near 100MB in size...

Is this the same document as the first one, or has anything been added? Won't download it just for fun.

Superb, Graham! Thanks
I'll stay off it then.

Let's see some great shots taken with old, cheap gear!

Indoor sports usually needs the best performing gear. I'm currently shooting an ATP250 tennis tournament with gear less than 1/10 of the cost of the price of the usual gear around.
The usual gear that it's being used is 1D X II with 70-200 2.8 L II + 300 2.8L IS.
I'm using 1D mk IV with old 200 2.8L (with some fungus inside).

Example crops from JPEG, only contrast added.
Quite impressive.

Canon Showcases 2/3" Global Shutter Image Sensor at ISSCC 2017

hne said:
So why would Canon invest heavily in prototyping serious video features with prototypes at a sensor size they aren't using? Are we seeing the first signs of Canon developing broadcast cameras?

Canon has recently released other special purpose sensors (like the ISO 4M one) that they primarily appear to be selling to other manufacturers instead of building cameras around them themselves. This could be another one.

EF-M 22 f/2 - sky phenomenon or bug?

Meanwhile I found the rot cause.

Lately I repeated a series of photos at the same location with nearly the same environmental conditons with different f-values in 1 stop increments from f/2 to f/11.
I also varied the different possibilities for in camera lens correction.

The problem occured only with the photos taken with f/11 independently from the in camera lens correction settings.

the fault was my automatically applied lens correction preset during lightroom import.
When I import the photos without the lens correction from LR I don't see those circles.
So it seems to be a problem with the lens correction profile for the 22mm lens in LR espacially with photos taken with f/11.

kind regards
Frank

Sigma 35 Art vs. Tamron 35 or 45?

jd7 said:
Hi Cory

Glad to hear your 35 Art is working well for you.

For what it may be worth, I had the Canon 35 f/2 IS for a couple of years before switching to the 35 Art. I had sworn off third party lenses after a couple of not-so-good experiences, and I like how small and light the 35 f/2 IS is. However, after disregarding the Sigma because it was third party and because it was larger and heavier, I eventually got a chance to try out the 35 Art over a couple of days. Well, I bought a copy within the week, and the Canon went up for sale!

My buddy owns the 35 f/2 IS and it's a great lens. However there is just something about the draw and render of the Sigma 35 Art at f/1.4 that I can't shake... I just absolutely love the look/feel I get from this lens. Heck even just "boring" shots around the house look that much better. Anyway, I have owned the Sigma 35mm Art for about 18 months now and it is by far my favorite lens to shoot with on my 6D.

As far as AF??? I only use the center point on my 6D and it required zero AFMA. I do own the dock but never really mucked with it other then to verify the fw was up to date. AF is dead accurate, but a bit slower then my 85mm, 135mm, and even the 70-200mm. In good light it performs very well and any slowness compared to Canon's fastest focusing lenses is nearly negligible. However in lower light the camera and lens are not as in sync on the whole feedback algorithm and it does seem to take an extra hiccup to lock in focus.

Anyway, can only speak of my experience with the Sigma (have not shot the new Tamron 35mm yet) but reiterating... It's my favorite EF mount lens I own.

Tamron Announces the 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II VC HLD

people tend to jump to conclusions way to fast how are you so sure it will have focus problems?
lets wait and see what the iq is like and how the af performs and then judge if 500$ is a fair price
and btw dont say that canon apsc lenses are so cheap think about the 60mm macro-400$
17-55mm f2.8-770$ 15-85mm-800$ and even the 10-22mm still goes on ebey for 300-450$

Any chance for a 7D Mark 'II+'?

..But a sensor update is very reasonable and doesn't seem like it would require a complete redesign or some massive 5 year product development cycle...

The 7D2 is almost the perfect APS-C machine...Its only weakness is the sensor compared to the competition..

Except that the difference in the 80D and 7DII sensor really only affects base ISO. At higher ISOs, where most 7DII users are likely to be shooting, the 7DII is at or close to both the 80D and the 500D. I believe Canon will wait until it can unveil a new sensor that actually improves upon performance at the ISOs that most 7DII shooters need.

80D can be even better than it is, 7D2 has the advantage of more advanced processing which is why it is very close despite an old technology sensor. D500 has an edge for sure.

It's the same thing Nikon does between the D3x00, D5x00 and D7x00 lines...processing leads to IQ advantages of the higher line camera, even though the sensors are basically identical. There's a lot of talk about sensors, but the processing is a big part of what you get. Different manufacturers can get different results from the same sensor. We've seen this in the industry before.

I'm thinking an 80D or slightly updated sensor in the 7D3 with the processing it has will be fantastic and finally match (maybe not surpass) the Nikon/Sony competitors.

Figure, the 7D2 sensor, while a big improvement for Canon at the time...was not at all the best APS-C sensor on the market when it was released. Now, nearly 3 years later - it is really showing its age. It's a different thing to be the best, cutting edge technology sensor on day 1. Because that can carry longer.

can I use my pl lens on my camera?

I assume that you are asking if the lens will mount to the camera using a Arri PL to EOS adapter?

It should mount, but mirror clearance needs to be double checked, one of the video forums would be a better place too ask. As long as the lens or adapter does not protrude into the mirror box, it will be ok.

I expect the lens is not FF, so you probably will not get full coverage of the frame, or the edges and corners will be poor.

Canon EOS M6 Coming This Month.

-pekr- said:
Is it possible following site has photos of a real M6? Date is recent, but not sure how old is that. Well, as for me, I don't like leather nor old rangefinder look. Well, maybe it just needs to grow on me, but so far I like design of M10 or G7X, combined with Red rings here or there more ...

http://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/first-images-new-canon-eos-m6/

Yep. Nokishi.ta leaked everything last night, and then Digicame did the same. A new thread is going over the details now. We only have pictures so far, but it looks a lot the M3 size-wise. (See the CR homepage)

Sigma 85 Art is tested by Roger

Larsskv said:
The resolution, bokeh and AF seems to be strong points for the Sigma. It seems like a very impressive lens. What I am curious about is how it compares against the 85LII. The 85LII has a certain look to it's images that is amazing, but hard to describe, but I'll try. In addition to being sharp, contrasty (from f2), great color and beautiful bokeh, the 85LII produces (a feeling of) depth to its images, that I don't see in other lenses. I have looked for it in the Otus 85 (online images) and I don't think the Otus produces the same kind of depth/3D feeling.

I think this depth quality is usually easier to find in pictures taken with medium format cameras.

If the Sigma competes with the 85LII in that area as well, I might consider adding the Sigma to my kit.

They all are different, but each is capable to produce great results.
Otus: https://www.flickr.com/photos/maximenco/15785379329/in/photostream/lightbox/
Sigma: https://www.flickr.com/photos/omproject/31731655622/in/photostream/lightbox/
Canon: https://www.flickr.com/photos/omproject/30080985291/in/photostream/lightbox/
Batis: https://www.flickr.com/photos/omproject/27117654212/in/photostream/lightbox/

IMO processing makes more difference than the optics :) A good thing about the Otus - it doesn't require any corrections, except of vignetting. Also contrast is huge wide open.

Samyang Announce the XEEN 20mm T1.9 Cinema Lens

not sure if all realise from the above much cheaper comments but these are their main cine line and usually around £1500 price which admittedly is cheap for cine lens. They are not the other pseudo cine lenses they do which are just their stills line model but with declicked aperture ring and focus ring has gear ring on instead. If you're in it for video and on a tight budget they are worth looking at but for stills there is a lot of other great lenses in that price range where things like slight breathing and so on wont affect you so much.

Sony: new 100mm f/2.8 G Master lens: no macro, but it's APO

I'm wondering what is the actual T-stop? The bigger A-mount brother 135 STF has a T-stop of 4.5.

Edit: found @ DPR - it's 5.6! https://www.dpreview.com/news/5917677326/sony-announces-100mm-f2-8-g-master-and-fe-85mm-f1-8
I was looking at the 135 STF a while ago, but the only benefit I saw was the smooth bokeh balls (no edge basically). But I got the 135 1.8 instead and it was a much better choice.
Compared to a regular 135mm f/2 lens it's one F-stop difference (ignoring the T-stops), but speaking of 100mm, the new Nikon 105/1.4 has 2 F-stops and ~4 T-stops advantage. There is another 105/2 STF lens made by a Chinese company Laowa a year or two ago that offers T3.2 and priced 2.5 times cheaper, but MF only...

It looks like these may still be at a rumour level:

Yeah. It's CW3 which is approximately equal in reliability to CR0...
