Kodak Brings Back a Classic with EKTACHROME Film

Yes but how many of them offer dual film slots? You know, the must have feature demanded in even a 6D MkII nowadays.

Well, film has less inclination to die in the middle of a shooting... especially since you can't really reuse it - just in some situations you needed to learn to change film quickly - the worst were very noisy rewinder engines when it was automated. Some older camera used a take-up spool which didn't need rewinding.

But someone patented the "dual film camera" in 1951: https://www.google.com/patents/US2546540

May that's because Canon never made a dual film camera :D

I had a lot more film 'issues' than I have ever had with digital, even on;y using one slot in a two card slot camera.

I well remember doing the film dance of sending rolls from the same shoot in different batches so they never all went through the machines together in case there was a roller causing scratches.

Small Lighting Setup - Does CRI Matter? (LED vs CFL)

I have two setups, a light table with twelve T8 CRI 98 tubes, and in a different room, two softboxes with 4 CFL's in each. Two 85 watt and two 65 watt because thats all that will fit.

Flicker has not been a issue because the frequency of the CFL's is very high, so the phosphors do not have time to dim muuch. This is a cheap setup, but it works for my product photography. They are rated at cri 90, I'd like to have higher, but there were lots of factors to balance.

Tamron Issues Firmware Update for 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III VC

I had to get a Tamron 70-200 updated a few months ago. Basically plan on about $35-40 to ship to them with insurance and about a week before you get the lens back. You can pay $5 or so for them to require signature on return delivery and that did expedite shipping I believe.

Issues like this (and lack of in-camera lens corrections, especially for video) really make me think twice about third party lenses. It's great they support and offer a firmware update, but they need to figure out a way for people to do this at home with a dock, or have an upgrade plan to make existing lenses compatible with their dock. They do offer the "TAP-in" console dock, but lens compatibility is extremely limited. Other manufacturers are now offering (or considering) USB direct on lenses.

Latest 2016 Camera Sales Data from Japan - BCNRanking

Re: Canon #2 in mirrorless in Japan. BCN Rankings

Sony needs to find a way to sell more lens.

Maybe that's what the new A99 is about.

It is unclear whether their mirrorless platform (e-mount) is appropriate for long lenses, perhaps hence the vast array of standard focal lengths with scarce options above 100mm. You can't go on selling 35-85mm lenses forever, and if your platform sucks with supertele, you have to revive or introduce a different platform to sell supertele.

DXO tests the Tamron 85mm f/1.8 VC

Overlooked in the midst of all of this DXO folly is how well the Tamron performed. People (and myself) were shocked at how well it did in comparison with the new Sigma 85 ART in my tests. I got accused of any number of things by Sigma loyalists because of it.

The Sigma is sharper, to be sure, but not by much. It's main advantage is from f/1.4 (obviously) to f/2.8. The Tamron is actually the sharper, more contrasty lens stopped down, and with far less CA. I felt like the Sigma was the more nuanced performer in the studio (it handled light transitions with more aplomb), but the Tamron 85 is a surprisingly good lens. Some people write it off because it is "only" f/1.8, but that's a mistake. In many ways I think it is the most versatile and balanced of the 85 options available, though the 85L II has the most special rendering and the 85 ART is the best studio lens. And the Otus 85 is simply incredible. I'd love to own it - if only Canon's better bodies were more MF friendly. I don't enjoy focus via Live View.

I like using MF glass on the 6D with an EG-S matte screen, but I miss the higher resolution of the 5DIV or 5DsR.

[General Topic]: Two bodies vs One

Hi Don.
Damn that is bad luck, have you worked out what annoyed you the most, failing during a wedding or failing the day after the warranty ran out?
Did you have the camera repaired, and if so did you get any kind of break for the fact that it was only one day out of warranty or were they completely inflexible about it, some companies would sooner have the good will than the money, :) some vice versa! >:( :'(
The repair was free....

Failing at a wedding was what annoyed me, but I was second shooter doing crowd and family shots so I was "nice to have" and not critical... and it only cost me about 15 seconds from the realization of it dying to being back in option.

Best lens options for safari in private game reserve

We'll be travelling to southern Africa this year for a trip I've wanted to do my entire life. The safari part of the vacation (half will be spent exploring the Western Cape) will take place at Tintswalo Lodge in the Manyeleti, South Africa and Mashatu, just across the border in Botswana. Both are private game reserves and at one of them, we'll have our own private vehicle. At the other, vehicles are limited to 6 people and we're 4 - so it'll be almost private.

For cameras, I currently own a 1Dx2 and plan to rent a 5d4 to use as a backup camera. My main debate comes to lenses. Due to weight restrictions, I can take only one big telephoto. For those who have been on safaris, which of the following options would be better?

a) 200-400/1.4x on 1Dx2. 70-200/2.8 II on 5d4.
b) 600/4 II on 1Dx2, 100-400 II on 5d4

Thank you for your help.

70-200 F/4 IS repair cost

I researched and came across this post months ago when my 85 1.8 had a manual focus slip problem. I just adjusted the USM retaining ring (silver) a bit and it worked. I pushed the ring a bit (may be less than 1cm) clockwise to tighten it up and the manual focus ring became fully engaged.

The original loctite seemed to have cracked and failed to keep the retaining ring in position. I adjusted the tension of the ring according to loctite marks.

Anamorphic / Letterbox capture of single stills with DSLR?

cayenne said:
Yes..but you are going to be losing image that way...with a true anamorphic lens or adapter, you are getting the full image squeezed, and then when you de-squeeze...you'll have the full image.

I might suggest you *rent* either an adaptor or anamorphic lens and give it a try for real...?

HTH,

C

Totally okay with throwing out data. This is an experiment just to see if I enjoy composing photos under this new aspect ratio constraint.

As far as renting goes, that's certainly on the table. But for now, I'll work the terrible DIY angle to confirm I enjoy composing shots this way and then I'd logically rent some proper hardware next.

Someone else was making some focusing screen suggestions, and even if I could do that with my 5D3, I don't want to cripple my only FF body to tinker like this, so I'd strongly prefer a lens or filter-based solution.

But again: let me tinker, let me see if I like it, and then I'll check back in.

Another Mention of Big White Lens Revisions [CR1]

Currently, I'm thinking about keeping the 300 and adding a 500/f4 II or 600 f/4 II.
This is my story almost exactly, and I went for the 500. No regrets at all.
Maiaibing said:
I've been considering adding one of these to my 300mm f/2.8 IS L II myself later this year and have decided that if applicable I'll go for the 500mm because I can see myself carrying and shooting it from a sling. Not so with the 600mm. This alone would make me use it less. Rather then go with 500mm + 1.4x when needed.

I rented both the 500 II and 600 II for weekends last fall and came away with great pictures from both. Sure, I liked the extra reach of the 600, but being tethered to a tripod and gimbal is very limiting. My attempts to hand hold the 600 were not very successful and I certainly wouldn't want to hike very far with one.

I'm thinking I'll add a 500 before the spring migration for Sand Hill cranes (mid March). My wife suggested that maybe I consider selling my 300 to help fund the 500, but I convinced her and myself that I will still use it extensively after adding the 500.

300mm f/2.8L IS vs 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II

You will enjoy the 100-400II....you would also have enjoyed the 300 but at this point in time anyone who likes reach should save up for the 400DOII and not buy the 300 IMHO.

Because you have the 1DX2 I would highly recommend the 1.4TCIII on the 100-400II. The f/8 AF is amazingly good on the 1DX2 and feels just like you are shooting an f/5.6 lens. Also the 1DX2 ISO performance can handle the 1 stop of light loss.

Is this you in the Shanghai smogscape?

Fortunately Shanghai is not always smoggy, at least it was clear when I was there in 2015 :) Here's some pano's I processed recently. Almost done editing pics from my China trip more than a year later...

Got some strong magnets there! ;D :o

Canon EOS 77D Coming Soon [CR2]

Thaikon said:
Revamp the whole naming scheme:

Budget FF --> 6D Series
Midrange FF --> 5D Series
High Res FF --> 3D Series (replaces 5Ds/R)
Flagship FF --> 1D Series

3D is poor optics for the company -- implies resolution is of higher prestige / price / importance than all-purpose functionality.

Also, when Canon finally offers a 1DXs -- a high MP sensor put in a 1DX body -- the 's' will finally fit. We'd have an all-arounder and high res body for both the gripped/1D feature set and ungripped/5D feature set camps.

Any updates on any Tamron patents?

For every 100 patents or so, you see one that is used in a product. A patent definitely does not mean the invention will ever be produced. You can search for Tamron Patents to see what they are doing, I do not see them being listed unless they seem interesting.

You can see a summary count through 2015 here. Tamron is way down the list, Canon is at the top.

New EOS M Camera Coming in February [CR3]

Ok...well, I am hoping for an M5 features (mostly the sensor and Digic 7) in an M3 form factor. The M3 is older than the M10, but I would think they would let the M5 stand alone with those features for a little while, so we will see.

On another note, which bags/backpacks do people like for mirrorless systems? I have the M3, 18-55, 11-22, 28 macro and 22 f/2.

Why not a dumbed down M5?

What feature would be lost to dumb it down?

To me, the primary thing that is superfluous is the EVF. My current M3 is my secondary camera that I have for its smaller size and lower weight while still having an optional EVF when I want one. But I am shooting the M3 with just the LCD most of the time. So, what I want are the Digic 7 (faster processing/focusing), DPAF (faster focusing), 7-9 fps (not critical, but why not?) from the M5 in the M3 form factor (size/weight).

May seem odd, as they are both smaller than a full frame body. But the M3 is already pushing the size I would like and I hardly ever use the EVF.

totally agree. I have the EVF as a matter of fact, i have two of them. I hardly ever find the need for them. when i do use the EVF I use it articulated.

See my problem with the M5?;)

canon's back LCD screens are just that good for most use cases.

I want basically what you listed there, plus much faster AEB.
