Rogue FlashBender 2 - XL Pro question of weight

I have one and it is my favorite modifier in tight space, especially when I need to put it against a wall (simulating a wall lamp).
Yes, a speedlite can carry it. Both my 430EX II and Yongnuo have no trouble carrying it.
Yes, you can tilt it. don't expect it to stay strongly straight though. It bends a bit but doesn't bother at all.
My suggestion, though, is to use an umbrella holder as the steps on a speedlite tilting is too big and getting the right angle is sometimes impossible.
I mean something similar to this:

Sectioned Lenses

TAF said:
Hello All;

I recently returned from the CES in Las Vegas, where one of my activities was exploring the Canon booth.

Attached for your enjoyment are photos of two of their lenses (the 200-400 f4 w/1.4x and an united IS lenses) that were 'ninja'd' so you can see the internal construction.

(Or maybe they are the new budget version, half now, half later.)

Enjoy.

(sadly taken with my iPhone)

At last, a 200-400 light enough to carry and hand hold.

The Leica M10 is Coming January 18

HTML:
Leica is set to announce their next digital rangefinder, the Leica M10 on January 18, 2017. Photo Rumors has put together a list of what we can expect from the new camera.</p>
<p>On the surface, it looks like they’ve made the camera smaller and simplified the button layout.</p>
<p>One interesting omission in features is that there is no video capabilities. We’re not surprised, as I doubt a lot of people shot video with their M240 and we assume the omission is a compromise they had to make to shrink the size of the body.</p>
<p>I’m a big fan of the M system, though I’ve come to realize I like autofocus and use the Leica Q instead.</p>

New Years Wish

A high quality jack of all trades stills camera for the wannabe photographers amongst us without the pandering to the wannbe film makers market that comes in at a decent price instead of the ridiculous 5k that the 5dmk4 costs. I know it won't happen but it would be nice. For me it would be around the 25mp, 7fps, basic 1080p video, fixed screen without touch capability to save costs, decent but not the ultimate build quality and good autofocus(80d style) all priced around the 2500-3000 mark?

Sigma to Announce 24-70mm f/2.8 Art Ahead of CP+ Next Month? [CR2]

Point 2: I'm not sure the Sigma 24-70 will do overly well if it doesn't do more than just hit the sharpness out of the park. Yes, it can be sharper than the Canon 20-17 II. I expect it will be. But the Canon model has been drifting down in price here in the US to be a few tens of percent to what you'd expect to pay for the upcoming Sigma. The Art series has avoided OS and it has avoided weather sealing. If the new zoom has both, it'll be a home run lens. If it does neither, it'll be just something to fill out the range with. I am a big Sigma fan, but I have low expectations on this. Owned the Tamron for the VC in that range, but went to primes for sharpness.

I'm just not quite sure why Sigma would go after Canon's more wildly successful zooms: the 24-70 2.8 (rumored) and the 70-200 2.8 (no rumor, but perhaps someday?).

Both are very sharp, and though Sigma can even outresolve those if they commit to it, the AF on those two Canon lenses (speed, consistency, etc.), build quality and handling is simply phenomenal. These are staple first-choice tools for working professionals. Besides sharpness, Sigma can only really offer a less expensive instrument, or in the case of a 24-70, they could offer IS.

Surely, continuing to pick off much lower hanging fruit would continue their longer-term 'hearts and minds' campaign of improving over time. Make a killer 135 prime, 200 prime, inexpensive 400 5.6 with IS, the great coma-free + fast + wide astro lens that no one seems to be able to make, etc.

I fully recognize the market-size advantage of a pro zoom, but should this 24-70 2.8 IS materialize, Sigma would be picking a fight where Canon is the most determined to succeed. Doesn't seem wise to me.

Don't forget that Sigma offers lenses in other then Canon mount.

Having used the atrocious sigma 24-70mm 2.8 years ago, even if sigma isn't competing with canon, they need to refresh this lens. I tried using the sigma 35 1.4 and that lens is killer. I'm not too sure why people talk about AF inconsistency with the sigmas so much - in reference to their global vision lenses (contemporary, art, sport). I did bash on sigma a ton before, but that's their old lineup - they are atrocious. With the newer lineup, there might be a LITTLE more hunting but if you're generous with your skills as a photographer, those decrease dramatically. I feel that with some of my canon lenses, I can be a little careless and it's forgiving. Absolutely love my 150-600. The price point, build, IQ, etc.. bang for your buck and more. I'm excited to see sigma coming out with an update that has been long in waiting - regardless of the specs and details.

Vignetting test with new EF 16-35 F/4L IS and Lee Filter Holder

I know this thread is a couple years old, but can anyone tell me if you get vignetting at 16mm with the Lee holder setup with ONE slot, and the 105 ring with a circular polarizer.

Thanks.

Take a look back at my post on page 1. With B+W's ultrawide 105mm KSM polarizer, a 007M protective filter, and a Lee filter holder with one slot, there's no vignetting at 16mm. Happy shooting!

Ah yes, I forgot you bought the extra-wide. That effectively takes the CPL out of the equation for vignetting, right? I'd imagine you'd see the same vignetting with that as you would with an empty CPL ring.

'smart' TS-E adapter patent?

Tilt shift lens with IS? What would be the point?

It's just part of the range of things they often include in patents - shows it working with any lens. Patents often show a lot of related stuff 'just because'.

Then again I use TS-E lenses all the time, quite often hand held ... yes heresy, I know;-)

I've seen a friend shoot video with a TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II attached to a 5DmkII (hand holding the gear walking after whatever it is he was shooting) because he liked the colors.

It's all good, but I would be surprised if the target audience is large enough for Canon to add IS in those lenses.

Canon EOS System Celebrates 30th Anniversary

They lead a falling market, overall they too have seen falls in volume & profitability and innovation sometime radical is the only way to reverse a trend. As the trend shows currently DSLR sales are heading below peak SLR sales that's definitely not progress.

.....

They just want good easy photos..

They could do all that (and more) but the reality is that the average-joe consumer is not going to buy a bigger, bulkier, and much-more-expensive camera when their iPhone does just fine. I have zero problem that Canon is focusing on the enthusiast-professional market since those are the folks that will spend the money instead of trying to entice consumers that are tighter with their wallets.

This discussion reminded me of an article I saw a number of years ago looking at camera production over a period of 60 to 70 years: https://petapixel.com/2014/12/15/chart-shows-badly-digital-camera-sales-getting-hammered-smartphones/

There does seem to be some credibility in the argument that the growth in camera sales in the early 2000s was a spike. The data in the article only does to 2014, but there is certainly a view that camera production could be falling back to the pre-2000 trend (give or take a couple of anomalies).
Aside from the fact that most people are not interested in cameras, those of us who really interested in cameras are possibly not replacing them as quickly anymore as we were in the early 2000s (the technology has matured).

Samyang 14mm 2.4 reviews, but where to buy

And it is Rokinon, not Samyang; what is the difference?

They're the same company - just different names. I also ordered the Rokinon 14/2.4 on 12/30. I have the Rokinon 24/1.4 and it works great for night photography but horribly for anything else. I'm hoping the 14/2.4 outperforms it in both areas.

Nice shot - taken with the 24mm 1.4? Was it cropped?

Thanks! Not cropped.

Thanks, Joseph. Motorized tracking (25 sec. exposure, no star trails)? If so, which tracking device?

24-105mm Mk II - lens profile & your experience

I have travelled a lot in the last weeks and shot a few thousand pics, most with the 5DIV and the 24-105 II.

My probelm: missing lens profile for Lightroom. How long will it take that an Camera raw/lightroom update will come?

My experience with this combo: The 5D IV is worth the money, even if the body is not stellar as some reviews mentioned. It is an superb working horse. Iso 4000, 1/40, f 105mm almost dark, and the shot is still viewable...
The 24-105mm II is (IMO) better than the MK 1, but still lacks in the edges (sharpness and CA). At the outer 25% on each side, the sharpness lacks. Visibly. Heavy CAs are also here. Maybe an better Lightroom profile will help.
My way will be an updated 24-xx L 2.8... if it is on the market. I need an azoom lens, as my old shoulders recognize each gram of weight on them.

What's your experience buying refurbished from Canon Direct USA?

My experience was a disaster and is still going on. I ordered a 28-105 refurbished lens on 12-10 and immediately got an email from canon thanking me for my order and telling me they would notify me when it shipped. I also immediately got an email showing an hold to my paypal account for the purchase. On 12-17 I called to check and see when this would ship as this was a Christmas present. I was told that the order could not be filled as there was not enough stock (yet I see here and in other forums that if this is not stock it will show in the screen where I purchased it). I was further told that they were not going to notify me. I had not received any notice that there was an issue, I just randomly decided to call. I was also told there was no raincheck; just no lens, no notification, and nothing I could do. SOL.

So a ordered one from 42nd St photo and had it the next day, brand new for the same price delivered! I know it is 'grey market' but it is a canon lens same as I would have received from Canon and they actually delivered it.

I also and still struggling to get the amount released from my pay pal account even though Canon has a recorded call where I asked for them to release the hold as they were not going to ship.

Too bad I didn't start with NIKON.

I'll give it another try, but my fingers keep using the same combo as on the 5DIII. Plus it is right there by my cheek...

Point is, "fantastic addition" seems a little bit over the top. Just another button that only has a few assignment choices.

yes give it another try, it took me a while also, but once mastered its great, every pro body should have it ;)

Pros/cons Hejnar focusing rails?

I recently purchased a old Minolta bellows with tilt-shift capabilities, and the ability to use a cable release to stop down and open the aperture. I'd like a rail that allows me to move the whole assembly forward or back, and a better lens. I might just buy a Olympus OM bellows unit and try it. Its easy to adapt om to my camera, and I have numerous om lenses. I'd miss the remote aperture control though.

I just checked, the Olympus unit does have a aperture remote.

Visionaries Welcome- unless they shoot 4K :)

yes, because the small RX100's really shoot for more than a few minutes of 4K at a time before they overheat.

totally makes sense to add in 4K into an even smaller camera.

Good grief.
Yes, you're right- it makes perfect sense since they are competing for people's iPhone dollars. And as people here have noted, iPhones have 4K video. And yes, I am taking note of your sarcasm and flipping it ;)
I honestly don't get the obsession with consumer 4K - especially in a camera of this size. When viewing videos on a small screen like a phone or on my iPad Mini, 1080p is more than good enough. I often have to reduce the quality to 480p due to insufficient bandwidth and even then it still looks just as good on a small screen. 4K should be left to big budget cinema films, not YouTube cat videos.

So, on that note, I don't get the obsession with high-resolution stills on a camera of this size. Why would anyone need 5472 x 3648 stills when viewing on a small screen like an iPhone or an iPad mini? 1080 resolution stills are good enough. After all, Instagram is only 1080 x 1080. Why would a camera of this size need to shoot pictures in anything higher? ;)

Oh, yes- it's because many people do view stills AND watch video on 4K monitors, 5K iMacs, 2880 x 1800 MacBook Pro Retina screens, etc., and on YouTube, which also accepts 4K UHD video. And since iPhones already shoot 4K video (have for 2 years) and stills at 12MP, and since Canon P&S cameras have to compete with iPhone dollars (as per the original point)...well, you get the picture, right? No pun intended...

Refurbished Canon lenses

ethanz said:
If you buy a refurbished lens and wish to sell it later, does it effect resale value compared to selling a lens you bought new?

A little bit, but usually less than the savings you realized when buying refurbished in the first place. Some would prefer a retail box, but I'd rather have the ability to send it in if the 1-year warranty isn't up.

Can someone explain the Canon 50mmL f/1.2 "backfocus problem" ?

Hi there, I am unable to create my own threads yet, probably due to a lack of posts, but my topic would have echo'd this thread's very closely...

I just got the 50mm f/1.2 L yesterday and I am having some severe back-focusing issues. I've confirmed with multiple shots at the wide open aperture of f/1.2 of a ruler. In each shot, the number and lines behind the one I tried focusing on with spot AF were sharper and had better contrast. I'd really like to keep this lens and use it, but I am worried about such a glaring problem, so many people here are saying it should only happen at narrower apertures, but it's happening, and blatantly so, at 1.2 for me. Help!

AFMA. It should be set to hit the target accurately wide open using the center point. Some camera bodies don't have AFMA, at which point the lens and body should be sent in to be recalibrated.

Where and to whom at Canon do you send your camera and lenses in to be calibrated?
How much does it cost and how long does it take?

TIA,

cayenne

Canon. I've never done it personally, although I came close. I had a 24L II that wasn't focusing right, and they fixed it (under warranty). If that didn't work, then I would have had to send in the body as well. I'm guessing that the cost would be a couple hundred USD or more, which is one reason why I avoid bodies that don't have AFMA. It also explained why my 20D + 17-55 f/2.8 IS never was quite right. There was no AFMA on the 20D, so I took more shots to compensate for it. Then I tried a friend's 7D with AFMA dialed in, and I suddenly, the 17-55 shots looked a lot better.

Does price speak louder than rumors?

Maiaibing said:

And yen/dollar trade, too. With a rising dollar and falling yen, I've noticed that most camera lenses prices are steady or falling. It is a good time to have unencumbered dollars.

Was looking at prices for the 500mm f/4 IS L II and saw that its a lot cheaper in Tokyo than New York right now @~6.950$. For a long time US had the best Canon lens prices, but that position is eroding more and more (when I lived in Japan I bought my Canon lenses in the US!). Will pick the the 500mm f/4 IS L II up in Japan if I decide to get one later this year (pending where I'm moving to next).

That large a price disparity !! A trip to Japan may be in the cards but then I need to bring it home and deal w/ customs and Canon. Both can be unpleasant to deal with.

Better stay home I guess
