moving to 5d MK IV

hi all
i decide to share with all of you my past experience with Sony a7r II , one year ago i sold my 5d MK III and went to Sony a7 II then a7r II and i still keep my canon glasses .
today i sold my Sony camera after may be 6 month for many reasons :
if really you plan to move to Sony system you have to move to whole system with lenses other wise it's kinda useless and you will not enjoy most of features .
another point also it's not really that solid camera and i experience 2 times problem while shooting in snow plus some issues of compatibly even i buy the original grip and 3 original battery still i have to restart the camera and not only me its normal issues happen with a lot of Sony users .
focus system not that easy to deal with and what ever you have expensive adapter still you will have some problems i have to shoot 5 times to make sure my pics in right focus
i may do wrong and some of my friends told me that you are crazy ;D but am quite sure that i will not go wrong with canon 5d mk IV .
sony is good camera but may be i don't like it personally ...... your opinion guys about this moving is highly appreciated .
8) 8) 8) 8)

I´m writing in poor English too. I just can use about 2/3 of my brain and the impaired region is the Broca and Wernicke area.
But back to the topic:
In my family there are relatives working for sony, so they own a lot of their stuff. But my experience with the 7RII is quite the same. The service is awful and expensive, Af lacks and the capacity of the battery is a hoax.
But it produces really great shots if you know how to use it.
The 5DIV is more stable and has an excellent service from CPS. And so on and so on.... Overall I like the 5DIV it is an excellent workhorse for a lot of different situations. My personal experience (with the gear I owne/owned): My maximum used Isos are 3200 with the 5DIV/6D and 800 with the 7DII, 1 stop better than their predecessors. And if the light is quite ok and you just need an fast shutter speed, Iso 6400 will produce good images.

If possible, meet an someone who owns an 5DIV or join an Canon workshop where you are able to work with the 5DIV and compare it. If you post your country or reagion where you live, maybe an CR member can help you.

Upcoming Canon Product Certification Information

I hope that 77D is replacement for 100D.

It's not.
So is Canon moving the 760D under XXD in terms of features and ergonomics while the 800D keeping the traditional XXXD ergonomics. Also I am wondering how long before the 100D gets replacement, I really loved it for its size and weight and was prefect camera to carry on trips at higher elevation when packing weight is of concern.

Favorite Focal Length/Aperture For Portrait

300mm is also a excellent focal length. The issue is space enough to use a 300mm lens.

Longer focal lengths tend to shorten noses and facial feature which tends to be more flattering. Wide angles are the opposite. Any of the 85-300 focal lengths are fine. Its more of a pick the one that does what you need. If you want full body, for example, I'd tend to go 85, but have used 135 as well.

+1 Exactly--there is no "one size fits all." The 70-200mm is so great because it allows changing focal length for distance and the shape of a person's head. For slim subjects, 85mm works straight on, but if, as is the case with many in the West, the subject is overweight, going to a longer focal length is very important. Sometimes, even, a person who appears fit has a head that just doesn't work at certain focal lengths, so it's great to be able to show them images taken at various FL's.

Going the other way, there are some subjects that have narrow heads and long faces, and having an 85mm or even 70mm is better than going with a 135mm, for example.

But if I had to choose two primes for portraits, I'd go with 85 and 135. But if I could only have ONE lens, I'd even go with the 70-200mm f/4. Despite giving up the shallower DoF look of faster lenses, it is sharp and produces great colors, and I'd say for most portrait work where background can be controlled and one wants most of the face and body in sharp focus, it works. But the 70-200mm gives even more options with backgrounds and DoF, so, heavy as it is, I'd say it is THE portrait lens if budget allows.

Update: After sleeping on it overnight...If I had to choose one PRIME lens strictly for portraits, I'd go with the 135mm f/2. Quick, great IQ including bokeh, and does flatter most head shapes, imho. But it would not be nice iN a tight space!!!

Thanks for the advice!
Would someone create a 85-135mm f/2? :D

Patent: Canon RGBW 12 Image Sensor

Stuart said:
Apple is using 3 Sensors and a Prism That Splits Light - to save losing light in a Bayer filter. That seems neat.

I wonder when Fabs will be able to produce an array of tiny prisims that collect light and then split it to, at least, 3 different sensing locations at each microsite group.

Given a variation on DLP (digital light processing) technology, it seems like the state of the art would allow something like that now.

Eye-bombing

Not my own idea and for sure it is not new, but when I found some reports of this kind of photography I wanted to do it on my own. Eye-bombing. You place some eyes on objects in urban places and bring suddenly life to them. They somehow get a face and you bring people some joy in their everyday routine.

Some EOS M System Information [CR2]

really funny the constant bashing of Canon EF-M lens lineup. And the constant whimpering for fast primes for a *CROP SENSOR* system. It is not going to happen. Not even Canon is so stupid to make big, fat, expensive lenses for EF-M mount. EF-M lens lineup is pretty much *perfect*, especially now with 18-150 coming and a slightly higher grade EF-M 15-85 in the works (hopefully). All that's missing is a compact EF-M 85/2.4 STM IS. :)

Fast primes will come, but only if & when Canon launches FF-sensored MILC with new, native, short-flange distance EF-X mount.
EFX? what's that, how u confirm it does exist?

"EF-X" is my moniker for an (eventually coming) future Canon lens mount and native lenses for an (eventually coming) future Canon FF-sensored mirrorless camera series. Canon may well decide on some other naming convention. But the products themselves will come. Eventually. :)

Adorama's flash "Deal of the day"

I found 2 x Godox AD600BM strobes, Godox AD360IIC and Godox X1T-C trigger under the Christmas tree this morning. I thought that Santa was extra nice this Christmas! :)
It does not come with standard 7" reflector and carry case. Adorama version does.
If you are in US, there is literally no point in purchasing Godox OEM version as you do not get extra toys with your purchase and no local warranty. You, guys, should feel privileged!

$50 off the Adorama Amazon Price.

and if you get the actual godox (OEM mfgr) version, it's only 600$ vs Adorama's rebadge

The only thing paying the extra to adorama gets you is somebody else to ship it to china for repair on your behalf.

TS-E lineup: What upgrades would you like?

neuroanatomist said:
Add to your list: the 45/90mm lenses should have the ability to easily alter the relative orientation of tilt and shift like the 17/24mm lenses (i.e. being able to change it with a lever press rather than having to disassemble the lens and even then being limited to a 90° change).

Agree that a tripod ring would be nice (and nice for Canon to be able to sell a $150 accessory).

For the flying pigs file: encoders for the amount of tilt and shift applied. That would add cost and complexity and I think would necessitate additions to the EXIF data format, which means updating the firmware on all bodies, but it would be great in that it would allow RAW converters to have correction modules that account for the different magnitude and direction of vignetting/distortion/etc. that you get with shift and tilt.
Definitely added complexity :'(

The other alternative is to make it perfect corner to corner so no corrections are needed :P

AF-Assist beam from Flashgun not working in Manual mode.

Hi rfdesigner, Neuro.
It is amazing the simple things we can over look that can leave us perplexed to say the least.
It is good to have this great resource where there is easy access to people like Neuro who are so quick to offer the solution.
I hope to retain some of the things that I learn here.
Thanks folks.

Cheers, Graham.

Sigma 12-24mm f/4 ART Review

Random Orbits said:
Nice review. It would have been nice to have some points of comparison versus the Canon 11-24, which may be sigma's 12-24's most natural competitor.

That's true, but Sigma contacted me on these out of the blue and I didn't have a chance to arrange it. I was supposed to be reviewing the 24-105L II during that slot, but it got pushed back because it wasn't shipping outside of kit.

Question: Performance of 24-70 4.0 on 7DII (based on tdp and real world)

AlanF said:
Oops! I got my first 18-55 with the 300D (the first Rebel) in 2003/2004, which set me on an expensive road.

Pretty close to when I bought mine, I spotted a DPR announcement and picked one up at our local camera store. I was familiar with film SLR's and had a Nikon CP-990, so I expected that the rear LCD would have a live view, and was disappointed when it did not, since I used it for product photography and wanted to make sure of focus and composition as well as brightness before capturing the image.

When the 40D came out with Live View, I sold my 6 month old 30D and bought one. It paid for itself in time saved taking multiple shots until everything was how I wanted it.

How does Canon 24-105 v1 compare to Sigma 24-105 f4 Art lens?

LesC said:

I finally got my new canon 24-105mm F4 lens it looks like any other new lens and seems a little basic - I put the lens on my CANON 5D1V and started to shoot some pictures at a 30th of a second - pics were pin sharp - I then tried 15th of a second again pin sharp so finally I went for a fifth of a second - pin sharp !! I never went any lower just thought its so unreal as I never shoot lest than 1/30th of a second hand held - this lens is the most amazing lens I have ever owned in my life time.

Good to hear a positive review; I still intend to pick one up after Christmas :)

Had the chance to quickly compare resolution of the two canons, v1 vs v2, in a showroom. It was only one lens of each and some indoor shooting. Results were close. On the longer end, v2 was a bit sharper than v1, visible when enlarged on screen. Also IS enabled (at least) one more stop.

More Canon EOS M5 Images & Specifications

I received the M5 15-45 kit and the 18-150 lens from B&H earlier this week and my preliminary impressions are very favorable. The M5 is a big improvement over my M3, particularly the faster focussing and the continuous shooting capabilities. The build quality seems higher as well. However I have also accidentally changed the back dial (ISO), have to get used to the compact design. I need to use it so more before I can comment on the lenses but so far so good.

Filter claims to reduce light pollution for astro

I'd like to hear jrista's take on this. It looks like a colour shift as folks have said. What strikes me about it is the possibility of getting city lights AND the Milky Way in the same shot- if might prevent the city from being so blown out as to be beyond the reach of PP, while still preserving some detail of the MW.
