Lenses that you want Canon to release next

I'm hoping for a 24-105 "L" III.

Not exactly my thought after reading the incoming data about the mark ii - because the ii will last 5 years or more before we will see a mark iii version ...

While waiting for this one I would like to see an EF 4.0 / 40-200 L IS USM with brilliant IQ and ergonomics (like 70-200)... and if it starts at 50 mm I would take it in a heartbeat. Thinking of two bodies - one with 16-35 + 40/50-200 for landscape, people, towns, nature, beach, ....

Opinions: bellows for M39/M42 lenses with 5D? good bad ugly?

Please be sure to post your photos!

Will take a bit longer. Got the Nikon EL 80/5.6 for $40 off eBay. The Baader UV 2" is around $400, got that. The EL80 has a strange filter thread of 34.5 mm, but found an adapter for 34.5 to 48 of the Baader for $28 from Russia (Grimes wants around $80). I can get ~infinity focus with the Kenko 12 and 20 mm, so I need around 32 mm of extension for infinity. Focus shift in UV apparently is minimal with the EL80. Ordered a M42 focusing helicoid 25–50 mm, and a M42 to EOS adapter and a M39 to M42 adapter. Still have to order the 365 nm flashlight. I think the UV LED I have is 395 nm.

Re extension, with f/5.6 on a 5D2 I run into diffraction limitation with c = 30 µm and effective f-stop of f/32 at 4.7:1. So could exploit bellows extension of up to 376 mm.

Re bellows, I just settled on a M42 type bellows for $30 with over 200 mm draw (longer than most). Price is right, and I have all the M42 adapters, and various additional extension rings, so that gives me a lot of flexibility.

The EOS EF to Graflock adapter is $350, so I don't think I will go that route, particularly because the adapter adds quite a bit of extension, so infinity focus with WA LF lenses will not be possible, so that rig could not double for extreme TS beyond Canon TS/E lenses.

Hopefully I have some initial pictures before the end of the year :-)

Patent: Canon Curved Sensor to Reduce Vignetting

Before everyone gets too excited, this is probably for a P/S camera and not a DSLR.....

Because EOS-M still uses Powershot serial numbers.

Short flange distance is the best application for this tech. If a Full Frame EOS-M ever comes out, it had better use a curved sensor.

I have a feeling that this may be the "dirty little little secret" of the EOS M. Photozone.de raises this issue in some of its EF-M lens tests. Very fast lenses, like the 85mm f1.2L are notorious for the amount of fall-off in peripheral illumination, and that is without even having the shorter flange distance that would be associated with a mirrorless design!

I have a sneaking suspicion that this is an issue which has been hampering Canon in the mirrorless space. Canon needs a way to may sensors more sensitive to light with a very oblique angle of incidence.

A curved sensor would probably also make it easier to address the issue of focal plane curvature (which was a problem with lenses like the 24-70 f/2.8L mkI). A different problem in this space is that a lot of lenses address focal plane curvature optically....

The problem is, different focal lengths require different curvatures.... This is excellent for a cell phone camera with a fixed lens, sort-of-OK on a P/S camera where you have some degree of control over the focal length, but horrendous for DSLRs and interchangeable lens mirrorless cameras where one could be using an 8mm fisheye or an 800mm lens with a 2X teleconverter... 8 to 1600 is quite a range.... or if you include second party and specialty lenses and your range goes from 4.5mm to 4000mm...

How about this: "A patent showing curved sensor development, this one deals with using a magnetic system to deform the sensor
http://www.canonrumors.com/patent-canon-continues-to-work-on-curved-sensor-technology/
Now THAT makes things interesting and greatly increases the potential!

Canon 1DX MK II - Moving the AF Point instantly

Hi Flux capacitor.
Page 445 second image icon bottom right corner, select direct access if it works anything like the 7DII (from memory, I don't have my camera handy to check exact procedure) plus a bit more info on page 453 that might help.
The menu system on current bodies once mastered is much better in my opinion, but they have grouped a lot of stuff under different headings from the previous generation, at least on the lesser bodies, I don't know which menu layout the 1Dx has.

Cheers, Graham.
Edit just seen that the issue is solved, it appears I may have a different version of the manual or I got he wrong answer.

Monochrome-only body?

I'd buy a 5D4 Monochrome. A $4,000ish price would be OK with me.

BTW Leica isn't the only one to make a B&W digital. Phase One makes the Achromatic + http://www.achromaticplus.com/Achromatic_Plus/Achromatic+.html

"The Achromatic+ digital back is a 39 million pixel camera, with a sensor that measures 49.1 x 36.8mm and a pixel size of 6.8 micron (square). Technically speaking, this is a 39 megapixel digital camera. However, because there is no bayer pattern over the sensor, and the light is not separated into colors when being recorded, each pixel is capable of receiving pure and uninterrupted information. This absolute information translates into what could be perceived as a much higher resolution image, even comparable to 80mp. The experience is beautiful, and the images spectacular."

You should be able to make impressive large B&W prints with a Canon 5D4 Monochrome file. I want one.

I'm very tempted to get this lens, I'm also very paranoid an Art version will be released a month or so after I get it...

If I am not mistaken, an Art version has now been released. I have no need (or finances) to upgrade. However, if you can afford it I am sure the Art version is superb. The older version that I use is still nice and sharp. Here is a recent handheld shot form an indoor zoo nursery using available fluorescent light.

I own four EOS lenses and the other three are Canon L. This is my only non Canon lens but I do not regret it.

Lens Cap and Hood Problems

JonAustin said:
I've never attempted to shoot with the hood reversed on the lens, but I appreciate your comment. (Ever have anyone approach you in those situations and "educate you" that the hood is supposed mounted the other way 'round?)

As for its footprint in the bag, your comments remind me of my experiences with the 17-40's hood ... that thing was also a space-eating nightmare to pack.

Why do hoods snap on to lenses backwards? The same reason why 24-something zooms are external zooming: to save bag space.

Yeah, I only shoot with the hood reversed in quick 'stop-and-pop' situations. This might be when I spot some wildlife from the car, when I'm on a travel/street walkabout where I don't want the camera in view at all times, shooting out the side of a airplane window, etc.

I also do it in the odd circumstance of using a CPL and frequently moving between horizontal and vertical shooting (perhaps on a hike). It's a PITA to reset the the polarization around the hood every time I change orientation, so if I'm in a hurry in that circumstance, the hood stays reversed.

And no, surprisingly, no one's ever called me out on my hood being backwards. It's amazing how a blackrapid + 5D3 + L lenses tend to shut down advice/comments from other photographers. :D

Canon EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM

For those who are interested in this lens, major US retailers are selling it now for US$399; major Canadian retailers are selling the same lens for C$399. With exchange at about 1.35, you can do the math.

I bought mine from a Canadian retailer...but at the time, Canon USA wasn't selling them so that was really my only option.

Not another "bag" question! My M is growing.

lw said:
What about the M5. With its EVF, do you think it would squeeze into the MM20 where your M is?

hump on top is bulky and EVIL. :P

EOS M w/ 18-55 in a LowePro Dashpoint 30 [for separate carry and a bit additional protection] plus EF-M 22/2, 11-22, 55-200 plus accessories incl. mini-tripod [plus charger + cable on longer trips] fits nicely into an inexpensive [around € 35] and very functional Hama "Nashville 140" bag. https://www.hama.com/00121869/hama-kameratasche-nashville-140-schwarz-blau

Internal dimensions [L x D x H]:
Hama 140: 23.0 x 11.0 x 17.5 cm
TT MM20: 21.5 x 9.5 x 13.5 cm

M3 would definitely also fit in my Hama bag. M5 ... don't know ... yet. ;)

Wireless Tethering Canon 5D Mark IV

Hector1970 said:
Hi All,
I was experimenting tethering a Canon 5D Mark IV to a PC using EOS Utility 3.
My first comment is that is seems to be overly complicated.
I understand the set up of the wireless, I think that is reasonably well explained and easy to do.

I'd have thought the first function of tethering software would be you take a photo through the viewfinder and this shows up on the screen so you can see what photo you took.

Generally I view tethering as viewing the image seen by the camera sensor remotely on a external device which also controls focus and other settings. Then it allows you to activate the shutter and download the image.

What you are describing is more like the eye-fi card, take a shot, and its immediately uploaded to whichever device you have set. I would not call that tethering.

Temporary Speedlite Wall Mounts

craiglove said:
Also, the mini Cardellini clamps are great to have in your bag. I worked in the motion picture biz and we used them everywhere. I carry two of the Mini clamps in my bag and you can buy them with a little Manfrotto ball head as well. You can buy them from Steve (the manufacturer) at Film Crew Services. Wonderful little devices and a very solid mount!

Great tip!

RingType USM vs. STM/NanoUSM

Mt Spokane Photography said:
For low cost consumer lenses, the nano USM seems wonderful compared to older systems.
...
The nano USM is getting close and I would not hesitate to use it if the lens fitted my needs.
...
+1
I suppose that the rumored new 18-55 kit lens will get nano USM as one of its major changes.
I don't think that it will change much in optics, but I suppose that Canon is also trying to lower the production costs.

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III Review - Dustin Abbott

JMZawodny said:
I'll add myself to the list of thankful readers of this review. I conclude that this is not a lens for me...

Agree on both counts. In my case, the 24-70/2.8 is wide enough for my people/event shooting, I have two TS-E lenses in the 16-35 range for architecture, and if I really want wide, I have the 11-24/4L.

I did have the 16-35/2.8L II, and I don't regret selling it.

Just take the f/4 and you will be more than happy.
I hear you on the 16-35mm f/4 IS. I recently took a trip to Bavaria without it and instantly regretted leaving it at home. It is the closest thing I can find to an indispensable lens in my collection. But I worry that the 5DsR will need a fast lens to compensate for its high-ISO shortcomings (I'd like to keep the pics fairly high-resolution).

Thanks for the feedback.

I wouldn't sweat it... Attached shot 16-35 F4L handheld on a 5DSr, (about 20 degrees (F) outside, not that it really matters) from just a few weeks ago. It's a low res file, I know, but it holds up fine in a larger print and is obviously ok on the web. With a wide angle like this, even on the 5DSR you don't need a lot of shutter speed to stay sharp. Have a great trip, and good luck with your decision :)
