Canon 5D3 sensor overheats in video

I can maybe get 10-15 minutes of video recording before my camera shuts down. I shoot mostly live music and do turn the camera off briefly between songs. I also use a 80D and 70D and have no issues there at all but I can see a quality difference with the 5D3. Are all copies having this problem? It is very frustrating to have to change bodies in the middle of a show. i have another friend who has no problems at all.

When I bought the new about three years ago it came with a bad sensor. There were lines all across the image. Canon replaced it but once I started shooting video it has just been endless problems.

Any thoughts here? Thanks in advance, Craig

Lensrentals reviews new Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED AF-S VR MTFs

The Nikon shooters have got a good option here, but painfully expensive.

If you look in the comments section in the Lensrentals article, Roger Ciccala provides mtf curves of the Sony G master 70-200 f2.8. It doesn't look very good for the (overpriced) Sony.

Ouch on the Sony performance or lack thereof!

Phottix Indra500LC with Canon RT

I am a wedding photographer that already uses multiple Canon 600ex flashes. I have also been using a 600 watt battery powered studio strobe by Flashpoint. If feel like bringing a strobe to weddings has made my job much easier and because of the limitations of my current strobe I am looking to upgrade. This strobe looks very interesting to me. Has anyone had the chance to use one yet?

I'm also keen to get one of these.

Canon 1Dx vs 5D IV - Pure Image Quality question

AlanF said:
Go into dpreviews and download raw files. Use this link

https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-5d-mark-iv/9

and chose the cameras and isos for comparison.
I used it to compare 5DsR with 5Ds. That was an eye opener! I wished we could compare APS-C with FF cameras from the same distance. Not fair for FF but it would help for FL limited situations. But I guess 7D2 and 5Ds have similar pixel density and AA filters...

Thanks for the link :)

EDIT: And I was able to compare 7D2 with 5DsR. Alan this is the n-th time you make me want a 5DsR. I think I will have to send you the bill after all ;D ;D ;D

P.S Thanks again :)

Sony A99 ii, crippled AF video mode!

If canon can make face recognition jump to EyeAF as effective as the alpha, I'll probably never use the Sony again.

Aside from never using it again, I'll second those sentiments. EyeAF is game changing. It's not perfect, but it's exceptional and allows me to frame and shoot in ways I'd otherwise not be able to.

And it shouldn't be difficult. Canon has a hardware advantage with the DPAF tech, doing the festure recognition and tracking would be a pretty simple step for the software team, I'd think.

Tracking AF - 5D MkIV vs 7D MkII

Had it out this morning. Tried with it on or off but its too early to say which is besr.

I struggled with the mark 3 AF and a canon 100 to 400 v1. If it lost focus tracking a bird it wouldnt get it back.
I put a lot of it down to lousy technique because I see plenty of good shots with that camera posted daily.
Tried all the cases etc

So bringing my lousy technique to the mark 4... its fast. It locks quick.
Once or twice (due to me swinging a long lense) it lost track for a fraction of a second... but it relocks fast...
Impressive...

But i still have no idea if iTR off or on is better for birds...

PhotoZone Review: 16-35 f/2.8L III

kaffikopp said:
Regarding everyone getting up in arms about the vignetting, why would this be a dealbreaker for astro when according to TDP, the go-to lens for astrophotographers these days, the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 has about the same amount? Link

Sure, the Samyang costs a fraction of the new Canon L lens, but if we ignore price for a moment and just look at real world usage, the end result is the same with both lenses: having to push the corners by several stops. From what I've seen so far, the coma performance of the L is pretty impressive, on par with or maybe even surpassing the Samyang. You also get better overall IQ, less distortion, AF, L-grade build quality and the versatility of a zoom.

Now I haven't used either of these lenses myself, but was planning on the 16-35 III to be my next lens purchase until I learned of the massive vignetting. However, as already explained, if it's not an issue for astro with the Samyang, why would it be with this lens?
Samyang's vignette is not as bad and it is a wider focal length so enables a longer exposure before trailing. The goto lens is in fact the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8:

Tamron 150-600mm G2 Review by Dustin

Very nicely done.... as usual :)

One question though, how did you do the lens calibration?

On which lens? I didn't calibrate the V1 (used MF for comparison shots with both lenses). Ironically I COULD magnify the image in video mode to focus the V1 even though Live View would automatically shut down during Live View for stills.

My traditional process is Reikan FoCal and then combined with either the Sigma USB dock or Tamron Tap In Console if applicable.
I use focal as well.....

The problem with this lens was the three distances required.

At the 20 meters distance, all went well and the runs of FoCal at 150, 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600mm were easy.

At the minimum focal distance, it recognized the target at 150mm. I had to print a half size target to get FoCal to work at 200, 300, and 400mm. I had to print a 1/3 size target to get it to work at 500 and 600mm.

For infinity, I am not sure which distance to pick. I was thinking 100 meters, but I am really not sure what to pick here. I think that it goes without saying that I will have to print a larger version of the target....

I haven't tried to measure at a distance like 100mm. I typically will go out to about 50mm and call that enough.

Tamron SP 150-600 mk1 with 5D4 in live view

I'm assuming a firmware update is required on the lens but curious if anyone else can recreate this or has had this problem fixed (and if so, what was the confirmed cause):

When using live view video on the 5D4, with the Tamron SP 150-600 (mk1) attached, the 5D4's auto focus does not work (no overlay on LCD, no response to touchscreen, no camera-driven focus on lens). When I manually focus I then experience intermittent bursts of erratic exposure and hallucinogenic colour bursts when bright points of light (from, say, a street light at night) hit the sensor.

When using live view stills on the 5D4, the mirror will not stay locked up, it flips up then back down immediately after you hit start, disabling live view immediately.

FWIW I don't get these issues with my other Tamron lens (15-30 2.8 VC) - the video auto focus isn't *particularly* smooth with that, but everything appears to work as it should.

I experienced this issue when reviewing the 150-600 G2 (I had a V1 lens for comparison). It does require a free firmware update to fix this issue. Contact Tamron and they will take care of it. One big advantage for the G2 - you don't have to deal with that in the future. You can do very quick firmware updates at home.

Good stuff, thanks Dustin. Enabling users to upgrade firmware is a big step forward.

BTW same issues on 1DXii, if anyone else is wondering.

The lens is off to the UK distributor on Monday.

Ta.

Thanks! I reckon they've mixed it up with the Non - L series lens which they also have for £373.

Anyway, order placed - we'll see what turns up....

Me too, thanks! Shhhhhhh

Arranged click and collect at Waitrose tomorrow so will see what turns up :)

Sadly now out of stock. Hope you get it! Might ring my local store tomorrow on the slim chance they have it. Bargain at that price! Wish I had logged in earlier.

We did! Many thanks to Lorex for spotting that one. We owe you a beer or ten :)

Lucky! Rang up today, nothing anywhere now :( Sods law says the price goes back up when they get it back in stock too.

LensTip Review - Sigma 85mm f/1.4 Art

This is a lens for the history books.
If copy variation holds, and users have good experiences with AF, it's going to take a miracle for anyone to outperform this Sigma 85A.

Canon could try and get similar results at f1.2, but that would still be a $3,000 lens.

What's missing in these reviews is the 'magic' / color / rendering that a resolution chart drives right past. The 85mm prime situation very well could be like comparing the 50 Art to the 50L and you have resolution-obsessives buy the Sigma and 'magic'/bokeh-obsessives buy the Canon.

But the sharpness gauntlet has been thrown down by Sigma yet again. Canon responded brilliantly with the 35L II, but we've heard nothing but crickets at 50mm and now they have this 85mm to contend with.

It much less a threat to Canon's business so much as Canon's pride, so at some point they have to punch back.

- A

Not into "magic" colors myself. I use lens-specific color profiles which makes all lenses de facto equal on the color side (as in neutral).

Bokeh is of course another matter. It will need more samples than we have seen so far to determine. What I have seen so far did not make me shy away.

The same was said of sharpness and the 70-200 IS L II bokeh and it got a lot of heat for its bokeh being worse than the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L - but in the end people succumbed to its superior optical qualities. Today I almost never hear people complain at the 70-200 IS L II bokeh any more.

well, actually they do, I love the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II, but in every 135mm vs 70-200mm thread you see the coma mentioned, yes its not the same lens, but also its not the same for 85mm, you don't use 85mm for sports like the 70-200 or for events where you need the zoom flexibility, so for the sole use of the 85mm bokeh is very important, I am not saying its bad in the new Sigma, but its clearly different.

Pixsy. Anyone use it?

Twitter friend has put me onto it. Essentially you let it scan your Flickr, 500px etc, then it searches the web for your photos, you review any matches, its lawyers put in a claim and any payments are shared 50/50. Sounds simple. Just wondering if its genuine, worth the effort? I've never really hunted for my own photos before, didn't think anyone would try to use them...

It would have been interesting to know how these holes were made. Looks like someone has been practicing with a tool set :)

I assume they were made by some kind of marine mollusc.
I suppose some by molluscs, and some by grinding of the stones together with waves. So a natural "tool set" ;)

dpc, congrats to the good eye for such details. Lovely shots.
interesting, I was just wondering how those holes were created
