New Rebel DSLR Coming for CES in January [CR2]

Josh Denver said:
A new rebel? So fast?

No way.

The new rebels are making very good sales, the t6i and t6s, especially the later. Not GREAT sales but very decent. They will never the product so fast, they'll make some money off of it first.

The t6i and S were huge upgrades to the rebel line. The rebels toped at the 700D/T5i, which was nothing new compared to a 550D/600D including the sensor and speed and image quality. While the t6i/s are the most major upgrade for the rebel line in a loong time.
They added:

-A new 24mp chip, with great AF in liveview.
-New processor
-More focus points and area
-Wireless transfer
-Top LCD
-A front iris dial
-Newest metering system

The t6s is an ABSOLUTE joy to use. Best body I've seen from Canon in size, weight, ergonomics, a perfect balance between a tiny sl1/t5 and 80D/7D/5D. My only gripe is the front iris wheel is small.
if it's meant to replace 100D, then there is point of releasing new model, as already said if there were sensor from 80D and some nice features, then it would sell really fast ;)

24-105L II delayed until December, but the kit with it is in stock right now

candyman said:
Finally I was able to test the new 24-105L II (basic testing - I am not an expert in that area)
For the record: it was not a kit-lens but separate lens that comes in the original Canon box.
The production date is October 2016 (4603xxxx67xx)

MK II
I see some improvement in mid- and corner sharpness at 24mm (f4) over the original version
Vignetting at 24mm (f4) slightly worse than the original version

Distortion at 24mm (f4) same as original version
At 105mm (f4) the center sharpness is less than the original version
At 105mm (f4) the vignetting is worse than the original version
At 105mm (f4) the CA is pretty much the same

The Canon dealer was surprised as well about these results. It is possible that I got a bad copy. They just had one copy so I could not compare with another MKII. Delivery is still difficult.
Somehow I think that the first batch has a QA problem after reading on the internet about other comparisons.

I decided not to replace my orginal 24-105. I will wait a couple of months into 2017 and try again with newer batches.
Thanks for the info. I believe though that's just that and there is not a QA problem (but of course if you can check back in 2017 you are more than welcome to do so...)

Let me know what you think once you find him

WOW @ Michael Doe´s spider shots on Flikr! Rich, intimate (and cute) spider portraits! Thanks for pointing us towards this guy and yes, certainly something to strive for,-the light is playful and almost stage-like, but very cool and precise images. Happy shooting y´alls :-D

Reviews flying in: a speed read to keep up with all the new lenses

Tamron 150-600mm f/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2:[/b] I've only seen TDP's review of this, but it looks to be a slight improvement optically over the first version.

It has been comprehensively reviewed on many of the common sites. The first review I saw was from digitalrev. It's subsequently been reviewed in depth in

Optically, it's very similar to version 1, but better built.

Yep. Optyczne = LensTip. I just posted on that review on another thread as their copious data (and AF testing!) will likely start a healthy conversation.

Worth picking up a 5DsR, or waiting?

In terms of more MP, it's simply a matter of printing with more details. A 60" x 40" image from a 50 MP camera will print at a higher DPI than one from a 20 MP camera.

That being said, I'm putting the 5DsR up for sale today. I'm just seeing too much noise from pushing images - even though I'm shooting everything on a tripod at ISO 100. Because this is not a problem on the 1Dx2, I'm seeing that images from that camera are coming out much cleaner and nicer.

Stock Notice: Sigma 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sport at B&H Photo

Re: Stock Notice: Sigma 500mm f/4 DG OS HSM Sport at B&H Photo

Mr Majestyk said:
Resale value of Canon is better than 70%, often 90%. Hell I sold an 8 year old 500 v1 for the same as I paid new!

As someone who is actively looking for 500mm II, I'd say 70% is spot on for the used value of this lens. $9000 new, under $6500 for the ones that are actually selling on eBay. Above that and they just sit and sit.

When the dollar was weak and the great whites were getting significant price increases, yes, it was easy to sell a used lens for the original price paid. But now the dollar is strong and we recently went through a couple of price cuts on great whites and that has cut the used values also. My 300mm IS II that I bought used is probably worth about a grand less now after the pice cuts.

DXO, Fair and Balanced, Chapter 236: The D500 rulez, yo

I am more impressed at how the optical properties change as you move it between mounts than the scoring...

Yeah, because I'm sure DXO runs test method / gauge R&R work for all their methods. :P

One half wonders what the results would be from them testing the same lens + body combo repeatedly.

- A
To heck with changing mounts.....

Take the 100L Macro lens.....

Test it on the 5D2, 5D3, and the 5D4.....

and somehow, as you move it between those three cameras the sharpness, t-Stop, vignetting, and chromatic aberration change....

This REALLY!!!!!! challenges the accuracy of their testing and as a result, makes the results meaningless....

Request for advice: Nightphotography & Sigma 12-24 F/4 Art

pedro said:
Hi,
I am currently using the Samyang 14 F/2.8 on my 6D.
Would like to go a bit wider.
As a hobbyist photographer, I cannot justify the purchase of Canon's 11-24 F/2.8

Lonley Speck is not very positive about F/4 lenses for lowlight.

What do you think?
Had the Canon 16-35 F/2.8 until it got stolen

Kind regards
For fairly low cost, you could try the Rokinon 12mm fisheye.

Scenic locations around Lake Shasta

I was looking for a proper forum to post this, not sure if it should be here. I am looking to visit Redding, CA and Lake Shasta and is the first time I will be visiting those areas. I will be going to the Crater Lake, and Klamath Falls as well but I am unable to determine where to go when in the Redding area, and around Lake Shasta for landscape photowalks.

Which scenic locations, or other lakes, streams, or vista points do you fine folks recommend I should definitely check out when I am there. I will be carrying the 16-35 and 70-200, some ND filters for long exposures, as well as my trusty tripod for this trip.

Patent: Canon Mount Replacement Camera System

I really can't imagine why this would be for DSLR's. its most likely for EF / PL lenses, right now its a major job to switch and align the mounts. presumably, some provision will be made for alignment.

I doubt if many would want to pay the additional cost that Canon would charge for the feature, and PL mount lenses are expensive in full frame versions.

CPL Filter differences.

Hi Alex.
Plus another one on that, I have 2 sizes in my kit, so far I have not had a stuck filter that needed tools. It did come close the other day, I got a cheap star 6 filter that wouldn't come off, just took that and the UV filter off and put them in the holder in my pocket, ten minutes later it just came off, couldn't tell it had been tight.
I was walking round our local Diwali displaying in the cold of evening and had taken the star filter out of my pocket so it was probably differential expansion that caused the problem, putting both in a warm pocket to equalise temperature was all that was needed.

Cheers, Graham.

+1 for the cheap plastic filter wrench is great for removal of stucked filter. It is cheap, small, light and always in my photo backpack.

Is Canon EOS SL1 / 100D still worth to buy? Or M3?

Josh Denver said:
slclick said:
If I had to do it all over again today? I'd go with the M5. I wanted to like the SL1 so badly but it was too small for my hands, too much noise and was a piss poor backup to the 5D3 overall.

Noise as in image noise ot sound noise (mirror + shutter)

The SL1 images are fantastically clean. With similar sharpness to the 5DIII files in detail, dynamic range of pushing the photos, identical colours, just a very very lovely image. The 5DIII shows an image advantage only above high ISOs (and of course the FF DOF). Both are pretty lousy cameras in noise when pushed up underexposd images. So you must be a high ISO shooter I wonder? (Typically shoot at 1600-6400 ISO)

Obviously this is a YMMV issue. I had image noise all over the place. I only used L glass and never above 6400. I'm not angry, just my experience.

5d3 doesn't want to recognise lenses

Thanks guys (and/or ladies).
I've cleaned the contacts a number of times, and it was happening on 3 different lenses.
I've never had any water on the camera, but I think the problem could be heat related.
It started happening on Friday, and again yesterday. It was however over 30C both days and the camera was in the back of my station wagon, though the camera didn't feel hot to the touch, just a bit warm.

I tried the camera today, and it worked fine with a number of different lenses. I only took 30 or so shots, but everything is now working OK.
I'll keep it out of the car on warm days and hope it keeps working until I get my 5d4 in late December after Xmas. Then I can take into Canon to get it checked out early next year.

Sigma 1.4/85 ART RAW samples for download

Shot handheld on borrowed Canon 6D at Sigma booth. Only f1.4.

BIIG (but I wouldn't mind on my 1D). Quiet focus and reasonably fast in comparison to my 1.2/85L, but not lightning fast like 2.8/100L Macro on my 1DIV. Unfortunately I have no experience with 6D AF, maybe on my 1DIV the focus acquisition will be faster.

But, this thing is shaarp and contrasty wide open, I think it's sharper than Milvus 1.4/85. No APO performance, some bokeh CA in first and second shot, but those are true torture for this kind of lens. On last portrait, bokeh looks very nice.

Well I'd like to do some comparison to my 1.2/85L and Planar ZE 1.4/85 on 1DsIII in studio, to check color rendering of this beast, but I have strong feeling that it can replace the L in near future.

Here you can download the RAWs.
