I guess so Jack, well that and the AF system on the 1 series always seems to have the edge, saying that we don't know how good the 5D4 is at this time, but given 1DX v 5D3 you could place a good bet. Like you I like to have good IQ etc, but the thing that always comes back to me is no matter how good the IQ if you miss focus...well...you know.. I like your style Jack, now I used to always talk a mate into buying something, that way I could get a good hands on before "I" buy haha, shame only one of my mates has the bug for photography and does not suffer from GAS! :D

Sadly death took my camera buddy. We complemented each other like peas in a pod alternately buying gear and sharing the impressions and actual hard evidence. I plunged first on the 300 2.8 II, he first with the 1DX and I restrained since I knew a Mark II wasn't far away.

Funny how some gripe about CR and its personalities. I wouldn't want to give up on CR. Too many helpful folk with good information they are wiling to share! :)

Jack

Sorry to hear that Jack, most people round me (mainly my partner) get sick of me talking cameras and bikes.

Had many bikes but gave that up when it was clear that I probably wasn't going to survive to enjoy my retirement. ;) It was hard for sure.

Concert Goers - No Professional Camera - What does that mean???

Luds34 said:
In case anyone is interested, my entrance into the concert was very anti-climatic. No one even wanted to look through my bag (granted it was that tiny lowepro dashpoint). Oh well.

My favorite concert was the Within Temptation show I saw in November 2014. They are hands down my favorite band and I was determined to try and get my 5D3 in. Turned out they just took my ticket and didn't even look at the backpack I had on.

I shot the show for probably 4/5 of the concert when finally the security guy (same guy who handed me the extra battery my wife handed down from the balcony level earlier in the concert) told me "you're gonna have to put that camera away cause it's professional. I shot video on my phone for the remainder of the show. Excellent quality video . . .

Where is it best to use 50 MP vs 20 MP? Wide angle or standard focal length.

My wife's family is in Manhattan and we go often...

Walking in Central park with two expensive camera bodies slung is asking for trouble. Be sure to also carry a giant map of the city and a shirt that says "I love NY". A cowboy hat would look good too.

I think you forgot your winking face or sarcasm tags. :)

7D Mark II

Interesting.... ofcourse its just one more camera to choose from. Will be fun to see if people will actually buy into it. Most people use the alexa and the red because they like that particular feel or because its useful for that particular movie.
I do like the color science of canon though, its very pure.

What I dont care for though is their lens line up for film.... breathing simply does not look good on film.
Which is where zeiss, angeniux etc. rules the world.

5D iv Dual Pixel RAW files give an extra stop in the highlights

jaayres20 said:
I am not sure if I understand this, but this seems interesting to me. Especially if LR eventually supports DP RAW files. Most of the time it seems like we look at the ability of a camera's sensor to recover shadows as a measure of dynamic range. But if the info is in the highlights, then there is no reason to underexpose everything by 5 stops.

http://www.imaging-resource.com/news/2016/09/01/dual-pixel-raw-redux-forget-focus-tweaks-canons-new-tech-can-yield-an-addit

It could be less to do with the sensor and as much to do with how the manufacturer sets up the metering algorithms.
The sensor records the data and the metering can be programmed to give you the equivalent of ISO100, f5.6 1/250 or ISO100, f5.6, 1/350 or ISO 100, f5.6 1/180

What looks like 'recovering highlights' is simply the programmer helping you not to blow the highlights.

A good example I have noted with my 7D2 (and others have commented with 6D and 1DX2 etc) is that images straight out of camera seem darker than with previous generations.

You then of course have other programming wizardry that could help the situation.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV to be 30mp? [CR1]

GMCPhotographics said:
Canon and Nikon know that to battle on a 1:1 basis is not good business, it devalues the market and margins for both companies. So the trick is to split the range so that neither camera quite competes on the same level. Canon did this with the 6D and 5D3. Then they split the range again with the 5DS/R. So the Nikon D810 doesn't quite compete with any of these cameras and it's current choice of 35mp was quite cleaver. Although it's still trying to regain the lost market of the D800 from the D700. The D800 was a camera that no one wanted and it isolated a lot of Nikon users. The jump from 12mp to 36mp was too steep for many. Also it's interesting that the release cycles of these two brands is 2 years out of phase. So each brand gets to trump each other every two years...when the truth is that it's just a new camera competing against a more out of date camera.

I am very curious to see what the D810 follow up is. I would have thought Nikon would have simply licensed that A7R II sensor, but they have opted out, either for timing reasons (it was mid-cycle on the D810) or they want to go it alone with their own sensors.

(Also: D5 = Nikon sensor, D810/D750/D610 = Sony sensors, D500 = ? I can't seem to find a clear tell elsewhere online.)

I cannot stand things that black out in the middle of something. I hate it when something expensive just does not work...yes, I am talking about Sony A6000/Metabones/Canon EF lenses...

Why not a 6D? The sensor is just as good as the 5D3, it just doesn't have the better AF system that you don't really need for your use case.

So when do we think the 5DS and 5DSR will be updated?

iaind said:
Probably with the 5dv with hopefully cfast cards and probably nearer 2021.

5ds/r cheaper than 5d4. which would you buy?
For the price I'd certainly go for the 5DS/R myself.

5DIV looks great and I expect the sensor has better noise and DR than the 5DS/R (of course need to see this verified by real tests) however, the 5DS/R wins big in detail/resolution ~50% better than 5DIV which is more important to me. Also, the 5DS/R has a lot of the key IQ upgrades that you find in the 5DIV. Like its DR is up to 2 full stops better than the 5DIII at lower iso.

Can't go wrong with either.

Good luck with your choice.

Leaked info from Canon Ambassador - Canon EF 50 f/1.4L II USM?

I'm interested in a 50 1.4 II and I think a very large % of other consumers are too, what is taking so long? A lot of people are bring their sales over to Sigma and Tamron for these standard primes. I have the 50 1.8 STM and despite the incredibly slow focus speed and awful focus by wire it's still a great/useful lens with the dated 50 1.4 providing no benefit that I can see.

A bunch of Travel advice needed!

I have the feeling that the original poster would prefer people who spend their time in writing sound, detailed advice, even if he doesn't feel comfortable with their photos on his thread, than just an empty, useless sarcasm.

I would, at least.

Well...speak on behalf of the OP (who I am sure is perfectly capable of making their own mind on this matter) about the unacceptability of posting photos and then accuse someone else of empty sarcasm. Instead of one post you find unacceptable there is now a diversion about forum ettiquete (and yes, I do realise the irony of saying that while adding my own post on the matter, so I will leave it there).

Fair enough. It just maddened me to see someone spending their time on giving a thorough, helpful advice, being bashed for no apparent reason. Opinions may (should) differ of course.

5Dsr for bird photography?

AlanF said:
Arthur Morris is raving about the 5Dsr on his blog - but he does have links to buy it! Other bird photographers are more sanguine.

The appeal to me is that it would have better resolution than the 7DII when cropped for distant birds, and for close ups would be significantly better when the bird fill the FF. Set against that, are the size of the files and the slower frame rate.

Also, I am wondering if the resolution advantage of not having a low pass filter would be lost when using a 100-400mm II + 1.4xTC. The native lens is sharp enough to take advantage of the sensor. But, the softness introduced by the TC might mean that the 5Dsr cropped is no better than the 7DII.
Alan if we have to compare apples to apples the 7DII and the 5DsR have the same pixel density which means the same pixels/bird (some member had said pixels/duck which I like a lot ;D ).
So we have to compare them either without or with tc on both of them.
EDIT: I just saw it was a very old thread. Sorry for this!

A7RII - Design Flaw?

Humid air will not stick around a heat sink. Because it is hotter, that area will actually be drier.

So is that why exhaust lines never rust? ::)

Corrosion through oxidation are electrochemical reactions. They don't require exposure to water, they require exposure to air. Heat will accelerate those processes.

Agreed. The illustration is somewhat flawed, but it's point still holds. Just because something is hotter doesn't lower it's propensity to oxidation necessarily. In general, oxidation is accelerated as temperature increases.
