Hasselblad Announces Groundbreaking X1D Medium Format Mirrorless Camera

The groundbreaking aspect of this camera is not how it compares to a FF DSLR but how it compares to a leaf shutter equipped MF competitor.
It brings mirrorless, leaf shutter 50MP CMOS at under $10k. Lenses are very affordable in comparison to competing LS MF glass.

The shortcomings it may seemingly have are largely in comparison to cameras it is not seeking to displace.

It will get a lot more well heeled enthusiasts looking for high performance but are not shooting BIF, sports or astro.
Pros looking to make the jump to MF can now justify the investment.

Of course this just increases the tension in the wait for the Fuji MF offering.

Anyone else interested in 1Dx M2 with APS-c sensor?

Guys less testing of cameras regardless of APS-C or FF and more on lenses. Recently was testing filters on the 5DS using a light sphere fitted with a CIPA high resolution chart. I used a number of different Canon L lenses we have and was shocked at just how bad some were (we tested with & without filters to see how much of a resolution loss the filters were producing). The difference being talked about regarding resolution between APS-C & FF sensors are not real world in the life-cycle of CMOS today whereas differences between lenses are and on that I would differ with Keith at Northlight it pays to check any new lens you purchase fully and exchange it if your unhappy.

Having the main subject out of focus most of the time will be so very artistic!

1. probably these will be manual focus lenses.
2. I own 50 and 35 art, don't get a single out of focus image ever. just check out the lens before you buy, it isn't that hard.

EOS 1DX2 impressions from a 1D first timer

Lightning strikes in remote areas are often the cause, but some are people caused - intentional or not. Lightning can cause many spot fires over large area that then merge into one large fire. Many years ago my dad was the navigator/bombardier on a B52 crew. They aborted their training mission when they spotted a bunch of fires started by lightning. He used the bomb site to pinpoint the location of each fire while they circled the area and radioed them to the forest service. The wing commander was mad they aborted their mission until the forest service called.

Perhaps I should stick to Flickr for samples.

5Diii unresponsive after long exposures

Disable LENR.... your camera is trying to take a "dark frame" for noise cancellation, and it will try to take one of the same exposure length as the original image. Just set the camera for a 5 second exposure..... the image will take 5 seconds and then for the next 5 seconds the camera will be "locked" as it takes the dark frame.... try a 10 second exposure and it will be "locked" for ten seconds.... take a 30 minute exposure and the camera will be "locked" for 30 minutes....

Patent: Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 DO

Luds34 said:
Is that true? That the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II is not parfocal? I guess I just sort of took for granted that a number of the higher end lenses were parfocal. I do own the f/2.8 non-IS. I also believe my other zooms are parfocal.

I mostly shoot primes but I should keep this in mind for when I shoot zooms. I'd hate to be focusing, then at the last second tweaking the zoom a bit for better composition, not realizing I'm adding a slight softness to the shot.

I admit I haven't tested other Canon 70-200/2.8L lenses other than mine, but it's consistent with reports I've heard. I tested it by shooting wide open on my then-Canon 5Dii at 70, 100, 135, and 200 marks wide open at closest focus and 10m distance. Subject was my living room. I focused at the 200mm position and pixel-peeped the results in center and corner. Sure seemed parfocal at 20mpx! Zoom while recording video always looked splendid at 1080P (2 megapixel FTW).

The reason I think concerns still photo history. At the dawn of the computerized lens design age http://blog.camera-wiki.org/2012/03/13/vivitar-historical-research-part-1/ when manual focus was the only game in town, the incumbent major brands Canon, Leica, Pentax, Nikon,,, made carefully-engineered zooms that were all parfocal. (Caveat: I was too young to hold a camera back then, and I'm not an optical engineer this info fits my research.) In that era, pros would zoom all the way in, focus the split image, then zoom out to compose. Challengers Vivitar, Sigma, Tamron, etc discovered by relaxing the requirements allowing varifocal and variable-aperture lenses, they could produce lighter and sharper lenses than the incumbents.

Fast forward to autofocus days, it no longer was a requirement for a lens to be parfocal since people relied demanded fast and accurate autofocus first, so little by little, they stopped making compromises required to achieve the "true zoom" (parfocal).

Most zooms from the past are slow, dim, heavy, and flawed. Pro zooms for their day produce ok images -- I'd say comparable to consumer zooms of today in IQ, but with a very different color rendition, less crisp.

Any rumor of a Zeiss Milvus 180/200mm (f2.8)?

photojoern.de said:
No chance in my opinion. There are phantastic opportunities in the market, the 70-200 f2.8 with a fast autofocus, 4 stop IS and amazing picture quality. And a 200mm f2.0 if you are in the extreme boquet / portrait area. I do not see the market for such a Zeiss lens. What would it be, what would be the application?

Mainly 1:1 macro (research) and prolly studio portraiture. Even 200/2.0 if I might wish that just as Canon has one.

The Tamron 85/1.8 is really great and even works great with the video autofocus of the 1DX2. If they do a 135/2 VC and 24/1.8 VC that would be awesome.

BUT there are major incompatibilities between the 1DX2 and other Tamron lenses like the 15-30/2.8 VC or the lightweight superzoom 28-300, who don't work at all! TAMRON AND CANON PLEASE WAKE UP ASAP AND FIX THIS!!!! These bugs are especially annoying when it's happening with the most expensive DSLR and lenses that have no alternative on the market.

I'm sure that Tamron will have a firmware update for the lenses, but this is one area where having the Tap In console compatibility will be nice for future lenses. It would allow them to roll out firmware updates more quickly and easily.

I know Tamron's latest prime lenses will be compatible with the TAP-In Console however, they really should find a way to allow the 15-30 VC, 24-70 VC, and the latest 70-200 VC to utilize it. Let's check and see if they ever will.

I doubt it. Just like older Sigma' don't work with the dock. I think they've got to account for that in the design - though I could be wrong. I'd love to see those three lenses included, of course, since I own them all.

So, the TAP-in Console was released a couple of weeks back and I finaly got one! Dustin, what do you think of using the TAP-in as a rear lens cap for convenience? Were there any issues with doing the same for the Sigma Dock?

What country are you in? The reason I ask is that I haven't even gotten one yet, and both Tamron Canada and Tamron USA are eager to put one in my hands ASAP.

I'm struggling to see the logic of using it as a rear cap, though, particular when the current Tamron rear cap is the nicest one out there.

Yeah, I was wondering if it could double as a rear lens cap purly for the convenience of having one in your bag however, Tamron said the TAP-in has not been tested to do that so that's a BIG NO no for me.

I live in the US in Texas and I bought mine from B&H for $59.00 here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=1233544&gclid=CjwKEAjw-r27BRCzsNyzrMrM-j0SJACp2TiBA5zF4ilj8zSa82dp7jP7OwKP3hJIWkhxGLQqt7IkIhoCl9vw_wcB&is=REG&ap=y&m=Y&c3api=1876%2C92051678762%2C&Q=&A=details

I did a random google search one day and was surprised B&H and Adorama had them in stock for almost a week! A very quiet release huh?

Interesting. B&H and Adorama must have gotten priority on them. I'll have to reach out to my contacts and make sure someone gets me one.

Canon EOS 6D vs Canon EOS 7D II (from wildlife perspective)

"Have you micro adjusted your body/lenses? Also, using FF lenses on a crop body means that you take a sharpness/detail hit, what lenses are you using?"

The sharpness-problem: I did no afma, because when analysing the problem I compared phase-detection af to liveview-af. In lifeview (=contrast-detection) and best conditions (magnify 10x, tripod, higher shutter speed, , raw-files, stills, clear air etc., 100-400II) no very good sharpness was possible. Here in the forum and elsewhere I´ve seen perfect clear pics with that cam/lens combi. What is wrong? Isn´t afma not necessary when using lifeview??
Thanks for your reply!

Coming back to the TO:
After using crop for long time, I´got used to it. The 7DII is very good compared to other crops I´ve used. If this combo would deliver superb-sharpness (like I´ve seen in some posts), I don´t feel like changing to FF, also for landscapes, events etc.

looking for sraw and mraw file samples to document CR2 format (80D and 1DX m2)

@Bennie

yes, mraw and sraw are 15bits instead of 14bits, and YUV instead of RGGB. YUV pictures has been introduced at the same time as Liveview (on 40D) and video on 5dm2. So the YUV mode of the sensor is used to: 1- create lower resolution files (using "out of sensor" data) and as input to mpeg engine.

question about RAW formats?

Expensive accessory - given that it will work only on 1 of my lenses and only need to do this once or twice in the life time of the lens.

Expensive? In this hobby/craft/profession? A $49 item for a group of $799-$3399 lenses which go on $1100-$6000 bodies is a mere pittance. If $49 is what it takes to keep your glass operating in top form it's some of the wisest cash you can spend in photography.

I wouldn't say it's expensive... but I can understand no to buy it for $49 just to keep the lens actual. What if you need a $49 gimmick to update your CanonBody? Right, you would say it's insane. This should be a service on a local Sigmadealer, nothing more. The adapter makes sens if you have more than one lens and some trouble with AF.

And why bodies >$1100? Is a lower APS-C body not worth an Artlens?

Sorry about that my APS-C friend I just don't think about crop much. Yes, Im sure they are ok on a crop body.

Tamron's Tap-in Console

I've seen a similar situation with a Canon 100-400 Mark I. I don't think people pay attention to this because with the Canon AFMA process, people stick one or two values in and move along. Why would they test out what their 70-200 is doing at 85mm?

I think it's also the case that a couple years ago AFMA values of 0-4 were considered invisible. Nowadays, though, we have people with 50mp sensors cropping long lenses, so - for some people - it does matter.

Canon U.S.A. Announces New Video Creator Kits

Even if we find someone interested in this new package and even recognizing that the initial price (B&H's $2,049 for example) for the package will be discounted significantly as time goes on, wow the initial price makes no sense (unless that 32GB card is way more expensive than a similar 16GB card):

At B&H, you can now buy the 80D along with the new 18-135 USM version lens for $1,599 (which, BTW, includes an extra third party battery (Value - $35.00) and a nice shoulder bag (Value - $35.00) - two items not included in the "Video Creator" kit)

Add the $149 PZ-E1 Power Zoom Adaptor for $149.

Add the Rode VideoMic Go for $99. (Hmm, does the Video Creator kit provide a better Rode mic? I think not).

Total: $1,849.00

I can't figure out whether I am missing something here or whether the Video Creator kit is missing something given that the Video Creator kit will be selling (assuming someone is buying) for $2,049.00.

Did the gorillas in Rwanda last october, with 5DSR, 7D2 and 5D2, here's a little selection:

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18142910&size=lg

5DSR in these circumstances was just brilliant & produced images that are just out of this world. For me, there's no better body for the job. Paired it with 70-200 2.8 IS II most of the time. For gorillas, the crop 7D2 was great but too tight, better for distant elusive chimps & birds. The 5D2, while still producing good quality shots, just made me want to kill the guy who designed its AF. RIP, it died over there in the rain...
Sorry to say and I don't mean disrespect... But those images can't even compare to Craig's. They look flat, over processed and there are a lot of flat highlights and lack of sharpness... Out of this world? Maybe out of this country... Nothing like the quality of the 1DX II... Again. Just my opinion as a viewer.

That's a very ugly thing to say, flat? I never knew the 1D X 2 did 3D images I'll need to upgrade my monitor to see this effect he's talking about I always though that cameras capture 2D. I'll be damed. The guy looks like he didn't edit anything much if at all. That would be expected in the situation it was shot in.
