I hope the YN-E3-RT trigger still works with 600EX II-RT!
...
I don't think they can permanently lock out the YN-E3-RT without breaking compatibility with their own devices. Yongnuo has the big advantage that the firmware of the YN-E3-RT can be updated by the user, so they are much more flexible than the Canon devices and can adapt to changes.

Principally: yes.
In practice: Don't hold your breath.
Yongnuo has a track record of adapting their products very slowly and with extremely poor communication and documentation ... if at all. It takes more resources than they have to quickly reverse engineer Canon's ever changing protocol shenanigans.

Novoflex lens adapter needed

Hi all,

I'm looking for a specific adapter: M42 for Castbal T/S. In the past I bought one, but I don't remember where I bought it and cannot find the invoice. I contacted Novoflex, but they don't know the adapter at all :o

Does anyone has information on how/where to obtain this adapter?

Here are some images. For comparison, I included the UNILEI (which has M39 thread).

Is it possible to remove the top off of a 600ex-rt??

Just buy the YN E3 RT, cheap and gives you second curtain, but has an AF assist beam so powerful that it can cut off people's heads like a laser beam ;)

It is a laser beam (or actually multiple of them). I definitely wouldn't want to use it when shooting people for eye-safety reasons.

:) :) :) That type of red laser is generally very low power (< 1mw). While bright... the subject will be okay. Supermarket checkers look at them all the time.

15-85 Equivalent on Full Frame

CanonFanBoy said:
If you know you will mistreat a lens, buy used no matter what. Not sure what you mean by "mistreated" but I wouldn't waste the money on good glass if "mistreated" means what I think it means.

Ultimately, it is your money. :D

I can't afford to mistreat anything. I'm wondering how one mistreats a lens without mistreating the camera at the same time. Especially on a one lens set-up. Good luck to you. :)

Sounds like something out of "Fifty Shades of Gray".:) :) :) Poor lens. Is the safe word "Sony"?

Haha, I only just saw this post!!

Let me clarify by mistreat. I like taking shots in the rain, on the rocks on the coast with all the sea spray, when I go hiking I carry the camera over my pack and shoulder on a sling strap - bashing into shrubs etc. I always thought the 15-85 was weather sealed..... I guess what I am after is something robust and reliable. :D

Out of interest of those who travel with two lenses, how do you do it?

I think you may find your self keeping the one lens on the camera, changing the way you shoot subjects at the long end or cropping more often - the crop difference between 100 and 135 is not huge.
But if I do carry two lenses, I rarely go anywhere without a daypack in which I can put the camera when I want to be discrete, so the second lens is in there (with spare card, battery and polariser). Or a bumbag.

Mind you, when I got my MFT rig for street shooting, I found a second MFT body with lens attanhed is smaller than the second APS-C lens I found myself carrying! Always ready :P

I usually carry a pack if I am in tourist mode (bumbags are illegal if you are from NZ/AUS), so 2 lenses is an option if the need is great.

In terms of my decision for what lens I was actually going to go with the 24-105, so was pretty excited with he new rumour of the new one coming out at the same time as the 5D4.

Lack of 5D4 Info

I was wondering same thing few days ago. Most likely they'll keep 5D4 quite safe until last minute so it doesn't impact 1DX2 sales. Like for me, this month there's event I'd love to carry 2 bodies. I already sold my second one to make room for next one, but until I know more about 5D4 I can't decide. If it turns out to be really bad, I'll just get 1DX2. If 5D4 is as good as I hope it to be, I'll certainly get that instead.

I doubt the 5D4 will best the 1DX2 on anything regarding the sensor with the sole exception of higher resolution. And even that will be completely negated by superior IQ of the 1DX2 after raising the ISO past a certain point. This was precisely the case between the 1DX and the 5D3. By ISO 400, the 1DX put out better overall IQ than the 5D3. Only at ISO 100 and 200 did the 5D3 arguably look better due to the slight megapixel advantage.

Thus, if one is not impressed by the 1DX2 sensor performance, my suggestion is to not put too much hope in the 5D4. It will not be better. At best, maybe, just maybe - the DR performance might be a little tiny bit better at low ISO but will sacrifice it more at higher ISO compared to the 1DX2. All depends how they 'tune' this sensor.

Now you're assuming things about why I'd want 5D4, and incorrectly so.

Reasons for me to wait 5D4:

-ISO100 for studio work
-Better video than 1DX2 (someone at Canon interview mentioned, not 100% confirmed though)
-Silent shutter
-Detacheable grip
-Price

Reasons for me to go for 1DX2:
-I occasionally would like to carry 2 sports bodies
-It's already available

Difficult choice, that's why I'm hoping they'd release the 5D4 specks soon so I can better compare/estimate which one to go for. Or dark horse contender 5DsR, which has most same reasons as I list above for 5D4, but the video.

Question re: 17-40L Flare

That looks normal to me. The new 16-35 f4L is slightly more flare resistant in my experience, but you'll still get a few green/red blotches along the flare axis even with that lens. And I agree about filters aggravating the issue. I wouldn't send it back on that basis.

I would check the lens for decentering while you're in the return period, though. That's a common problem with that lens (had to have mine repaired and it still was never right). See https://photographylife.com/what-is-a-decentered-lens

7D MK II + Sigma 50-100 f1.8 tracking: Roller coaster speed

Travelintrevor said:
I have read that the most challenging objects to track are the ones that rapidly approach camera. Is this true?

Not really, the toughest cases usually involved erratic movement with lots of acceleration and direction changes at relatively close focus distances. Something moving at a constant speed towards the camera can be tracked reasonably well by even many mirrorless cameras.

DXO claim 1DX2 new class leader

Eyes are easily deceived, hence optical illusions. The brain is also bad when it comes to "remembering."...

In the end, the best proof of something as absolute is math and science - not your eyes or brain. Ask any scientist about how reliable "eye witness" statements are vs something that is measurable/recordable.

Errr... in this instance, eye observations do not agree with DPReview's conclusion... and neither do the numbers from DXO. So how????

index.php
I don't know what you were looking at or comparing as you only posted the DXO graph.
I've attached a screenshot of the DPR RAW studio samples for the D5 and 1Dx-II.

What we are looking at here is the roughly 18% grey patch on the colorchecker (which corresponds with DXO's SNR-18% graph)

Lenses used in the DPR studio test:
Canon 85/1.8 vs Nikon 85/1.8

According to DXO lens test, The Canon 85/1.8 has about 0.1Ev more vignette @ f/5.6 and has in the range of 0.2-0.3Ev less transmission than the either of the Nikon 85/1.8 variants.

So the 1DX-II has roughly 0.3Ev less light at the sampling point given the relative position of the sampling point in the field of view.

Given that the Canon 1DX-II 18%patch looks extremely highly similar to the D5 18%patch even with 0.3Ev less light, is it not a fair assessment that the Canon 1Dx-II is slightly better. This happens to line up :P with the SNR18% graphs produced by DXO.

Oh wait...it's neuroatonomist...making smarmy comments about other posters on this site while lurking in a Sony thread...a "system" for which he takes extensive efforts to denigrate at every opportunity. How original. ::)

So, do you support dilbert's contention that the Sony Sony 24-70mm f/2.8GM 'kicks Canon's butt', or are you just engaging in more typically tangential tripe?

Which adapter for C/Y lenses on 5DsR? using Zeiss C/Y 16 mm F-Distagon

i have a Zeiss F-Distagon 16 mm with a Haoda CTX-EOS adapter that works well with my 5D2. However, on my 5DsR, the camera gives me a lens communication error (error 20), but only if I fully engage the lens with adapter (clicking sound when mounting the lens). When I unmount the lens by just a bit away from the click stop, the camera takes pictures with that lens; took a while to figure that one out. The error even occurs in Manual mode.

Is there a C/Y to EOS adapter that works well on 5DsR?

UPDATE:

it is a compound problem. At infinity focus the rear lens baffle interferes with the mirror on the 5DsR. Solution. Mount lens set to close focus, engage live view, re-set focus to infinity (or wherever needed), shoot in live view. When turning live view/camera off, first put lens to close focus again.

1DX2 illuminated focus points

Hi Jack,

Yeah, whilst the issue didn't appear to affect any other operation (as far as I have tested things), such an obvious and visual "featurette" does undermine your confidence in the product as a whole - if quality control missed something I noticed straight out the box, what else did they miss? From what I've read, each 1DX2 is assembled by a single person rather than on a more traditional production line. Sure we all have off days but the whole reason for the one-person-builds-it is to improve QC.

You also have to take a long term view. One of these days I might sell it (1DX3??) and any prospective buyer might ask what's up with the display points? Ah, but you only think it's an issue! Okay, then sell it to someone with lower standards than me!

Enjoy your weekend.

C300mkii Price Drop - $11,999.00

In the UK it's a straight price drop of over £2000 - from £11,994 to £9,594 (inc VAT). No indication this is a temporary offer and no need to claim for cashback etc. Should make the camera a lot more attractive to buyers. Strange time for the price drop when there is no competition - impossible to buy the FS7 at the moment and likely to stay that way for at least another month, and even when the FS7 does become re-available it will be more expensive than when it was initially released over 2 years ago! Strange time for a price drop....

A photojournalist who uses Canon comments on the EU and video limits.

The link does not work for me. ISE 500 error.

I am not Yon's biggest fan as I find him to be far too self promotional and never shy to use flammatory subjects to achieve more hits/fame etc.

I do quite a bit of video and have, over the years, encountered the 30-minute regulation only once. Frankly it is a non-issue, as if you know what is going to happen you plan accordingly. You may lose a second of image, perhaps two. Or you can stop recording during a break in proceedings before you get to 29:59.

It is such a rare occurrence I wonder why it gets discussed so much.

If you really want to frequently shoot continuous video for longer than 30 minute without a single 1-2 second pause to restart the clock, then perhaps you should not be using a DSLR.

You will also need plenty of batteries. When I am at an all day event with different sessions through the day, I plug my charger in, shoot, change battery charge one, replace repeat etc.

Canon product release

Hope you receive it soon. And please post some pictures and your review. Have fun.

Sunny,

Speaking of the devil, the 28mm macro, immediate backorder; I placed my order REALLY early, it should've shipped.

Translation to english, real launch date 1-3 months from now, except the backorder doesn't say how long the backorder is, so could be longer.

So, we have one more sales strategy for the books, indicate a ship date, and then when the day comes, it flips into backorder for the real date.

Shameful; Nikon would be proud of their marketing, makes them look like they're shipping product first when in fact they're just as bad with 6 month waits...

Ditching One Shot and shooting AI Servo fulltime

BL said:
So I've never owned a camera I felt confident enough to trust in AI Servo until I started shooting with the 1Dx. Old habits die hard though, and I'd still been toggling between one shot and AI-Servo based on subject matter. I've always held this pre-conceived, personally unfounded notion that One Shot would be more accurate than AI Servo on stationary subjects. Given how amazing I found AF accuracy to be on the 1Dx, I decided to test my theory by exclusively using Servo mode for all non moving subjects.

In the past month I've shot mostly portraits, some landscape, and quite a bit of macro. At the pixel level, I can't tell any difference in regards to focus accuracy between shots taken using One Shot vs. AI-Servo based on my real world use. Granted, I have my shutter release priority biased towards focus as opposed to release. I don't see myself using One Shot ever again as far as I'm concerned, and I appreciate not having to press a button or switch modes to engage Servo if something does start to happen unexpectedly.

Can anyone think of any cons to using AI servo fulltime and ditching One Shot if I I'm able to achieve the same level of accuracy? (ok yes, as a concession I'm taxing the battery, but battery life has become a total non issue for me having moved to a 1D body)

Thanks in advance!

Ive since switched to back button AF however i still have my DOF preview button set to toggle between servo and one shot AF. I cant say for sure yet on the 1dx2 but on 5d3 and 7d2, one shot focuses better in extremely low light. That is about the only benefit that is important to me. Being able to AF and then recompose is taken care of with back button af.

Another option i have configured is the AE lock button. I use that to recall a custom configuration that only enables AF in spot af mode. This allows me to quickly switch between some other af mode and spot af rather quickly. Even on the 1dx2 only a limited number of buttons support that. If i recall correctly only the AF off and ae lock buttons.

Mark II surpasses both the Nikon and Sony by nearly +0.5EV

Thank you for the explanation ace

Im just still pissed that I waited 4 years to see my pictures look the same at ISO 6400. Its actually a tough decision between using my 5dsr and 1dx mk2 even for sports bc the low light high ISO froze for a generation. I can get so much detail and noise reduce so well with the 5dsr that it gives me a better image than the 1dx mk2 but its lacks the autofocus of the 1dx mk2. If they had a 5,000 version of the 5dsr in a 1D body with the 1dx mk2's video capability and autofocus Id probably buy it and not use the 1dx mk2
