I found the graphite which is in the lenspen to clean lenses works pretty well when you dust a little on the filter thread with a brush.

When I have stuck filters on top of eachother I have resorted to putting them in the freezer and then holding the outer in in my hands to heat it up so that it expands more than the inner one. I wouldn't suggest freezing lenses on purpose though.

For polarizers, i usually go over them with my fingers before screwing them on. Anything to prevent them from being really dry.

Anyone had experiance with the EF100-400 f4.5-5.6L IS USM II & EF1.4EX III

I currently use the kenko DGX 1.4 converter a great deal with the new 100-400 which works extremely well on my 1D IV and the Sony A7RII but there have been some compatibility issues with the 5D3. Quality wise it is pretty close to the mark III canon. Here are a couple of examples, and these are also cropped since I rarely consider 560 (x1.3) long enough :) This teleconverter will also work with autofocus on older canons that don't officially focus at F8.

Review: Canon ImagePROGRAF Pro-1000

Hector1970 said:
Are Canon doing the opposite numbers wise with printers. Is a bigger number a better printer.
I thought it was Pro-100 --> Pro-10 ---> Pro-1 in order of importance (Pro-1 being top of the range).

That's not a Pixma Pro printer. It's the entry level of the ImagePROGRAPH line. You'll fined bigger (and more expensive model) in the line, i.e. the 4000. It's the Pixma Pro numbering scheme a bit unusual, probably it was made to mirror how Canon numbers cameras.

Hector1970 said:
a) Overly complicated

Where is written fun should be simple also? :D Is processing images in LR or PS easy? No...

Hector1970 said:
c) There are too many options up front, too many sliders, too many adjustments possible.

The "Pro" word should have made you aware of that. "Pros" like control to achieve the desired result. "You press the button, we do the rest" was Eastman motto, but aimed a truly amateurs...

Hector1970 said:
d) Its so hard straight out of the box to do a simple thing like a borderless print. You'd almost need a PhD in printing to work out how to get rid of borders

Setting "borderless printer" in the driver is so difficult? ;)

Hector1970 said:
e) The error messages particularly in Lightroom are bordering on useless to explain what's wrong

Sometimes application like LR can't do anything but reporting the error from the printer. Which may be or too uninformative, or too technical - and hope they are at least written using the correct syntax...

Hector1970 said:
g) Those preprinting routines the printer goes through are a right pain. Replace a cartridge and it does it all over again.

Guess Canon would avoid them if it could. Handling liquid stuff is usually more complex than handling solid one.

Hector1970 said:
h) While print profiles really improve the quality of the images its a nuisance too.

One reason is commercial (Canon may like to sell its own paper), the other is nor Canon nor Adobe control what 3rd party papers make available and their specifications. It looks to me it's the paper manufacturer in the best position to create generic profiles for its products. Anyway, most pros will make their own, or have them made.

Maybe some users may start to share the profiles they made (if they have rights to do so, of course), to help others.

Hector1970 said:
i) Custom paper profiles while excellent also require extra work

Or extra money if you outsource them ;) True, but the actual technology has no way to get rid of them. There are too many variables to control if you need the "optimal" results, and it's good you can create them as you need.

I made once the big mistake of buying an HP PhotoSmart D7260 which didn't support custom profiles and offered only two "ICC profiles": AdobeRGB and RGB (a bit strange for a printer...) Then attempted to process the images itself. Usually returning a dreadful result - it was designed around a very simple "direct-to-printer" workflow.

Since I switched to a Pro-10 I became much happier.

Hector1970 said:
j) Its an expensive business. I don't mind paying for Ink or Paper. Having to keep replacing Ink is very irratating. The printers are so big surely there is room for much bigger ink sizes.

The ImagePROGRAPH has bigger cartridges (the Pro-1 has also bigger ones than the -10 and -100) - just look at how much they cost. Not feasible for printers aimed at a different market. Many Pixma Pro users may prefer to pay $12 than $80 to replace a single cartridge - even if for the same ink used they pay a little more - but they do diluted in a longer time. Sure, if you print a lot you need a printer designed for a lower cost per print.

Many business and - many hobbies as well - are expensive. The paints and pastels my sister uses for her artwork are expensive as well.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Talk [CR1]

I've got to say that I really do not understand the demand for GPS. Nothing against it. I just don't understand it.

With GPS one does give up some privacy, just like with a cell phone or your car's navigation system.
<snip>
Any file that I put on the web has had the metadata removed from it, so I have no worries about people data-mining my pictures.....

Besides, On the Day I got my 7D2 I turned the GPS off....... I suppose that some day I should turn it on to test that it works..... maybe in 2018.... or 2019....

For me, GPS is a feature that has no appeal.... but I am not self centered enough to demand that nobody gets it. After all, Canon would not have put the feature in if there was not a significant demand for it and probably figures it will increase sales.

GPS and wifi can both be turned off. Touch screen too. So these should be non-issues.
I leave my phone Location service (GPS) off 98% of the time, but every once in a while it is extremely useful.
One of my friends uses his 6D GPS when hiking, because it tracks his route, which he likes to use later.

I would probably leave GPS and Wifi off most of the time on my 5DIV when/if I get it, but I'll be glad to have the option.

They aren't "issues" with me either (GPS / wifi). Just don't care about them nor do I care for them.

If it is on the camera it is on the camera. If it ain't, I am fine with that too.

Love touch screens. :)

1DX owners are you upgrading to the 1DX Mark II?

applecider said:
Schultzie what did you get for 1dx?

Buy body or kit w or wo hard drive curious?

From my prior list:
applecider said:
Still on the fence, will a switch allow me to get photos that I can't now?:

Pros for me:

-More F8 points in wider spread, better autofocus with all lenses
-Possible better high iso noise (as yet undocumented to me)?more pliable files
-Possible better DR in lower iso again show me the proof
-Reasonable cost-the dollar yen will probably be worse in a year or two
-CFast card speed
-GPS
-available while I can still use heavy equipment
-higher Mp count better for cropping "reach"

Cons for me:

-inconvenience of switching (selling 1dx, etc.)

Not important to me I'll take them, just not important to a buy decision:

-higher frame rate
-antiflicker
-4K

This list is still developing so reading the new owners comments in a vacuum (to prevent GAS contact).

I add the 5d IV factors to push me toward 5d4 rather than Dx mii

->30 MP
- same f8 focus as Dx mii
- same high iso as mii, lower iso DR improvements
- 7 or more fps

I note again that Roger at lens rentals says that high MP makes all lenses better, and at least in some recent posts art Morris is singing the praise for the 5 D SR .

I ditched my 5dsr in favor of the 1dxii. While the images were great and sharp, everything else about it was a big disappointment. Even the AF system which shares the same functions as the 7d2 and 1dxii was very slow with moving objects. Even the 7dmarkii was noticeably better at tracking. The camera you use should be based on the system and not just sensor performance. Im sure the 5d4 will be a winner at what it does. Just keep in mind more MP doesnt automatically make it better. It can in fact slow down everything else in the camera and in post processing. Keep your passion at heart and decide what you really need for the kinds of photos you shoot.

Urgent - canon 1dx mark II. 4k files stutter

thetechhimself said:
So pro's who do 4k day in day out for video production studios use high end Mac Pro's with customized specs for large SSDs, higher end GPUs, and lots of ram. (Or 15" Macbook Pro Retina's with customized highest CPU and 1TB SSD's, or 5k iMac's with customized SSD, higher end GPU, higher end CPU and lots of RAM). You can use a PC, but Mac's have a good ecosystem for sharing files in addition to some apps being Apple only (final cut) plus they have good hardware specs compared to their PC counterparts, of course because of that and the "Apple Tax", Macs aren't cheap obviously.

Not disagreeing with you, but just wanted to highlight that there are plenty of quality (and many would argue better) options when it comes to power. For laptops the ThinkPad P70 looks good, Dell's Precision 7710 and a few others. Many of these high-end laptops are fully customisable and are designed for serious power users. Plus they are built like tanks - similar in quality to the 1DXs.

Canon Germany Summer Promotion - May 1st until July 31st 2016

Funny! Canon seems to be late with their promotions lately.

I already thought there wouldn't be a Summer Promotion this year because of all the other promos and because they didn't show anything on their HP until a few days ago. But here it is:
  • check out http://www.canon.de/for_home/promotions/
  • buy May 1st until July 31st
  • register until August 31st
  • get up to 150 EUR cashback and up to 350 EUR deposit (whatever that means, couldn't find it in the terms and conditions)

Products included:
  • from EOS M3 and 100D (I thought that was discontinued) to all the EOs 5D units
  • a lot of PowerShots and Legiras
  • 430 EX III-RT and CS100
  • lenses from the two pancakes up to the f4 L zooms (w/o 17-40L)

Enjoy your GAS.

Could the 7D-iii be closer than we might think???

We often take stills lenses and remount them for specialist cinematography use (sometimes adding or replacing certain elements). Both Nikon & Canon have lenses that are very good and consistant and others that whilst they wear a L red ring are not so good on the Canon side. Often lenses of the same type vary and we return those that dont cut it to the manufacturers or dealers.
The 7D MKII had the market pretty much to itself as did the MK1 before it. The Nikon D500 will change the game and with it Canon will need to revise quicker.

Some say that Canon has too many cameras in its range but Sony are maintaining their first three R series cameras along side the three new ones an in the UK and are running ads showing all six full frame cameras together. Ive long held the view Canon can add a camera to either sit above the 6D or sit below it if they move the 6D MKII to compete with Nikon D750 and still maintain the 5D MKIV sales niche models are all the rage these days.

Patent: EF-M 15-50mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

While RoBoSam certainly have been more prolific than Canon in producing M mount lenses, I'm not sure if eight or so lenses constitutes "a ton" :) I was seriously considering the Rokinon 12mm f/2, but I fear I would eventually loose interest in a fully manual lens. I guess I'm just too lazy. Hopefully the new prime will enlighten an army of macro-enthusiasts to go out and purchase enough Ms so that Sigma will show the mount a little love. We can but hope.

5D MkIII spontaneously shuts down

j-nord said:
I assume stiffer/stronger springs in the shutter system to allow for faster fps and longer shutter life = more noise. This comes down to the physical shutter system not some software tweak. Would you rather compromise the shutter life to reduce the sound a little?

The 1D series uses two motors, one to open, one to close the shutter. They move the shutter very fast, and have to stop very fast. Even with the motors decelerating the shutter as it approaches the limits, and with additional sound cushioning, it still makes a loud noise. It really is comparable to Neuro's example of racing engine noise versus my 4 cyl Subaru aircraft derived engine. The 7D MK II uses something similar, but has a lower voltage battery to drive those motors.

New Canon 24-105mm L IS II Lens ?

Rob Carter said:
I cannot stress too strongly about weight reduction. With claims of DSLR quality from an Apple phones I can see why more and more people are not carrying a ‘brick’ around. For my leisure time I go walking, where at one time I would see a lot of DSLR cameras on the fells and peaks I no longer see them. Everybody uses their camera phone.

A situation that Canon must be well aware of but unable to effectively do anything about.
Smart phone cameras are a fixed focal length, no manual controls, jpg only, etc, hardly comparable with DSLR kits. If your main concern is weight rather than the countless advantages of good glass and DSLR then, by all means use your iPhone... There is little to no room to make a brick of glass any lighter.
