Lucky 1DX II Owners- lenses used and comments please?

nvsravank said:
I have been using it with the 85L and single shot AF with face detection is good. Some missed shots as I am taking pictures of a 3 year old. AI servo was better. Not one missed focus. All shot at f1.2.
So happy camper here.

So Close and yet so far.

Got my brand spanking new 1DXII but it can't access any of my CF cards and won't let me format them. It won't accept a formatted card from my computer or 5DIII.

What a buzz kill.

Any suggestions? I am waiting for support from Canon.

Thanks.

Nikon D5 Sensor Score from DXOMark

I think there is an underlying consistency: I think he (and others) simply believe that Canon is acting dishonestly. The reasoning goes something like this:

If Canon "has" the tech for better DR, why don't they put it in? It can only be to use their position to manipulate the market and soak more money from their customers. If Canon doesn't "have" the tech, then they're lying to us about how innovative they are, and they're just stringing-along their customers to keep them hooked on Canon gear until they can "get" the tech. Because if people found out that they had nothing, NOTHING!!, all their customers would flee and they'd collapse in flames. In either case, Canon is being dishonest. But what about Nikon? Well, Nikon has proved they're honest by putting the best sensors in their products, even at the low-end; so if the D5 drops off a bit then that was an honest choice based on need, rather than a manipulative choice based on greed.

Many of the DRummers ascribe human emotion to corporations, when there's nothing personal or emotional about it: they're just trying to generate profit for their shareholders and bonuses for the execs. That's just how business works.

Oh, I don't think Canon is being dishonest, I simply believe they don't (or at least didn't at the time) have the technology developed.

What appears to have happened is that Canon essentially stopped funding R&D into building better sensors for DSLRs. Now it may be that Canon were stuck with some engineering problems that took longer than others to resolve to move forward but my suspicion is that Canon decided that what they had was "good enough" for them to generate sales with and diverted money elsewhere. As you rightly put it, this would have let them save money on sensor R&D to generate better profit.

All companies do this. Apple, you could argue, is the worst offender. They've just bumped their phones up to 2GB of RAM because up until just recently 1 GB was 'good enough'.

I'd argue that companies which put 'good enough' into their product are best serving a wide customer base. More than enough adds cost with questionable value.

It's up to both the vendor and the consumer to determine what 'good enough' is and what a reasonable price is. When those determinations align, thumbs up.

A New Full Frame Zoom Coming in 2016 [CR2]

Woody said:
Presently, I cannot think of devices that can produce the same image quality as large scale sensors. If, however, digital software manipulation in cell phones is able to produce the same effect (high ISO, bokeh and speed), then, yes, I agree the age of Canikon is over.

It's only a matter of time before Apple starts using clustered sensors, the first dual sensor prototypes are already in the rumor mill. Cellphone IQ is going to keep going up.
The 1DX has nothing to worry about but Rebels are going to become more and more questionable as time goes by.
I still suspect that the eventual release of a Full Frame Rebel isn't out of the question.

I'm actually still kind of shocked that Canon doesn't have an Android phone. It's an open platform and they're excellent hardware manufacturers, it would probably take them all of a week to come up with something that takes phone calls and has a great camera. Not to mention the option of getting stock Android is a luxury right now, the less they mess with it the better.
At the very least they need to sell something as an accessory. The DxO One is probably on the right track, their implementation is just horrible, that thing does not look vacation friendly at all.

Canon just needs to make a hard case for the iPhone with a big juicy battery and nice camera built in. Maybe give it some expansion memory and an extra port.
Heck, if anyone would make an iPhone case with a big battery and expandable memory it would sell like hotcakes.
That or something super tiny but still better quality than the camera on your phone, if you can give people a camera that's even more convenient than digging your phone out of your pocket, that would sell.
People will pay for a better camera, but it needs to complement their existing device.

If you upgrade to 1Dx M2 from 1Dx, how has your menu settings changed

john1970 said:
So far I have three menu tabs in my My Menu Settings:

1) General Camera Settings: Format Card, Battery Info, ISO Settings, Continuous Shooting Speed, Lens Drive when AF impossible
2) AF: Tracking Sensitivity, Accel/Decel tracking, AF pt auto switching, AI servo 1st image priority, AI Servo 2nd image priority, AF method,
3) Movie: Movie Servo AF Speed, Movie Servo AF, Movie rec quality, Movie Servo AF track sensitivity
Sound recording.

Good luck,

John

I have something similar on the 1st two tabs though have frames in HDR on the first tab. I don't shot video so the third dab is GPS, mirror lockup, .. Once I get my setup finish I'll share my thoughts.

Sell our email or hacked?

Well, I am going to have to eat crow.

I opened my spam filter, which is almost 100% efficient, and there was a ton of Spam directed to my Canon Rumors email that is only known to CR and Google. Other Google email address aliases are not receiving the spam, so it is very suspicious. I have changed to a new email (alias) and will see if that generates spam.

I seldom look in my spam folder, and only two days ago did I change Thunderbird to show both sender and recipient. That caused all those spam emails to pop up.

I had previously sent a e-mail to the CR owner, Craig and he replied that he would ask his admin to check it out. I've sent another and will monitor for spam sent to the new address.

If you can, change the email address used for Canon Rumors to a unique one and see if spam starts arriving at the new address.

One question:

If Canon's Low-ISO Dynamic Ranges [totally or almost] catches up with Sony's one, will we all be able to complain ONLY about the presence of the AA-filter on most Canon cameras?

Oh, low-ISO DR is sooo last year. Given the D5's definitely non-ISO-invariant DR results, now it's again fashionable to complain about high ISO performance instead!
Wondering how dxomark going to score 80d. Probably 80d might have better DR than D5.. If it is true, it is going to be funny when someone starts a thread telling how Canon 80d is better than D5 based on DXOmark numbers.

I suspect DxO gives a lot of weightage to color depth, which in Canon sensors is still is behind Sonikon... so DxO will be more than happy not to tweak their algorithm to keep the 80D behind. ;D

Hello...Anyone else from the UK?

No waaay, you don't post in the Jersey Wildlife and Insects of the Channel Islands groups on Facebook, do you, krisbell? I was in Jersey for almost 6 months from last summer, training at Durrell (Jersey Zoo) and doing a few courses at the Durrell Academy!

I'm back home now, for the time being, in Wallasey, on the Wirral Peninsula, Sunny Merseyside! Someone above mentioned Wakefield; half my family's over there (Normanton and Wakefield) and I frequent the Cairngorms in Scottish Highlands too, my Mum & her husband have wee hotel up on the Speyside whiskey trail, not too far from the Highland Wildlife Park and the RSPB's Osprey Centre :D
Khufu said:
Also, regarding Jersey: I saw (or knowingly ID'd, as I'm learning) my first Firecrests, Kingfishers, Rock Pipits, Cattle Egrets, Marsh Harriers and Peregrine Falcons there last year! Loads of massive toads, sunning lizards on some ruins, lots of Kestrels, Hedgehogs, Red Squirrels... COWS! loads of pics and videos of Insects I'm yet to sort through and ID...

Yes I very occasionally post in the Jersey Wildlife and Insects Facebook group - but I do mean very rarely. You did well to see firecrests and kingfishers as they arent all that common in Jersey. Toads, lizards, cows, kestrels, hedgehogs and squirrels are everywhere. Let me know when you are next visiting and we'll go out and bother some critters.

Nice images here... love Kaneohe on Oahu and Makapuu is awesome but we ended up buying a place in Maui up country. Love the snorkeling/diving there, especially Honolua Bay... the best IMO. Both of my sons have Hawaiian names, that how much we dig the islands. Maui no ka oi !!!

BTW, isn't there another Maui guy here on the forum?

Question for the members here... going to dedicate a 5D3 to UW work. Any housing recommended?

Honu at Kahekili...

Awesome shot Pookie.

Did you use a filter for this?

Sek

Hi Sek, Thanks... no filter. I think this was either a D10 or D20. Prob a D10 first gen. Just recently put one of my 5D3's into a UW housing for surf and sea work. Will be in Maui for an extended vacation soon so I hope to really test it out. Love the D series UW Canon's but they can't compete with DSLR... for snorkeling they are fun though and not much of an investment. I def recommend them for light weight UW work. I have 3 of them for different family members when they head off for the beach. I've also pushed them way past the max depth when freediving almost every time I go out.

Patent: EF-M 9-17mm f/3.5-5 STM

This is not a lens the M series needs right now with the excellent performing 11-22mm lens. Just like the 9-18mm 3.5-4.5 rumored lens from last month. Canon seems to be out of touch with reality at the moment. The macro lens they just released is not going to get people to buy into the M system any more (except for a few niche people who take specialty photographs). Release exciting lenses and maybe people will begin to get excited about this system.

Care to suggest some 'exciting' lenses?

I can't speak for Harold, but I would have found an EF-M 60mm f/2.8 IS macro to be very "exciting". Oh, to have a "pocketable" version of my beloved EF 100 f/2.8L IS for portraits and small stuff. I'm not dissing the new little 28, it just doesn't have enough versatility to excite me. (And yes, I know the 60 would be quite a bit larger than the 28).

The long rumored and waited for EF-M 35 f/1.8 IS is titallating as well 8)

Paul C Buff Einstein e640 after 6 months

Snafoo said:
I have two AB800s, not Einsteins (alas), but my experience has been identical to yours - love the lights, love the Vagabond, hate the Cyber Commander. I suspect that Paul C designed the GUI himself but should have brought in someone with GUI design experience, because it definitely looks home-built. I would be more than willing to buy a new Commander if it had a more modern, user-friendly GUI.

Maybe you are getting your wish. The CST's are now version II, and the CC itself is out of stock...

Anything shot with the EOS M3

Thought I'd start a topic for images off this great little camera.

Here is one of my first from a trip to Norfolk: the ruined church of St Felix which used to stand in the medieval village of Babingley, all trace of which has now gone. The old church stands in the grounds of the royal Sandringham estate.

M3 + 55-200 EF-M lens @ f6.3, 1/125, ISO 100. Manfrotto Befree tripod. I shot this at both f/8 and wide open, and although the f/8 shot is a tiny bit sharper the wide open shot had the better fleeting light, which was lasting for just seconds.

Sony FE 70-200 f2.8 GM - Crazzy price tag, what your thoughts?

99.9% of "rumors" you see on SAR worth zero. It's nothing but cheap clickbait and random junk. The guy who runs it is a fat troll and a total douche. So I wouldn't believe everything you see there. Considering the current 70-200 f/2.8 G II costs $3k, it would be logical to say the E mount version won't cost less.

5DS Vs 5DSR?

Cheekysascha said:
I mainly do landscapes & some action stuff with athletes/friends but for that I have my 1DX so I'm looking at the 5DS to do my landscape work with/portraits, however looking at the whole no low pass filter vs with one of the two models I don't really know if there's a need for me to get the 5dsr over the 5ds

So i'm curious for those of you who had to choose between the S and SR which one did you end up going for? and what kind of photography are you using it for?

Also is there any reason for me to wait for the 5D4 if I already have a 1DX and 5D3 and don't shoot any video?

I chose the 5Ds because it was about 10% cheaper, and I've seen enough moiré in test shots to make me wonder (see the DPR shots posted above). Also even if the -R is sharper (I'm neutral on the subject), it's not worth the extra money for me. I'm shooting wildlife and macro, but also a bit of landscape and other stuff.

Bird feathers have a lot of repeating, close, parallel filaments. I'd be surprised if there wasn't moiré in quite a few of them. As for 'you can't get back sharpness' - it seems people are divided on this, some claiming that AA filter 'softness' is attuned and judicious sharpening can indeed match the 'extra sharpness' of an AA-free (or AA-neutralised) sensor. Finally, as someone else said, even the 5Ds experiences moiré on occasion, as any camera can - I was surprised to see some already, only having had the camera a couple of weeks, in the roof tiles of a cityscape shot. But each to their own...
