Zeiss 50mm Makro – Milvus vs. Makro-planar

Thanks for your input, moreorless. I usually have my Sigma 35mm with me when I need wider than 100mm, and wide open, the 50mm Makro only impresses me with its center performance.

And thanks to you Zeidora, your input is very appreciated.

I will shortly order the 100mm Milvus. I see what is meant by 'Zeiss micro-contrast' and that is primarily guided by decision. How does Zeiss achieve this? Very precise grinding? Proprietary glass formulation? Relatively few elements? The makro-planar design? All of these?

I get the limitations, functionality of the forum... just wishful thinking, that's all.

Or... on the other hand... did I overlook a setting somewhere?

Good suggestion.

The ludicrously large 1d series

LSXPhotog said:
The 1D series exists for a very particular group of photographer. The idea that it's the best camera Canon makes is only true to the extent of build quality, speed, and perhaps low light and button customization. It doesn't mean it's the best camera for you or that you should even consider it just because it's the 1-series. If the features it greatly excels at are something you need, the 1-series is for you. If you don't, look elsewhere.

I personally find myself on the fence of getting a 1-series each year, and talk myself out of it. I shoot a lot of motorsports and think the 1DX2 would kill it for me, but my magazine clients probably wouldn't even recognize the improvements over the 7D2 files I'm turning in now. If I saw myself shooting more sports, guaranteed I would. If I find myself in increasingly harsh climates, I would.

But in all reality, I primarily shoot automotive magazine features, portraits, weddings, real estate, and motorsports. There are better options from Canon for me, such as the 5D3, 6D, and 7D2 that I'm using now. If I bought a 1DX2, it would replace/demote my 7D2 for motorsports only and not replace my 5D3 for its smaller size I enjoy for 90% of my work or the WiFi and lightness I love in the 6D for real estate and travel. You'd want a $6,000 camera to be the one to make you the most money and I don't see that being the case right now for me.

That said, I'm really considering a 5DSR if the 5D4 doesn't fit the bill for me.

Right on, good post! I'll still love my 6D and 11-24 combo.

Canon's Recent Refurb Sale Observation

wsmith96 said:
I found that the lens selections Canon put on sale on their refurb site are very similar to the rumors we are hearing about.

Here's what they have on sale:

70-300 IS USM
24-105 IS USM
50 1.4 USM
85 1.8 USM
17-40 USM

We've been talking about an updated FF non L zoom, a lens update that might be surprising (24-105), a new 50mm on the horizon, Sigma's coming out with a new 85, and the 17-40 is a gimme since the 16-35 F/4 came out.

I'm thinking that these are your lens updates that we are going to see for the remainder of the year (other than the 17-40). But I may be smoking something too....

From CR's new post, looks like the 24-105 was the surprise lens :) Now, c'mon 50mm!

Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG Art Coming to Photokina [CR3]

photojoern.de said:
Please, community, can anybody explain: why should I want to own the lens?

If price was not really a factor in my decision, I would probably already have the 85mm from Canon in my bag.

If I want to make portraits handheld, the Canon 100mm 2.8 IS II Macro would give me the same low-light performance (f2.8 with 4 stops IS => equals f 1.2). Yes, not the same boquet, but f1.4 has an extremely shallow depth of field and you will have an extremely hard time to get the eyes tack sharp. Hard enough already with the f 2.8. And the image quality of the 100mm f2.8 is stunning. Alternatively, the 70-200 f2.8 IS L zooms from Tamron and Canon give you similar quality with more flexibility in focal length.

It would have made it´s way into my bag with an IS in it, giving it true uniqueness in application (handheld low light). Yes, for the cost of added weight, but hey: that´s always the price.

Any comments? Am I wrong? What piece am I missing?
Thanks, cheers,
Jörn

Hi Jörn!

You wrote: "(f2.8 with 4 stops IS => equals f 1.2)". That's the bit that you're not quite thinking about correctly.

The "rule-of thumb" for shooting handheld without any kind of stabilisation is that you want a shutter speed roughly 1/focal length of the lens: e.g. 1/100th second for a Canon 100mm 2.8 lens.

If that lens had 1-stop equiv. IS, you could safely shoot at 1/50th sec, with 2-stops IS @ 1/25th sec...4-stops @ 1/6th second. But at 1/6th of a second, any motion of the subject matter in the scene will be much more blurred than if you were shooting at 1/100th of a second.

So while IS helps stabilise your movements, it does nothing for the movement of your subject. A lens with a wider aperture (e.g. an 85mm 1.4) lets in more light, so the shutter speed can be higher and subject movement captured reduced.

Those two extra stops available at f/1.4 vs. f/2.8 give you a greater ability control or eliminate subject motion, as well as isolate your subject using shallower depth of field - a look that is very much de rigueur these days, to the detriment of many images IMHO. And while shooting wide open at f/1.4 is challenging, practice and good technique will allow you to achieve a high proportion of images with the focus where you want it to be.

I agree with you that the Canon 100mm L IS is a fantastic lens - I'd like to add it to my kit one day, despite already owning Canon's 85mm 1.2 - to me they serve different shooting scenarios.

Cheers,
d.

Lens advice for Pearl Harbor tour

This morning, my son (age 17) and I completed the Arizona Memorial, Missouri and Pacific Air Museum tours. I took my 5DsR with EF 16-35 f/4 IS and CPL mounted and captured lots of great shots. I was surprised how well the IS on this lens performed at slow shutter speeds hand held. I took quite a few interior shots on the Missouri and air museum at 1/10 of a second, down to 1/2 second and almost all looked sharp at maximum zoom on the LCD. It will be some time before I have time to process any pictures, so hopefully they look nearly as good on the computer screen.

My original plan had been to have my son carry my EOS M with the adapter and 24-70 f/4 IS mounted and a body cap in a pocket. That way, I could swap lenses later. Unfortunately in the rush to get out the door early, we forgot the M adapter, so had no way to mount the 24-70 when we got there, so my son ended up just using the M with the 22 f/2 lens and I got by with one EF lens.

If I had to do it again, I think I would take the 24-70 instead of the 16-35 however. 16-23mm was handy for some shots in tight quarters inside the Missouri and the inside exhibits at the air museum. But, there were more times I wished I had more than 35mm on the long end. The preference for the std. zoom over the UWA zoom probably reflects the way I shoot, I tend to prefer longer lenses generally anyway and am not good at framing effective UWA shots. The UWA could certainly be the right choice for another photographer. There was another Canon shooter on our bus to the Missouri and he was using a 5D2 and 24-105 f/4. He said there were only a few shots where he needed a wider lens and took multiple shots for a pano in those cases.

Anyway, I found this thread to be helpful in my gear selection and general information for the Pearl Harbor tour. I highly recommend the Arizona Memorial and Missouri tour to anybody who visits Honolulu. The tours were one of the highlights of our visit here.

1DX Mark II buffer?

So I was really excited for the 170 image raw buffer. But my camera only shows 59 shots as the remaining shots with the included Cfast 64gb card. I also tried removing the CF card and still is the same.

Speaking of CF card, I have a Sandisk Extreme Pro 64GB UDMA7 card and that only shows 59 shots as well. In the manual it says 59 shots for Standard and 73 for Highspeed/UDMA7.

Is anyone seeing low buffer counts?

Don;t have a 1Dx II yet, but based upon my experience with the 1Dx I believe that the 170 buffer = internal buffer of 59 shots plus while this is happening the buffer will be written to the Cfast card so more shoots can be occur. In the end there will be 59 shoots in the buffer and 111 shots written to the card when the camera slows down.

At some lower FPS the buffer will either be infinite or much larger. I wish Canon would report the maximum burst rate at 10 FPS, 11 FPS, 12 FPS as well as at 14 FPS.

A reasonable guesstimate for shots written to the card would be S=111*14/F where S is the number of shots and F is the selected FPS assuming comparable bandwidth from the buffer to card at all rates. At 10 FPS this would be 155 shots on the card plus the 59 in the buffer or 21.4 seconds before a lag. YMMV

I should have called that a reasonable lower limit guesstimate since it didn't account for any overlap/pipelining.

My second CFast card arrived so I gathered some empirical data. Wasn't sure of the test shooting conditions for the spec so I set the camera up for minimal processing: high speed at 10fps (I'd already set this for my use), 40 STM in manual focus (it was already mounted with lens cap on ;-), white balance K 5500, eval metering, 1/2000, f2.8, ISO 100, ALO/... off, and CFast card only. I reformatted the card and reset the file counter between tests to simplify tallying the results.

The first test with RAW+L (forgot to turn off jpg) clicked off 728 frames (13 GB) before I though I heard a hesitation. Card showed 10fps the whole time with no dropped frames, so it might have gone longer if I held the shutter button down.

The second test with RAW only clicked off 1806 frames (31 GB) before I stopped - 3 minutes worth at 10fps. I was surprised that it took some effort to hold the shutter button down that long.

YMMV. Of course, nobody actually shoots that way. You would likely turn on AI servo, linked metering, etc. which takes some processing power and might affect the results. Someone else can experiment with settings and other FPS.

This is not something that I'd expect to do much in practice, but its nice to know its possible. I've done something similar with the M3 a few times to capture a long sequence of images. In JPG only mode you can shoot 4+ FPS until the card is full on the M3.
Wow, you've gone way beyond what anyone could expect over the internet. Gosh, if it were my camera I would have called it a day at 400shots. I applaud you for your commitment to methodology.

Toshiba Aerocast wifi hard drive for back-ups?

An update.
Following help from the good CR folks through the EOS M forum, I've gone with the following option. Shoot Raw + S2 (2300 x 1500 pixels); transfer the S2 files via wifi to a Lenovo 7inch tablet (takes about 1 sec per image (2 minutes for 120 images) which is plenty fast for me); move files to micro-SD card in tablet. The challenge was finding out the micro-SD card had to be labelled before I was able to write files to it.
I've bought a 3rd 32GB SD card and so will not remove images from the SD card.
This doesn't back-up the Raw files, but in the unlikely event of losing or destroying the camera, I will have reasonable jpgs backed up, sufficient for memories, but not for large prints.
I will see how fast the Camera Connect Raw-jpg conversion takes and what file size it produces and report back.

EOS Mirrorless FF Like the Leica Q

I've long been fond of the Q. It even has the 28mm FF FOV I love.

I see tremendous value in Canon offering a fixed lens FF mirrorless a la the Sony RX1R I/II and Leica Q. It will give them 'batting practice' to get the mirrorless fundamentals right (viewfinder, battery, handling, controls, etc.) before going all-in with interchangeable FF mirrorless.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Talk [CR2]

If the speculation is right about an August annoucement this would be strange timing. Canon annouced the
5D MKIII on March 2nd 2012 and the camera went on sale at the end of the same month, it also coincided with 25 years since the EOS system launch and Canon 75th anniversary.
Photokina begins this year on September 20th slightly later than recent years and likely a good month after an August annoucement, contrast that with the 6D launch which was September 17th the day before Photokina 2012 (it went on sale at the end of November).
If Canon do annouce the 5D MKIV in August is this allowing for annoucing the 6D MKII just before or during Photokina 2016 with a later on-sale date much like the 1D X MKII and the original 6D.
Both these cameras are the oldest in the line up of both DSLRs and the M series cameras although the 7D had the longest recent production cycle being five years (the 7D MKII will not last that long given the Nikon D500).

Polaroid 600SE - The Goose

Mt Spokane Photography said:
Refrigerate your polaroid film and it will be good for years.

It sounds like you are lucky. Many or even most of the old polaroid cameras I've found had acid from the developer make a mess inside the camera. The rollers are stainless steel. but other parts corrode.

Occasionally, I find a estate sale with a box of old polaroid film, long out of date. I tried it and, while it works, even over developing it is not enough. I've sold it on ebay explaining the issue, but it gets snapped up quickly.

Thanks... I've shot with Polaroids for quite sometime. I have a temp controlled fridge for all my film... 4x5, 120, etc.

Part of the reason I waited so long to get this Goose was due to the miserable state of almost every 600SE or MUP sold on eBay or at auction. In Japan there are more choices but also much more pricey. The M adapter for this 600SE cost 250$ and I bought it long before I had found this one while in Tokyo.

I've grown exceptionally tired of expired polaroid film. More times than not it's a complete waste of time. The case of 3000b has a 2017 expiration date so I hope it lasts for some time. The 100c was made up until I believe March of this years so it's fine. I know color has a shorter shelf life so I bought smaller amounts.

If I can find a CB70 I'll shoot some 600 from the Impossible project but it's not really instant film as it can take over 30 minutes to develop. I've found their film to be hit or miss actually. Then hopefully the new 55 will come though and I can put a 545i back on it. I know it won't cover the entire area but might be fun.

The real fun is now the 120 back on this guy... I have some "fun" shoots coming up when I get a break and looking forward to putting this guy in play. Tested it tonight with a old skool cable to my Eli's and it worked beautifully.

what's missing from the 1DX M2?

My iPhone makes and receives calls with no issue, what's the point of having a Camera if it won't make a phone call ?? I ask you.

Hey Edward, other than the phone issue what's your overall assessment of your new toy and what are the new features/modifications you like the most?

Jack

Hi Jack, I'll be putting the 1Dx II through a fuller test starting next week, will be in Sth Africa, Botswana & Kenya for 4 weeks.

So far I'm impressed with the upgrades to the AF, the remaining features I see as incremental to the 1Dx, the other feature though that's new that I do like is the touch AF on video, it may get me to do more video work than I've done before.

I didn't think there was too much to improve on the 1Dx, but what has been improved I believe will pay off, time will tell.

Post some pics of your trip Edward, and have fun.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Being Tested by Photographers

dilbert said:
LoneRider said:
...
I've written this more than once, but for the middle weight, Sony and Nikon competition, the 6D-ii can come in without DPAF at 36MP @4FPS at $2500. Keep the 5D-iv as the jack of all, king of the wedding/event, with a fast'ish 7 (maybe 8) FPS, and a killer quiet 3-4FPS mode.

We will see, and I'm likely talking out my arse. But the 5D-iv has to be, must be, the king of weddings and events, and have enough differentiation to get Tom, Dick, and Harry's like me to willingly plop down $3500. And there will be Canon users who want ~36MP at a reasonable price, and that is where a 6D-ii can slot in. With the 5DS-ii getting a much better AF, and >50MP.

Well if Tom, Dick and Harry are all paid photographers (doing weddings/events) then they can pony up the cash for the 1DXII. If you are Canon, don't you want people making money from your kit spending more on Canon? Why would you want to sell a $3600 camera to a paid professional when really you want that person buying the $6000 camera?

The 6DII will not have more MP than the 5DIV, just as the 6D has less than the 5DIII. There's a certain amount of product pedigree there. That the 1DXII has less MP than other Canon cameras is made up for in pedigree by body and other features.

I've just read this whole thread. I have a 5D3 and a 7D2. I used the 1DX last week, sensor noise was great, shutter noise was awful. Each "photographer" has his/her own requirements for their styles. We shouldn't have to pay for the top-end cameras if what we have suits our needs. My 5D3 may never leave my bag. I have yet to want to smash it on the floor because of it's stupidly-archaic single sensor, because I needed that extra 1/2 stop of DR or because the metering wasn't linked to the AF point. I shot, I adapted, I moved on. I'm not sure why I should have to pay $6000 for a camera that I can make great images with..your point is lost with me.

The 5DS/R's came out, I pondered, I didn't buy. My work requires more low-light/high iso noise-control than MP. Someone will need this, that's why it was invented. If the 5D4 has many of the features that my 7D2 has, awesome. The fact that those features will be on a full-frame with perhaps a few more tweaks: awesomerer ;).

I think people have to really sit down and think out their reasons for upgrading. When their current gear limits their ability to perform, upgrade. I've never been concerned with DXO/DR/how many picolitres or whatever size my pixels are. If the photos are good, they're good! Look back at Sports Illustrated and see how many spectacular shots were taken with "old/useless" tech contained in the 1D4. Sometimes our G.A.S. invades our logic. I'm guilty of that sometimes. I am currently struggling with the 5D4/1DX2 upgrade question. It won't be answered for a few months, so until then, I'll just keep on using my old tech and making money.

Canon is in this business to make money. They market to sell. That's it. They don't give a rat's arse if people switch to Nikon. They weren't that invested in Canon anyway. I'd lose tens of thousands to switch, so I won't. Easy decision. I'm not a fanboy either. I just dumped my Canon 50mm for a Sigma ART and am extremely happy. I buy what I need to produce results for my clients.

As far as dual CFast cards, why would they include this in the 5D4 and not in the 1DX2? They won't.. SD cards limit me sometimes, but I do find that SD Mobi Pro's are great for my real estate/ interior design shoots. I'd love Cfast/CF, but I have no control over that, so I won't worry about it.

Canon Cinema EOS C700 Coming in 2016 [CR3]

Re: Canon Cinema EOS C700 Coming in 2016 [CR2]

HarryFilm said:
THIS is the camera I want --- just make it 8k and we'll be REALLY HAPPY CAMPERS!

It does have equivalent resolution. Since it has 4K@14-bit (both RAW and compressed) it has 1/4 of the pixel resolution of 8K 10-bit cLog, but having 16 times more luminance resolution and 16 times the color/chroma "resolution" (precision).

If you would be downscaling for BluRay / HDTV you would have a master with x4 (pixel) x64 (14-bit) = 256 times more luminance data and 256 x 4 (x4 is the difference against the 4:2:0 subsampling) = 1024 times the color information of BluRay. That is if we presume the same framerate.

If it is true that Arri Alexa exceeds the IQ of super-35mm-film than C700 would have x100 the precision of film stock.

If that does not fulfill your needs wait for 8K - 16bit - 4:4:4

Shortage of 1DX typical or not?

Mt Spokane Photography said:
After 6 months or maybe 8 months, they will be discounted as the supply is saturated.

I generally agree with your assessment, with a small quibble. I'm not sure the statement above is true of 1 series cameras. The 5D, 6D, 7D, XXD etc., yes. But, looking at Canon Price Watch price graph, it looks like the 1DX held pretty even until last November when Canon instituted a rebate. I also went back through the CPW blog and could not find any discounts from authorized dealers. Even now the "street price" for the 1DX from CPW is still over $4,150.

Venus Optics Laowa STF 105mm f/2 (T3.2) Reportage

Hi, everyone, Venus Optics approached me about reviewing their new Laowa Smooth Trans Focus 105mm f/2 (T3.2). I agreed, and I've had a copy in hand since last week. It is definitely a unique lens that can produce beautiful results, but it is also a somewhat challenging lens to use and one I would say is best suited for those already confident in using manual focus lenses...or for videographers.

I've got an image gallery going here if you want to take a look: http://bit.ly/1XYKumd

Here's a shot from it of the Zeiss Milvus 1.4/50mm that I'm about to release my review of.
