DPR's review of D5

ritholtz said:
Not sure how Canon does in 3d focus compared with D5. We have to wait for idx2 full review. I think, it is very easy to predict outcome of this test. They are going to drum up superior 3d Nikon focus even though it is limited in use (check d500 review where they can not use 3d focus in their bicycle test where biker is little far from camera). We have seen this for some time. Can someone explain me what are the situations one can use 3D focusing. Based on DPR and Tony tests, looks like it is only useful for close ups. Is it true? Is it possible to track soccer ball or basketball using 3D focusing.

So, DPR failed to mention the usefulness/limitations of Nikons 3D tracking. What a surprise... Just keep in mind that it's really good. It's the best there is. It's Trump good...

New Lens or new body

gregorywood said:
I have days where I think I could sell it all off and just get the latest rebel and a couple of zoom lenses, plus a prime or two and I'd probably take mostly decent photos. I'd save a hell of a lot of money, that's for sure.

The gap in price between FF and Rebels is getting pretty small. I've seen 6D's for close to $1000. A FF will produce a better image from a given lens, you can easily use low cost used EF lenses and do better than a crop with similar lenses.

I'd certainly look at a used FF or even Pro APS-H body before a Rebel. 1D MK IV's are getting very cheap.

Accidental Lens Release

It has been a recurring issue on my 70D. Most times, I've caught on before anything happened. Clues might be the aperture displaying F0 or lens would suddenly stop AF. A few weeks ago I dropped my 24-105 because of this. I also suspect it has something to do with the combination of zoom ring position on the 24-105 and release button tension/position.

I've found that the most likely hand position to trigger an accidental release is when holding the camera vertically pointing downwards, say when taking an overhead shot. Depending on how one holds the lens barrel, one may be inadvertently supporting the weight of the rig by touching the release button. Twisting the zoom ring in this position is what potentially could cause an accidental lens release.

Canon EF 85mm f1.2 vs Zeiss 85mm f1.4 Milvus (having the Sigma 85mm f1.4)

Meanwhile I bought the Milvus 85mm f1.4. The Canon cashback for the 85mm f1.2 expired 2 days before I had the budget to buy the lens.

The Milvus is great. Manual focusing needs a bit of training but it works.

Who ever is interested in the photographic outcome? I compared it with my Sigma:

Tony Northrup invades the Rumorsphere

See! Just how could a $600 phone screen beat a $6000 camera's screen? Ridiculous. I trust Tony. He tells it like it is. How could Nikon and Canon let this happen?

Tony FTW!

I'm not sure if the S7 has a better screen than the S6, or the 1DXii has a worse screen than the 1DX, but my 1DX screen is much easier to view in direct sunlight than my S6.

huBcba0l.jpg

Bullocks. You purposely took that photo with bad lighting on the phone compared to the camera's screen. Tony is right -- these cameras at these price points should have at least 5 inch displays with full touch functionality. Why would users want anything buy a large display these days on pro bodies?

Also, did you see in the review how both the Canon 1DX2 and Nikon D5 memory card doors are spring loaded?! Pfft. Again, lack of innovation and these giant companies are just copying off each other.

80d vs. 7D MKII

In reply to ajfotofilmagem's remark : nor AlanF nor I said otherwise.

But since you bring up the subject of noise: the better the DR of a camera, the less noise there is in the final image after post-processing.

For instance when pushing the shades in a photo of an airplane in bright sunlight, when the underside of the wings and fuselage are underexposed (in bright sunlight that usually is a fair amount of underexposure). This is the situation where everything about the 7D Mark II excels .... except for the DR of its sensor.

First off: GOSLINGS! Like that Ryan character but slightly smaller and perhaps a little fluffier... In the English language the word is 'Gosling' :)

and B) Some great photographs here, thanks for sharing! I don't understand Flickr anymore though, you reckon we're meant to be able to find EXIF info on there like we used to? I'm not finding anything, anywhere but I've become totally de-familiarised with it all since they went and turned it into an iCameraPhone mess of a site... really though, I've tried; it's there, somewhere?
Yeah, I don't see any EXIFs in Flickr either, but I did find them on 500pix for at least one shot, its probably there for the others too.

As I see nothing unexpected in the EXIF, would you mind telling me how you sharpen Dominic?

Thanks.

Cheers Brian

Hi Brian,

Hm I'm not sure why it's not showing the EXIFs for you guys :(

Here you go with the photo titles :)

Chaaaaaarge!
Canon EOS 7D Mark II
EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM
ƒ/5.6 400.0 mm 1/1000 400 Flash (off, did not fire)

First Steps
Canon EOS 7D Mark II
EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM
ƒ/6.3 400.0 mm 1/640 3200 Flash (off, did not fire)

A brand new world
Canon EOS 7D Mark II
EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM
ƒ/6.3 400.0 mm 1/1000 1000 Flash (off, did not fire)

For sharpening, I either apply a general 25 sharpening first (or none at all) then I use the (cant remember the name now) selective airbursh thing in Lightroom to apply localized sharpening on my subject (as well as any other modifications applied only to the subject).

Sometimes I will also do some high pass sharpening in photoshop, depending.

Hope that helps :)
Hi Dominic,
thats very kind of you, thanks very much. Up till now I never used the sharpening in LR due to artefacts that appear if I use the masking function. When I do sharpen then in PS with selective sharpening on the luminanz channel in Lab mode. I'm not sure if that is really up to date any more.

Cheers Brian

Sigma lenses incompatible with 1DX II

As much as I dislike Sony's continually obsoleting their products and dropping support, this is a area where you can purchase a third party lens and expect it to work, because Sony gives free licenses for their lens operating system. They did it to quickly build lens support for their cameras. You can use a Sigma, Tamron, Zeiss, and soon, a Rokinon that have the proper firmware to work with a Sony camera.

Olympus OMD-E-M1 was mentioned earlier in the thread. What could make sense for Canon would be to mimic some of the software features that Olympus has added to both OMD and their high end P&S "Tough" series cameras. Olympus provides ability to select focus stacking in camera. Not as flexible as 3rd party stackers or as good as computer controlled rail moving the body, but very handy in a lot of situations. Select near and far focus points and specify how fine the increment (# in stack), camera does the rest. Seems to be a great way to get people interested and produces much better results than just stopping down way too far. E-M1 actually creates the resulting stacked image in camera as a jpg (limited stack size) or you can output the collection of images in the stack to process outside the camera.

Automated focus stacking is very handy - I've used the HeliconRemote software - but alas it only works with lenses that AF. The crowning jewel of Canon's macro hardware is the MP-E, which is MF only, so in-camera automated focus stacking would not be possible. You'd need a (motorised) focus rail for that.

Alternative for MF lenses is to move the sensor back and forth. That was done back in film days by the Contax AX body. The "AF" was very slow, but it added limited AF to Zeiss lenses. However, it also made the body very thick. It also acted as a built-in extension tube, which was cool. I very much doubt that this will come back, though.

I thought about that, but they couldn't move the sensor enough, surely? Not without changing the camera body design too much, and even then... Impractical to say the least!

Tamron 15-30 - not working in live view/video with 1dx2

got 15-30 lens back..
all functions with 5d3 and 1dx2 (just..live view issue on 1dx2) work fine now..
I had a few clicks in microadjust.. but it seems zeroed out.. maybe part of a new set of codes...
doesnt seem to need adjustment... but I will obsess further....

also maybe they adjusted the lens slightly ...i.e. checked the far/near focus tracking..

anyway..
it is wonderful...
very sharp lens.. very useful.. a slight annoyance for the reverse engineering world it lives in...
but a very good value.. for a unique product...
AND
the tamron folks were very nice..
then they shipped fedEx overnight BACK to me...

no BS or handwaving from the repair station..
they just needed the codes from japan.. everyone being careful with their customer...
......at least that's what I felt...

I will keep this lens....
makes me curious about the 85 1.8 stabilized lens....
some say it is fantastic....

we are lucky to have such fun toys ...for work and play..

just a last report on what transpired..
thanks for input...all...

Gear for London...

- umbrella
- boots
- water proof jacket
- water proof pants
- water proof enclosure for the camera (if you are photographing outside)

Oh, make sure your girlfriend has a big enough umbrella that you can stand under hers whilst you do your thing with the camera.

If you want to look a total dork...

Depends if you want to stay dry or not ... afterall, this is London that is being discussed, not Las Vegas.

You obviously have not read the comments about rainfall further up this thread! The numbers of days I actually need an umbrella in London is very few...

What I found with the 1DXii bottom right hand corner problem is that when I viewed the raw files with Windows 7, FastStone Image Viewer there was no problem in the bottom right hand corner. When viewed/edit with Adobe Camera Raw 9.5.1 the problem is there. The problem is there with Lightroom Cc 2015.5.1 64 bit version. When you view the file with Canon DPP ver 4 the problems NOT there. When you edit with Canon DDP ver 4 the problem IS there.

You are likely viewing the embedded jpg within the raw file. I ran into that studying another issue.
Thanks, learnt something new today. That makes sense on what I'm seeing. Always thought that Lightroom made the JPegs when importing into library. This information, you brought to light, ties into why other raw viewering software works.

By the time my kids get married, Nikon and Canon will have long gone bankrupt ...

unless they have moved to making hi-rez hi-ISO surveillance cameras which will be so ubiquitous, that you don't need to hire any image makers any longer to get a wedding fully covered on stills and moving images from every possible angle. :o ;D

Might be true now, only us civilians can't access the footage. :o :P

Sure we can, just gotta sneak a USB stick into the Secretary of State's house.
