Looks like Canon's boat is sinking in Thailand

Aglet said:

Frankly you deserve a medal if you managed to read that whole interview. Why does he not use a video camera, or at the very least a voice recorder, when doing such in-depth interviews? I know it is only personal opinion, but I hate reading long interviews when they are just written out in Q&A form like that.

As I am not going to read the whole thing, I will just repeat that what was said about Thais:

TI: About $550 as a price range, but bear in mind that was the price for Thailand. It's probably worth three months' salary or so [for customers in that market].

DE: Wow. And they're still buying them in huge quantities.
[Ed. Note: This is really incredible, that mass-market consumers are buying cameras that cost three months' salary!]

is totally erroneous and completely inaccurate as well as misleading.

As Tyroop said, and I concur, most Thais use their smartphones to take pictures, many even have two! And many do spend much more than they should on their phones when you consider what some of them are earning. But the average middle class Thai earns a lot more than that ridiculous figure quoted above.

Ask most middle class Thais what they think of Fuji and they will most likely say they like the food, but that the restaurants can be really busy at certain times making it difficult to get a table! ;) Yes, it is a popular and reasonably priced Japanese restaurant chain in Thailand!

70D triggering flash too early on second curtain sync

OK, I did some more testing. Up until 1/25s it stays at roughly 10ms before the second curtain (then at about 75% of track length).
For 1/30s shutter speed and faster, setting second curtain sync does nothing but the normal first curtain sync is used. The change at 1/30s is documented in the manual of the 70D (it is also in the manual of the 5D3).
If they implemented this limitation, the 10ms I'm seeing might be normal, but should in any case be documented, as this drastically reduces the usefulness of the second curtain sync for any shutter speeds faster than about 1s.

First curtain sync flash seems to happen about 2ms after the curtain opens at the bottom of the frame (nearly at the middle of the 4ms track) and nearly at the start of the exposure at the top of the frame. This means that the shutter takes about 2ms to fully open (starting at the bottom of the frame) and afterwards the flash has about 2ms to fire until the shutter closes again (starting at the bottom of the frame).

Nikon D5: DR vs. ISO plots posted

Quote from one of them:

"It's going to be very interesting for next few months here in DPR. Looks like to achieve anything at high end we had to sacrifice lower end DR. Canon have improved the DR for their new cameras and Nikon reduced it. Most probably 1DX II will have more DR than D5. I can see there will be lots of arguments here about this."

100mm f2.8 IS macro - due for replacement?

The MP-E 65, I doubt if that will ever get upgraded, it has no real competition so why bother? It won the competition in the field of one!

Hmm, m4/3 isn't quite the same as FF though is it? At just 1/4 the sensor area they aren't really the same thing.

1DX II Noise test form Raymond Phang

Thanks for sharing.

It will be interesting to see how DXO reacts if the 1dX II has some sort of industry leading low ISO DR, or Nikon/Sony forums getting trolled about their ancient sensor tech. ;)
It depends if in this particular model's CMOS there are signal amps on chip already.

You know: DxO test the sensor only ignoring half of the Canon's logic before the end RAW image output. Ergo the evaluation is injustice for Canon up to now. We';ll see. The Canon's CEO said that they will change that.

ac power/battery adapter - for 1 series cameras

It is a big problem for me. I currently use my power adaptor quite often on my 1DX. I use it for indoor sports where I am in a static environment, as well as in the studio. I also use it if I am using the camera as a B camera for video.

But the reduced frame rate for sports is a big disappointment for me considering the CN$850 price for an AC adaptor.

Godox Witstro 360 flash with HHS

Hi,
I have just bought a Godox AD 360 and started to use it with my YN-622C TX and YN-622C units.

As I read it in the forum it works well with PC Sync to PC Sync connection when I want to use it on high shutter speed. I only noticed that when I for example change the shutter speed from /2000 to /4000 it makes an effect on the flash exposure too. I made the test in a dark room so there was no ambient light. Is it normal?

I tried to make the SuperSync with my YN-622C TX on my 6D and the AD360 on the hot shoe of YN-622C but there was banding.
Can you give me tip how should I setup the timing of the YN-622C TX?

Thanks in advance!

Walk in Toronto

Hi LoneRider, I like the pictures since they show a picture of cities with a certain intention of your subjective style. I am just wondering why the ones taken from above have such a shroud? With which camera/objective did you take these?

If you are talking about the 3 looking down from the CN tower, those were taken using a 7D, with fairly long exposures. There was also some fog and mist, and it was a bit after sunset. Frankly I am amazed at how well they turned out.

I was visiting a cousin who worked at the CN tower at the time. She was kind enough to bring her tripod for me to use. I am sure I was amusing people as I was using my jacket and some creative positions to block the glare on the windows.

I will admit, it always amuses me how much of a different eye and taste people have. And thanks for the complement.

Fuji thoughts

Decided not to go the Fuji route and stick with Canon instead for my mirrorless needs. Got myself a 'like new' but used EOS M2 from Amazon.jp this week for a piddly amount compared to those Fujis. Going to test it out properly tomorrow at an event with lots of people moving around at a parade. Initial tests at home were positive; focuses significantly faster than the M1 especially with my 11-22 lens. The 22/2 is still slow, my conclusion there is that it's the lens and not the camera. Going to try some adapted lens tests too.

How does the M2 with the 22mm compare to the original M? No improvement at all or not as big as the 11-22?

Anybody else noticed the M10 with the 15-45 dropping to 320€? Thats a very good price ...

Not sure I understand the question. The M2 with the 22mm is overall slightly smaller. AF is a tad faster too. The 11-22 though focuses a lot faster, it always did.

That 15-45 is dropping a fair bit on Amazon.jp already which is surprise. In comparison the 11-22 is the same price at what I bought it at. That was a while ago. It's held it's value well and I can see why - it's a quality lens!

M10 was gonna drop no matter. All of the Ms did.

EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II vs EF 70-200mm f/2.8L + 2X III

So which is it? F/4L or F/2.8 MK II. Your title and the photo title does not match.

We all know that the f/2.8L MK II with a TC is very good. The f/4L NON IS with TC's suffers at the long end considerably.

Oops, it should have been f2.8 in the title not f4. Thanks, corrected it. Mine is the mk I.

My very BAD Experience with CPS - Final Chapter

Two things:

1. Is everything ok with your gear now?

2. CPS is not supposed to be an endless supply of repairs. A repair of an out of warranty item does not magically give it a new warranty. I would like to hear about instances in your personal dealings where this was the case. Automobile work comes to mind.

Is it not feasible they found an actual problem that had yet to manifest itself and since you are not a certified lens technician, you thought nothing was wrong?

I think you should be happy. Sometimes the road is rough but the destination is beautiful.

Interesting video! How long did it take to shoot & process?
Hello. Thank. Happy you enjoyed my random work. Like I said, I started to shoot driving time-lapse back in 2014. It was very time consuming. After each trip I had around ~1000 photos or more to proceed in post and export like time-lapse.

Canon 600mm f/4.0 DO BR rumors?

Personally I'd rather see an excellent and affordable 4/300 DO that competes with the Nikon 4/300PF.

600 DO seems too obvious but also more expensive than the 600f4ii? A 300/4 DO, now that would be an interesting lens. My biggest concern is that the DO design doesn't take TCs as well which is a real benefit to the current 300f4. A lot of people seem to want the 400f5.6 refreshed and include IS, this seems pointless with the 100-400ii as good as it is. Id rather see a 300f4 with an across the board improvement. Updated IS, AF and sharper at f4.
Yes, 4/600 DO will probably be similar or even higher price than 4/600 II; there's also the rumored 5.6/600 DO but even that will cost about the same as a small car probably ;-)

Just looking at the 4/400 DO or the Nikon 4/300PF, TC's are not a problem for recent DO lenses except if you are extremely critical. Both do very well with a 1.4x TC, with 2.0x in addition to some optical quality loss the AF becomes a problem for moving subjects and in that case you should probably start with a brighter lens like the 2.8/300 II.

A much improved 4/300 DO could be my dream lens :-) I'm currently using the 4/300IS but consider switching to 100-400II instead despite the much higher weight, because of the better AF, IS, better reach and better closeup capability. Agree that the 100-400 doesn't leave any room for a 5.6/400 IS (except maybe lower weight, but I think the market would be too small also given the significant used market for the 5.6/400).

New Firmware for Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM Sports & Contemporary Lenses Available

Been awaiting this update ever since it was announced earlier this year and installed it to my 150-600 C as soon as it came out. I've not had the chance to try it out extensively, but from my limited, very non-scientific testing so far, AF in normal mode does seem snappier (or it could just be psychological). More importantly, I have not noticed any discernible impact on accuracy or any adverse impact of the new firmware on the lens.

Going to be using it more now that the weather is hopefully getting better in the Pacific Northwest and will report back if there's any noteworthy changes.

Canon Cinema EOS C500 Price Drop to $9999 Coming

Things I would like to see in the C500 Mark II

Everything that the C300 Mark II has except the following changes/additions:

When I say 4:4:4, I mean 4:4:4 in addition to the existing XF AVC codecs that are 10 bit 4:2:2

DCI 4K at 10 bit 4:4:4 Internal
UHD 4K at 10 bit 4:4:4 Internal
2K at 12 bit 4:4:4 Internal
Full HD at 12 bit 4:4:4 Internal

DCI 4K up to 60 FPS
UHD 4K up to 60 FPS
2K up to 60 FPS
Full HD up to 240 FPS without line binning or line skipping (This is not too much to ask for, if the camera is going to retail at around $20,000 it should at least have this feature or they're ripping customers off)

A new Canon C-LOG profile that will enable the advertised levels of latitude, i.e 15 stops of dynamic range, instead of only churning out around 12-13. I'm not an engineer so I don't know how this works specifically, whether it's a sensor thing or a gamma curve thing, but fix it.

Interchangeable lens mount from EF to PL without having to send the camera back.

Possibly upgrades to the AF module that's already in the C300 Mark II but I doubt that's going to happen. It's already fairly capable to be honest but a little upgrade will always be welcomed.

The C300 Mark II is a fine camera. Barring the fact that the slow motion on the camera is just a nightmare to integrate into my workflow, it seems very much like a polished B or even A camera depending on your budget or whether you're just an enthusiast filming your kids and family events. Also the C500 had a loud fan noise when it's being worked hard, probably that could be improved.

Sigma 50mm 1.4 for Canon

Refurb7 said:
I'm quite impressed with the Sigma 50mm Art. I haven't done a side by side comparison with other 50mm lenses, but the photos I've made with the Art have been quite good.

Check out this review of the 50 Art by Will Chao: http://willchaophotography.com/sigma-50mm-f1-4-art-review/

I couldn't believe The Angry Photographer's video on YouTube in which he blasts the 50 Art for all sorts of reasons, including the "Art" name. I doubt he has actually used it!

Thanks for the helpful responses so far, I was just wondering since you (@Refurb7) mentioned the photos you have made with the 50 Art, if you could show some here? (Or as a message to me) I would be very thankful. :)

Sony announces new radio wireless lighting control system

AvTvM said:
https://alphauniverse.com/stories/sony-announces-new-wireless-lighting-control-system/

ooops, another Canon unique sales advantage out the window.

Canon squandered a good part of that advantage anyways due to their decision to only sell [big, expensive] 600EX-RTs + [expensive, no AF-assist light] ST-E3 RTs ... instead of bringing on [smaller, less expensive] 430EX III RT early on and a [small, inexpensive] speedlite receiver so customers could have integrated their existing 580EX II and 430EX II into an RT speedlite setup.

Ummmm What is your point?

So lets see... Many many MANY months ago, Canon introduces their new system, which includes RT. True. You have your big new Flashes, but eliminate the need for triggers. So instead of carrying around triggers and flashes, you just carry around flashes.

As for Canon's new Cannons, not exactly overly expensive either. I have been able to pick up Refurbished units on sale (like yesterday for $370 or so) which, ironically was around what I had been paying 2 or 3 years ago for my 580EX II. So price wise, I have a contained unit, a solid unit, and have to carry around less pieces of gear and less points of failure.

The only downside, is integrating in some of my studio... So I still have my PocketWizard Plus IIs and FlexTT5, which may seem like overkill, but the Flex5 are awesome for HSS (I like being able to shoot 1/2000 at F/16) AND firing a SECOND BODY in sync with the flash. I am even looking for a couple MultiMax for some of the unique sequential firing things they do.

Would not be surprised to see Canon releasing receivers in the future, but at the same time, I think their focusing on a complete integrated 600EX-RT system is a lot more solid instead of trying to handle every variation.

I think my upgrade path from 3 580EX-II to now 3 600EX-RT was around $225 - $250, given what I sold my 580s off for and what I have pair cherry picking sales, and for me, given some of the issues the 580s had with the Flex, not a bad trade off indeed.

I still love my PocketWizards. My old Photogenic heads had built in triggers (a couple did at least) and most of my current Dynalite Studio packs have the built in as does my Sekonic meter. I am still finding buried or little used featured and taking control of what I can do with light.

I have no problem with Canon's release. Some other triggers and the like might have been nice, but I could also see a pile of quips about the mixed system having issues or that the 580EX-II and the 600s don't play well. I actually would not be surprised if Canon did not start down that path, but found tiny issues with firing different flashes off of triggers in sync with the 600s, and while extremely minute, found this reason to hold off for a bit.

On the other hand, the 600EX-RTs were an absolute GIFT to a lot of late-adopters. All of the sudden the 580EX-IIs can be had for cheap. Sucks a bit if you were paying $450+ and now they are $250, but if you love the 580EX-IIs and have a solid system down, you now can backfill with branded gear at just above Yongnuo prices. From what I see and hear, a lot of photographers don't need the new RT and love getting better prices.
