Elinchrom rx-one life expectancy

Your RX-1 should have lasted longer than that. PCB Einsteins are a cheap option with a handy built in feature that tells you how many pops the flash has done. I have six Einsteins and their mileage ranges from 45,000 to 80,000 with no problems at all.

FWIW I used to have Elincrom and Profoto and the cost of ownership was high, too many and too frequent trips to the repair shop. Einsteins have been rock solid.

Panasonic GH5 6k?

As a very happy GH4 shooter (for video projects) I would be too swayed by any GH5 speculation at this early stage. It's unlikely we'll see the GH5 in 2016.

I use and value 4k entirely for flexibility in post (then output in 1080p) Though technically incorrect, it's a little like shooting RAW. What I'd ask for in a GH5 would be a decent iso bump and significant AF improvements. I'd never use AF for video on the GH4, but AF is fine for stills. Even at the expense of a size and weight boost, I'd really like to see the current and frankly ridiculous micro HDMI upgraded to an far more robust, bigger, locked connection.

Panasonic are almost sure to ship a GH5 with some very cool surprises. But 6k? Meh...Can you turn it up to 11? ???

A 1DX II deal that is too good to pass up?

Get the 1DX II, you can always sell it within the first year and the price will not be much lower (depending on the deal you have you may even be on profit) and buy back a 5D III (its price will only go lower so you might get an even bigger profit), or a new 5D IV

I am not sure that is a realistic option. I think for most, once you use a 1 series camera such as the 1DX Mark I or 1DX Mark II on a regular basis it would be very, very difficult to go back to the 5 series. The 1 series cameras really are that good.

I agree. However, I went back to the 5 series because I had carpal tunnel and my wrists would not handle the extra weight. The 5 series is too heavy too, but I'm managing.

Firmware Updates: What's possible and what's probable

@RGF

Panasonic offered a paid for firmware update for the GH4, I believe it may be exclusive for European owners, that lifted the 30 minute cap on 4K video to make it unlimited, IE until you run out of battery or card space.

If it was for Europe only, it sounds like that the payment for the EU tax on a "video camera, capable of taking 30m videos".

Yes, we have stupid taxes (and laws) like that.

so nothing really for photographers. No new features, ...

50mm f1.0L - At what price would you buy?

iaind said:
Price is dependant on intended use. Are you going to use it daily and shoot multiple images or is it going to lie at the bottom of your bag. The fact that it is now non-repairable should also affect its price. How much is a good paperweight.
As a 1.0 owner I can safely say that this lens is by far the cheapest lens I own if you consider the average price per image taken, even more so if you only count the 'amazing' images.

That being said, I also own a f/1.2 just because I don't want to bring my 1.0 with me to the beach or on vacation since it's not sealed and cannot be repaired. The 1.2 however misses the magic of the 1.0 that's almost glued to my Canon 5D mk III even though I have enough other lenses to choose from.

Interesting old 80D rumor in light of the actual published features

crashpc said:
Don't panic so fast. We know it is more than that.
No panic here, I think such 21% gain in stops for low ISO DR is perfectly possible looking at e.g. DXO ratings for 70D and Nikon D7200. I just don't know if Canon will deliver but we should know within a month or so. Otherwise Nikon has a tasty alternative just around the corner (tired of waiting for Canon to catch up in DR).

Canon Canada Price Increases Confirmed

So, when the exchange rate becomes more favorable again, will we see price reductions?

Don't hold your breath.

When the exchange rate was at parity they did not feel the need to reduce prices in Canada.

obviously they did, otherwise they wouldn't be doing this now would they?

When the exchange rate was at parity it was cheaper to buy from US.

depends, henrys was always expensive and no where near MAP .. once the smaller camera shops closed down and it was basically vistek and henrys prices went up.

looking back to around May 2013 though, a 70-200L 2.8 II IS was around 2349 CAD and 2199 USD.

the exchange was 1.05 at the time.

the difference between exchange and actual was around 30 bucks.

No. It is simply an implication of the fact, that neither Canon nor Nikon are offering competitive MILCs. And that 3:1 ratio is changing ... MILCs are gaining ground.

Thanks for confirming my point very effectively!

translate this page and find that there may be one area where MILC is outselling Canon at the moment

http://www.dslrmagazine.com/digital/tecnicas-de-fotografia-digital/encuentros-cp-2016-fujifilm-y-el-futuro-de-la-serie-x.html

excerpt, my emphasis:

Fujifilm - For now, complete the X series; there is a little known fact: in Thailand, for example, XA series, with conventional sensor, no X-Trans- outsells Canon! And that even taking into account that in that country the price of the camera represents twice the average monthly salary. Furthermore, in regard to the resolution of the sensors we believe to be more than successful with 24 Megapixel. the new sensor X-Pro2. As you know, the technology of CMOS X-Trans III is new, with "wiring" of copper, higher conductivity.

... would be interesting to see all the sales stat's there.

Dark frame collection without shutter opening?

Long Exposure Noise Reduction causes a dark exposure with the shutter closed under some circumstances. The resulting dark frame is substracted from the photo. At high ISO, a larger number of averaged darkframes (master frame) substracted from a photo gives better results than a single dark frame.

1) The thermal noise is dependent on shutter speed, ISO and sensor temperature. Three variables make up a lot of combinations and a series of 50 to 100 dark frames for each combo make a lot of dark frames ;D
How temperature / shutter speed sensitive are the dark frames? Would it be noticable if the substracted dark frame temperature would be 2 - 4 degrees Celcius off from the actual photo temperature? What about the shutter speed?

2) with LENR = ON, the camera takes a dark frame with the shutter closed. It would be quite convenient if you can do this manually and write the resulting CR2 to the SD card. It also saves on shutter actuations. Is there a way (e.g. hack) to do this? Maybe via usb and some remote control or a special piece of firmware that can be installed?

Samyang/Rokinon 21mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/1.2 Reviews on EOS M3

Two great and wide ranging reviews Dustin.
I was wondering about manual focussing.
Are you using an electronic viewfinder?
Just using the screen and manually focussing seems a bit awkward and potentially error prone.
I have to hand it Samyang, I've only had good experience and their lens seem well made

I did use the DC-1 EV-F quite a bit during the review. It is one of the better tools for MF.

5D3 replacement: With or without AA filter?

tron said:
How about a week AA filter? So as to try to combine the best (or worst?) of both worlds!

I believe that they do try to balance the various factors. An AA filter does not stand alone, you must balance various different factors to get the best result.

Using the 1DX Mark II with only CF Cards

pwp said:
If you're just testing it's scarcely an issue. Just accept the obvious that CFast will be much quicker and deeper. Card performance during a 1DX test will be almost the least interesting aspect of evaluating the camera. Interesting maybe, but hardly worth worrying about. It'll be FAst ;D

Enjoy the test drive.

-pw

I will be testing it on the job - and in many different scenarios, so it is important I get the most out of it, although as you quite rightly say the card performance will be the least interesting aspect of the few days.

The buffer on RAW images is not in any way important to me as my bursts are normally only for 3 or 4 shots max. I do occasionally go nuts and hold it down for a little longer, but that only tends to happen when I am tired and fed up!

But I am very interested to also test the 4K capabilities and to do that properly I will need at least a 128GB or greater CF card.

I may take Bennymiata's above advice and see if they can give me a CFast card too, though as pbd said I do not need a reader.

Sigma Announces 50-100mm f/1.8 DC Art for APS-C

PhotographyFirst said:
So I assume those MTF charts show the 50-100 actually better than the 18-35? That would be pretty incredible since the 18-35 is one of the sharpest APS-C zooms ever made.

Seem to be pretty similar in the long end. However, the wide end of the 50-100 appears to be a bit softer than the 18-35 (which is remarkably consistent in its sharpness).

Canon EOS 5D X Chatter Continues [CR0]

LetTheRightLensIn said:
kevl said:
They know that while there is a segment of their customers who need to have video for some work that DSLRs are just no longer the right tool for the job. Mirrorless is a superior tool for a lot of reasons that just putting an amazing sensor in a DSLR could never trump. So why should Canon chase customers who aren't going to buy their products anyway?

Why is mirrorless superior for that other than the mirrorless makers have bothered to deliver more? What is a DLSR in video mode/live view mode but mirrorless? At that point there is no mirror.

Pretty sure I noted about flying the camera in rigs in that comment. If I didn't I meant to.

A smaller lighter package is what mirrorless offers which DSLR simply cannot touch. If you have the budget to fly heavier hardware then the DSLR doesn't make sense either. There are much better larger options.

DSLR had a moment in the video creation segment, but that moment is largely over. It's good to have video in a DSLR but it doesn't make sense to base your video business on DSLR hardware.

You can put large enough engines in a F4 Phantom to make it fly, but it is still just a flying brick. Yes you can do video with DSLR, but it will be more expensive, more difficult, and the end result will not be as good as if you do it with mirrorless or with pro-video equipment. It just isn't the right tool any more because better tools have come on the scene.

Hense... Canon aggressively chasing that segment of the market just doesn't make sense for them as a company. Their products need video, but they don't need to be the video solution.

Anything regarding Profoto B1/B2

Hi guys!

Just today tried my B1 with ND filter instead of HSS, as I wanted more power. But, with a ND8 at syncspeed, I hit full power in the sun anyway. I haven't tested the output with stopping down(or ND) vs hss, but to me it seems to be little to no difference. And that's quite the opposite of what I suspected and what I have read about it and hss in general..

Anyone else have experiences regarding this?

One from todays outing, iso 50, f1.4+ND8, 1/250s. Shot in TTL as a first shot, but ended up being the one I liked, so didn't notice power.
