Any suggestions for getting pure linear data from an A7? The current raw format use non-linear encoding.
Lightroom, dxo, Silkypix, Aperture, RawTherapee, dcraw, etc.
Yes sony ARW2 format uses non-linear encoding but pretty much everyone who cares knows the encoding being used and how to convert data back to linear.

Steadicam Merlin / Solo

Does anybody have an idea if the steadicam merlin is compatible with the steadicam solo arm and vest? I have a merlin, but no arm and vest and I would love to get one, but the stores have started selling the solo instead of the merlin. I can't find any statment if they are compatible, even though the vests look similar. Does anybody have experience with the solo vest?

Leica SL Coming in October?

It looks like a new Leica system is going to be coming for PhotoPlus next month, and it’ll be called the Leica SL. The new camera system is likely going to replace the T and X lines down the road.

About the Leica SL:

Full Frame

Interchangeable AF lenses

Not an M replacement

Bulkier than the Q & M cameras

EVF

Lighter weight than the M

Bundled with Summicron 50 f/2

In-body stabilization

Do we all See Color the Same?

Mt Spokane Photography said:
I am home, with my 2nd eye still closed but ready to remove the tape. I expect to have much brighter and clearer vision, and no longer see thru the Tobacco Stain colored lens.
Best wishes and a good recovery.

I definitely will be seeing different colors, but have yet to feel that I'd need to re-edit any of my photos to correct the color.
As you surely know from your first surgery it'll take some time 'till you've adapted the changes again.
And what's difficult is the point that I normally try to edit my pics that it comes close to what I've seen during the shot (except for some artsy things). And that's really difficult now for you having different pre and post surgery visions then.

Lots of fun re-discovering your pictures ;)

Rokinon Announces 21mm f/1.4 & 50mm f/1.2 for EOS M

This 50mm is SO cool for an M camera. I've always lusted for the Canon 50mm 1.2L aesthetic (DOF) and now I can get this instead, with a small eos m.

I wish Canon wouldn't force us to get expensive FF glass for out APS-C/S35 cameras, and offer affordable 50mm ef-s 1.2 and such.

BTW the focus ring on these lenses are heaven, it's very easy for me to focus the samyang 85mm wide open on the m3 screen, but you can take it further with giving a visual peaking aid.

An m3 + this 50mm 1.2 + LCDEVF loup seems like such a cool small video kit, especially with the improved and very good 1080p on the new sensor in the m3, Only lacking optical stabilization (although the digital one on the m3 is great, but I just don't like the idea of potentially losing resolution with digital stabilization, just gives me a bad feel so I don't use it)

I hope for an m4 with even better video quality (perfect 1080p, like 5ds (yes I said s, the video quality on it is the best of any canon DSLR, strangely! or a7s, xc10, gh4, just full resolution, sharp, non aliased 1080P with canon colours and the high-end 90mbps ALL-I Codec), a great clear EVF, clean HDMI out like the 7DII, + please, please, I beg you for some new glass, fast er-m/ef-s primes with IS from 35mm to 85mm, pleaaase!

5D Mark III Dual Memory Card

pwp said:
A few years ago I got an EyeFi SD card hoping for useable performance and stability for the same reasons you've detailed.

WiFi in an electromagnetically "busy" environment may be tricky. For maximum reliability, you should find a channel with little interference, especially if using a device not designed to be an access point like an iPad. Some WiFi diagnostic apps may help to check how many devices are transmitting, and on what channels. Remember that 802.11b/g/n 2.4GHz channel overlaps, you may need to leave 3-4 channels "clear" to avoid interferences, say channel 11 is in use, you should not select 10 or 9, even if free, better to use 7 or 6 (if free, and not overlapping with other channels). Other many factors may of course be implied.
Setting up a true access point - it needs to be just an access point to create a wifi network, it doesn't need to be a router/switch/ap device - usually yields far better results than an ad-hoc connection, because of better antennas, transmission power, and dedicated hardware.

Also, be aware some hotels and congress centers have been found guilty (i.e. https://www.fcc.gov/document/marriott-pay-600k-resolve-wifi-blocking-investigation) of using techniques to force devices to drop the connection to any non-company WiFi, to make people to use the local, usually expensive wifi network.

Patent - Canon Tilt-Shift Adapter for EF Lenses

Re: Sensor movement

keithcooper said:
Good luck with any user interface on that one :-)
Never underestimate the ineptitude and lack of understanding of your audience when designing 'easy' interfaces for complex kit.
Well there is already interface called A-DEP. I don't see why it can't be automatic in green modes.
keithcooper said:
Light field and computational imaging will eventually be far more flexible for any 'Auto' modes, and not need the complexities (and limitations) of moving tilting elements.
Yes. Someday. Now there's very heavy pixel tradeoff (if you need 4x depth you need 16x number of pixels) and exit pupil of the lens has to be coupled with the sensor which makes it er... limited to fixed lens cameras.
Sensor tilting isn't more complex than double reflex mirror.
keithcooper said:
Even then I suspect I'll still be enjoying my "fully manual heavy expensive kludges"
Why not. Some people still enjoy shooting film and manual lenses when there's digital and AF.

Idea--Looking at autofocus from a new perspective

helpful said:
Choosing the center point only versus a group of autofocus points is not the issue at hand. If you choose the center point only, does your camera then provide the option to prioritize initial focus acquisition on a potential subject at 10 feet versus a potential subject at 5 feet, if both subjects are detectable by the sensor? I may be wrong, but I don't think so.

Choosing focus points is exactly the issue at hand. I don't believe there is any distance priority for a single AF point. In any of the automatic AF point selection modes, yes – the AF system will choose the AF point(s) that achieve focus on the closest subject within a zone or the whole array. With a single point selected, if there are multiple 'subjects' at different distances the AF system will lock onto the feature with the highest contrast, regardless of distance. You can see this especially with a complex 3D subject like a tree with bare branches, in single point AF the closest branch is not consistently where the AF system locks focus. In fact, in that scenario in diffuse lighting, where contrast between branches is pretty uniform, the process appears stochastic.

Note that the above doesn't change the applicability of your suggestion to the automatic AF point selection process – a distance priority could be applied among AF points, but not for a single AF point. It's an interesting idea, but I highly doubt we'd ever see it implemented, due to the complexity.

This concept reminds me a bit of the old A-DEP setting, where the camera used the distance between the closest and furthest in-focus AF points to determine the aperture value needed to have both in the DoF. In the context of the above discussion it's worth noting that on cameras with the A-DEP setting, that mode forced the camera into automatic AF point selection among all points, it can't function with just one AF point.

Patent: Canon EF-S 9-20mm F4.5-5.6 IS

It is POSSIBLE that it could be a replacement for the long-in-the-tooth EF-S 10-22 USM... afterall, the 10-18 is quite new and quite cheap.

True, but as far as speed, nothing differentiates this patent from the current 10-22. In fact, it's slower!
I guess for UWA fun, I'll have to get a full frame with the 16-35 f4.

Is speed really a key issue for UWA's on APSC though? that nobody but Tokina have ever made a fast UWA zoom for APSC does seem to suggest its a niche market.

9mm obviously offers a notable advantage over 10mm and means Canon edge out Nikons 15mm equivalent on there 10-24mm with 1.5 crop factor with 14.5mm.

If the 80D really pushes resolution then an update to the 10-22mm does seem to be needed badly.
Your thoughts are mostly right but the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM with its aperture starting at 3.5 set the standard.
A lot of people use UWA not only for landscape, where wide aperture is less important. They use it for indors, for nights, for artsy UWA with low DOF and in addition they want the convenience of a zoom. Those want a wider aperture than 4.5.

And even if the 10-22 it has problems with a higher resolution 80D I don't believe, that those people are willing to trade of one whole number in aperture for losing 1 mm on the wide and 2 mm on the long end, too.

They (I) would say: "Canon, make the 10-22 better! give us the 9 mm in addition on the wide end, if possible. If not, leave it at 10 mm."

But we'll see what Canon thinks...

100-400mm II + extender reviewed

I agree with you, the results looks rather similar. What camera are you using your 100-400 II on?

And by the way, how do I reply on a post without getting all these previous quotes?

If you use "Quote" to reply, you have remove the quotes tediously and systematically by removing all the " /quote " (in square brackets) except the last after what you want to quote, and all the previous until the very first, in your case square bracket quote author=Peterpilot link=topic=27742.msg548064#msg548064 date=1442857589 square bracket. Alternatively, just click on "Reply" and save yourself the trouble.

I understand where the queries concerning the MTFs arise. They are similar. My reasoning for the 100-400mm being better for the APS-C 560/600mm data close to the centre was: the 300mm x2 at f/5.6 has an average MTF for sag and merid of 0.484 and f/8 0.524. There is astigmatism for both as the sag and merids do not converge. For the 100-400 II at f/8 the average is 0.507 with astigmatism but at f/11 it is 0.538 with no astigmatism.

I have the 300mm f/2.8 II and the 100-400mm II so I have no owners bias to either lens and love them both.
Alan I remember you from previous posts. I do believe that since you have tried so many combinations you are more than qualified to have an opinion which by the way I value. It was just the TDP site which seemed to contradict a little.

iPad Mini 4 Gets a Great Display with a Full Color Gamut and Record Low Reflectance

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/09/ipad-mini-4-review-a-lighter-faster-tablet-with-a-better-screen/

I think this review is a good rundown of the Mini 4.
It's an upgrade, but definitely held back from what they could have done, and should have done, with the platform.

The Mini 4 CPU is only 1.25 times better than the Mini 2/3, and while the Mini 4 GPU is almost twice as good as the Mini 2/3, the Air 2 GPU from last year is three times faster than the Mini 2/3.

As someone looking to upgrade from the Mini 2, now is definitely not the time to buy, the Mini 2 is still quite capable.
I'm betting the Air 3 next year is going to be reasonably priced and share a lot of features with the Pro.
If not I'm waiting for the Mini to get a significant GPU upgrade, which could take a while if they wait to years or more to upgrade the internals on any given model.

Sony's PXW-FS5 XDCAM Super 35 Taking on Canon's C100 Mark II

I've waited since the fs700 came out for Canon to respond with their own high-speed killer. Nothing, not even 4k in anything lamen can afford. I am really trying to free up my budget to get this pxw-fs5. Although I am just a video newbie, this has all the specs I would want to justify the cost: 4k, 960fps ability/240fps in HD, built in wi-fi, built-in ( new electronic) ND filters, e-mount that works with Canon glass. It's on like Donkey Kong. Even if I scrape the pennies together, my wife may veto it on cost alone since we have kids now. I am trying to keep my excitement down. I just found a deal on a Canon xa10 at a pawnshop, too.

Canon's Next ConnectStation to do 4K and Wireless Charging

Wireless charging would be nice in addition to replaceable batteries. The battery can charge overnight and be ready the next day. If Samsung can do wireless charging with their Galaxy phones why can't Canon. Qi wireless chargers are affordable. I also like the idea of wireless functions and transfers and hopefully it'll have GPS.

"Sony A7R II: Focus Accuracy Better than Any DSLR I’ve Ever Used" - Digglloyd

Just a quick update on the Sony with the metabones. Whilst the focus accuracy is generally very good I have had several times where the focus stops working all together and even more times where the camera decides to blackout for at least 10 seconds. There are still many issues to be worked out with these cameras.

I thought that was a metabones thing but mine does that occasionally with native glass too. Buggy firmware I hope.

The thing I notice with the adapter more frequently is the camera not knowing the max aperture. It will display -- rather than an f number, and I have to power cycle. It typically happens after the camera sleeps. Maybe it doesn't supply enough power to the adapter to hold the lens info.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. I haven't noticed any issues with max aperture yet but I have noticed that 1.8 is displayed as 1.7 on the Sony for some reason. The Sony cameras seem to be full of weird issues.

I am making the assumption it doesn't know max aperture and thus gets confused based on how you have to "teach" it 3rd (4th?) party glass like Tamron. It needs to learn max aperture before it can properly focus (which is done wide open). I assume once it loses info about an attached lens it needs to reboot. Could be a different reason entirely, but the symptom and solution is consistent: display -- for aperture -> reboot.

The display thing I think has I do with the Sony set for 1/2 stops, not 1/3.

A funny thing I noticed is that with my EF 16-35 f4L IS, my exif data reads the Sony FE 16-35 OSS. No clue whether that's the camera's doing or the adapter's.
